There are already a few threads covering the same topic - this one (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=16081&highlight=bands) being the most recent one.

That being said, here's a quick list...

1. Pink Floyd
2. Swans
3. Rush
4. Talking Heads
5. David Bowie
6. Neil Young
7. Miles Davis
8. Queen
9. The Velvet Underground
10. The Replacements

In no particular order:

Judas Priest
Iron Maiden
Helloween
Slayer
Kreator
Running Wild
Black Sabbath
Blind Guardian
Iron Savior
Kamelot

At least these are the top 10 bands/artists that I have listened to the most. Read my top 100 albums thread for an overview of my favorite albums. Interestingly, all these 10 bands come from only 3 countries: 5 hail from Germany, 3 Hail from England and 2 from the US. Although I am Brazilian I do not like Brazilian music in particular and the main Brazilian metal bands do not appeal to me particularly (Angra and Sepultura are the two most famous ones, really great bands whose music did not seduce me with the exception of Angra's first album, Angel's Cry).

Pink Floyd is so booooooring. Though you have to smoke pot to fully enjoy it I guess.

Don't smoke pot. Don't find Pink Floyd boring.

Here's a top five, after that it gets pretty muddled and dependent on my mood.

1. Tom Petty
2. Lindsey Buckingham
3. Eric Clapton
4. Bob Seger
5. Warren Zevon

Do you mean you don't smoke pot and you don't find PF boring? I find boring anything that's not metal, since PF is not metal I find it boring. My music tastes are as diverse as the colours of the antartic landscape:

Yes, I don't smoke pot and don't find Pink Floyd.

I have figured that out about you, Guapo my friend.

A nice question would be to ask what are your favorite bands not hailing from English speaking countries?

My favorite metal bands not from English speaking countries all sing in English but that's perhaps because metal is nearly always sung in English because it's lyrics are just to silly to be sand in your natural language, such as this Helloween's song:

"A Tale That Wasn't Right"

Here I stand all alone
Have my mind turned to stone
Have my heart filled up with ice
To avoid it's breakin' twice

Thank to you, my dear old friend
But you can't help, this is the end
Of a tale that wasn't right
I won't have no sleep tonight

[Chorus]
In my heart, in my soul
I really hate to pay this toll
Should be strong, young and bold
But the only thing I feel is pain

It's alright, we'll stay friends
Trustin' in my confidence
And let's say it's just alright
You won't sleep alone tonight

[Chorus]

[Solo]
[Mike]

With my heart, with my soul
Some guys cry you bought and sold
They've been strong, young and bold
And they say, play this song again"

Top 10 fav. bands not from English speaking countries:

Helloween (Germany)
Running Wild (Germany)
Accept (Germany)
Kreator (Germany)
Blind Guardian (Germany)
Iron Savior (Germany)
Heavenly (France)
Sodom (Germany)
Hybria (Brazil)
Bathory (Sweden)

However, you also should note that other people's top 10 bands lists also are not the most diverse mix, they are usually top 10 rock bands lists. Metal is a musical field that originated from rock but developed into it's own musical field developing a great diversity in subgenres. If you want melodic metal with complex melodies you can listen to Symphony X, if you want melodic metal with enough cheese to supply the population of Congo with calcium you can listen to Heavenly, if you want enough heaviness to kill children and small animals you can listen to some Dark Angel, if you want the sound of pure evil you can listen to some early Bathory, if you want straight rock played with some extra heaviness and musical virtuosity you can listen to early Iron Maiden. Overall, metal is as diverse as rock, pop or other large international music genres.

I guess a truly eclectic top 10 would be something like:

Mahler
Tupac Shakur
Mayhem
Rush
Vivaldi
Helloween
Haydn
some Indian artist
some Chinese artist
some Jazz dude

I'm not sure if classical composers can really be counted in the same vein as actual performers, though. If they lived and died before the invention of audio recording then nobody that's alive today has ever actually heard them perform, only modern orchestras doing renditions of their work.

I'm a U.S. citizen, but except for The Doors and Steely Dan, my favorite bands are from UK, mostly England.

There is some real heavy Pink Floyd stuff. Can't just listen to the hits, but Dark Side to The Wall is great.

I first loved Pink Floyd before I ever smoked pot.

Running Wild is awesome Guap.

I can never really put my top 10 in order because it fluctuates daily as to which of the ten is my favourite of that day, anyway. Also, I can't pick 10 so I'm gonna pick the only three genre's of music I listen to, and pick 10 from each.

I couldn't even list mine. There are so many bands that I love certain works of but hate others, like Alexisonfire and Thrice. Others are just too hard to compare with each other. I love Screamo bands like Orchid, Saetea, Circle Takes the Square, Anomie, Totoro, Pg.99, Tristan Tzara, Loiuse Cypher, and Emo bands like The Birds Are Spies They Report to the Trees, Gospel, Cap'n Jazz, and Black Metal bands like Raspberry Bulbs, Bone Awl, Black Murder, Furdidurke, and Deathspell Omeaga... And so many others, Aspid, Death, Morbid Angel (old), Beherit (old), and countless others...

How can I pick ten?

I guess I'll give this a shot as well...

This is judged based on how much I like the band's discography. My top favorite albums would look a bit different since there are bands where I absolutely love one album but am not too crazy about anything else they did.

1. Hatebreed
2. Breaking Benjamin
3. Enter Shikari
4. A Day To Remember
5. I See Stars
6. Thirty Seconds To Mars
7. Underoath
8. Slipknot

You like Underoath that much False Writer? I saw them live twice, and they were very good. I like their older material more, but they are a great band throughout their timespan. I saw them live with Norma Jean. It was a great show.

The greatest live performance I ever saw was without a doubt Alexisonfie in 2003. They set the par for exellence and nothing else has come close since. Their energy was unmatched. Their loyalty to their fans was humbling. It was a gift to witness it, like something not of this wretched Earth.

One of the best show I've ever been too was Against Me! back in 05/06. It was in a dirty, small, smokey, poorly lit basement venue called the underground. The place was full to capacity, so like 150 or so people, packed wall to wall, the whole place is circle pits and crowd surfing for a solid hour and 25 minutes. I was in paradise.

Yeah after I posted it I wasn't sure if I should've put them a little lower, but yeah I think they have a very impressive track record. Their first 2 albums are awesome due to their heaviness, The Changing of Times was a good transition record that had hints of their old stuff mixed into what they were gonna be in the future. TOCS and DTGL are my favorites, mainly because that's when I discovered them when I saw the music video for Reinventing Your Exit on TV. To be honest though I never really listened to anything after DTGL in full. I kinda got out of them by then, and even though I still listen to their old stuff I never bothered checking their later stuff out.

I never got to see them live, but it is cool that they're back together again. Maybe I'll get the chance sometime soon!

I haven't been to too many live shows, that's what sucks about being in a nowhere place. I would say my favorite live performance was Enter Shikari on Warped Tour 2014 though, they were amazing to finally see live.

Pink Floyd is my favorite group ever! I saw Roger 3 times, want to see Gilmour this year! Big meetup from another forum, our last one was in Toronto.

Wasn't expecting Supertramp - I think they are the most underrated band (no tabloids, no drama, substance abuse, cheating, violence, hotel trashing.. just the music, even some of my favorite bands got attention from gossip and trivial crap).

One of my favorite bands. From their first album "Words Unspoken" is a real gem, Crime of the Century, Crisis? What Criis? - a very, very underrated album. Up until "Famous Last Words". I saw Roger Hodgson 3 times, his voice is better than ever, and his band is great. I usually don't like 99% of drummers, but the guy is pretty good. Good piano player, plays "Child of Vision" a bit different - Rick played his best piano solos on Roger's songs, and Roger's best guitar solos are on Rick's best.... Rick is very sick... :(
