This pilot definitely earns points for originality but loses in terms of oversell. We are being presented with an hour-long comedy drama that is part sitcom, part medical drama, part teen angst soap opera. The show takes place in a hospital that apparently specializes in seriously/terminal ill teenagers. The show is actually narrated by a character named Charlie, who is actually in a coma, who reminds us that he can hear everything that is going on but can't respond. His narration was one of the most entertaining and well-written elements of the show. Along the way, we meet a couple of cancer patients, a bitchy, Regina George-like cheerleader who needs a heart transplant, a sensitive girl with an eating disorder, a sensitive and caring doctor and a hard-nosed nurse. Oscar winner Octavia Spencer was fun as the nurse and Dave Annable is quietly charming as the doctor. This show has a lot going for it, perhaps too much and I think that's the problem...this show needs to have its cast trimmed down and should only be 30 minutes. These actors and characters aren't interesting enough to sustain an hour-long drama, but there is enough interesting stuff going on here for me to check out episode 2.

Watched episode 2 yesterday and found it to be slightly better than the pilot, but I still don't think this show has enough going on to sustain an hour long drama...it would be a great 30 minute show though.
