It's about beauty of course but not only.
Every Bond girl is beautiful.
But some of them are something more than arm candy.
To me best bond girl ever was Eva Green in Casino Royale.
Do you have your type...?

I'm not really a fan of the older Bond films but I gotta say, from what Ive seen, it has to be Claudine Auger from Thunderball (?)

Anja try watching the very first Bond films and see how they change and progress. Bond films reflect the cinema styles of the time and the values of the decades they were made in. Sort of like a time machine going back to the early hip 1960s, when thoughts of enemy spies were real in the minds of Brits and Yanks.

Role-wise, the girl from the Spy Who Loved Me was the best - she was the most-well rounded character and contributed the most to the plot.

Personality wise she's not my favorite - a little too masculine - I'd have to think about who my favorite is.

I like the Melina Havelock character, and how she is more relevant to the plot than usual, and want to like her, but Carole Bouquet did bad job acting wise, and seemed burned out, like she didn't really want to on the set, in her performance, unless I'm wrong?

But in the case of going for pure sexiness as the top reason to pick, I find Monica Belucci to be the sexiest, but she is only on screen for about 10 minutes so is it fair to rate her as the best Bond girl,if she only gets 10 minutes of screen time?

Yeah that's too bad she was turned down. When picking a Bond girl, should the best Bond girl be the main one in the plot that drives the plot the most, or would Xenia and Anya Sciarra be eligible, even though they don't take up as much plot time compared to the main ones?

I think when the term Bond girl comes up it's usual to think of the female lead who tends to be the main love interest. Elektra King was unusual because she ended up being the villain as well, which was quite clever.

ironpony
03-23-19, 03:01 PM

As I say they did something quite clever by starting out one way and then having the surprise of Elektra being behind everything. That dooms her relationship with Bond but it's no less valid.

Well I guess if we are not picking the villain ones then, aside from Elektra, and if they have to be the main girl in the plot, I think I would have to go with either Vesper Lynd, Tracy Bond, or Pussy Galore but they seem like cliched choices, since so many fans pick them. But I guess there is a reason why they are often picked.

Although not technically a "Bond girl", we would be remiss in not mentioning the incomparable Lois Maxwell, who played Moneypenny in the first 14 Bond films.

She was sexy, alluring, clever, and had wonderful chemistry with Bond, especially the Sean Connery films.

Disclaimer: I have only seen a few of the "older" Bond flicks, mostly only the "newer" ones.

Trying to recall the ones I liked most. Here's what I got so far.

Favorite: Vesper Lynd (Eva Green) in Casino Royale. Felt like an actual character. Mind you, this was after seeing the likes of Halle Berry, Denise Richards, etc. Really like Casino Royale and the way they set up the relationship for the rest of Bond's character arc.

Honorable Mention:
Elektra King (Sophie Marceau) has always stuck with me, from The World Is Not Enough. The reveal was surprising to me at the time of her being a baddie. Generally found her attractive and her character decently fleshed-out.

https://thumbs.gfycat.com/EmotionalHappygoluckyBabirusa-size_restricted.gif
Not to say that Halle Berry didn't look good in Die Another Day. Never saw all of Tomorrow Never Dies, and can barely remember the bond girls from Quantum of Solace, Skyfall or Spectre. That's not a good thing. I remember the crazy chick, Xenia Sergeyevna Onatopp (Famke Jannsen), from Goldeneye more than them.

I can see that.

I read that Sharon Stone was the original choice for Electra King, but she doesn't have that vulnerability quality that Marceau does, it seems. Sharon Stone would have been really good for Christmas Jones though I think.

Actually when it comes to picking the best Bond girl, would it be unfair to pick one who was good, but just so happened to be in a sub-part entry? I never liked Thunderball as much and found it to be flat, but I did like Domino Derval, but since she is in a bad entry which under-utilizes her, and makes it worse by giving her bad dubbing of someone else over top, would it be fair to pick her, or is her being stuck in a bad movie with bad dubbing, make her a lesser Bond girl because of that?

I actually thought that Carole Bouquet may be one of the worst Bond girls cause her acting is very wooden I felt, and she acted like she just didn't want to be in the movie and seemed wooden and burned out.

Akiko Wakabayashi's character just seemed flat, and she didn't really have much to go on for a character, I thought. But are you going by the novels when you say compared to on screen?

Oh well, I was picturing her Total Recall appearance more so for Christmas Jones :)

Yeah but Shazza played nice, harmless people once :D.

I actually thought that Carole Bouquet may be one of the worst Bond girls cause her acting is very wooden I felt, and she acted like she just didn't want to be in the movie and seemed wooden and burned out. That’s because of the horrible dubbing the director insisted on. There’s quite a disconnect between her spoken lines and onscreen movement. But that aside her character was a major badass and boy is she a looker.

Akiko Wakabayashi's character just seemed flat, and she didn't really have much to go on for a character, I thought. But are you going by the novels when you say compared to on screen? She was pretty to look at and broke the mold of stereotypical white girl as Bond’s romance, so she gets points for that.

Yeah she's Asian but I guess that didn't do much for me :).

It is true that Melina Havelock is a bad ass and I have to give her points for that. Since I felt that it was a bad performance, and cause of the dubbing as you pointed out, I couldn't help but compare her performance to Tanya Roberts. Tanya Roberts is not a bad ass but a damsel in distress type more so, but however, she gave a better performance as a damsel in distress, compared to Bouquet as a bad ass I thought.

So what is more important in a Bond girl? Character personality, or performance?

I’d say that character personality and performance are synonymous.

But Havelock? Think about it: she has a crossbow and it’s locked. Yessum, Havelock is the Bond girl I want in my corner.

And Akiko had that sweet ride right when Bond needed an out. I say that’s deserving of recognition. :D

Oh okay :). Well I guess when it comes to bad ass Bond girls who aren't villains, I would say the best ones for me are Pam Bouvier, Wei Lin, Jinx, Holly Goodhead, Pussy Galore, and Octopussy.

Does Tracy count as bad ass?

I think of License To Kill as the first modern Bond film. It didn't fit in with the time it was made, but it feels much more like a new Bond film to me. Minus everything which dates most 80's films, of course.

I've already posted my fav Bond girl in this thread, but just in keeping with the thread, I'll post my first and second fav. From the same film.

Caroline Munro and Barbara Bach

A lot of fans have said that Barbara Bach's acting was wooden and I can kind of see what they were talking about but I still find her charming. What if Carolyn Munroe and Bach, switched roles? Would Munroe have made a better XXX?

Well, I don't think any Bond girl is chosen for her acting. It might be more of thought now (still not the prime reason though) but back then? You rarely hear of a Bond girl again as anything other than 'former Bond girl....'?

Would she have made a better Triple X? I don't know. Possibly, but it would've been a lot more work for the dubbing department. Or, maybe they wouldn't have bothered? I don't know the reason for the dubbing anyway.

That's an interesting thought. Diana Rigg's probably the one early example of a rated actor being chosen, which I believe was also to bolster George Lazenby's inexperience. The fact that she was gorgeous helped :).

After doing a Bond marathon with my friend I guess I would have to rank the top 3 Bond girls as being Tracy, Vesper Lynd, and Xenia Onatopp? But should a Bond girl be picked for her character arc like Tracy or Vesper, or should be she picked based on pure wicked sexiness alone like Xenia, and forget about a character arc?

I d have to go with elektra king, because of the complexity of the character and what she brings to the bond formula she s a femme fatale at its best, smart and beautiful, she has everything

Well after watching the series again, I feel like Xenia Onatopp may be be the best Bond girl, but is that a cheat to pick her, since she is technically a henchperson and not a main love interest?

To me it's always going to be "Pussy Galore", for name alone.

....and it lead to one great great great line from Bond. (LOL!)

Pussy Galore seconded, but Vesper Lynd is a pretty good number two.

Yeah there are different Bond girls to choose for different reasons but I have a de facto top 4:

Xenia Onatopp
Tracy Bond
Vesper Lynd
Pussy Galore

Would this be a good top 4? But how do you choose which one is the best of these 4?
