I was almost tempted to nominate the same movie I nominated in the first one, Farewell My Concubine, but I'm going to hold off for awhile longer. I love that movie, so much. I don't know why it's not more popular around here.
I'm really torn. Part of me wants to nominate this one movie that I think is tragically under seen and that I instantly fell in love with but another part of me wants to nominate a movie that really absolutely should be in the HoF and means a lot to me but I want to wait until the right time to nominate it. Hmmm
Thanks Sean.
Not a problem. Also know that a movie is not off limits just because it has been nominated. We have had a couple returning noms that I can think of so far.
Miss Vicky
01-31-15, 09:50 PM
I'm not at all sure what to nominate. Last time I joined so that I could make people watch a certain underseen movie and went in knowing exactly what I would nominate.
This time I'm going to have to ruminate on it a bit before I decide.

Do you reveal the noms next week Sean? Is it always like that?
Yep. I'm pretty sure Jiraffe originally did it that way and I think it's a good idea to keep it like that. I feel like people might be influenced by what others are nominating even if they aren't consciously doing it. It also keeps people from jumping the gun and watching and posting about the nominations before the HoF even officially starts. That could be problematic for a couple of reasons. Plus it's like a big reveal this way. It's fun to have everyone wait then see what gets nominated all at once.

I can't decide. This is the first time I've done one of these general HoF. Does it have to be something worthy or can you choose something more lightweight that people might enjoy but not count amongst the greatest films of all time. I'm a bit put off by the fame aspect!
Go big or go home is my vote Christine.;) I don't think there is an exact answer to that, everyone plays it different. I pick a favorite that I think has a good chance of being broadly enjoyed. A lot of people go obscure though.

I've been trying to decide what movie to choose for this, and I still have no idea what to nominate. The only things I've decided is that:
1) I think it should be something that most people probably haven't seen yet, rather than something common that everyone already has an opinion about so they might not re-watch it.
And
2) I think it should be something thought-provoking so people can discuss it after watching it, rather than just giving an opinion, and quickly moving on to the next movie.

I submitted my nomination. Hopefully everyone will like it. :)
I haven't bumped this because it seems like everyone that wants to be in has seen it. You have till 6EST tomorrow to get in your nominations. I have 14 not including mine. I have already watched two, one of the benefits of being host. :D
Your nominations are up along with the dead line in the first post. We may have one more. Neiba sent a nomination but I had to ask him to send another because his nomination had just been nominated last round.
If you sent a write up, have no fear, I will put it in the first post of the individual threads I will be creating. Yoda gave us the okay for that. They will be in the ongoing tournaments section. The reason I decided to put your write ups there is because not everybody sent one, hope that is okay with everyone.
Hang tight for the threads. I have to go off line for a bit but will get them up tomorrow at the latest.

Miss Vicky
02-06-15, 10:24 PM
I've seen three of the nominated films, including my own - All Quiet On The Western Front (but I'll need to rewatch it as it's been awhile), Brokeback Mountain, and A Perfect World.

You can watch All Quiet here (http://www.tcm.com/watchtcm/movies/67079/All-Quiet-On-The-Western-Front/) up until the ninth. You'll have to do some signing up though.

All Quiet (my nomination) is the only film I have seen.
Oh god, Rushmore? I have to watch another Wes Anderson film after hating Grand Budapest Hotel? Ugh....
Maybe I'll like, maybe I'll hate it even more than GBH. (That'll be hard as I gave it 0)

A good pull this time. I've seen a good number of these, my favorites being Late Spring (obviously one of the greatest movies ever made), Ten (one of Kiarostami's greatest and most poilitical films), Sonatine (a very strange and relaxed gangster movie), and A Perfect World (one of Eastwood's best)
I won't be joining you with this whole school + living in a different country thing taking up too much of my time, but I'll be around for discussions of the films I've seen
Whoa, I thought for sure you had seen Woman in the Dunes, bluedeed.

I haven't seen many of these.
Das Boot, 3 times, last watch about 15 years ago.
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, 3 times, last watch about a year ago.
Foreign Correspondent, once almost 20 years ago.
Woman in the Dunes, once in December.
A Perfect World, once about 20 years ago.
The Sweet Hereafter, once about 10 years ago.
I've seen 9 of those and like them all - but The Sweet Hereafter, Das Boot and Woman in the Dunes (along with my own nomination) are the ones I love.
Looking forward to seeing Ten the most of the others and it is a timely nomination because it will be 10th Kiarostami film :)
Frightened Inmate No. 2
02-07-15, 12:22 AM
I've seen Foreign Correspondent, Raise the Red Lantern, and Rushmore out of these. I watched Foreign Correspondent recently and enjoyed it, and the other two were both movies I was planning on rewatching because i don't think I got as much out of them as I could have the first time around.
I'm especially excited for Ten, because the four other Kiarostami films I've seen were masterpieces. Also am looking forward to Late Spring, A Perfect World, Sonatine, and The Sweet Hereafter.
Alright I have added all the threads. Yoda was nice enough to let us do that so lets make use of them. I hope it gets people to check in and read what others are saying more frequently.
Inmate joined us and I added his nomination to the first post. If Neiba sends a nomination tomorrow I will add it and extend the due date.
I know goodies provided a you tube link for her nomination. I have also found Ten, Woman In The Dunes, and Late Spring on you tube. If you have trouble finding anything else let me know. I won't be able to find it for you, but know how to find someone who will. :D

Neiba sent his nomination. It is Fail Safe, a Lumet movie from 1964. Add it to your list. I extended the dead line. That is all, we are officially closed for business.

I just rewatched it a couple days ago. Love it but feared it wouldn't do great.
Its been a couple years so I am reluctant to comment. One of those that just left my mind. Sometimes things just don't hit you right. If I basically completely forget it, it needs a rewatch though. I don't remember lines or scenes great, I usually remember story arcs though. That film has all but left me.

I too thought about nominating Grapes of Wrath! It made a big impression on me the first time I saw it some weeks ago!
And I'm happy Fail-Safe is receiving so much love! I feel it's a bit in the shadow of Dr. Strangelove because it's from the same year and has a similar theme, that's why I chose it!
I only watched Woman in the Dunes and The Man from Earth and they will both need a rewatch, for different reasons!
Das Boot has been on my watchlist for ages so this will be a chance to finally watch it! It looks a very solid list overall! :)

I've seen six of these already, so have quite a few to watch. I'd like to rewatch the ones I have seen as well.
Brokeback Mountain, Das Boot and Sonatine are all excellent films. All Quiet on the Western Front is interesting. I wasn't keen on The Sweet Hereafter or Rushmore, but I'm going to watch them again.
I'm looking forward to the others. Some of them I've been meaning to watch for a while, while some others I've never even heard of.
I just read the first line and was pretty disappointed but the second line made it all better. :D
I'm really curious as to what people are going to have to say about The Sweet Hereafter. I think it's a phenomenal film both technically and emotionally.
Egoyan is a favourite of mine. To me he is one of the great modern storytellers, slowly building his characters and a plot by gradually bringing in more information. Unlike a director like Nolan who just has characters tell you what's going on, Egoyan lets us discover things ourselves.
I've seen five of his films and liked them all but I feel like TSH is where everything really came together for him.
Godoggo
02-09-15, 10:15 PM
Exactly, Sane! I feel so much more from a film when the director allows us to do that. I felt like The Sweet Hereafter seeped into my pores. It wasn't a movie I could shake very easily. The character kept popping into my head long after.
I have a huge problem with directors (Nolan in particular) that need to lead you by the nose and make sure you get exactly what they are putting down. It's why I find his films hard to rewatch. You've gotten every thing you need to by the first viewing.
I've seen The Sweet Hereafter several times now and I still find a new way of looking at certain characters or discover a new way of looking at grief and it's effects.

Now I have some nice live action films to watch. It's been some time since I watched a good live action film, in fact, nearly a year.
I never watched this Brokeback mountain film, though I have watched all the Japanese films nominated more than once. I also nominated a hardcore otaku animated film. I was thinking of nominating Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha the Movie 2nd A's but I decided to be a little more conservative and nominate something more interesting since that movie is not really special in any way (well, it's moe action).
Edit: I sent a rather long text detailing why I nominated it because I do not regard it as a specially "well crafted" movie.
I have seen a fair amount of the nominations and my personal favorites would be Late Spring followed closely by Pierrot le Fou :)
Interesting to see Ten by Kiarostami in there!

Seanc, I have a question to ask. I want to respond to gbgoodies in The Sweet Hereafter thread but some of it I want to address is in her spoiler tags. So this is my question, since you seperated the threads should we worry with spoiler tags or should people expect spoilers to be discussed in the threads and not go into that thread until they have seen the movie?
Just curious. This may have been addessed but I'm not paying close attention to everything since I don't have to. :p :D
Miss Vicky
02-12-15, 08:19 PM
I would hope that people reading a thread dedicated to one particular film would expect to see some spoilers and that tags shouldn't be necessary. But we'll see what sean says.
I just want to know what the heck Guap nominated so I can find it and get it over with.

As the person writing the post, I usually try to use spoiler tags whenever I realize that I'm giving away important plot points, but as a reader, I would expect to read spoilers in a thread dedicated to a specific movie.

I'm with you which is why I asked. They really interrupt my flow of thought and I find them clunky.
Seanc may want them used though, so I'll wait to see what he wants.

Some people who haven't seen the film will still read the individual Hof movie threads, I know I read them. So how about a comprise?
Ditch the spoiler tag, but if you're about to give away key elements of the movie just type Spoiler: then keep typing.
Anybody who keeps reading after seeing the word Spoiler can't complain if the plot is spoiled.
EDIT>>>>I meant compromise not comprise.

This works for me too, but I rarely get upset when I accidentally read spoilers. With my lousy memory, I usually forget them by the time I see the movie anyway.
My original intention was to make those spoiler threads so people could speak freely after watching. I didn't want to make the thread a mile long, so I ditched it in the title. The whole idea of the separate threads is for people to go there after watching so unless an overwhelming majority want them, lets ditch the tags. I don't like them either.

Awesome! That's pretty much what I figured but I wanted to make sure.
I have a different thought process anyway. I know I have said this a few times before but for me someone expressing how they feel about a movie is much more of a spoiler than knowing someone dies at the end or that X and O are really the same person.

I don't consider feelings to be spoilers because they're different for everyone. Feelings are subjective, but whether or not someone dies at the end or that X and O are really the same person are facts.

I don't consider feelings to be spoilers because they're different for everyone. Feelings are subjective, but whether or not someone dies at the end or that X and O are really the same person are facts.
But I don't really care about what happens in a story. I care about how the characters react to it and the themes the movie explores. Yeah the feelings are different for everyone, but 1. I don't like to go in with any preconceived notions & 2. It's hard for me not to constantly "look" for things that people have said about the movie (i.e someone's acting was wooden or the dialogue wasn't good) and compare them to what I think.
I find it easier to be completely immersed in a movie and forget it's a movie if I go in having no idea what to expect in terms of quality. Knowing the outline of a story doesn't bother me, just as if it were a movie based off a book and I had read the book first.
It's just the kind of viewer I am. I'm not a person that places a great deal of importance on plot.

I like to hear what people thought about the movie before I see it because it gives me an idea if the movie is worth my time or not, but I prefer not to hear the major plot points if possible.
I rarely read the book before I see a movie, so that's never an issue for me.

Question for sean:
If a participant drops out, will his or her nomination be disqualified?
I know that was the rule for the Fifth HOF, but I didn't recall reading anything about it this time around.
Yes MV, we will stick with that rule. Godoggo put it in place after having a few drop outs a couple rounds back. I think it is a good one, maybe someone will think twice before just dropping now. I think the general consensus is that we all understand life getting in the way sometimes, but lately it feels like a lot of people have got real busy, real quick.

Yeah, it's way better than trying not to read posts about the movies I haven't seen and then having to go back through the thread.
I had rejected the idea because of the amount of threads it will generate, but if that's not a problem it makes everything much better.
For some reason it's made me want to watch the movies faster as well. I want to be able to go in all the threads. :D

My ratings for the films I have already watched:
All Quiet On The Western Front - 5 +
Powerful and I love war films.
Late Spring - 5++
Perhaps the strongest of all the films nominated, IMO.
Woman In The Dunes - 4
Despite being in Tarkovsky's top 10 and in Kinema Junpo top 10 from the reader's poll, I didn't find it THAT impressive. Still very good film overall.
Pierrot le Fou - 3
It's ok. I think it tries to hard to appear like the creation of a leftwing intellectual .
Das Boot - 4_5+
Another war film, a really famous one though that I think most forum members have watched. My favorite part of the film is the one where they are inside the submarine. :D
A Perfect World - 4_5
Clint Eastwood makes powerful films and this is already one of my favorites of his. I already rate it above Flag's of our Fathers, that one about the closet gay FBI president and Letters of Iwo Jima (which I also loved).
Sonatine - 4
Favorite part of the movie is the soundtrack, by Hisaishi, same composer of Miyazaki's films soundtracks.
Rushmore - 4 +
Great comedy all around. Though the highschool kid looked older than I am.
Brokeback Mountain - 4
Gayer than gayest gay I ever meet.
The Man From Earth - 4+
Cool cerebral indie movie featuring the second movement of Beethoven's 7th Symphony in it's climax!
K-On! - 4 +
It's not the greatest movie ever, but I nominated it because I think it's an interesting film in many ways.

I just checked my local library's website and I should be able to get it from them. Not sure how soon I'll be able to get it though so I might have to wait on that one.

Once I've watched Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (probably tonight), I'll decide where to put it on the ballot, maybe make some minor tweaks and then submit my votes.

Score indeed. My library doesn't have a very good selection. Small town living. :( I should get a card in Chattanooga though. Probably would be worth the 40 minute drive every so often.

Finished it, great selection of movies overall. Two complains however:
1. Lack of science fiction films nominated.
2. Lack of animated films nominated (besides mine, this is valid for all HoF).
My favorite genre and my favorite medium are unrepresented in HoF. Same applies to comedies however, as comedies are rarely nominated for the HoF. With my preliminary ratings:
All Quiet On The Western Front 5 +
Foreign Correspondent 2
Late Spring 5 ++
Fail Safe 4_5
Woman In The Dunes 4 -
Pierrot le Fou 3 -
Das Boot 4 +
Raise The Red Lantern 3_5
This Boy's Life 4 -
A Perfect World 4 +
Sonatine 4
The Sweet Hereafter 3_5 -
Rushmore 4 +
Blue Car 2
Ten 1_5 + (some interesting elements but overall I found it unpleasant to watch)
Brokeback Mountain 4
Before The Devil Knows Your Dead [rating]4[/rating[
The Man From Earth 4_5

You do realize that there will always be a specialty HoF running now. Right now it's horror and noir. Some movies are just never going to win a standard HoF no matter what so the specIalty HoFs are there to represent those movies. I'm just hoping people keep that in mind when nominating movies.
Musicals have already proven they can't win a standard, science fiction might go over with the right crowd, but not many would be a winner, most animation isn't going to do well so these are why the specialty HoFs exist.

Just like the Oscars. :D
People complain that the Oscars are biased towards "live action drama films in contemporary or historical settings", but the HoF here has precisely the same biases. Both reflect the attitude of American society.

That's the problem with a lot of arthouse movies. It's hard to find an accurate rating because the only people rating them are the arthouse movie lovers. The mainstream people, (like me), don't watch them, (unless they're nominated in a HoF), so we don't rate them on IMDB.

I would assume that most of the people who've watched K-On! (and then rated it) are established fans of the television show, making that rating meaningless for our purposes.

Sometimes it's the inverse. Some great movies have poor ratings because they have been exposed to people who do not understand it. Some plain mediocre movies have high ratings because they adjust well with the current preferences of the masses (i.e. everything with Christopher Nolan's touch).

Here:

it is rated 8.39 and it has 44976 ratings, the IMDB has only ca. 400 ratings. Usually anime more consistent with American aesthetic preferences tends to have a relatively higher IMDB rating relative to their MAL rating.
Cowboy Bebop, for instance, the single most popular anime in the west (among adults) is rated: 8.83 on MAL, compared to 9.0 on IMDB. MAL is a closer reflection of it's quality though anime titles that are not very accessible to teenagers/young adults like that Utena movie I nominated have relatively low ratings on MAL at 7.58, still closer to the IMDB rating of 7.2.
K-On is more aligned with Japanese tastes and less "accessible" to western audiences.

It's pretty obvious. I will not nominate anything exotic on future "normal" HoF because it's already plain obvious that genre movies and animation are out :(. In fact I should have noticed that a long time ago with Nausicaa and some very, well, ignorant comments on the movie, anyway, I am a bit of a stubborn person, who refuses to face reality repeatedly.
Sorry that I haven't been around lately. School has heated up for me, but since the deadline is June 14th I still am sure that I'll get around to finishing this up. But I mean to be safe, don't worry too much about getting to my submission to those of you that haven't.
Never participated in one of these before, but just curious.
Is there some 'theme' that the movies selected have in common, or are they just completely random choices? Because I see a war film alongside an animated Japanese film, and comparing films from completely different genres ain't exactly easy

I'd say though part of a film's quality is related to it making it comprehensible to the audience.
So if a film isn't 'understandable' just because it's foreign and Westerners aren't familiar with the culture, that's a slightly different ballpark than a film being just plain confusing.

It's a general HOF. Participants each chose a film of any genre, era, or medium that they felt were worthy of being inducted.

Guap, no, I was never trying to insult you. I see you bumping old posts and quoting them, and then be offended by whatever words the post has. I think you're just overly-defending yourself. You're living in a world of your own where you believe everyone hates you for loving anime and being different from others. And the truth is, we don't. I was only joking with my post and a lot of members were probably doing the same. Sorry for my post which could surely be taken seriously now that I look at it but it would be awesome if you lightened up a bit. :yup:

Those have a more defined type of movies being watched. The next special Hof should either be the Creature Feature Hof or the Sci-Fi Hof, it's not clear yet which one will be next. I'll will be joining the Sci-Fi Hof. Do you like Sci-Fi?

When it's a mainstream movie, I tend to trust IMDb ratings... When it's not, I don't even look at it!
IMDB ratings provide generally good information about movies. For instance, among anime films the highest rated ones are indeed the best ones IMO. The highest rated American movies are indeed excellent in general as well.
But I agree that for relatively obscure movies (like the one I nominated for this HoF) the ratings don't provide good info. And that there are natural biases (mainstream Hollywood movies will have higher ratings than obscure non-English movies, which is expected because it's an english speaking site hence people there are mostly from the English speaking countries and prefer movies that reflect their own culture).
