A refreshing change from modern Hollywood thrillers.
Just about every review I've read has said that people hoping for another "Taken-esque" movie will be dissapointed when they see Walk Among the Tombstones. I'm just going to reiterate this, because this film is almost nothing like Taken (apart from the kidnapping and the threatening phone calls). This is in no way "action packed". If you're looking for an action film, don't see this. Now that I've said it we can move on with the review.
The story in this film is slow moving, but not boring. This is a very carefully paced film. You learn things bit by bit throughout the movie, meeting strange and unsavory characters throughout. The setting is perfect in this film. A dark and dirty city full of criminals, AND it's at the turn of the century (1999) which is not a typical time setting for modern thrillers today. I really loved the way the city created atmosphere and maintained the dark subject matter. Speaking of dark subject matter, I am warning anyone that wants to see this that this film is very dark and disturbing, but it works. It doesn't feel out of place at all. It really helps the film seem more realistic. Let's move on to acting.
Most of the acting is good from the people in the supporting roles. I wouldn't say great acting all around, but it's good enough to enjoy the movie.
Liam Neeson is actually very good in this. He keeps his calm demeanor for most of the movie, and it works too. While Liam Neeson doesn't show much obvious emotion, you still care for him. He does a lot of acting with his face, showing subtle emotion very well. There's also a young kid in the movie who does a decent job. He isn't great, but he does a good job and I think that he could become a good actor later on. But since he is young, you can accept some not-so-great acting, and it's not that noticeable either.
The camerawork is very good in this. I was pleasantly surprised. The lighting is perfect for just about every scene and it really helps maintain the darkness of the story. Framing and camera movements are good too. Camerawork alone is a huge plus for this movie.
I did have a few problems with the movie though. Sometimes the story was a bit complicated and confusing, but by the end of the movie I understood and got what it was trying to say. There are some of your typical cliches for a movie like this, like the villains are kind of your stereotypical movie bad guys, and some other little things. The story isn't totally original either but it has enough unique things in it to keep you interested and involved.
Overall I really liked A Walk Among the Tombstones. This movie doesn't really do anything that new or original, but it's more original than most recent American thrillers. It has it's share of cliches and predictable moments, but there's not that many of them so it's easy to overlook them. The main reason I like this movie is because in a way it's an old-fashioned thriller. There are no explosions, and the story moves slowly without much action, and it STILL keeps you interested. This proves that you don't have to have constant action to make an involving and good thriller. If you want to see a good thriller that will keep you interested without giving you a headache from constant loud noises, go see this film. I really enjoyed it and it is a refreshing turn from most modern thrillers today.
