Since Halloween is on Friday, I thought I'd ask the question:
What Scares You?
http://www.movieforums.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=18196&stc=1&d=1414339863
Here is something that scares me: Outer Space.
This fear was on display a little bit in my thread Save Me from The Space Elevator! (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=37411)
I can get scared thinking about outer space and the fact that we're all living on a planet in outer space. I fear something horrible happening like the sun going out or the moon disappearing or Earth takes off out of orbit at a speed that we can all FEEL and suddenly it's like a roller coaster you can't get off of unless you die, which might happen (if Earth takes off). All of this is probably totally irrational and not going to happen... and they may even say it can't happen... but still, I sometimes worry... what if it does? What if they're wrong and something horrible like this happens? I can really freak myself out thinking about it.
Aliens in outer space... they don't really bother me. I would rather see Earth surrounded by UFOs than have the sun disappear on us. Well, maybe. I'm sure aliens would scare the Hell out of me, too... but they don't scare me as much as the (unlikely) possibility that something horrible might happen in outer space or to our planet.
http://www.movieforums.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=18197&stc=1&d=1414340954
And to make it worse, every now and then we get a comet scare, too. I see that frequently on the news. They tell us a comet came very close to the Earth -- "but it wouldn't have hit us!!"
Also -- planets in outer space. Sometimes seeing pictures of the planets makes me feel a little scared. I'll get vertigo. I become too aware that we're hurtling around in outer space.
That scares me.
What scares you?

I'm finding keeping my atheism a secret is more important than keeping my schizophrenia a secret, in the real world. I don't want to keep either a secret though. F the haters! #hatersgonnahate

That's a definite fear of mine. More specifically sharks, but all the other monsters frighten me also.
Something else that scares me is walking outside at night. I've seen way too many found footage films and I'm always afraid I'm going to point my flashlight somewhere and something horrible is going to come into view.
It's so dark where I live. No street lights, so if the sky is overcast you can't see very far at night at all. Sometimes I can't even see my dog at the end of his leash.
I will third Skepsis's answer.

This planet's already f**ked up because of the people. I'm used to it.
What's scary now is the randomness that could happen. Like, is the sun gonna go out? Or is cancer gonna grow all over my face tomorrow? Stuff like that. Stuff you can't control and escape from.
Like, is the sun gonna go out?
No. It will eventually become a red giant, actually, but not in your lifetime. Not for a long-ass time, in fact.

I know, but the phobia is -- what if for some reason, it happens TODAY? What if scientists are wrong? What if something unexpected comes up and suddenly END OF THE WORLD!
The fact that it's gonna happen is bad enough. But what if for some reason it happens next week?
People are expected to live 70-80 years and can even live much longer, but you can also die the day you're born.
Oh, I see. Yeah, phobias are usually irrational.

Leaving aside that this pretty clearly isn't the kind of "scared" the thread is about, these surveys are super goofy. For one, the survey in question was specifically about religious orientation. So what does "distrust" mean in that context, exactly? There's no legitimate way to rate the trustworthiness of large, non-specific groups of people, so even asking the question pretty much forces people to use some proxy.
And that proxy is clearly fervency of agreement/disagreement. If you look at the cross-tabs of the poll, it just shows people "distrusting" the groups they disagree with most. About three out of four atheists "distrust" evangelical Christians. And they distrusted Mormons even more than people in general distrusted them. Should this "scare" evangelical Christians and Mormons?
Surveys like this are designed to produce headlines that people can either be smug or outraged about, depending on their preexisting beliefs. They're certainly not designed to teach us anything.

SC, I've thought about the perilous fate of Earth too.
An asteroid strike would be bad, very bad. If the asteroid was real big that could wipe out everything.
But a Gamma radiation burst directed at Earth from a nearby star going supernova would be the worse way to go. Somewhat unlikely, then again, unlikely things happen all the time.
Mega Disasters TV show, season 2 episode 15 "Gamma Ray Burst" aired on September 11, 2007
"Every few seconds, a supernova emits jets of deadly gamma rays somewhere in the universe. If one of these gamma ray bursts should happen sufficiently close to the solar system, all life would perish."

There is one thing in the ocean that does scare me. I'm not trying to be funny either. Methane Hydrate.
It's methane gas held in an icy lattice structure at the bottom of certain areas of the ocean floor. It is 'held in check' or contained by the pressure of the Earth's oceans and the cold temperatures on the sea floor.
If a block of Methane Hydrate is hauled up to the surface it quickly vaporizes relishing methane into the atmosphere. Methane is a greenhouse gas that is much more worse than carbon dioxide for reattaining heat, approximately 30 times more so.
There's enough methane gas in the form of Methane Hydrate to severally alter the Earth's climate if it was released. It only takes a rise in the ocean temperatures above a certain point to release it. The Earth's oceans are already warming. I'm not trying to scare anyone but the idea that the Earth's environment is as stable as a rock is fallacy.
Note: this is from the top of my head, not from a news article. You might want to read more opinions on the subject. I'm not an expert.

Heights.
I'm afraid of heights too, but I've been trying to get over that fear for years. When I was younger, my fear of heights was so bad that if I went someplace high and looked down, I would literally get dizzy, panic, and pass out. I even passed out at a Broadway show when I was younger because I went with a camp and they bought balcony seats. All I remember is sitting down in the balcony seats, my friend asked me if I was okay, and the next thing I knew, I woke up downstairs in a great seat on the lower level just before the show started. To this day, I have no idea how I got there.
I've gotten better over the years, but I still have a big problem with heights. I've even been to the top of the Statue of Liberty without passing out. I was terrified, but I didn't pass out. :D

Space scares me too. Out of all of the 8 (9 if you're in denial) planets in the solar system, earth is the only planet that has all the right conditions for life and anything can make that end. The sun could suddenly turn supernova and completely destroy everything in the solar system, the poles could just suddenly flip like Uranus's, a literal shooting star (yes, they are actually real) could come flying through the system and swallow earth, a massive asteroid could smash into the planet and the magnetosphere could just disappear and we could end up like Venus or Mars. Of course, those things ever happening is 1 in 1 trillion but it's still pretty scary to think about.

It is far more scarier than oceans and beaches and sharks. People are so afraid to think about it. I think that even though we're MOST LIKELY safe... I think there's still that slight chance that something awful could happen. If it doesn't happen in our lifetime, it might happen in some other people's lifetime. Or it will happen, I dunno.
Even if nothing happens, space is still scary to think about because it's so vast and so dark and so... mysterious. As Madonna says in "Like a Prayer" -- Life is a Mystery.

The only thing about the ocean that gives me the creeps is if I was in open water with no boat... and I have been in that situation as a kid when I frequented a boating club and we got capsized in the middle of the North Sea.
It's not drowning, or sharks or something obvious.
It's the fact you're floating with nothing below you but water. The unknown distance between you and the seabed. That void of nothing but blackness.
Maybe it's a heights thing? I get the same impression I'd have the same feeling if I was in a space shuttle looking down at Earth... the massive void between me and the ground. Watching Gravity a couple weeks ago made me feel uneasy and it was simply down to the void between them, and the Earth.
Weird thing is, heights as a rule, don't bother me, I can climb ladders, stand on a roof or cliff top, no problem... I think vast amounts of empty space does bother me though if that empty space is between me and the floor, like floating on the surface of the deep sea or floating in space.

The "empty space" is so scary because it means AUTOMATIC DEATH.
It represents the darkness and mystery of death. Space is death. Space is symbolically death. It's the unknown and to be out there in it -- or to be out in the ocean with no safety net -- is to be submerged in death. Death is all around you. It's possible everywhere. You see it in plain sight. That's why I find outer space so scary.
Look around you right now. You don't feel scared of your surroundings because you can be more carefree where you are (unless you're in Compton). You don't see death around you because you just see... home or wherever you are. Yeah, there are ways you COULD die where you are, but it's much more unlikely. But if you're out in the middle of space... space is not hospitable to life. Jump out or take off your space mask... DEATH. Fall into the ocean and don't swim back up? Go too deep? No oxygen tank? DEATH.

Asteroid impact threw biological junk into space and it found its way to Earth. Mars is basically Earth but is older, meaning it almost had the capability to support life, but has died over time, plus it's too far from the Sun.
All of our water is from asteroid impacts too. Asteroids are just frozen water mostly anyway plus a few rocks and they've discovered some Asteroid and Comets contain organic matter... once the ball of rock cools down, the steam and stuff can settle into lakes and oceans and the organics can take hold once mixed into the liquid water which in turn has mixed with other minerals and stuff contained in the planet's rocks.

If we find life on another Planet or Moon.
What the hell will religious types do? My fears are there'll be anarchy, rioting, looting, murders...
They reckon there's life on Europa, Jupiter's ice moon. There's heat and stuff comes from Jupiter's gravitational pull, even geysers have been recorded as spewing out of cracks in the frozen surface, meaning under the surface is a vast ocean of liquid water.
Maybe we came from there? A geyser threw stuff out which came here and then spread. Life has been shown to survive in almost absolute zero temperatures, once heated up it comes back to animated life.
But yeah, if we found life somewhere else, the reaction of the people is what scares me.

I've thought about this, too, and worried about it.
I think they would only freak out if the alien life was intelligent, like us. Thus, why we have stories of alien conspiracies and coverups -- if the world knew, the world would panic.
If we discovered alien life that was more... animal, insect or microbial... I don't think... they might, but I don't think they'd freak out as bad. I dunno.
It would depend on what we find.
I really think they'd keep it top secret. They really might have already found alien life. It might have even already been to this planet. I'm not really sure what I think about aliens and UFOs... I used to believe in them, but I used to believe in a lot of other things, too. That's something I've actually thought of bringing up as a topic of discussion for a thread -- aliens and if we believe they've been here. A lot of people believe aliens exist SOMEWHERE out there, but what if they've been here and there's been a coverup?
Atheist types (and I don't mean to bash you atheists, but this is just something I've seen) say that believing that aliens have come to Earth is as stupid as believing in God... but personally, based on what I know/how I feel right now, I don't see how it's the same thing. I could believe the government would coverup aliens. I understand people think that obsessing over aliens is just symptomatic of the times we live in... but still. If aliens are out there, I think they very well could have visited here.

One of those videos, can't remember which one, has a woman who worked for NASA...
She said any image with possible UFO footage gets edited. Digital editing has been used by NASA for years and years and they doctor the photos before showing them to the public.
