View Full Version : Rhys' Fabulous Viewing Diary of Fabulousness
I will use this thread to document and archive my movie viewing from the 1st January 2015 onwards.
2021 EDIT: Please bear in mind that I now only offer full-star ratings. I find that offering half-star ratings can become somewhat arbitrary at times and is difficult to keep consistent and fair.
I am currently watching American Beauty as part of one of my assignments for university. I have 5 days from now to complete my first of two essays. The second being a lot harder with a deadline for the 14th!!
1st January 2015
American Beauty (1999, Sam Mendes) - RW - 8/10
American Beauty is a great little film with an interesting storyline and fantastic cinematography and iconography. This is a film I have been tasked with to analyse for a university assignment and it has been a lot of fun doing so far.
& 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968, Stanley Kubrick) - RW - 10/10
Probably the greatest sci-fi I have ever watched and amongst my favourite films of all time. 2001: A Space Odyssey is a richly layered masterpiece that can be watched over and over again and you would still find something new.

I think I'm going to give 2001 one more shot this year.
On the other hand, American Beauty became a favorite the first time I saw it.
You should take a day off, Rhys, and ease the pressure. You deserve it.
I've taken 2 days off! :D
(Probably good considering I have assignments to finish)
5th January 2015
Paths of Glory (1957, Stanley Kubrick (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000040/?ref_=tt_ov_dr)) - RW - 10/10
Paths of Glory is in my opinion amongst the greatest of Stanley Kubrick's work. It is a very powerful anti-war film and is remains amongst the most outstanding films from its genre to date.

Paths Of Glory is easily my favourite Kubrick. I know I say it every time it's brought up, but it gives you an idea of just how much more I like it than the other films of his I've seen. Get it seen, cricket, I think you'll really like it.
You both need to watch it! It's short so that gives you even more reason to just get it watched. My second favourite Kubrick!
6th January 2015
The Shining (1980, Stanley Kubrick (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000040/?ref_=tt_ov_dr)) - RW - 9/10
The Shining is another one of Kubrick's greatest works. It is a fantastically made and genuinely iconic horror film and is one of his most controversial pieces.
http://cdn2.thegloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/the-shining-gif.gif
Paths of Glory will probably be the next Kubrick movie I'll rewatch! I did not think it was asgood as some of my Kubrick's favourites but it deserves another chance!
It's my second favourite after ACO. I think it is pretty underappreciated to be honest.
I need to give Paths of Glory another watch. I have a hard time with most war films, I don't know why, so when I watched it I had a hard time getting into it.

Yeah, I get that. Just try not think of it as a typical war film. ;)

Rhys looking at your lists I noticed you haven't seen Vertigo or Raging Bull. I hope that is because you haven't updated it, otherwise, dude what are you doing? Like with your LIFE!
I'm just kidding ;)
But you should watch those two films.

Yeah mate come on, definitely watch Vertigo. I watched that film for the first time like a year ago, I still have dreams of it. Just watch it without reading too much about it, do that and come back and talk about the film.

A Letterboxd diary is a much easier way of logging your viewing, but I suppose I will have to +rep your entries in this thread anyway...
I don't know. I quite like using this because I can log when I watched the film and how many times I watched it. I will also use this for TV shows, short films and documentaries.
Letterboxd is for the birds. And since I'm a bird, I use it. :D

Rewind This! (2013, Josh Johnson (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm5275138/?ref_=tt_ov_dr)) - 7/10
This is an interesting and informative documentary that taught me a lot about the video era. I was born in 95' and only have a somewhat short recollection of VHS's from when I was younger.
& Good Morning, Vietnam (1987, Barry Levinson (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001469/?ref_=tt_ov_dr)) - RW - 8/10
Probably my favourite film staring Robin Williams, he displays fantastic acting throughout this fine story. The "It's a wonderful world" scene is pretty fantastic actually.

The Seventh Seal (1957, Ingmar Bergman (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000005/?ref_=tt_ov_dr)) - 9/10 - 2nd Watch
This is a fantastic film by one of the greatest foreign directors of all time. Ingmar Bergman's Seventh Seal is a beautiful and powerful art-house film that was just as great on the second watch. I would still like to watch this one again because I feel I still haven't gotten the most from it, mainly because I honestly find it hard to understand it at times. To top it off though the film as well as being wonderfully deep, it has some great comedic moments that fit perfectly with the overall feel.

When you're watching a Bergman film, and you start to think that you don't understand it, just think about this quoute:
"I don't understand my own films" - Bergman. He said that in an interview back in 1970 or so. I think he's brilliant, I've only seen four of his films though.
I haven't watched a film in a fair few days, been with my girlfriend. So, any suggestions for a film I could watch today or in the near future?

The Impossible(2012, J.A. Bayona (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1291105/?ref_=tt_ov_dr)) - 6/10 - 1st Watch
The Impossible is a good film with some great visuals and fairly believable acting but the story itself seems a little bit Hollywood-ified to me. A lot more could have been done to make this more powerful. It's a sad film and some of the scenes are very shocking but it could have been a lot better. Still, definitely worth the watch.

Foxcatcher (2012, J.A. Bayona (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1291105/?ref_=tt_ov_dr)) - Cinema - 7.5/10 - 1st Watch
Foxcatcher is a fantastically acted film with a powerful (and true) storyline. Steve Carell's performance is incredible in this. It's January and already 2015 has had a very bright start. If you don't know the storyline for this already, like I didn't, then do not find it out before watching. Go in with the smallest amount of knowledge of the film possible. I think you will enjoy it more.

Ballast (2008, Lance Hammer (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0358475/?ref_=tt_ov_dr)) - 7/10 - 1st Watch
Ballast is a great little independent film with a intimate story surrounding a small amount of cast-members in an open landscape. It follows the lives of a family who have been affected by a recent suicide and the changes it evokes upon each of the characters. It is fairly slow moving, but is actually quite an emotive piece.

Antichrist (2009, Lars von Trier (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001885/?ref_=tt_ov_dr)) - 7/10 - 1st Watch
Antichrist is a disturbing film, with some fairly disgusting scenes and some great acting from the two main cast members. Lars von Trier shows his controversial qualities here with the film receiving a lot of hate, but I thought it was actually quite good, although not nearly as shocking as I was expecting.

Didn't like Good Morning Vietnam as much as you did...Williams is brilliant when the character is behind the microphone, but the rest of the film is a crashing bore...the film's appeal was also lessened for me when I read somewhere later that the real Adrian wasn't anywhere near as outrageous was as Williams was in this film, but I've known for years that facts are often glossed over or exaggerated for the sake of entertainment. I do know that without Williams in the lead role, the film would have been unwatchable.

The Train (1964, John Frankenheimer (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001239/?ref_=tt_ov_dr)) - Cinema - 7/10 - 1st Watch
This is a decent and enjoyable film with good acting and interesting visuals, it was worth the watch but if I was to watch it again, I'd try get more sleep the previous night! :)
Birdman (2014, Alejandro González Iñárritu (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0327944/?ref_=tt_ov_dr)) - Cinema - 7/10 - 1st Watch
Good, but a bit of a disappointment. The story didn't really do much for me, not did the humour to be honest. The acting was excellent, specially from Keaton but besides that and the cinematography I wasn't too impressed and it, for me should have ended 5 or so minutes sooner. It feels as if it wanted to end and didn't on more than one occasion.

A good Disney film. It is very well animated but I feel some of the voices for the older characters (when they age) are a little off. The narrative also skips through a fair amount.

Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999, Jim Jarmusch (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000464/?ref_=tt_ov_dr)) - Cinema - 6/10 - 1st Watch
This film took a while for me to get into but when I did I realised that this film is actually fairly clever. This doesn't stop the fact that the premise is still pretty ridiculous. It's worth a watch though, it was entertaining.
& Grand Piano (2013, Eugenio Mira (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1079001/?ref_=tt_ov_dr)) - Cinema - 6.5/10 - 1st Watch
A very interesting but simple film (which unfortunately has a fairly weak plot) that strives due to it's fantastic style, cinematography and editing. Seriously give this one a watch. I haven't seen a lot of Hitchcock yet but this one seems to have a style in parts that could be compared to his.

Bad Taste (1987, Peter Jackson (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001392/?ref_=tt_ov_dr)) - 6/10 - 2nd Watch
Bad Taste is a very fun film. It is well shot in parts, and is even quite interesting technically but apart from the one-liners and over the top gore, I don't think that the film is all that fantastic to be honest.

I give Vertigo a 4 Rhys, it is my sixth favorite Hitchcock. I love that ending though, one of my favorites.
I love Vertigo, one of my favorite Hitchcock's personally. I think Psycho is my favorite Hitchcock, though. Vertigo might be second.
I am strange I know. I rank The Birds, Shadow Of A Doubt, Rear Window, Dial M For Murder, and Rope all in front of Vertigo and Psycho. I love all seven of these though. Hitchcock is the mack daddy.
I LOVED Dial M for Murder when I saw it, and on rewatch might be my #2 Hitchcock. But I only saw it once.

I can not remember if I have seen this one or not when I was younger, I don't think I have to be honest. Anyway, I really enjoyed it but I thought that a lot of the on-screen time was very unnecessary towards the narrative but despite this it is a well made film and is great for both young and old audience.

We had to watch about 41 short films (most under 2 minutes yeserday) from the late 1980s and early 1900s. I am not going to list them all. I don't know all the names. Plus, I left for the toilet so I would have missed a few (I was quick though!). But yeah, as much as I love film, watching short after short for just over an hour is tiring.
I also watched Ferris Buellers Day Off last night/early morning. I'll put that review up later. It was my second watch.

I watched these both with my girlfriend (she is wanting to watch a lot more Disney and I do too to be honest because I haven't seen all that much just yet). We also watched Tangled (it was her choice and I actually want to watch it again in the near future).

A Trip to the Moon (1902, Georges Méliès (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0617588/?ref_=tt_ov_dr)) - 10/10- 1st Complete Watch
An incredible piece of early film making. Originally titled "Le voyage dans la lune" this short film uses fantastic early special effects, brilliant edding and cinematography. A true masterpeice.
The Great Train Robbery (1903, Edwin S. Porter (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0692105/?ref_=tt_ov_dr)) - 9/10- 2nd Watch
With some great camerawork and interesting uses of early techniques "The Great Train Robbery" is another brilliant early work.
Dream of a Rarebit Fiend (1906, Wallace McCutcheon (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0567363/?ref_=tt_ov_dr), Edwin S. Porter (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0692105/?ref_=tt_ov_dr)) - 9/10- 1st Watch
Wow, this one uses some REALLY interesting effects and is actually quite funny! Really enjoyed this one!
Rescued by Rover (1905,Lewin Fitzhamon (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0280432/?ref_=tt_ov_dr), Cecil M. Hepworth (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0378408/?ref_=tt_ov_dr)) - 9/10- 1st Watch
This was a very nice short film and was actually quite impressive how they used the dog in my opinion. It has quite a dark premise and uses some very sterotypical values but I enjoyed it!
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1910,Otis Turner (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0877783/?ref_=tt_ov_dr)) - 6.5/10 - 1st Watch
I liked it but some of the costumes were pretty bad and the cheoreogrpahy wasn't always on par. I'm probably overrating it to be honest but I think I need more knowledge on older films to give an educated opinion.
I watched all these in my lecture screenings for my "History of Cinema" module which focuses on classic cinema.

Ah, that last post brought back memories of A-Level Film Studies. :) Did you see Sick Kitten? For some reason that's the one reeler which has always stuck in my mind.
Nope, never actually. I haven't even heard of it. I'll take a look in the near future! :)

Bump
Thanks for the bump. I will update this thread soon. My laptop broke on Valentine's so I haven't been able to post properly. It will take too long to format it all on my phone. Ordering new laptop tomorrow and will hopefully get on Thursday. If not it will be Friday I should think. :)
I have my new laptop now guys so I will try get this sorted as soon as I can. :)

Torn Curtain (1966, Alfred Hitchcock (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000033/?ref_=tt_ov_dr)) - 7.5/10 - 1st Watch
This is an interesting Hitchcock film altough certainly not his best. I enjoyed it after grasping parts of the narrative context I do not know much about. (The Cold War)

Black Cat, White Cat (1998, Emir Kusturica (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001437/?ref_=tt_ov_dr)) - CINEMA - 7/10 - 1st Watch
I may enjoy this one more on a second watch but it is a film that I would peobably have to be in the mood for to do so. It is a very crazy film, which is usally a good thing for me but the music almost gave me a headache.
&
Carrie (1976, Brian De Palma (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000361/?ref_=tt_ov_dr)) - CINEMA - 8/10 - 2nd Watch
A very good horror film that from a second watch got better. There seems to be a ot to analyse here. It is a very clever film.

&
Stand by Me (1986, Rob Reiner (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001661/?ref_=tt_ov_dr)) - 10/10 - 6th Watch?
One of my favorite films of all time. Great music, great acting and casting, It also has a fantastic (no matter now simple) story. A Timeless classic.

Rashomon (1950, Akira Kurosawa (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000041/?ref_=tt_ov_dr)) - CINEMA - 8/10 - 2nd Watch
An interesting (and fairly clever) film. It has quite a complex narrative structure and is one that can be the subject of very deep narrative analysis. It is one of the film shown as part of my "Film Narrative" module.
&
Carrie (2013, Kimberly Peirce (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005303/?ref_=tt_ov_dr)) - 4/10 - 1st Watch
There is a fair bit wrong with this remake and although the acting from the lead actress Chloë Grace Moretz (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1631269/?ref_=tt_ov_st), is actually fairly decent she definitely does not LOOK like a Carrie. Julianne Moore (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000194/?ref_=tt_cl_t1) plays her role well too but other than this and the "more realistic" gore this is pretty awful really. It spoon feeds it's audience wiith obvious information and just isn't very good.

I'm behind on updates again guys. Sorry. I will try get this done as soon as I can. I have been really busy.

Collateral (2004, Michael Mann (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000520/?ref_=tt_ov_dr)) - CINEMA - 6.5/10 - 1st Watch
This is an enjoyable (but not quite brilliant) action film with a really silly, fairly pretentious ending.

Evil Dead (2013, Fede Alvarez (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1793079/?ref_=tt_ov_dr)) - 3.5/10 - 1st Watch

&
The Evil Dead (1981, Sam Raimi (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000600/?ref_=tt_ov_dr)) - 8/10 - 2nd Watch

And it's March :)
But I am sure there is something there. ;)
And once again I am behind on updates. Ooops!
Ok, from now on (to make things a little bit easier for myself and to make for better "fuller" reviews in the near future) I will just list films I have seen on here (I may make a little comment) but review a selection of the films I see on my reviews thread. You guys will hopefully also be seeing more of me. :)
5th March - Demolition Man [1] (Marco Brambilla (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0104193/?ref_=tt_ov_dr), 1993) - 6/10
7th March - Big Hero 6 [1] (Don Hall (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2320658/?ref_=tt_ov_dr) & Chris Williams (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0930261/?ref_=tt_ov_dr), 2014) - 7.5/10
10th March - Grease [1] (Randal Kleiser (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0459170/?ref_=tt_ov_dr), 1978) - 7/10
Note: the number in bold indicates the number of times I have watched the film.
11th March - The Red and the White (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061537/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1) [1] (Miklós Jancsó (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0417352/?ref_=tt_ov_dr), 1967) - ?/10
I will need to give this one a re-watch before I rate it. We watched this for university but I didn't really understand the context at all until I attended the seminar that followed. I liked the film and can now appreciate it a lot because I understand the two sides a little more.
12th March - Only Lovers Left Alive (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1714915/?ref_=nv_sr_1) [1] (Jim Jarmusch (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000464/?ref_=tt_ov_dr), 2013) - 8/10

No love for The Babadook? :(
I liked it, but no I didn't love it. In fact I even laughed at some of it (when I am pretty sure I wasn't supposed to). I thought it was decent though.
Sorry Swan! Although this one line that was supposed to be funny was hilarious!
"My cousin's not coming because I broke her nose in two places."
There were a lot of laughs in the cinema. (This is the university cinema)

A very interesting character study.
"This is my right; it is the right of every human being. I choose not the suffocating anesthetic of the suburbs, but the violent jolt of the Capital, that is my choice. The meanest patient, yes, even the very lowest is allowed some say in the matter of her own prescription. Thereby she defines her humanity. I wish, for your sake, Leonard, I could be happy in this quietness."
23rd March - Sherlock Jr. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0015324/?ref_=nv_sr_1) [1] (Buster Keaton (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000036/?ref_=tt_ov_dr), 1924) - 8/10

Nice to see you back, Rhys. :)
Thank you! I have just been on a trip with my girlfriend so I haven't been able to watch films. However we did manage to catch Big on TV. We had a DVD player and small TV at the accommodation we stayed in but she wanted to watch Sherlock for the majority of the time (she'd been asking a while) so I agreed to watch that. I really liked it though. I'd seen the first season with her and wasn't sure about it but I really the second and third additions. :D

You can have rep for sitting through Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 :p I remember seeing a trailer for What We Do in the Shadows and thought it looked like it could be an inventive and funny little film, I'll have to get round to it eventually.
Thanks! I even had to review it after for my university magazine! Gah.
What We Do in the Shadows is very funny. :)

Didn't you think What We Do In The Shadows ran out of steam long before it finished? I've not seen it, but that's a common complaint from the few people I know who have.

Not at all. I actually liked it from start to the finish. I feel that most people at the screening felt the same. :)
How was Mall Cop 2?
Pretty awful. I will post my review here when it is completely ready. It is getting posted on a university website for a magazine. It won't go into print but my Blackfish review will. I will post that too.

I would rate/rank those three films pretty much the same that you have there. Iron Man, then Captain America, and then Thor.
27th April 2015 - Iron Man 2 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1228705/?ref_=nv_sr_2) [1] (Jon Favreau (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0269463/?ref_=tt_ov_dr), 2010) - 6/10
http://cdn.filmschoolrejects.com/images/ironman2-armor-header.jpg
- I also changed the rating for Iron Man (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0371746/?ref_=nv_sr_3) (Jon Favreau (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0269463/?ref_=tt_ov_dr), 2008) to a 7/10 rather than a 6.5/10 as I feel I was being a little harsh. -
I am now going to watch The Avengers for the second time. I disliked the film the first time I watched it but I feel that I should have watched these other films first before approaching it. I had no real idea who the characters were and I lost interest quickly resulting in a bad experience and me not really following the film. Hopefully I can give this film a better review this time.
I didn't manage to finish the film. I got 40 minutes into it but had to go and work (as I didn't realise how much I actually had to do in relation to the date oops). I've caught up now but will watch it in the next few days instead as I am not in the mood for it at the moment.
28th April 2015 - The Avengers (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0848228/?ref_=nv_sr_1) [2] (Joss Whedon (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0923736/?ref_=tt_ov_dr), 2012) - 6.5/10
Yeah, it was a lot better the second time. I still thought it was a bit messy but it was quite fun. Torn between a 6.5 and a 7.

You're not becoming one of those people who refused to rate a movie 10/10 because "no movie is perfect," are you? :p
Haha, I don't know. My thought process has changed a little. I think in percentages almost, like how university essays are marked. Anything about 70% being very good and 80% being exceptional. So a film like Clockwork which I would still give over a 9 (probably a 9.5 but I want to re-watch it) is extremely highly rated.
So to answer your question. I probably am but I have reasoning for it.
However, upon rewatching ACO I may still be inclined to give it a 10 if I feel it is better than a 9.5 (or 95%) as I only work in .5's not .1's. If you get me?
No worries bro. Do what you're gonna do. :)
I just don't want to become biased against things I have said I have loved in the past by instantly giving the film a 10 without much more thought. I adore ACO and it is still my favorite film from my favorite director. I feel that it does indeed deserve a top tier rating but films such as Stand By Me (which I have now dropped in ranks) may not quite deserve the full 10. I'm just becoming a little more critical I guess, but not too critical.
I am also in the process of making a top 100 and really want that to be thought out fully before posting it. By being a little more critical helps me in the long run to determine tight spots.

8.5/10 for your fifth favorite movie? Ouch
I still have many films to watch and all but one of the films on my top 10 are within 15 months of their first watch. Pulp Fiction being the exception. I feel that I was too generous to some ranks before and wish to change that. Although I may have been harsh to The 400 Blows. It may actually deserve a 9.
I definitely am being harsh actually, I feel stupid for changing the rating but I will. I'm just trying to be a little more critical and not give everything such a high rating like I have been doing in the past.
Just to let you guys know. I am also watching the other 4 films from the franchise today. I have seen the second film before and part of the third. It should be interesting to see how he as a character develops. I may even give me a more powerful outlook on The 400 Blows.
Oh dude, you don't have to listen to us. I was just giving you sh*t. Do whatever feels right. :)

Haha, no I know that. I definitely was a little harsh now that I think about it and that is why I squeezed the 9. I was already unsure when I was posting it to be honest.
Although yes, you will still see a lot less 10's from me. But when you do see a 10 you'll know that I REALLY love it.

I still enjoyed this but I thought it lacked a lot of the style from the previous films. I also thought that the flashbacks occurred a little too often and were sometimes too lengthy.
It ended wonderfully though and was still really quite beautiful, wrapping up the story very well.
This is definitely one of the best franchises I have ever seen.
