Do season finales ever ruin a show for you? When LOST tied things up (barely), my girlfriend turned to me and said she HATED it and that it ruins the entire show for her. I thought that was pretty far fetched...until I watch the final episode of How I Met Your Mother today and I fully understand how she feels.

Investing years into a show, to only have the carpet pulled out from under you with a 2 minute scene that ruins EVERYTHING is quite heartbreaking. I HATED the final for How I Met Your Mother and would rank it up there with Dexter's finale, as one of the worst finales of all-time.

So, has a finale ever ruined the entire show for you? What are some of your favourites, or ones you absolutely hated?

Are you asking about season finales or series finales?

Season finales annoy me because they usually end in cliffhangers, and I have to wait until the following year to find out what happens.

Series finales usually tie up all the loose ends, sometimes nicely, sometimes, not so nicely.

I don't really remember the series finale for Dexter. But HIMYM was bad, but then, I thought most of the final season was really poor. I didn't get into the programme until quite late and I still don't think I've seen all the episodes, but I could've dropped it long before it finished. I can understand what you mean, though. Even though I couldn't care less about how they met, I thought it was a horrible ending.

I can't think of a series finale that ruined a whole series, though. I didn't like the end of Buffy, but then season 7 is probably the worst season anyway, for me. That or six. So it'd been downhill for a while.

Have you guys seen the alternate ending of HIMYM? So much better.

I've not, but it can't have been worse.

I've seen about 12 episodes of How I Met Your Mother. It never clicked with me but I always want to know who the hell the mother ended up being but forget to look it up.

The finale that ruined a show for me was The Dinosaurs.

It ends with you watching them freeze to death. You don't see them actually die, but you know they are about to.

It's such a harsh ending for what was essentially a children's show. I couldn't watch it anymore without thinking about the ending and it ends up being depressing and not funny.

Think that's harsh? This is what we were shown in the mid 70's. This was midday children's tv. I can't find it on its own, but this is it as part of another programme.

You really think that? I thought it was great!

Dexter on the other hand, was ****ing laughable...

One of the best, and worst, series finales ever was the series finale of "Quantum Leap".

It was great because it brought back a lot of the characters who had been on previous episodes, and wrapped them up in a great story, maybe even the best episode of the whole series.

But it was the worst because:

At the very end of the episode, these words came on screen. "Dr. Sam Beckett never returned home . . ."

:(

As another poster mentioned, I think you're talking about series finales and not season finales and I totally agree with you that the series finale of How I Met Your Mother sucked.

I lost interest in Dexter, but I liked endings of True Detective, Breaking Bad and The Sopranos

My mistake. Yes I meant series. Moderators, come out and change the title please!!! :p

I guess my hatred for the finale clouded my mind.

I think it's even worse when a TV show is cancelled between seasons, and we end up with a cliffhanger that is never resolved. :frustrated:

I have never had a series finale ruin anything for me. There a lot that are forgettable, but with them I just remember the stuff I loved about the show. Breaking Bad, The Shiel, and The Sopranos all had great endings for me. So curious about how Mad Men will end.

One that springs to mind for me and I pushed into the back of my mind was Dawsons Creek. I was a die hard fan of that show, I still am the ending was just so weak and felt like such a cop out, to go from such an emotional ending and the start of a wonderful relationship to something that was meant to be a pay off but was anything but left me with a bitter taste in my mouth.

Despite the fact that Friends needed to go for so many years in my honest opinion I thought the ending was quite satisfying, it really felt that you were loosing people in your life and the way it was structured was well done.

I also enjoyed the ending to Gilmore Girls, it is not the ending I would have gone for but none the less it was not terrible.

Some people really disliked the ending of Seinfeld, I didn't mind it personally but some people I have met on forums think it was just OTT and border line stupid.

Personally, I loved the series finale of Seinfeld because it beautifully addressed the kind of selfish, self-absorbed, and arrogant people Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer were.

Breaking Bad finale was one of the best endings to a series. Breaking Bad is one of the great shows that has been made. The ending to Alias I liked, 'Immortal Sloane'.

Dexter had so much potential during the first few series but towards the time of 'Lumin' that is when I started to loose interest and the ending was just utter garbage, very disappointing. Plus it didnt help the show as I was watching the end of Dexter at the same time as Breaking Bad.

Battlestar Galactica (reboot) - The best sci-fi show ever made after Star Trek. The scene when Laura Roslin dies made me cry, and as all the storylines unfolded with Starbuck disappearing and Gaius Baltar back on earth with the Cylon. The crew finally find somewhere to settle after their long journey.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - After some the best space battle scenes in the history of TV sci-fi, the war with the dominion ends with victory for the federation - and as a condition of them helping the federation and stopping Jem'Hadar reinforcements coming through the wormhole - Captain Sisko has to join the profits in the celestial temple. The crew say their farewells on the holodeck in Vic Fontaine's club. Then the final scene with Kira and Jake Sicko looking out of the promenade windows at the wormhole, as the camera slowly pans back and the theme tune plays slowly in the background. Great ending.

The problem with How I Met your Mother wasn't just the finale... The problem were the last 4 seasons... The finale was just another mistake in a series that should have lasted half the time that it did!

The ending of True Detective was weak.

In what sense? If you're referring to the ending, then I'm not sure, but if what you mean is the final episode, then I would say I agree. The episode left me underwhelmed as I thought it had pacing issues, and it wasn't as taut as I had hoped it would be

I agree with you regarding How I Met Your Mother...I tried to get into it, but most of the time I found it smug and confusing and around season 4 stopped caring about who the mother is and when Neil Patrick Harris wasn't onscreen, I really didn't care what was going on.

I still have trouble understanding why anyone would care who the mother was. It's the line for the series, but it's not important and doesn't affect the programme or the humour in the slightest

I tried watching the first season of How I Met Your Mother, but I just couldn't get into the show. I was curious about who the mother was, so as soon as they announced that it was the last season, I started watching the show again.

So basically, I only watched the first season and the last season, and I still knew enough about the show to understand why everyone was so upset with the ending of the show.

No, he's right.

I didn't care much for the last episode of Friends, either. But then, it was the end of a poor season that was only made because the network begged them to make one more season. Plus, y'know, Ross & Rachel.

I don't know if there are any finales that ruined a show but I agree that the How I Met Your Mother finale was just dreadful!

I don't know if I'd say it ruined the show but I don't think I've ever been so p*ssed off by any episode as much as that one. That they just threw so many important developments at you within the space of seconds felt so rushed and cheap. And most of them seemed so stupid. So you dedicated the whole final season to the wedding of Barney and Robin just to split them up, resetting all of Barney's character growth in the process? You spent 9!!! seasons teasing us about the mother, introduced her and tried your best to make us love her, then finally have her meet Ted just to kill her in such throwaway fashion? You spent the finale showing that life can be tough and that it doesn't always work out the way you hope just to shove a cheesy, fairytale ending down our throats?

Apparently the show's creators filmed the final scene with the kids all the way back in 2006 I think it was. And it feels like they desperately tried to force the story to match that original ending instead of just changing it. The characters of Robin, Barney and Ted had developed over all those years to the point where Barney was ready to be a one-woman guy, where Robin was ready for commitment and where Ted was ready to move on from Robin. And then they just threw all the development out the window!

Hated it! :furiousdevil: :furiousdevil: :furiousdevil:

Now I need to go and cool down a bit. :p

I'd have to agree with your girlfriend. Lost was one of the most fascinating shows id ever seen. It was interesting from the get go and had so many great cliffhangers. Series to series tho it got weaker, and felt like they where just throwing any old crap in, I felt like they where making things up episode to episode and then threw a stupid ending at us. I really feel the creators lost there way with it.
