Created by Lee Daniels, the man behind Precious, Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire, comes this hour-long prime time drama which is basically Dynasty meets Hustle and Flow meets Glee centered around a family-owned recording company about to go public. Oscar nominee Terrence Howard stars as the family patriarch, Lucious Lyon, a music mogul with health issues and a lot of secrets, who is trying to figure out which of his three sons he should groom to take over the company. The eldest son wants the job but feels his father loves his other two sons more. The middle son is an artist on the label but dad feels the fact that he's gay is going to seriously impede his career. The youngest son is also an artist on the label still trying to find his identity as a rapper and blaming his dad for all his problems. Throw into the mix Cookie Lyon (Oscar nominee Taraji P. Henson), Lucious' ex and the boys' mother who has just been released from prison after 17 years on drug-related charges and you have all the ingredients of a juicy prime time soap whose pilot had me riveted to the screen and made me very anxious to check out episode 2. Howard and Henson, whose chemistry was proven in Hustle and Flow are reason enough to check this out. I have a feeling this show is going to become a guilty pleasure of mine.
