View Full Version : Implementation of 'View Count' on the main forum page

It would be a great feature to be able to see the attention a thread is drawing.
Couldn't be that hard to code right?
Based on number of posts per thread? Because some are kinda old = most posts
This would be a way more useful feature if the community was larger. Having only a handful of active members and guests and even fewer people viewing a single thread it's not that useful as of a feature.
But yeah don't see the harm in the idea and implementing it would be okay I guess.

There used to be one on the old layout.
You'd wave over the numbers to the right side of the thread name and it would show how many views the thread has had.
Not sure if it was ever really used though.
You guys weren't around just over a year ago when the forum changed. It used to be a lot different and had a lot of lag and downtime.
Yoda bought a purpose server for MoFo and had the layout and look of the forum simplified and made more user friendly.
Also made it better/easier to add more functions like the reviews section at the top as well. That reviews section is only a few months old.
More stuff is in the works though, a new quiz page is coming soon too, and I'm positive Yods is listening to all the suggestions and ideas

I find view counts to be pretty useless and just add clutter.
I think number of replies and number of +rep are a better gauge of attention anyway.
Not hard at all to implement, but yeah, it's a question of room/clutter. It's of pretty marginal use and our guiding principle during the site's redesign was to remove anything superfluous.

Hooray for that! I disdain web sites with TONS of clutter and those with so many active scripts that the page hangs. I can't even go to IMDB without the page hanging these days. MoFo is the cleanest, stylistic and functionally site on the web!

What's the real benefit of that, except for certain people who like to create attention seeking threads purely for the attention?

Yeah, I didn't even know we once had it before and it's something I could care less about having now. I just go to new posts every time I log in and read what I'm interested in reading.
I'm all for simplicity and not having what's not needed.

That's a legit point

That's exactly what I do. If anything I wish the New Posts would contain more of the last post. The cut off point is what? 5 hours for a post to be considered new? I could see that going to 12 hours or so. But it's not a necessity.
It should be since your last visit. But to avoid being too resource intensive it does cut some corners. For example, if you visit and then leave for at least 15 minutes, it marks everything as read.

One thing I sometimes do if I've been on, then left, then come back and click new posts and it shows only 3 or 4...
I click Mark All Forums Read... then hit New Posts... and it gives an option to see all posts from the last 24 hours.
Sorted.

Yoda, that makes sense. Sometimes it seems to be a short list, like no one has posted...and other times when I look, it was real long...as I hadn't logged on for awhile. It's a great feature, I like it, that's how I find threads to post to.

I did not know that, but I'll try it, thanks Rodent for posting that.
