View Full Version : The B Movie Creature Feature Hall of Fame

I'm super~duper bored so I'm going to go ahead and open this thread. Actually it probably needs to be so that we can have a good discussion about what will be allowed to be nominated and what will not.
I'm going to be very loose with the definition of B movie. For the purpose of this HoF it just means low budget. How low? Well I need help with that. I'm not good with movie budgets. Just ask Seanc. ;)
If you want to know what a B movie really is read this http://www.bmoviecentral.com/bmc/bmc-articles/145-what-exactly-is-a-b-movie.html
As far as what constitutes a creature feature read this: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creature_Features I'm not going to hold the nominations to just those movies but we do need to have a discussion about what can and can't be nominated. Sometimes something feels like a creature feature but another movie with that same type of creature doesn't. For example Dracula works for me as a creature feature while Interview With a Vampire doesn't.
So anyway we have two weeks to get this straightened out. If you are apart of the 6th HoF use these next two weeks to get ahead there so you can also join this one. This will start March 8th.
Don't be afraid to go lowbrow here. People who love creature features love the so good it's bad ones. I plan on this one being fun!

I'm glad you opened this thread now so we can talk about what is and isn't allowed. :)
For example Dracula works for me as a creature feature while Interview With a Vampire doesn't. That's helpful and explains it well, makes sense too.
How about classic A films with creatures, like these: The Birds, Alien, The Thing (1982), Jaws?
How about cheesy B budget films, without creatures like: Reefer Madness, Glen or Glenda, Barbarella?
What about horror films from the 70s-80s, Candyman, Nightmare on Elm street, Friday the 13th?
Godoggo
02-22-15, 10:00 PM
They have to be creature features so no on the reefer madness and the other two. Some people consider Jason and the like to be "creature features" but I'm not going to allow them for two reasons. Firstly, they fit firmly in the slasher genre and those movies will be eligible for the horror HoF come Halloween.
Jaws and Alien might be creature features but they are too high budget. Possibly The Birds. I'm going to defer to HK on some of this when it comes to budget. He seems on top of that stuff. Oh, and I'm not sure The Thing seems B movie enough. I'll ask for others to chime in on that as well.
This is unusual but because this genre is so loosey goosey I'll give you one of the five movies I'm considering nominating so you get the idea. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crocodile_2:_Death_Swamp
It's so bad it's good. I love that movie so much. That one is a croc but I watch so many bad shark movies Tim calls me Chandler. ;) I've got a pile of those I'm thinking of also. Malibou Shark Attack. That's good stuff. You don't have to go that far in the gutter of awesome awfulness, but this is the one time when it's acceptable.

Crocodile 2: Death Swamp...great choice! It just screams B budget fun:)
To me B budgets look and feel cheap and fun, like your choice or like Piranha (1978) or many of those 50s drive in cheap creature movies.
The Birds and The Thing seem like top level A budget big films to me.
But Barbarella seems like a cheap fun, B movie made for a drive in.
I would love to join this, but I wish it were later in the year. Right now I want to catch up on 2014 movies and then dive into 60s films. But I'll follow along and read what people are saying, and might even watch some of the movies. I just can't commit myself to joining.

What about movies such as Rawhead Rex, Cemetary Man or Bad Taste?
I'd say maybe to Bad Taste and no to the others. I'd say that enough zombie movies exist to warrant their own special HoF at some point, so I'm putting the kibosh on any zombie movies.
I'll say yes to Bad Taste. Rawhead Rex is up for a vote which will be done this way. If I am iffy on a movie being allowed, I will put it up for a vote. To no votes and the movie is not allowed. I'm also allowed to vote and I'm giving a no to Rawhead Rex. It still needs one more person to reject it or it will be allowed. Speak now or forever hold your piece.
Also up for a vote is Barbarella. If you don't want it in so say. You must be joining this in order to vote.

Never heard of it but it looks like it's probably OK. Only thing is that it's a Clive Barker story and most of his stuff is darker than what I would consider "Creature Feature" to be. So, don't really know ...

King Kong (all 3 versions) were definitely 'A list', cutting edge, yet I can still think of them as a creature feature. I mean Kong is one big creature and he battles other creatures.

The Brood seems more science fiction but that's why I wanted to include both to begin with. I kind of wish I had done that.
The original King Kong, I'd say yes to as well as Troll Hunter. The Host is sort of too good to be B movie.
Troll Hunter is too, in a way, but it has enough cheese, I think.

Frankenstein (1931)

Equinox (1970)
The Toxic Avenger (1984)
Little Otik (2000) - this could be pushing it, but it is about a wooden creature that eats people. An Otesanek.

Could or has a B-movie ever accidentally became a blockbuster? I was under the impression that a B movie was more to do with the budget/production as Mark said, than how well it did at the Box Office. Nothing to do with this thread, i was just curious after reading your comment.

When they were made they were considered B-movies.
I don't know how you can say that about the Universal monster movies. Universal Pictures was a major studio, and these movies had major stars and competitive budgets.
Take this quote from Film Daily about Frankenstein when it opened in 1931-
"produced intelligently and lavishly and with a grade of photography that is superb"
If anything, I believe these movies were groundbreaking.

But then you have to eliminate The Thing, and then King Kong, and then something else. And then 10 years down the road when someone is looking at the Hall of Fame results, they're going to wonder where all the best movies are, which is what the Hall of Fame means. That's why I think B movie creature feature is a great idea, but when I look at this thread, I see hardly anything that fits into that category in the spirit of how I know it.

I'm cool with however this Hof is done:) There seems to be different ideas as to what is a Creature Feature?
If we take the term Creature Feature literally, then it sounds to me like any movies with creatures that eat, scare or mess with humans.
But if we take the definition of Creature Feature from the Wiki link, then it sounds to me like we're talking about the types of low B budget films that were shown on late night Creature Feature TV shows. From the wiki link.
Creature Features was a generic title for a genre of horror TV format shows broadcast on local U.S. television stations throughout the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. The movies broadcast on the various shows were generally classic and cult horror movies of the 1930s to 1950s, the horror and science-fiction films of the 1950s, British horror films of the 1960s, and the Japanese "giant monster" movies of the 1960s and 1970s.I use to watch one of the Creature Feature shows, late night they would play old B budget films (horror, horror-sci fi). I remember watching many old Vincent Price horror films; House of Wax, House of Usher, The Raven, The Haunted Palace
So if we go by the Wiki definition, those horror Vincent Price films should all count. But there's no creatures in them.
Citizen Rules
02-26-15, 09:50 PM
Yup, those old Vincent Price flicks, were fun old movies! Gosh, I use to stay up till 2 am trying to watch those as a kid on Friday night. That was a million years ago.
We've talked about what is and isn't a B movie.
IMO, a B budget film was intentionally made with low production values as it was intended for Sunday Matinee audiences usually with kids watching. Later the intended market was a double feature at a late night drive in. The films weren't made all that well because they knew the teens wouldn't be watching them too closely anyway.
So it's not so much about the cost of the film but who it was made for.
Godoggo
02-26-15, 09:57 PM
It doesn't have to be as strict as the wiki page. I said before, I'd be a little more loosey ~goosey, I just want the majority of the movies to be in the pocket of a creature feature.
I always think of a creature feature is a creature that occurs in nature but may or may not have some sort of science~fiction element to it (see Prophecy) then that creature commences to eat the hell out of people. Like Anaconda, Sharktopus, Piranna, Malibu Shark Attack, Snow Shark, Arachnid, Them! Empire of the Ants.
All those examples are what creature features are to me.

Since I couldn't be given the time to get my health back in order before someone went and started another one on top of me, this one is cancelled.
If you guys aren't going to use any kind of organization to these special ones, these HoFs are going to get ruined.

Sorry. I was really looking forward to this, but we can't have a million going at one time. I recall making a thread to get everyone organized, but what the hell. Mistique is next though after the Science Fiction one. She gets to run the musical one and everyone needs to just be polite and wait for her to run it before jumping the gun.

Godoggo, I don't think you should cancel this HoF. I think the Sci-Fi HoF should be postponed. It's unfair to you because of all the time and effort you put into making a schedule and sticking to it, and it's unfair to the people who were ready for this HoF to miss out on it just because Guap decided to jump the gun and start the Sci-Fi HoF without checking with you first.
I agree with gbg. Postpone the Sci Fi one until after this, and Mistiques Musical one.

I am?! I think we have misunderstood each other. I've never run anything like this before, not sure if I can do it on my own. Also depends on when it is going to happen, since I got 3 school projects and exams in may and june.

Still hoping this goes ahead. I've never done one of these before and it sounds great. If and when you are ready G, I'll be there. :)

I love Creature Features. I own several. I might join this, but I don't know what you are doing. Should I find the 1st Hall of Fame thread for instructions, or did I overlook them in this thread?

I know. I've only been doing short visits for the past two or so years. I saw another thread, and asked about it, as well. Thanks for the link. I'll read it now. I didn't realize that these were all in this section of the board. I watch the online activity a lot, being a mod, and I noticed at different times these members coming into "Hall of Fame" threads. I just followed them in. I didn't know where the hell I was. Now that I know, I see there are many. I sure missed a lot. Anyway, thanks again!

I agree, the planned Creature Feature should not be cancelled.
We all worked together as a group to plan out the special HoFs. We discussed them on one thread and then voted for them on another thread. It was a group effort by those who cared about the HoFs.
When Guap disregarded our efforts as a group and went ahead and made his own Sci Fi Hof, it was like cutting into the front of the line.
It's not fair to all of us who worked together as a community and it's not fair to Godoggo who has spent many, many hours of her time working on these group projects.
I think we should support her and support the wishes of those who took the time to plan the special Hofs.

Guap??? You're cancelling this because of Guap??? The guy that left the forum and came back??? The guy obsessed with anime and making top 100 lists? Guap???? Really???? GUAP?!?!?!?!?!?

Dear Miss Go Dog Go, you are going to keep this thing going, aren't you? You truly should.
I won't be able to join in, because there is way too much time spent on it, and now that I am seriously on my way to much better health, I can't spare that much time. I do want to check in on it though. I looooove creature features. I did a thread on them a long time ago . . . Let us know, woman. Are you on?

Alright this is back on. If you haven't sent me a movie yet, you need to do so in the next couple of days. Sorry about the wait but things were CraZy over here for awhile. I'm sure you all understand. :)
Just for everyone's info, musical HoF is next and then Docs after that. If you would like to run either one of those let me know, but those are the ones that have been decided on as a group, so those are running next. :king: :)

I hate to say this, but at some point we have to start one of these Hofs, times a tickin. The creature feature was her idea so that needs to be held for her return. But maybe we should be thinking about doing another Hof? It can be done quickly too. When I did the Noir Hof, most people were done watching the bulk of the films in just a month.
Has it been like a month since the proposed Sci Fi hof? Ironically if it had been started. it would be almost done by now.

As far as I know, Godoggo's last post was about two weeks ago, and she said she would be starting this HoF in a few days. I hope she's okay.

I'm worried for her. :(
We never finished the horror hof probably either, suddenly she was just gone and rushing away from the forums. Then she came back like two weeks ago, as you said, but quickly vanished again.

She said the Creature Feature was too start in a week, but that was over a month ago.
03-09-15 (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?p=1267846#post1267846) Sorry guys, but this is going to be put on hold a week or two. I can't be on much until then.
I didn't know the Horror Hof was unfinished. What date was it suppose to be finished?

Can't remember and I'm too lazy to check.
But we finished it a long time ago because everybody was done watching all the nominations, and then Godoggo just suddenly posted the winner and a list that was out of order, and said she would be back to rank them properly and cast out the points that each individual nomination received. But that never happened. :(

Indeed. That was just what I was thinking too. Though few people were willing to join in that one at the time. So if we do it with official approval more people would be willing to join.
I think we are okay to move on with some of these. Why doesn't some one pick up the torch and run with this one. Rauldc is going to do HOF7. These shouldn't die.

Sean I made a thread asking everyone what we should do next with the Special HoFs. It has a voting poll on it.
