So, here are some of the names we're considering. Vote. Pictures from another thread included for reference:

Elaboration on each:

Ike
Full name would be "Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces." Obviously. Bonus reason: my family already has dogs named Major and Colonel.

Tuco
A reference to Eli Wallach's character in The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Bonus reason: it's movie-related. Leaves open the possibility of naming future dogs "Blondie" or "Angel Eyes."

McCutchen
A reference to Andrew McCutchen, star outfielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Would probably be called "Cutch."

Hugo Baskerville
A reference to The Hound of the Baskervilles. Would be called "Hugo." Bonus reasons: wife loves Sherlock stories, the name is dog-related, and one of the other characters in the story is named Charlie, which was the dog's shelter name.

Backup
A reference to Veronica Mars. Her dad tells her to "take Backup" on a stakeout, and it turns out Backup is a dog.

Voigan

Bonus reasons: wife loves Sherlock stories, the name is dog-related, and one of the other characters in the story is named Charlie, which was the dog's shelter name.I highlighted the reason that I think this name is best. I think it's important to factor his shelter name in when you name him because I think it's bad luck if you don't. Well, we've almost definitely got it narrowed down to Ike or Hugo. We like them both the most, and you guys do, too, so that's cool.

Because Tuco was a tribute to Eli Wallach, the wife did suggest Eli, which I like as well, but probably not as much.

Gonna try to decide by the end of the day. Pretty tricky. It kinda feels like Ike would be for me/him, and Hugo would be in large part for the fun of explaining it to others. Tough call.

But what about GoDoggo?

Godoggo picked the name Hugo Barkersville too. ;)

Actually, Godoggo isn't a bad name for a dog, but I can see some confusion and possible embarrassment on my part if he were to name his dog that. As in Yoda posting, "Today Godoggo pooped on the floor and got a serious time out. Or "Godoggo ate the trash again today." Or even worse, "I really wish I could get Godoggo to stop smelling everyone's crotch. " :(

You seem to have it narrowed down to two names, so why don't you let the puppy pick? Put the puppy in the middle of the room, and have two people stand at opposite ends of the room. Each person says a different name, and see who the puppy goes to first.

I like human names too but it can be a little awkward if you meet people that have kids the same name. I always find non-doggy type people to be a little put out when they find your dog has the same name as their kid. Happened to me once with my old dog Mollie, when I was cooing over a new baby in the park I asked the kids name , she said Mollie and my son said that's my dogs name - she wasn't too impressed.

One of the first black men I ever met -- maybe even THE first black man -- was named Ike. No, it wasn't Ike Turner. He lived a few houses down from me when I was a kid. Him and his wife. Don't know if he beat her up all the time, though. I never heard screaming.

Maybe that's why everyone feels Ike is right for your dog. Your dog's black. There must be something about being black and having a greater chance of being called Ike because of it.

There's an Ike on The Waltons. He's actually a white Ike. Ike Godsey, the storekeeper. Played by Joe Conley (1928 - 2013).

Anyway, I see nothing wrong with giving dogs human names. In fact, I remember reading a psychology article about what kind of person you are based on what kind of name you give your dog, and I remember it said that you're more caring and considerate and a humanitarian if you give your dog a real person's name, instead of some other kind of odd name. They're names. They exist. And the animals are living creatures. Why not give them a good human name? Practically every pet I've had had a human name. I wouldn't feel right calling an animal something like "Ruff" or whatever. I once knew these people who named their Labrador after a word on their trashcan. The company name for their trash pick-up service. It was ridiculous.

I've had guinea pigs named Murray and now Bob. Everyone loves that Bob's name is Bob. I think it's hilarious to call a small black furry creature that makes wheeking noises "Bob." :)

I already have names picked out for any future pigs (assuming they're male): probably Norman or Carl.

To be fair, though, you don't have to call out a guinea pig's name with the same frequency or public nature as a dog or cat's name, so that probably helps. And you can change a pig's name any time you want because they have no clue what their names are (even though I do talk to them and scold them like they're toddlers).

The other two pigs I've had were Ajax and now Frid (named after actor Jonathan Frid). Everyone thinks his name is Fred, though, and I'm just mispronouncing it.

I laughed reading this. It is very funny.
I have similar issues as Yoda would have if he'd named the dog Chris. Friends will ask, "How's Bob doing?" and I'll say (in front of anyone, even people who don't know Bob is a guinea pig), "Fine, but he poops everywhere and stinks up my office."

I had a rabbit named Sonic after Sonic the Hedgehog because he was cute and little, and he ran very fast.

My Mom likes to name her dogs after Shakespeare's characters. She's had dogs named Hamlet, Ophelia, and Lady Macbeth.

Posted this in The Shoutbox, but I like my routines, and Ike has destroyed them. Been five days and we've yet to reestablish much. Hopefully he'll learn quick. Food, sleep, and work are all kinda wonky right now.

Yeah, you're going to have to establish new routines around the dog. :p

Name the Bobcat Bob and get a cat named Cat and then you can call them both simultaneously with one word.

Yoda, my daughter's cat is named "Neko".. which is Japanese for "cat"..

I know a lot of dogs named DOG but pronounced Dee oh gee. I think everyone that names their dog that thinks they are being super original not realizing that a bunch of other people have done it as well already.

I gave my budgie a name, but I've never really used it.
Took about 3 weeks to find the name for him as I was teaching him things and needed to find what sort of personality he had.
I named him Sh*tbox due to all the swearing and pooping he does.

I just call him Bird or Birdie now.
"Hey, Bird!!" when I go into the kitchen first thing in the morning.

I don't recommend him at all. I do however highly recommend Ian Dunbar. He actually has a really good puppy book.

Thanks for the recommendation. My puppy is almost finished with this one so he'll need another.
