I've heard quite a few good things about Top Five. It's been getting good reviews, and has a 90 percent on Rotten Tomatoes from critics. So I went and saw it today. With my Mom. And her friend. Let's just say that it wasn't the most comfortable movie experience I've had. Top Five has at least two graphic sex sequences in it, and although they were supposed to be funny, I thought that they were just gross. I didn't laugh a lot during Top Five, but I had a few chuckles here and there. But the people around me were laughing A LOT. Maybe it just isn't my sense of humor or something, but the people around me seemed to be laughing hysterically. Don't get me wrong, there were some good laughs in the movie, but I don't really think it was necessarily my type of humor. Some of the jokes fell flat, I thought. As I mentioned before, the sex scenes just came out as gross and unfunny, and there's some other things I didn't quite get. Top Five was funny, but I wouldn't call it hilarious. But you might, I really don't know, you'll have to see it yourself.
Top Five is about a stand up comedian/actor named Andre Allen (Chris Rock) and how he's trying to transition from being "the funny guy" to doing more serious things. The movie takes place in one day, with stories and flashbacks from other times too. For pretty much the whole movie we follow Chris Rock and Rosario Dawson, who plays Chelsea Brown, a reporter for some magazine. Anyway, Chelsea is getting an interview from Andre for a story for basically the whole movie, and we follow the two around the city while Andre promotes a new movie. The two encounter a plethora of interesting characters and situations. The movie is almost completely conversation based, and that's where a lot of the humor comes from, which is pretty ambitious. The conversations are entertaining and Chris Rock and Rosario Dawson have really good chemistry together.
That's one of the things I liked about Top Five, is that the whole movie takes place in one day and basically revolves around the conversations between characters. This is where we can see that they had a lot of fun making the movie, and spent a lot of time improvising and just having fun while filming. The actors all seem glad to be there and all have good chemistry together. This is actually one of the few comedies that I've seen recently that has good characters, especially Chris Rock and Rosario Dawson. They both play recovering alcoholics who have been sober for four years, and we see the struggles they face to resist their urges for alcohol. Rock's character is especially complex and it's really cool to see such a complex character in a comedy. I think Rock had a really good concept with this movie, but maybe it was a bit rushed. They probably could've taken more time to vary the jokes and make a broader sense of humor, but I think Chris Rock did a good job with writing and directing for the most part. There are also a lot of unexpected cameos from big stars which are always fun, and really help give Top Five a leading edge.
This movie really does have a great cast, and a lot of fun surprises in store. Yes, some of the jokes fall flat, and yes some things don't quite work, but overall I'm glad I saw this movie. It has a great drama in the center of all the comedy, and is almost a look at Chris Rock's real life. If you're a fan of Chris Rock, and like this kind of humor, I think you'll probably like Top Five. It's not all great, but it's not all that bad either.
