Cidade de Deus
a.k.a. City of God
(2002)
http://www.spc-intheworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/MM-Cidade.jpg
Quote: "A kid? I smoke, I snort. I've killed and robbed. I'm a man."
It tells the story of two boys growing up in a brazilian slum, the different choices they make and how hard it is to leave a world of violence if you are born in it!
It's probably the best portrait of the reality of a slum ever put into film. The cinematography and directing is masterpiece-material making every scene seem frighteningly real!

Very good film. I recommended Bus 174 to someone else who liked City of God. It's a documentary about a guy who takes a whole bus load of people hostage in Rio, as well as footage it looks into his background as a street child. You can watch the whole documentary on youtube .

Die Welle
(a.k.a. The Wave)
(2008)
http://moviesense.files.wordpress.com/2009/02/diewelle11.jpg?w=670&h=958
Quote: "-So you don't think there could be another dictatorship in Germany?
-No, we are too enlightened now"
A german highschool teacher asks his students if they think that another Nazi-like dictatorship could happen in modern Germany! They immediately say that's impossible so he makes an experiment with them, creating a "club" with an ideology, a leader, a symbol, etc.
Quickly this social unit becomes something bigger than he thought and goes completely out of control!
This film is a very clever lesson in how do bad things begin! Every character idiosyncrasy reflects in some way a social group or a personality type and the way the psychology of group-thinking is shown is disturbing, at least! The performances of some students are really good too!

Il buono, il bruto, il cattivo
a.k.a. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
(1966)
http://www.sobur.co/wp-content/uploads/the-good-bad-ugly.jpg
Quote: "You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend: Those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig."
This movie needs no introduction!
A professional gunslinger and a wanted outlaw form an unstable alliance to find a great amount of gold buried in a cemetery! The two men have to deal with Angel Eyes, a hit man that's also trying to find the gold!
This is one of the best westerns ever made! The way tension is built and solved is only found in Leone's movies. The last scene is on my top 10 of favourite movie scenes - absolutely breath taking!
The direction, the acting, the cinematography, the dialogue and specially the soundtrack all team up to create a masterpiece!
Sergio Leone and Morricone, one of the best pair in the history of the cinema!

This is one of my guilty pleasures! Far from being a masterpiece, I can't stop loving this one! Highly quotable, dark, disturbing and with a very strong political message! This added to a good acting, great dialogues and a great soundtrack makes it very very entertaining!

(2013)
http://static.rogerebert.com/uploads/movie/movie_poster/big-bad-wolves-2014/large_m7ghGEVw3jKi2TXQA52uBQM8IOA.jpg
Quote: "Maniacs are afraid of maniacs."
A series of little girls are kidnapped and found raped and headless afterwards! The father of one of those girls teams up with a detective trying to find the kidnapper! Once they find him they torture him so he would tell them where's the girl's head!
I saw this Israelit movie on my city's horror movie fest and I was totally amazed! It's disturbing, violent, psychologically twisted with a very well managed bit of dark comedy - just the way I like it!
The end is unsettling and I felt exaclty how I should in a great horror movie!

+ rep for City Of God and V For Vendetta. I'd also recommend Bus 174 and while The Wave is based on an actual experiment, I think that it's one that's quite similar to the Standford Experiment of 1971 which Das Experiment was based on.
Also,+ rep for recommending Downfall.
Keep up the good work, Neiba. :)

I like what I've seen so far. City of God Has long been an easy favorite of mine. V for Vendetta is great, but has suffered on the rewatch for me. I just saw The Good, the Bad and the Ugly this last week and loved it, although I think that it pales when compared to For a Few Dollars More.

City of God and The Good, The Bad and the Ugly are excellent. V for Vendetta is a good movie, but I don't love it as much as you and Derek. Never heard of The Wave (although it sounds interesting). Big Bad Wolves was kind of lame, in my opinion.
45.
Léon
a.k.a. The Professional
(1994)
http://grogsmovieblogs.files.wordpress.com/2014/11/mv5bmtgzmzg4mdkwnf5bml5banbnxkftztcwodawndg3oa-_v1__sx640_sy720_.jpg?w=350
Quote: "You don't like Beethoven. You don't know what you're missing. Overtures like that get my... juices flowing. So powerful. But after his openings, to be honest, he does tend to get a little ****ing boring."
Léon, a professional hit man, reluctantly takes in Mathilda, a 12-year-old girl whose parents were murdered. She becomes his protégée and learns how to kill!
When I watched this, I was expecting a lot of action and violence, but nothing else! Well, I found it but what really surprised me was that this movie is not about that! It's about a man and a little girl who had a necessity for true love and they find that in each other! It may sound pedophile talk but the truth is that I never found it twisted, just beautiful!
Also, Jean Reno and Natalie Portman are actor I really like and Gary Oldman delivers an amazing performance of a crazy assassin who listens to Beethoven before killing someone!
Intense from minute 1 till the very end!

Dracula
(1992)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/pt/thumb/4/49/Dracula_%281992%29.jpg/250px-Dracula_%281992%29.jpg
Quote: "Listen to them: the children of the night. What sweet music they make."
Jonathan Harker, a young lawyer, travels to a foreign land to meet a mysterious client - Count Dracula. During a conversation, Dracula sees a picture of Jonathan's fiancée, Minna Murray, and believes that her is the reincarnation of his beloved wife, that killed herself 400 years before. Dracula travels to England where he starts a reign of seduction and terror, starting with the raping and biting of Mina's best friend, Lucy.
Based on the famous Bram Stoker's Dracula (one of my favourite books) this movie is a masterpiece by Francis Ford Copolla!
The atmosphere of this movie is creepy and Gary Oldman is amazing as Dracula, just like I imagined it when I was reading! Also, the soundtrack is one of my absolute favourites!
Only Keanu Reeves is weak on this one!
It's probably the last great movie based on Stoker's novel and one of my favorite adaptations!

(2013)
http://www.underthegunreview.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Her-with-Theodore-Twombly-on-red-movie-poster-wide-300x154.jpg
Quote: " I feel like I can be anything with you. "
A lonely writer buys a revolutionary operating system with a very advanced artificial intelligence and with a female voice! Suddenly he starts looking at it as a person and eventually falls in love with it!
It's a heart crushing story about what really matters in a relationship! Me and my girlfriend watched it together and we could instantly relate to it, because the first 2 years of our relationship were by distance!
The soundtrack is magical, Joaquin Phoenix is a terrific actor, it's masterfully written and the wardrobe is really interesting! However, what made me fall in love with the movie was Scarlett's voice! Rarely I've felt so attracted to someone in a movie, specially someone with no face!

http://fr.web.img5.acsta.net/r_160_240/b_1_d6d6d6/medias/nmedia/18/95/50/99/20504068.jpg
Quote: "I don't know if portuguese people like gaspacho."
IMDB's plot summary: "For thirty years now Maria and José Ribeiro have been living on the ground floor of a Haussmannian building in one of the most exclusive districts of Paris. Everybody loves this nice couple of Portuguese immigrants, Maria for being a topnotch caretaker, José, a construction site supervisor by trade, for helping to do all kinds of jobs in the house. So, the day Maria and José announce their wish to return to Portugal, everybody is crushed. No, they just can't let them do a thing like that...!"
There's not a Portuguese person who doesn't have a friend or a relative that is (or was at some point) an immigrant in France! Personally, I have dozens of cousins there now, and my late grandfather lived there many years ago! I even have a uncle and a aunt that have exactly the same jobs as the couple in the movie, as it's very typical Portuguese people to do that.
One of my relative told me that, when they showed this movie in France, the French were laughing as hell and the Portuguese were crying! I can't think of a movie that translates better the soul of my country and, even if I'm not an immigrant, it was easy to relate!
With two of the best Portuguese actors and a french director who is himself son of Portuguese immigrants, this is a must for anyone who wants to know more about Portugal and its people!

This is the portuguese genre of music: Fado (that means Fate in Portuguese). It's played on the most emotional moment of the movie, so you have an idea the last phrase she sings is: "From the hand of God I accept everything, but I must die in Portugal".

Rosemary's Baby
(1968)
http://www.horrorlair.com/movies/images/rosemarys-baby.jpg
Quote: "Witches... All of them witches!"
Guy (John Cassavetes) and Rosemary Woodhouse (Mia Farrow) are a young couple facing a promising life together. Guy is an actor looking for his big break and Rosemary longs to be a mother. The two just moved into an apartment in the heart of Manhattan where they have as neighbors Roman (Sydney Blackmer) and Minnie Castavet (Ruth Gordon), a caring but nosy elderly couple. Guy develops a close relationship to his neighbors while his wife does not feel very comfortable around them.
Finally, Rosemary’s much desired pregnancy happens but brings unexpected complications: the young woman begins to lose weight and to feel excruciating pains in her stomach.
A series of unusual events, strange noises coming from the apartment next door and a strange obsession revealed by Minnie for her pregnancy, lead Rosemary to a state of complete distrust on those around her and fear for the baby that she’s carrying.
My first review ever (and only one so far) was about this movie! It's an absolute masterpiece by Roman Polanski and one of the best horror movies I've ever seen! The whole atmosphere is terrifying - the soundtrack, the settings, the characters and the way the whole plot is revealed is truly unsettling!

I loved Leon and Dracula. Leon is on my 100, while Dracula is just so wonderfully OTT and theatrical that I can't help but love it. Not seen Her or The Guilded Cage, while Rosemary's Baby isn't something I care for.
I realize that probably no one here saw The Guilded Cage, as it's meant for a very small group of people - portuguese! It's better as a Sociology experiment than as a movie, but I couldn't possibly leave it out of my top because it means a lot to me! :)

Persepolis
(2007)
http://imagens.publico.pt/imagens.aspx/412867?tp=KM&w=220
Quote: "You say that our scarfs and trousers are indecent and that we put on make up, etc. As an art student, I'm often in the studio. I need to move freely in order to draw. A longer scarf will hinder me. As for our trousers, you say they're too wide even though they hide our shape. Since these trousers are in fashion right now, I ask, is religion defending our physical integrity or is it simply opposed to fashion? You criticise us, yet our brothers all have different hair and clothes. Sometimes they wear clothing so tight, we can see their underwear. Why is it that me, as a woman, should their tight clothes have no effect on me, while they should be aroused by a shorter scarf?"
This is an animated movie that centers in the childhood and teen years of a girl during the Islamic Revolution on Iran during the 70s!
I love movies about politics! Not in a pretentious and uninformed way like Argo, but in a honest and straight forward vision, and this is a very good example!
The animation has some amazing details, the story is touching (specially if you consider that it's really close to the reality) and the dialogues are incredibly smart!
The balance of social and historic happenings and the personal issues is achieved in a perfect way creating a very close relationship between the characters and the viewer!
This is not a beautiful story nor does not intend to be, it portraits reality in the most honest way possible, so it gets brutal sometimes, like every historical movie should!

Natural Born Killers
(1994)
http://www.freecodesource.com/movie-poster/512AVKQBNDL/-Natural-Born-Killers-%5BVHS%5D.jpg
Quote: "Baby... by the power invested in me, as God of my world... I pronounce us husband and wife."
A couple of lovers, both with traumatic childhood, become twisted serial killers who just kill for fun! They leave one person alive in each crime scene so she can tell the story, so they become folk heroes, glorified by the mass media.
One of the first scripts Tarantino wrote, and in my opinion, one of the best! Oliver Stone transformed it (too much in Tarantino's opinion) but you still can see some of the genious behind it! If Tarantino had directed this movie himself maybe it could have become even better (or not, who knows?) but the camera angles, blood shed, lightning and editing are amazing from my point of view!
It's pure violence, brutality and chaos, we need some movies like this nowadays!

(1974)
http://i1.wp.com/listverse.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/godfather-2_tn.jpg?resize=550%2C309
Quote: "There are many things my father taught me here in this room. He taught me: keep your friends close, but your enemies closer."
The continuing saga of the Corleone crime family tells the story of a young Vito Corleone growing up in Sicily and in 1910s New York; and follows Michael Corleone in the 1950s as he attempts to expand the family business into Las Vegas, Hollywood and Cuba.
The second best of the trilogy in my opinion, and one of the best sequels in the history of cinema, if not the best! Keeps the same powerful style of the first one, which was very hard to do, and the focus on Vito's young life was a very nice touch and it helps a lot in understanding the true depth of Michael's characters!
The acting of every single actor involved is near perfection but Al Pacino goes off the scale! His change in behavior and in his eyes is terrifying! To witness such a powerful performance is a privilege!
As always, Copolla's directing is fantastic and the plot evolves in a very clever way!

Quote: "It's been proven by history: all mankind makes mistakes."
A couple of very young lovers, both misfits, decide to run away together making a entire town join together and look for them!
This is like nothing I've ever seen!
With a very slow pace and a fascinating simplicity, this movie portraits innocence and love in a beautiful way! Visually, it's astonishing and, even if it has that cold feeling that is present in almost every Wes Anderson's films, it's still delightful to watch and very hard not to smile at!
Also, the kids' acting is superb and Bruce Willis and Ed Norton are really great too!

I'm not really a fan of Wes Anderson, but I prefer Moonrise Kingdom to some of his other efforts. Persepolis I have no interest in whatsoever, largely because of the very unappealing animation style. The Godfather: Part II was on my 70's list and I'm in the minority that actually prefers it to the first film.
I've never read Tarantino's original script for Natural Born Killers, but given my affinity for the director and my general enjoyment of Bonnie-and-Clyde-style scenarios, I'm sure it would have been one of my favorite movies if he had directed it. As it stands, though, despite Oliver Stone's smug approach and his usual ham-fisted delivery of the movie's themes, I still enjoy Natural Born Killers quite a bit. In my teens, I probably would have included it among my favorites, but I seem to like it less and less as time goes by.
As for Wes Anderson, MK is the only one of his films I truly like!
As for NBK, maybe I think like you on that thing of liking it less and less... I remembered watching it and really thinking it was top10 material! I still love it but not as much as when I saw it for the first time! The same goes for Fight Club!

I've seen almost all of Andersons films, and while Moonrise Kingdom isn't my favourite of his this recent rewatch pushed it up a little. It might be the fact that I watched a lot of his past movies and then went back to MK.
All in all a great picks so far though (maybe except for NBK, I never finished it since it urged me to throw up)!

So far you don't have one bad movie in the bunch. There are a couple I haven't seen, but the rest are either movies I really like and a few of my personal favorites as well.
I keep trying to get people that like Prisoners to see Big Bad Wolves, because I think they are similar in quite a few ways but the latter is well done and the former kind of blows. I need to see more films from Israel. What I have seen has been pretty good.

Quote: "I'm going home and watch Star Trek for a dose of sanity."
The story concerns Professor John Oldman, a scientist who summons a group of associates to a cabin one freezing night, and strikes them with a fantastic revelation: he is not a traditional human, but a 14,000 year-old immortal, who has survived centuries of evolution from the Cro-Magnon Era to the present. In the hours to follow, Professor Oldman's earth-shaking assertion about himself challenges the men on spiritual, scientific and historical levels.
This movie is a Sci-Fi masterpiece but it does not have strange creatures, amazing settings or spectacular visual effects. This is just about ideas... 8 people in a room talking about the possibility of immortality!
An absolutely amazing script with a genious story and great acting!
A must for every Sci-Fi lover!

The bride continues her vengeance with Budd, Elle and Bill still on her list!
I thought of doing the Kill Bill movies as one entry but, as I don't think Tarantino did them as one continuous same movie, I'm going to split it!
This is very different from the first one! It's a bit more slow paced and it focus more on past story without so much epic bloody scenes! It has 2 spectacular scenes that I specially love: the coffin scene and the last duel!
As it has a lot more dialogue and goes further into the story, the chronological jumps make more sense in a way!
It drags a bit in the middle but in general it's a hell of a ride!
The first Tarantino on my list, but I'm expecting some more to join!

This movie sums all the questions and intimate struggles a teenager has! Making a very smart use of stereotypes, it travels through teenage minds as nothing I've ever seen! The acting is convincing and the script extremely well written! It's, undoubtedly, one of the best film of the 80's and almost impossible to don't relate to!

Stalker
(1979)
http://www.c-and-co.com/affiches/stalker.jpg
Quote: "A man writes because he is tormented, because he doubts. He needs to constantly prove to himself and the others that he's worth something. And if I know for sure that I'm a genius? Why write then? What the hell for?"
Near a gray and unnamed city is the Zone, an alien place guarded by barbed wire and soldiers. Over his wife's objections, a man rises in the early morning and leaves her with their disabled daughter to meet two men. He's a Stalker, one of a handful who have the mental gifts (and who risk imprisonment) to lead people into the Zone to the Room, a place where one's secret hopes come true. His clients are a burned out popular writer, cynical, and questioning his talent; and a quiet scientist more concerned about his knapsack than the journey. In the deserted Zone, the approach to the Room must be indirect. As they draw near, the rules seem to change and the stalker faces a crisis.
Probably the most deep experience I had while watching a movie. One year from now I'll do another top 50 or top 100 and I'm expecting this to be higher placed, due to re watches.
It's visually very beautiful and the concept made me think for days! I didn't connect emotionally with this because I was trying to understand all the symbolism of each shot but I'll watch it again soon and I'll be more open to that!

Renton, deeply immersed in the Edinburgh drug scene, tries to clean up and get out, despite the allure of the drugs and influence of friends.
This is dark, unpleasant, gritty, violent and extremely dirty - that's why it's so great!
It portraits the drug scene in a perfect way! It's emotional and hilarious at the same time. The acting is great and the cinematography is out of this world!
It would be the perfect anti-drug propaganda, not by condemning drug addicts but for simply showing the reality, what makes it extremely effective.

East Berlin, 1984. Europe is under the Iron Curtain period. An agent of the german secret police conducts surveillance of a writer and his lover, an actress. He eventually finds himself more and more absorbed by their lives, starting to question everything he ever believed.
This is something Hollywood can't produce! This has the German soul! Such honesty and simplicity always focusing what really matters - the human condition!
An amazing soundtrack with some simple but really effective moments, great acting and great pacing!

I remember enjoying The Lives of Others a lot, I thought it was very good. I was a little unsure about the ending though, although that might be to the film's credit actually. The message is pretty clear and presented on a brutal way, the cinematography is off the scale - signature of one of the best directors of the moment - the soundtrack is amazing, it's filled with unforgettable quotes and Norton and Pitt deliver legendary performances. Brad Pitt and Benicio del Toro are great additions to the cast, the cinematography has some real cool moments, the editing is great and the script... oh the script... It is a long and very artistic movie and I'm not part of the group of people that call it tedious or dragged. I think it takes the necessary time to build a character that is neither a villain nor a hero and to make everything sunk deep in the viewers mind.
The last scene is one of the more mysterious things I've ever seen on a movie! It's not especially shocking or surprising but it made me hold my breath for a long time, it made my heart beat twice as normal and it made me cry, all at the same time!

Mary and Max is likely to make my animated list. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is in my top ten, so I echo everything you said about it.
Fight Club is a good movie, but, in my opinion, nowhere near deserving of the ridiculous praise that it so often receives. I'd rank almost every other film in Fincher's filmography ahead of it. Barry Lyndon is a gorgeous, impressive film, but not a particularly enjoyable one. I once started watching Snatch, but turned it off less than thirty minutes into it, which is something I almost never do. I've never given it a second chance and I've avoided Guy Ritchie ever since.
While Richie seems to be the go to; bad director for Comedians to slag off especially here in the UK, i still really enjoy Snatch and especially Lock Stock, every time i see them. Both no doubt have multiple flaws, but for what they are supposed to be i think they were executed fairly well. Lock Stock is also the only thing i can stomach Vinnie Jones in.

As a solo violin player to accompany his old Jewish or Gypsy musicians he wants Anne-Marie Jacquet, a young virtuoso violinist. If they all overcome the hardships ahead, this very special concert will be a triumph.
If you like classical music, you have to watch this! It's based on the Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto, an amazing masterpiece and one of my personal absolute favourites.
However, it's about more than music. It's about politics, human tragedy, obsession, failure and second chances. It's funny and very emotional.

In an attempt to hold his family together and help his son survive the horrors of a Jewish Concentration Camp, Guido imagines that the Holocaust is a game and that the grand prize for winning is a tank.
I laughed so much on the first half of this as I cried during the second half. And that contrast is the most powerful weapon of this movie. It gives depth to the characters, it makes us relate with them and it enlarges the impact of the brutality of a concentration camp.
However, it's on the middle of that brutality that it manages to show hope and love in a way few movies can.

I loved The Man From Earth. One of these days I'll do a review. It's a small Indy Film, not flashy, but though provoking. In some ways it reminds me of the "A Question for all Atheist" thread.

Quote: "On the day of my judgment, when I stand before God, and He asks me why did I kill one of his true miracles, what am I gonna say? That it was my job? My job?"
Death Row guards at a penitentiary, in the 1930's, have a moral dilemma with their job when they discover one of their prisoners, a convicted murderer, has a special gift.
When I started watching it, I looked how long it was and I thought I would be boring... Instead I happened to be hypnotized by it during its entire 3 hours!
It's a movie about everything a movie should be about, totally based on the characters and with a perfect cast! It may be a fantasy movie but it's more real than most "based on true story" films!

The story follows the sexually charged adventures of Dr. Bill Harford, who is shocked when his wife, Alice, reveals that she had contemplated an affair a year earlier. He embarks on a night-long adventure, during which he infiltrates a massive masked orgy of an unnamed secret society.
Last Kubrick's film and the last piece of the puzzle that is understanding is way of thinking! As every other movies he made, this is as intense as a movie can get!
Kidman and Cruise are great in their parts but this goes beyond any individual performance. The scene at the house is overwhelming and it gives an impressive dynamic to the rest of the film! The camera work is astonishing, the soundtrack is amazing, every shot of this is so carefully thought that the result is an immaculate masterpiece.
Kubrick's work is about finding the true nature and motivation of people and in his last work, he gets the closest to the answer!

Never heard of The Concert, but judging by that poster and your write-up, it sounds like a good cure for insomnia. Not much interest in watching Life is Beautiful, either.
Peter Sellers as Quilty is both everything that's right and wrong with Lolita. I agree that he's the most entertaining aspect of the film and that he steals the show, but his character in the book, although integral to the plot, is barely featured at all. I think it's a flaw in the film that Quilty overshadows Humbert Humbert and Lolita. Besides, it's basically impossible to film a true adaptation of Lolita with an underage actress without going to jail. In the movie, all we get is naughty whispering, whereas the novel is fairly explicit, albeit with beautiful, flowery prose. I like the movie, but the book is far superior.
I love nude Nicole Kidman, massive orgies, and strange people wearings masks. I've seen bits and pieces of The Green Mile, but never the full movie. The Truman Show is a good movie with a great premise, but I don't love it as much some.
Well, I don't know how much you like classical music, if you do you should give Le Concert a chance. Hell,if you don't like classical music you should give it a chance too! :p
I never read Lolita, but you're not the first person that tells me that. I will try to find some time to read it and we can speak about it later! :)

Quotes: "I can't remember anything without you."
When their relationship turns sour, a couple undergoes a procedure to have each other erased from their memories. But it is only through the process of loss that they discover what they had to begin with.
When I watched this film, me and my 5-year girlfriend had very recently broken up, so you probably have an idea how much I could relate with this. Some months later we got back together and I found out that she also watched it during the time we were apart. This is a very personal choice, probably the most personal in this entire list, so it's hard to judge this film from an unbiased point of view.
Still, I can say that the writing is amazing and Jim Carrey delivers another incredible performance, again outside of comedy. It may look surreal at some points but the feelings portrayed are really honest and pure.
If you ever have loved and lost, you will recognize yourself in every minute of this movie.

I am not a huge fan of japanese anime. That said, Spirited Away is a beautiful movie.
Every creature, as much as strange as it can look, is extremely lovable and the fact that every character acts like it was a normal world is fascinating. The evolution of Chihiro was really interesting too and the fact that we discover everything when she does creates a big empathy between the audience and the main character.
Finally, the soundtrack is beautiful and essential on creating a magic atmosphere thoughout the entire film.

This is far from being a regular crime film. It's based only on dialogue (and what an amazing script Tarantino wrote) with an exciting tonic of extreme violence. The ear scene will always be one of my absolute favourite ones.
With impressive performances from every one involved, terrific dialogues and great soundtrack (Tarantino shows the world his main fingerprint for the first time ever), this film is the first bomb Quentin Tarantino dropped on the history of cinema and one of his best works so far.

When you make a film using only 12 characters and a room you must have a brilliant script, flawless plot and good acting or else it will not hold up. This film has precisely that!
The tension is built during the whole movie and each character has so much depth that you begin to understand everyone's point of view. You start to have a personal opinon on the case and every argument makes you change it.
This is the ultimate proof that you only need your brain and some good actors to makes a memorable movie.

12 Angry Men is an excellent movie. Definitely the best courtroom drama I've ever seen, although technically it never takes place in a courtroom. To echo what you said in your write-up, 12 Angry Men also serves as proof that you don't need flashy special-effects or exotic locales or a busy plot to make a movie compelling and engaging.

I want him to know I want him to know. And I want them all to know they'll all soon be as dead as O-Ren."
The Bride wakens from a four-year coma. The child she carried in her womb is gone. Now she must wreak vengeance on the team of assassins who betrayed her - a team she was once part of.
This is Tarantino going full-extreme! This volume does not develop the story so well as the second one but the action scenes, the camera angles, the lighting, the sounds, every bit of cinematography is perfect! Tarantino works every detail of this movie with astonishing perfection and Uma Thurman is a great choice to play The Bride.
The way over-the-top bloody scenes are just beautiful. It's like you're watching, you're finding it impossibe to happen or even ridiculous but you can't take your eyes off the screen for one second because everything happens so quickly and the amount of adrenaline in each scene is overwhelming.

I much prefer the superior Vol. 2 over the first Kill Bill, but the points you are making I totally agree with. Even back when I didn't understand cinema as I do now, I always went back to the first Kill Bill for it's highly entertaining adrenaline-fueled action sequences! It was a fun twisted ride and I knew or at least hoped that some day I would love it. And now I do, but not as much as the second one which I see as one of Tarantino's best works. Especially script-wise. But neither that did I love back when I saw it the first time.
But awesome list still! Looking forward to the few high ones left!

I prefer Vol. II since it feels so much like a spaghetti western, but both volumes of Kill Bill are fantastic. I especially love The Crazy 88's sequence.
American Beauty is a great movie, although I've only seen it once.
I don't agree with you that Vertigo is Hitchcock's "best movie by far," but even though I prefer a few of his other films, there's no denying that it's a marveling piece of film-making.

Inglourious Basterds

Quote: "You know somethin', Utivich? I think this just might be my masterpiece."
In Nazi-occupied France during World War II, a plan to assassinate Nazi leaders by a group of Jewish U.S. soldiers coincides with a theatre owner's vengeful plans for the same.
I lost count of how many times I've watched this and I still love it like the first time.
Amazing performances by everyone, specially Chritoph Waltz (where was he during all this time?), a great spaghetti-western feeling created by some wonderful camera work and a carefully and brilliantly chosen soundrack and some of the best writing ever done!
Starting by the beggining: The opening scene is one of the most powerful things ever put on a screen and my absolute favourite piece of cinema ever! Col. Hans Landa is the best character Tarantino ever wrote and Christoph Waltz doesn't let us forget that. The construction and solving of tension during the entire first chapter is, by itself, a masterpiece, only found in Leone's best movies.
Then enter Brad Pitt and the Basterds. The Bear Jew segment is pure gold and creeps me out every single time!
The next two chapters are a bit calmer, with amazing performances by Fassbender and Mélanie Laurent, and obviously preparing for a big Tarantino-like finale!
The last chapter has everything: Plans succeeding, plans going wrong, a lot of killing, explosions, funny scenes (Pitt speaking Italian is priceless), intense dialogues and more killing! It ends with a quote "I think this just might be my masterpiece" while an italian Tarantella is playing (coincidence??? I don't think so!).

Inglorious Basterds was what actually got me really into Tarantino and made me go back and rediscover his filmography. Therefore it will always be kind of special to me.
But I've since watched it like 4 or 5 times and it doesn't stand as strong for me anymore as it once did, but still I really love it of course! Great fun movie but I wouldn't rank it that high, not even on a QT-only list. But it's your list, and I enjoy reading it still!

MovieMeditation, how would you rank the Tarantino movies you've seen?
Those I've seen? You don't expect I've seen all of them or what? :p
Hehe but so you know it, I'm a huge fan of his and Tarantino is defiantly in my top 5 if not top 3 directors of all time. I think it's hard to rank his work as they are pretty much all great in their own sense, but I'll do a ranking and point out what in particular makes the mentioned work stand out to me...
1. Kill Bill vol. 2 - script and dialogue is top notch; story perfectly constructed
2. Django Unchained - entertainment level is sky high, soundtrack awesome and performances supreme
3. Reservoir Dogs - story is really interesting but it's the characters that are in focus and carrying this movie
4. Kill Bill vol. 1 - the visual style and homage is spot on and the movie one hell of a ride
5. Pulp Fiction - groundbreaking but not at the time I watched it; that said it gets better and better with each viewing
6. Inglourious Basterds - inventive period piece but a bit uneven though always entertaining
7. Jackie Brown - a story not by Tarantino and it shows; basically it's his signature dialogue placed in a slow paced crime drama story
8. Death Proof - pure B-movie fun, but it's missing pretty much all the other movie elements; still classic Tarantino though
Again, the order could easily be arranged by tomorrow or what not, they all got their own to offer, and I just love his movies! ;)

(1964)
http://static.rogerebert.com/uploads/movie/movie_poster/dr-strangelove-1964/large_512N3nHiwJWUQO2ORoqi49RwcKT.jpg
Quotes: "Mein Führer! I can walk!"
An insane general triggers a path to nuclear holocaust that a war room full of politicians and generals frantically try to stop.
Full of legendary scenes and memorable quotes this movie is a dark-humour classic. To take a matter so serious at the time it was recorded and place it in a satire like this, is pure genious!
Besides the flawless plot, writing and cinematography there's the amazing Peter Sellers with a remarkable triple performance!
It's, without a doubt, one of the best comedy films ever and, at the same time, one of the best war movies.

C'era una volta il West
a.k.a. Once Upon a Time in the West
(1968)
http://matthewpickle.files.wordpress.com/2011/02/once_upon_a_time_in_the_west.jpg?w=700
Quote: "You know, Jill, you remind me of my mother. She was the biggest whore in Alameda and the finest woman that ever lived. Whoever my father was, for an hour or for a month - he must have been a happy man."
Epic story of a mysterious stranger with a harmonica who joins forces with a notorious desperado to protect a beautiful widow from a ruthless assassin working for the railroad.
The history of cinema is full of famous duos, but none achieved the brilliance of Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone, in my opinion.
There are a lot of director who are good at creating tension, Hitchock is probably the most well known. However, Leone succeeds in solving that tension like no-one else. He pushes it beyond the obvious, leading to an insane explosion of adrenaline each time. And he uses the amazing work of Morricone, the actors' looks instead of words and extremely clever camera angles to accomplish that.
Besides that, he uses the amazing talent of the cast. Bronson, Cardinale and Fonda are flawless enough to make us forget of Eastwood and Lee van Cleef, and that says it all.
This has no possible comparison with a traditional western but I can't stop thinking how much this redefined the entire genre!

2001: A Space Odyssey
(1968)
http://jaysanalysis.files.wordpress.com/2010/06/2001_a_space_odyssey1.gif?w=200&h=300
Quote: "Dave, stop. Stop, will you? Stop, Dave. Will you stop Dave? Stop, Dave."
Humanity finds a mysterious, obviously artificial, object buried beneath the Lunar surface and, with the intelligent computer H.A.L. 9000, sets off on a quest.
Every single aspect of this masterpiece screams PERFECTION!
The concept behind is, by itself, fascinating, but it's how Kubrick translates it on the screen that really is astonishing in every level. The sound is so perfectly done, being the glorious soundtrack or just diegetic sounds (respiration, absence of sound in space, etc.) and when there's dialogue, it's incredible!
The slow pace lets us sit back and just enjoy the pure Beauty of each shot, the perfection of each detail, since the glorious opening scene until the mind blowing last one.
Finally, HAL-9000 is one of the most cold, evil and creepy villains of the history of cinema and each time he appears on the screen it gives me chills!
Stanley Kubrick lived a century ahead of his time, and the proof is that he made a Sci-Fi that still reduces every single Sci-Fi done before or after to almost nothing.

A Clockwork Orange
(1971)
http://www.impawards.com/1971/posters/clockwork_orange_ver2.jpg
Quote: "There was me, that is Alex, and my three droogs, that is Pete, Georgie, and Dim, and we sat in the Korova Milkbar trying to make up our rassoodocks what to do with the evening. The Korova milkbar sold milk-plus, milk plus vellocet or synthemesc or drencrom, which is what we were drinking. This would sharpen you up and make you ready for a bit of the old ultra-violence."
In future Britain, charismatic delinquent Alex DeLarge is jailed and volunteers for an experimental aversion therapy developed by the government in an effort to solve society's crime problem - but not all goes according to plan.
My first Kubrick's and still my favourite. It grabs you from the very first second and does not let you go.
I never saw a movie with a soundtrack so well chosen and so well coordinated with the image. The same goes to the colours used on this movie.
If technically this is already a masterpiece, the best thing about this movie is the physical and emotional reaction it creates on the viewers. The first time I finished this I couldn't move or talk for a long time, I just kept looking at the wall in front of me. I didn't know what to think, I didn't quite understand what I was feeling but I was sure I had just witnessed something great. I watched it some years later after learning more about cinema and it had a even stronger effect on me.
I have been thinking about rewatching it again, and I am almost sure if this goes anywhere in the next list I do, is all way up to the first place.

Quote: "Say 'what' again. Say 'what' again, I dare you, I double dare you mother****er, say what one more ******* time"
The lives of two mob hit men, a boxer, a gangster's wife, and a pair of diner bandits intertwine in four tales of violence and redemption.
I thought about where to put Pulp Fiction on my Top. I knew it had to be high, but I wasn't sure how high.
What made me decide is simple: it's the first great movie I watched ever; It's the reason I love cinema so much these days; It's the masterpiece of one of the men I respect the most, Quentin Tarantino, and it has everything I love about a movie.
There's not much I can say about it that was never said and repeated 1000 times before: It changed the american independent movie making for good, it has some of the most amazing wrinting in the history of cinema, it has incredible performances, legendary scenes and memorable quotes. I still know by heart the entire dialogue of the hamburger scene and I think I am not the only one in this forum. And it has a great performance of a portuguese actress, so... :p
Pulp Fiction will always be special to me and I will always come back to it no matter how many movies I watch.

Also saw Dogs at the cinema when that was released... And Jackie Brown. Haven't bothered with any others.
