HALLOWEEN II

Directed by Rick Rosenthal
Released in 1981

Plot:
While Sheriff Brackett and Dr. Loomis hunt for Michael Myers, a traumatized Laurie is rushed to hospital, and the serial killer is not far behind her.

Why You Should Watch It:
It may not be a great movie, but this is classic October/Halloween material. This is one of the first Halloween movies I saw because it was always on cable TV around this time. I'd never see the first film on TV anywhere, but this always was.

The film continues on the same Halloween night as the first movie. The body count is bigger. This is a pure slasher film.

Michael Myers stalks a darkened hospital. Not many people are in it, for some reason, except those unfortunate souls he winds up slaughtering.

He's trying to find Laurie Strode, the girl who got away from him in the first movie. And there's a major secret about her that will be revealed. For Michael and Laurie have a connection to each other that nobody had known about.....

PRINCE OF DARKNESS

Directed by John Carpenter
Released in 1987

Plot:
A research team finds a mysterious cylinder in a deserted church. If opened, it could mean the end of the world.

Why You Should Watch It:
Well, I haven't watched it in years, but I wanna watch it again.

I avoided this movie because I thought it was actually really scary, unlike a lot of other stuff.

There's a guy who's covered in insects standing in the dark of night and he speaks in a gravelly, robotic-like voice warning the others that they should "pray for death" because what he has in store for them is much worse than death. Then his head falls off his body.

TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: THE NEXT GENERATION

Directed by Kim Henkel
Released in 1994

Plot:
A group of teenagers get into a car crash in the Texas woods on prom night, and then wander into an old farmhouse that is home to Leatherface and his insane family of cannibalistic psychopaths.

Why You Should Watch It:
Matthew McConaughey stars in it.

Like, he's ONE OF THE LEAD STARS.

The other one, believe it or not, is Renee Zellweger, but big deal.

Matthew McConaughey's in it. He plays a psycho member of Leatherface's family. He's got a f**ked up leg thing/mechanical leg brace.

Just watch it. Matthew McConaughey. Stupid movie, but Matthew McConaughey.

Also, Leatherface is more of a drag queen this time.

THE HUNGER

Directed by Tony Scott
Released in 1983

Plot:
Miriam, a centuries-old vampire, preys on urban clubgoers with her vampire lover John. When John suddenly ages and wastes away, Miriam casts her spell upon Sarah, a doctor who researches premature aging. This neo-Gothic exercise in style and atmosphere is perhaps most widely known for a lesbian sex scene involving Miriam and Sarah, played by Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon.

(written by Marty Cassady)

Why You Should Watch It:
Vampires.

And, according to IMDB plot author Marty Cassady, the lesbian sex scene.

LEPRECHAUN

Directed by Mark Jones
Released in 1993

Plot:
An evil, sadistic Leprechaun goes on a killing rampage in search of his beloved pot of gold.

Why You Should Watch It:
I repeat: An evil, sadistic Leprechaun goes on a killing rampage in search of his beloved pot of gold.

Also because it's the first of these movies and Jennifer Aniston is the star.

And because Warwick Davis is hysterical as the Leprechaun.

SCREAM 4

Directed by Wes Craven
Released in 2011

Plot:
Ten years have passed, and Sidney Prescott, who has put herself back together thanks in part to her writing, is visited by the Ghostface Killer.

Why You Should Watch It:
It's a decent movie that brings the '90s Scream generation into the 21st century. Good Halloween vibe to it. Not too heavy and yet not too weak, either. Good ending to it.

URBAN LEGEND

Directed by Jamie Blanks
Released in 1998

Plot:
A college student suspects a series of bizarre deaths are connected to certain urban legends.

Why You Should Watch It:
If you loved the Scream movies, I think you'll like this movie. It's a total Scream clone and a good one. Since it takes place at a college, it's sort of like Scream 2, Part 2. The faux Scream 3 we should have got.

Also, Jared Leto is in it, so the movie is even more profound now because of that.

Plot:
Chucky, the doll possessed by a serial killer, returns for revenge against Andy, the young boy that defeated him and has since become adult.

Why You Should Watch It:
Chucky goes on a rampage at a military school.

Also, if he succeeds on his new mission (watch and find out), Chucky will transfer his soul into the body of a black boy and Chucky is very excited about the idea of becoming black. "Chucky's gonna be a bro!"

Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning

Directed by Danny Steinmann
Released in 1985

Plot:
Still haunted by his gruesome past, Tommy Jarvis - the boy who killed Jason Voorhees - wonders if somehow he is connected to brutal slayings occurring in and around the secluded halfway house where he now lives.

Why You Should Watch It:
This movie is trashed as the worst Friday the 13th movie and it doesn't deserve that title at all. Swan will agree with me. At least, he did once. We did a commentary to this movie.

This is a funny and entertaining Jason movie -- although Jason's not really in it. That's why people don't like it. It's a copycat Jason on the loose. I say, hey -- at least they tried to do something different.

Jason isn't always the killer in the Friday the 13th movies -- in the first movie, it's his mother. In Jason Goes To Hell, it's Jason's spirit jumping between different bodies. They are a very creative lot over there at the Friday the 13th team when you think about it.

Also, I love the new blue stripes on Jason's hockey mask. Stylin'.

CRITTERS 3

Directed by Kristine Peterson
Released in 1991

Plot:
The tiny fur ball aliens that will eat anything or anyone set their sights on a Los Angeles apartment tower.

Why You Should Watch It:
Well, I need to watch it, actually. I've never seen it. But I'll be getting around to it eventually.

Why? Because Leonardo DiCaprio's in it. It's got to be great because of that.

I love Critters 2, but I never bothered seeing Critters 3. I did see Critters 4, where they went to outer space. I haven't even seen the first Critters, to be honest.

FUNNY MAN

Directed by Simon Sprackling
Released in 1994

Plot:
When Max Taylor wins the ancestral home of Callum Chance in a game of Poker, little does he realise that the game is far from over... One by one, Max's family are murdered by the Funny Man, a demonic jester with a varied and imaginative repertoire of homicidal techniques and an irreverent sense of humour. Meanwhile, Max's brother is on his way to the mansion with a bunch on hitchhikers who will be lucky to survive the night.

Why You Should Watch It:
Again -- another movie I actually haven't seen. I'm sorta now making a list of movies I need to remind myself to see soon.

It looks awesome. I remember reading about this movie in an old Fangoria magazine back in 1994, then I never heard about it again. Twenty years later, I remember it and I go looking for something about it and I finally found that it does indeed exist.

That's Christopher Lee as the murderous jester. I don't know if it's any good, but it looks like it is. I'm including it so you all will know about it, too.

WARLOCK

Directed by Steve Miner
Released in 1989

Plot:
A warlock flees from the 17th to the 20th century, with a witch-hunter in hot pursuit.

Why You Should Watch It:
Don't worry, I've seen this one.

It's a great movie about an evil, murderous warlock chasing after some people. Julian Sands is terrific as the villain. He's only in one Warlock sequel after this. There could have been a much bigger franchise with him, I feel.

WARLOCK: THE ARMAGEDDON

Directed by Anthony Hickox
Released in 1993

Plot:
The Son of Satan attempts to bring his father to Earth with the aid of some mystic stones.

Why You Should Watch It:
And here's the Warlock sequel with Julian Sands.

This is a really good movie, too. Directed by the guy who made Hellraiser III (like that matters with you people).

Super Nintendo actually released a Warlock video game around the time this movie came out. Unfortunately, I never played it.

THE WIZARD OF GORE

Directed by Herschell Gordon Lewis
Released in 1970

Plot:
A TV talk-show hostess and her boyfriend investigate a shady magician whom has the ability to hypnotize and control the thoughts of people in order to stage gory on-stage illusions using his powers of mind bending.

Why You Should Watch It:
I've never seen it, but why should that stop me from putting it on the list?

It looks like it would be good.

There's so many movies I need to see and probably never will.

MAKE A WISH

Directed by Sharon Ferranti
Released in 2002

Plot:
"Make A Wish" In the tradition of Friday the 13th and other classic horror films, Make A Wish tells the story of a group of women who get together once again for an annual birthday camping trip. The common denominator in this group of gay and straight girls is Susan: all of the campers are exes of hers. All except Andrea, who is Monica's new girlfriend, and not very pleased to be dragged along on this ridiculous outing. Linda, now straight, left her boyfriend Steve pouting at home, annoyed that she wanted to leave him for the weekend for a romp in the woods with the girls. Chloe, the aggressive vegetarian, and Dawn, whom Susan recently dumped, complete the group. Linda and Monica suspect that Susan's been cheating on Dawn, and they're surprised when Dawn opts to come on the trip in the first place. Before the rest of the group arrives, Susan has a run in with Steve, who shows up looking for Linda. Zeke, a rough-looking outdoorsman, convinces Steve with a little physical violence to leave Susan alone, but Steve doesn't go far. Also looking for someone is Detective C.K. McFarland # but for whom-or for what-is he looking? By the time the girls set up camp, tensions between Andrea and Susan are running high, and Linda has her eye on Monica, who doesn't mind looking back. Chloe is mad because there is no vegan food, and Dawn is performing healing rituals that look a lot like witchcraft. Michelle, the final camper, is supposed to be arriving any minute, but god knows she's always late. So when Chloe takes off on her bike to go to shopping,, nobody thinks much of it, And when Andrea disappears with the car, well, it's just because she's angry because Monica kissed Linda by the fire isn't it? But how come Chloe isn't back? And how come Michelle never showed up? And how come people keep disappearing?

Why You Should Watch It:
Well... if you can find it... it's a lesbian horror film. Lesbians go camping and they get killed one by one.

They're not hot lesbians, though.

THE SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE

Directed by Amy Holden Jones
Released in 1982

Plot:
An eighteen-year-old high school girl is left at home by her parents and she decides to have a slumber party. There is friction between some of the invited guests and the new girl, who is better at basketball than they, so the new girl decides to stay at home (which is conveniently across the street from the host's house). Meanwhile, a murderer of five people with a propensity for power tools has escaped and is at large, and eventually makes his way to the party, where the guests begin experiencing an attrition problem, with only the new girl to help them.

Why You Should Watch It:
It's one of my favorite films. Severely underrated horror film. Better than Halloween -- you can say I'm wrong as much as you want, but please die, especially if you're Honeykid.

Thinking Halloween is so great is something that just gets pumped into you by society. It's like religion. You have to break the chains if you wanna go Halloween atheist. It's a psychological battle that you must wage war against and defeat. It can take time, but you can get there. I did.

But it's not as great as people think it is and I'm not about to scream that it's better than Slumber Party Massacre when I really don't think it is.

Yes, there's some good stuff about Halloween, but better than Slumber Party Massacre? Hell no. Hell no is that weirdly desexed, mannequin, androgynous, hermaphrodite Jamie Lee Curtis and that neurotic Donald Pleasance a better watch than the girls of Slumber Party Massacre.

Michael Myers is a great villain, but Halloween is flawed. It's bland toast.

I think all that stuff that you find so great about Halloween is hokey.

Please. Halloween was revered (such as by that oaf, Roger Ebert, who gave it 4 stars) at a time when people like him were trashing every horror film that came out. Thus, Halloween struck an "easy" nerve with people and was praised because it wasn't a gore fest or a "women hating slaughter picture." Even though plenty of women died in it.

The movie is not creepy enough for me. It is just a dark bag of obnoxious music. I love Michael Myers and the whole Halloween phenomenon, but I do not feel anything truly all that special about the first movie, even though I used to. BUT, I've changed. I feel more honest about how I feel. A large part of Halloween love comes because it's highly acceptable to love it. It is highly praised and I think that in turns makes it easier for you to praise it as well. Meanwhile, Slumber Party Massacre isn't praised at all.

But you know what? I can't in all honestly look at both of these movies anymore and think that Halloween is the better movie. I would be joining the circus with you people praising it if I did.

Slumber Party Massacre.....

1. Has a better score in my opinion. Yes. I even love the music more than the Halloween music.

2. Has better characters, a better story and is far more creepier and scarier to me than Halloween. I can watch Slumber Party Massacre and still feel chills. I can't with Halloween. I am completely immune to Halloween's horror. I also think Halloween destroys itself with that opening where we see Michael Myers as a kid murdering his sister. I think that's stupid - showing the killer as a kid. At least we didn't see 6 year old Russ Thorn in Slumber Party Massacre.

And I could go on and on about the dreadful casting of Jamie Lee Curtis and the obnoxiousness that is the neurotic, crazy Dr. Loomis character.

I don't hate Halloween but I'm not gonna sit around and think it's so fabulous anymore. I would rather watch 1981's Halloween II.

CANDYMAN

Directed by Bernard Rose
Released in 1992

Plot:
The Candyman, a murderous soul with a hook for a hand, is accidentally summoned to reality by a skeptic grad student researching the monster's myth.

Why You Should Watch It:
I love this movie and I haven't seen it in a few years. I no longer own it and I need to get it again. To me, this is one of the best horror movies ever. WAY better than Halloween. The sequels suck (well, Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh was OK), but the first film is spectacular. I had this movie on my '90s list and Sexy Hitler is pretty pissed off that it didn't make it.

HALLOWEEN 4: THE RETURN OF MICHAEL MYERS

Directed by Dwight H. Little
Released in 1988

Plot:
Ten years after his original massacre, the invalid Michael Myers awakens and returns to Haddonfield to kill his seven-year-old niece on Halloween. Can Dr. Loomis stop him?

Why You Should Watch It:
Well, I recently did. Enjoyed it, but I still say Halloween 5 is better. So is the first Halloween movie, as well. But since I recently rewatched it, I'm gonna put it up here on this list. It is also the direct sequel to Halloween II, which I put on this list, because Halloween III has nothing to do with Michael Myers.

Released in 2014

Plot:
A mysterious virus hits an isolated elementary school, transforming the kids into a feral swarm of mass savages. An unlikely hero must lead a motley band of teachers in the fight of their lives.

Why You Should Watch It:
Again, another movie I haven't seen yet and I don't think a lot of people have. I don't even think it's been released yet! But I just learned about it and I love the poster and the title along with it. Elijah Wood and Rainn Wilson are the stars. It's a horror comedy. It looks promising? Maybe.
