My last Top 100 thread has more than one Top 100 in it, and has sat unused for quite a while...

Some of the same and also a bunch of new entries... relatively new Top 10 as well...

There's a good amount of superhero movies I haven't seen yet, but so far, First Class is my favorite. It's the movie that got me into these types.

Haven't seen Willow or Night of the Living Dead in a while, but they're old favorites.

The Mist and Star Wars are awesome and Dog Soldiers was pretty great too.

I liked Prometheus and The Abyss.

Don't care about Star Trek and haven't seen the others.

I like Die Hard with a Vengence a lot, but I strongly prefer the first 2.

Absolutely love Dawn of the Dead.

The Rodent
10-18-14, 12:17 AM
I think this is the best 100 I've made so far... some stuff in there people will frown at but it's not a list based on quality exactly, it's based on my preference like with my other lists I made a few years back.

I think this is probably my most balanced list anyways. A lot of Treks at the bottom end, sure, but the rest is pretty strong throughout I reckon.

Taken me a couple weeks for this one... had a load going on and off the list, some going on and staying on etc... I spent most of Tuesday organising the final list and then reorganising it... taken ages to put this one together.

The nicest thing I can say about this list so far is that it's . . . interesting. ;)

Star Trek just isn't my kinda thing, so I've never watched any of the television shows or films, and I have no desire in changing that. Prometheus and Man of Steel were enormous disappointments. I liked the first Kick-Ass quite a bit, but the sequel was poor.

On the positive side, I love X-Men: First Class, which is one of my favorite superhero films. I'm also fond of The Burbs, The Mist, and Night of the Living Dead (still the best zombie film ever made, imo). I haven't seen Willow since I was a little kid. I liked it back then, but I fear that I'd have the same reaction as Miss Vicky if I re-watched it today.

+ rep for X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan.

Unlike most people, I love X-Men Origins: Wolverine. It's one of my favorite superhero movies, and it made me really appreciate Liev Schreiber as an actor. I didn't realize how good he is until I saw him as Sabretooth (Victor Creed) in this, and also in Kate and Leopold. Now I always look forward to seeing any movies starring either Hugh Jackman or Liev Schreiber.

Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan was the Star Trek movie that made me become a Trekkie. My Mom was a Trekkie for years, but most of the episodes I had seen were third season episodes, (which are some of the worst episodes), so I couldn't understand why she loved Star Trek so much. The she dragged me (practically kicking and screaming) to see Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and I hated it.

But when she couldn't find anyone to go with her to see Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, I offered to go with her, even though I had no interest in the movie. (Sometimes you do nice things for your mom just because she's your mom, and you love her. :) )

That's when I found out why she loved Star Trek. The movie wasn't just a great sci-fi movie, it was also a great action/adventure movie. Plus, the characters were great too. I loved the way they played off each other, especially Spock and McCoy. I've been a die-hard Trekkie since then. :)

Well you have indeed started to turn the tide a bit Rodent. You've had a bunch of films I rather like (Burbs, The Mist, Star Wars, Kick Ass 2, Wrath of Khan, X-Men) and a host that I love, including some that not many others recognise the greatness of - First Contact, Die Hard With a Vengeance, Judgment Night, Universal Soldier, Wall-e, Empire Strikes Back and of course the Turtles. Was surprised to see First Contact up there though, I thought you'd said in the past that was your least favourite Trek film.

Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back is arguably the best of all the Star Wars movies.

Unlike many Trekkies, I like the new Star Trek movies, including Star Trek Into Darkness. I think Karl Urban is fantastic as Dr. McCoy.

I like all of the X-Men movies. They're all exciting action movies.

I haven't seen Pirates Of The Caribbean since it was released, but I remember it being a pretty good movie.

I'm not a big fan of Arnold Schwarzenegger, but The Terminator is an amazing movie. It's probably Michael Biehn's best movie.

Star Wars VI: Return Of The Jedi was a great ending to the original Star Wars trilogy.

Jaws scared the heck out of me when I first saw it, and I still won't go swimming in the ocean. (And I live on Long Island, so there are a lot of beaches around here.)

The only thing that I didn't like about the new Star Trek movie was the relationship between Kirk and Uhura. Other than that, it was a great movie, and I love most of the casting choices for the main crewmembers.

It's the non-fan of animation in me I think that puts WALL-E so low.

If it's any consolation, I did give it the magical 101% in my reviews though.

I love animated movies, and WALL-E is likely to be at the top of my animation list. It's one of the last movies that I saw in the theater, and I went back several times to see it again because I couldn't wait for the DVD to come out.

Dawn higher than Night? The mall 'free time' scenes are great, but I prefer the hopelessness of the first one.
That's the right way around, that's why. Dawn is better than Night and they're both better than Day. There again, Land is better than Day.
Jaws is too low, but Predator 2 is severely underrated. + rep
Really? Underrated? I saw it a month or two ago and I thought it was terrible. Even worse than I remembered.

+ rep for all three movies.

Superman: The Movie is one of my all-time favorite superhero movies. It didn't have all the action and flash of some of the newer movies, but it was a great story with a nice mix of drama, romance, and comedy. Christopher Reeve was amazing as both Clark Kent and Superman, and nobody will ever top Gene Hackman as Lex Luther.

I saw the The Lost Boys in a pre-release screening many months before it was actually released, so I don't know if anything was changed in the version that was released, but the movie I saw was a great movie. And I rarely like vampire movies, so that's a bigger compliment than it sounds like on the surface. However if the scene with the rice was in the released version of the movie, I should note that that scene is the reason that I no longer eat rice.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture was one of the worst of the Star Trek movies, but it brought Star Trek back into mainstream, so it deserves to be repped for that. Plus, the music and special effects were pretty good.

Superman 2 is another one of my favorite superhero movies. Again, Christopher Reeve was amazing, plus I like the advancement of the relationship between Clark Kent and Lois Lane, and the final confrontation scene is great.

X-Men: The Wolverine is probably my least favorite of the X-Men movies, which is surprising because I'm a big Hugh Jackman fan, but this movie deserves + rep just for the fight scene on the train.

You're moving through this thing very quickly, but catching up with your last several sets, my favorites include The Shining, Seven, Wall-E, Independence Day and POTC: Curse of the Black Pearl.

I was a huge fan of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as a kid, both the movies and the cartoon. TMNT II: Secret of the Ooze is the first movie I ever watched in theaters. The sequel is still fun for nostalgic purposes, but Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is genuinely a good movie.

JCVD has always been my favorite action star, and I used to wear out my VHS copy of Universal Soldier (along with Hard Target, Bloodsport, Street Fighter and several others). I haven't seen it in forever, so I don't know how much I'd like it if I watched it today, but  for its inclusion.

If X-Men and Star Trek ever did a crossover film, I think you might die of excitement.

true, works the other way too. just bc it's the original doesn't mean it's inferior

often it is blatantly obvious sequels are rehashing and capitalizing off the success of the original, recycling the same jokes and gags, etc. but sometimes sequels are more enjoyable for me, i like Terminator 2 just a bit more than The Terminator for some reason, as an example

I, the Sequel God, didn't understand you putting it higher than the first film.

I very, very, VERY rarely question sequel love.

It's different from Miss Vicky and her (or maybe I should say "his" since Miss Vicky doesn't like women) -- "What's this SEQUELS OVER ORIGINALS INSANITY you've GOT GOING ON?!"

I have never and will never be like that.

If X-Men and Star Trek ever did a crossover film, I might actually pay $20 to see it in the theater instead of waiting for the DVD to come out. :)

BTW, yesterday was Jean-Claude Van Damme's birthday.

The Amazing Spider-Man is my favorite of the Spidey movies. I don't understand how anyone could have liked Tobey Maguire better than Andrew Garfield as Spidey. Tobey Maguire was too wimpy as Spidey.

I just watched X-Men: Days Of Future Past a few days ago, and I loved it.

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country is one of the best of the Star Trek movies. At one of the sci-fi cons, I heard that the reason that David Warner was in ST6 was because he was supposed to have a much larger role in ST5, but one of the actresses who was in most of his scenes was so bad that most of his footage ended up on the cutting room floor because of her. He was given a role in ST6 to make up for it.

I like the Pirate Of The Caribbean movies, but they all seem to blend together for me, so I'll have to watch them again, maybe as a marathon, to remember them better as individual movies in my mind.

Lethal Weapon is one of the few movie series where all of the movies are good. The third and fourth movies weren't as good as the first two, but they were still good movies. Mel Gibson and Danny Glover had great chemistry together, and Joe Pesci was a great addition in the sequels.

Raiders Of The Lost Ark is one of the greatest movies ever made. It's a throwback to the old movie serials that keep you glued to the edge of your seat.

For years, I thought I was the only person in the world who liked TRON. I thought the light cycles were so cool, and I even played the video game in the arcade.

gbgoodies
10-19-14, 04:18 PM
true, works the other way too. just bc it's the original doesn't mean it's inferior

often it is blatantly obvious sequels are rehashing and capitalizing off the success of the original, recycling the same jokes and gags, etc. but sometimes sequels are more enjoyable for me, i like Terminator 2 just a bit more than The Terminator for some reason, as an example

Terminator 2 was much better than the original The Terminator, and the first movie was great, so that just shows how good T2 is.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park was not as good as the original Jurassic Park, but it was still a good movie. I like Jeff Goldblum, but he just isn't as good as Sam Neill.

The Karate Kid was a great movie, and by far, the best of the Karate Kid movies.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is another great movie. How can you go wrong with both Harrison Ford and Sean Connery in the same movie?

For some reason, I'm not a big fan of most of the Batman movies. I didn't like Christian Bale as Batman, and I didn't care for most of the villains, with the obvious exception being Heath Ledger as The Joker.

Captain Spaulding

It'll probably be a long time before I share my own favorite movies list, but I've always figured I'd be the only person to include The Karate Kid and Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey.

The Karate Kid was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid. It was one of my favorite movies when I was a teenager. And it's one of my favorite movies now that I'm (legally) an adult. I consider it one of my top-five favorites and I've probably watched it more times than any other film. Even 30+ years after its release, you still hear people talking about "wax on, wax off," "sweep the leg," and the crane kick. I've seen people attend Halloween parties as a shower curtain. Every now and then I'll spot someone in a Cobra Kai t-shirt. No matter how many times I've seen the film, I always get pumped up during the tournament, especially when "You're the best ... arrrouounnddd" kicks in on the soundtrack. Elisabeth Shue was cute and adorable and the ultimate girl next door. Mr. Miyagi is one of the most memorable characters in movie history. I could go on and on and talk about how it made me want to take karate and turn household chores into karate-training sessions (paint the fence!), or how, as a teenager, I took solace in Daniel-son's situation and redemption when my mom and I also up and moved to a new town, but I'll save that for when I make my own favorites list . Major  for including it, though, as it's one of my most beloved films.

My love for Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey isn't quite as strong as my love for The Karate Kid, but it's pretty damn close. My mom and I would visit the local video store every Saturday afternoon. With three rentals, you got the 4th free. That included video games, so I'd always rent a Super Nintendo or Sega Genesis game, one or two movies for myself, and my mom would choose something for herself. Bogus Journey was always my fallback option if I couldn't find anything else I wanted to watch. There's no telling how many times I rented that movie, but it was a lot. I liked Excellent Adventure, too, but I loved the sequel. Movies that feature an affinity for rock-n-roll and include airhead characters have always appealed to me, even as a kid. It's like I knew I was going to be a future pothead even before I knew what pot was. Bill & Ted are perpetually stoned without actually having to get high. I love their misadventures, their camaraderie, their "whoa-ness." The Grim Reaper was hilarious, and now that I've gotten older and discovered The Seventh Seal, I actually understand what Bogus Journey is spoofing. And before I wizened up and stopped believing in such things, Bogus Journey's vision of Hell was how I imagined it to be, and I used to ponder what horrors might be awaiting behind my own hellish doors. The movie may not be laugh-out-loud funny, but I find it enormously entertaining and more fun than just about any other movie in existence. It'd place in my top 20.

As for some of your other recent choices, I like Die Hard, The Goonies and Batman Begins, but not as much as most people. POTC: The World's End was a convoluted mess, but I do enjoy Dead Man's Chest, despite its flaws. I watched all the Lethal Weapon movies earlier this year. I was impressed with the first one, which I think is easily one of the best buddy-cop movies I've ever seen (if not the best), but each new entry in the series was noticeably worse. Lethal Weapon 2 is still enjoyable, however, and certainly the second best in the series. The Expendables wasn't good, but it wasn't terrible. I thought that it took itself too seriously. That was remedied in the sequel, which was a lot of fun and featured some great action sequences and several funny one-liners. I thought Van Damme was great in it. If it were up to me, he would've kicked Sly's ass in the end. I don't have much interest in the third one, however, since it seems they've already exhausted the action hero canon and are relying too much on MMA fighters and nobodies.

for Captain Spaulding it's Jean Claude Van Damme movies

Damn straight.

I gave you + rep for TRON Legacy, but it's not really a great movie, it's only a good movie. But I'm glad it was made because it brought back the original TRON to DVD, which was a great thing, and TRON Legacy was an interesting update to the original movie.

The 1989 version of Batman, is not one of my favorite movies, but I gave you + rep for it because I think Michael Keaton was by far the best Batman. However I didn't really like the movie as a whole, and I thought it would have been a great movie if they got rid of all the scenes with Batman and the Joker. The Bruce Wayne character was the most interesting character in the movie.

Gremlins was a great movie. I still have little Gizmo and Stripe figures and dolls all over the house. :)

I think this is the first set that didn't have any of my favorite movies in it.

Alien, Aliens and Tremors are all good movies, but horror isn't my genre. I can appreciate them as good movies because they scared the heck out of me, but they're not the type of movies that I would ever want to watch again. (Although Tremors does have Reba McEntire in it, so that's a plus. :) )

I'm not a fan of either Batman Returns or The Dark Knights Rises, but TDKR is the better of the two movies, even though I hated Christian Bale as Batman.

Bit of a half and half mix so far today Rodent but mostly good. A few I'e not seen, not a fan of the 89 Batman, I'm still waiting to really 'get' The Big Lebowski, Temple of Doom is my least favourite Indy (ignoring of course that anything beyond the original trilogy actually exists! :D) and Young Guns isn't great but quite fun, mostly due to Estevez. I do however love Terminator 2, Dumb and Dumber, Repo Man, Batman Returns, Tremors and of course the Lord of the Rings trilogy. And Kick Ass is really quite close to the love category as well.

I actually didn't think much of The Big Lebowski the first time I saw it. It's grown on me to the point where now I think it's a great movie. It's just the kind of movie you can put on at any time and enjoy.

I don't love Terminator 2 as much as when I saw it the weekend it came out, but I still consider it an all time top 10 action movie.

Temple of Doom is great of course, but Raiders will always be my favorite of the series.

Dumb and Dumber is one of the best comedies ever and I'm looking forward to the sequel.

I actually don't think I've seen Young Guns.

I watched Kick-Ass for the comic book tourney and it ended up high on my list. That's a real fun movie.

The Dark Knight is awesome, but I think my least favorite of the trilogy, probably due to my dislike for Aaron Eckhart.

I've only seen the first Lord of the Rings so far and it was just ok for me. For the last few years I've had a very hard time getting into fantasies. It's to bad because I love the thought of them, and this was a very impressive movie.

I've never loved Repo Man, but it's cool and I like it.

Lawless was pretty awesome mostly because of Tom Hardy.

Not interested in Tron, partly because I didn't like the first one.

I like Batman, mostly due to Nicholson.

Gremlins is awesome.

Batman Returns is on my to see list.

The Dark Knight Rises is also my favorite of the trilogy.

Alien is awesome.

I like Tremors.

Aliens is neck and neck with Die Hard for my all time favorite action movie.

+rep for Gremlins.

Tim Burton's Batman is another movie I really liked when I was a kid, but my revisit as an adult was not so good. I didn't hate it, but I didn't much like it either and I'm a fan of much of Burton's other work. That said, I still much prefer Keaton as Batman over Bale.

Batman remains my favorite movie with the caped crusader. I'd much rather dance with the devil in the pale moonlight than watch Nolan's overrated trilogy.

I love The Lord of the Rings, Alien, Aliens, T2, and Tremors. Dumb and Dumber and Kick-Ass are also very enjoyable.

I'm still waiting to really 'get' The Big Lebowski

Keep me proud of my Scottish heritage and stop waiting. There is nothing to "get." It is the worst movie in the world. I recently ditched it from my movie collection (I had blind bought it after all the raving reviews I heard), which can now breathe again since it's not around.

Poltergeist and Ghostbusters are personal favorites of mine as well. I don't love Moon anywhere near as much as you do, but I do think it's one of the better science-fiction films to come in the last few years. Starship Troopers was much better than I expected it to be; beneath its dumb exterior, it's surprisingly smart. Jurassic Park is fun, but not a personal favorite.

I used to not care for Alien 3, but after a couple of more watches, thanks to pressure from Rodent and Slob around here, I like it a lot more. I do think it's very flawed, though. If it just had more energy and more OOOMPH! like Aliens -- more action -- it could have been really great. The story's a fitting end. I like its darkness.

Predator is boring.

RoboCop is great. I watched it with Rodent for a commentary for what was really my first time seeing it. I probably saw it as a little kid, but my memory of it was practically nothing. I now own it.

The Thing was "meh" when I saw it. Haven't seen Dredd.

Sexy Celebrity

What I don't like about that extended cut (at least, as long as it's the same thing I'm thinking of) --- you don't see the alien burst out of Ripley's chest when she plunges into the furnace to kill herself. I feel it's really lacking emotionally by not having the chestburster come out as she falls. The theatrical cut wins by featuring that part.
