The MoFo Map.
Using an online pin map, we can see the locations of MoFos.

The Map can be found here (https://www.zeemaps.com/map?group=1114029) on ZeeMaps... each entry is a simple pin, just click it and it'll open the box to see which MoFo it is. Simple.

Now, please do not put postal codes, street names, full addresses or any sensitive details.
Even my own entry on the Map is a few miles off location to avoid anything too intimate.

If you want to be added, just go to the top of the map, additions, "Add Marker - Simple" and away you go.

You can move the marker as well by clicking the arrow at the bottom right of the pop-up box on your map-pin.

Top of map, additions, "Add Marker - Simple" and away you go.

I guess I didn't need to join up then. Oh well. The Map itself is "owned" by "The Rodent" anyway so all is good.

I can see my marker when I click on the map, but I can't add my avatar. It doesn't seem to have any option to edit it.

The Rodent

Bring up the pop-up box on your pin and the tab called Media.

You can add either from your computer or a URL and then click Submit. Just like adding an avatar on MoFo. It takes a minute or two for the image to appear in the pop-up box.

I brought up the pop-up box, but there's no "Media" option. The only options are Zoom, Print, Close, or To and From Directions.

I tried it in both Firefox and Chrome.
Maybe it won't let me edit the pin because I didn't add it?

Aluminum (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/aluminum)

Um, it's a walkway on the side of the street, ergo sidewalk. Makes perfect f*cking sense.

Weirdo.

The Rodent
09-12-14, 12:15 PM
That is true, Slob.

"English" as in "Anglo" (the French still call it L'Angleterre meaning Anglo Terrain).

The Anglo Saxons were from Northern Germany and Southern Denmark. To be truly English, means you're actually German.
The usage of surnames by the Angles was also introduced by the French for taxation purposes when they conquered this little island of ours... so they could track more precisely who had or hadn't paid their tax. Before that, the Angles didn't use surnames.

The Sci-Fi Slob
09-12-14, 12:16 PM

I will drop this whole American English thing after just one minor criticism. It's another pronunciation thing again, and it's how Americans pronounce English county names that end in "shire". Americans pronounce it exactly how it is spelt . For example, English people pronounce it: Derby'SHUR' or depending on the accent Derby'SHA'. It's goes through me when I hear Americans on TV shows pronounce it like that. That's it, rant over. Beer time! :)

Brummy is Birmingham.

To be a Brummy, you have to come from Birmingham. To have a Brummy accent, means you have that localised accent.

It's very down sounding, miserable sounding almost. Not trying to sound like I'm taking the p*ss, it's genuinely how it sounds.

They add syllables to words too.

Gold is pronounced "Gahwuld"
Soap is pronounced "Sahwup"

Things like that.

To give an idea of the diversity of British accents:
Wolverhampton, which is in the same area as Brum, have completely different mannerisms to the accent. Same sound almost... but Wolverhampton's people are often referred to as Yam-Yams. Yam-Yams hate being called Yam-Yams though.
They say things like "'Ow am ya?" which means "How are you?"

"Where are you from?"
"Brum"

The U in Brum is an "Oo" sound. Not like Broom, almost like Brawm. Don't accentuate the "aw", shorten it. Brawm.

The swear word F**k... fook. That kind of sounding U. Brum. Brawm.

Yeah... things is, you go from Dudley, to Wolves, to Brum, to West Brom... they're cities all within a tiny area... and the accent does sound similar, but when you study them, they actually completely different.

Bridgnorth and Telford have variants of the accent too. It's the Midlands twang though. The kind of accent you can hear through a wall.

I don't have it though. I was born here, but I lived in Scotland for years and going from Midlands to Scottish accents then moving back down here I ended up with a neutral accent.

Not sure if this is a British thing, but you're right that the accents vary so much within tiny areas of all over the country. You think of how many accents you'll hear if you walked from my home town of Liverpool to Manchester, a distance of 30 miles. You'd hear very strong and very different accents from Scouse, through Woollyback, Lancashire, to Manc and lots of variations in between!

In terms of America, I think New York is a good comparison.

Though New York is a billion squillion times larger than say, Brum, Wolves, Dudley and West Brom, you can go from Queens to Brooklyn to Bronx and the accents change radically.

Here's an interesting fact.

West Bromwich (aka; West Brom)... Birmingham was originally called Browmicham in olde Saxon English... West Bromwich was so called as it is the west end of that area.

So the name Brum, Brummy etc comes from that.
Brom, short for Bromwicham.

Exactly. But not only that, Sane, is English speaking, from Australia, but it is a country which is very far from US and Europe, hence less influenced by their cultural sphere and more easily influenced by Asia, which is relatively closer. He/she also watches more Asian movies in general.

I also think that Brazil's distance from Europe and the US made the country relatively more open to Asian pop culture. Fact is that when I was growing up Brazilian kids TV was 2/3 Japanese TV series (animated and live action) and significant amounts of Jap movies (like all Godzilla movies dubbed in Portuguese :D). I think that partly explains my fascination with Japanese pop culture.

For every sociological model there is the exception. My point was that the proportion of people from continental Europe who watches, let's say, more than 30% of their movies/TV non-English European films, is higher than in the US or UK. Of course, the US is a huge country with a huge middle class and there are people in the US who are fans of virtually anything, a Argentinian friend when to live in a small town in Wisconsin for a year and he found a hardcore Boca Juniors fan there!

A difference of nearly 5 times. Notice that the proportion of the UK population who has access to the internet is slightly higher than in the US, same applies to Canada.

Canada has the highest proportion of the pop in the internet (93%) because they have the worst climate, it's super cold, "thunder" cold. Canadians are also overepresented here compared to Americans (4 to 18, ratio of 4.5, while ratio of users is over 8).

Don't even joke about the European thing. We aren't Europe.
The US is closer to Russia than we are to Europe, so saying we are Europe is like saying Americans are all Communistic Ruskies.

We use the Pound and hardly any British people speak another language.
I'd hazard a guess that 80%-90% of white British are English speaking only.
I learned French at school, but unlearned it within a week of leaving school... most white British are the same.

As for climate.
Yeah we have a dreary climate 75% of the time, but living here for 1500 years or so our people are used to it.
Sure if you were born and bred in the Australian outback and moved here to the UK in your 40s, you probably would stay indoors most of the time.

I lived in the north of Scotland for years. Up there it approaches the kind of weather seen at the poles and we still had to walk to catch a bus to school.
Worst winter I remember was in December 1994, the snow reached 12 feet. Still had to go to school though. By bus.

Strait of Dover is 33 km.

Bering Strait is 82 km.

Nope.

Just nope.

The US owns a few small islands, as does Russia... the closest point is 2 miles. The US has soil that is 2 miles from Russian soil.

Okay, let's get something straight here. There are 7 continents. North America, South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, and Antarctica.

So if the UK isn't part of Europe, then which continent is it part of? I'm sure some people would love to think the UK is it's own continent, but sadly it is not.

The Rodent
04-09-15, 04:27 AM
The UK is an island.

Zotis

The UK is more than one Island. Nice try, but that doesn't even answer the question in the first place.

Zotis

Alright, I think I found a clue...

From merriam-webster.com, the definition of continent includes, "one of the great divisions of land (such as North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, or Antarctica) of the Earth

the Continent : the countries of Europe except for Great Britain and Ireland"

Hmm... I was under the impression that every country had to be attached to a continent. But this seems to imply that islands simply are not part of any continent...

The Rodent

You guys are talking in technical terms. Under the Channel the landmasses are connected.

But 99% of the British hate the fact we are often called Europe. Politically, we hate them. We even have several Parties that are calling for the UK to leave the EU.

Over the centuries we've knocked the spit out them in countless wars.
The Scots were the only people who successfully held off the Romans. Held them off so well and scared the Romans so bad in fact, that Hadrian's Wall was built by the Romans to keep the Scots out :D

I have yet to meet a Brit who says we are "part of Europe".
This is f*cking Britain, and I don't often swear on MoFo, but Europe can f*ck right off.

You don't need a passport to go from France to Germany etc.

You need a passport to go from Canada to the U.S. I guess that means Canada isn't part of North America?

The Rodent
04-09-15, 04:44 AM
It's part of North America... but not part of the USA.

Canada and USA are different countries that share a land border and are on the same landmass.

The UK is an island, separated by nearly 30 miles of water at the closest point (which is getting larger by the way because the UK is still moving away from Europe).

On Climate:

Average precipitation:

UK --- 854.8 mm
US --- 742.44 mm

UK has more precipitation than in the US. It's true that thanks to the Atlantic currents the winter in the UK is much milder than in the US (specially in the north of the midwest), but overall the UK is not very warm. My friend from Northern England said that it's always around 0 celsius to 10 celsius, which might not be ideal for outdoor activities.

I believe climatic reasons help to explain why the industrial revolution happened in the UK. Since it's the ideal climate for indoor work. Only with the invention of the air conditioner the industrial revolution spread through tropical climates. :D

You haven't witnessed a night out whatever time of year in Northern England! I've worn more clothes on the beach than those youngsters wear on a freezing cold night :D

Interesting idea about the industrial revolution but the UK became the front runner of the industrial revolution as it was already a rich merchant country with a burgeoning commercial textile industry ripe for being mechanised. It had the money, the clusters of urban population as well as a great interest in science and engineering.

I don't think you can compare rainfall in the UK with the whole of the land mass of the US with all its different regional climates . The whole of the UK is only the size of the state of Alabama .

We are a European country. We need a passport to get into and out of Europe as we have opted out of the Schengen Agreement which allows free movement between European countries. We wanted authority over our own border being an island whereas the rest of Europe wanted to make it easier to pass through borders as they were adjoined anyway. The Republic of Ireland has also opted out as they wanted to keep the free movement arrangement with the UK.

Rodent is not a fan of the idea of being European, but you can't get away from the fact that geographically we are part of the European continent.

If the UK is not Europe, then Madagascar is not Africa and Ceylon is not Asia.

The Rodent
04-09-15, 09:50 AM
^^ Madagascar is attached to the African continent today, but was part of the Asian continent.
Madagascar was once connected to India, and is also in the Indian Ocean... which are both part of Asia.

It was also owned by the French up until 1960. Which is Europe.

In turn all continents were connected at some point in the past. There's been 15 Supercontinents over the squillions of years: Ur, Vaalbara, Kenorland, Paleopangea, Columbia, Rodinia, Pannotia, Superia, Sclavia, Nuna, Laurentia, Baltica, Siberia, Gondwana and the most recent called Pangaea.

It's all swings and roundabouts but I will never, ever, class Britain as Europe.

Often? UK is part of Europe. It's like denying that Cuba is part of the Americas.

Over the centuries we've knocked the spit out them in countless wars.

As happened to all major European countries. Germany alone killed far more other Europeans in WW2 than the UK did in all of it's history.

The Scots were the only people who successfully held off the Romans.

No they were not the only ones, Germans and Parthians along with the tribes of Ethiopia also shared a border with Rome for many centuries. However, Rome did not annex these territories, including Scotland, because they were regarded as too poor and barbaric to be worth conquering. In fact, England was conquered due to a public promotion project by Claudius, since it was also considered not worth conquering but Claudius wanted popularity so conquering new lands, even useless ones, was a political tool.

I have yet to meet a Brit who says we are "part of Europe". This is f*cking Britain, and I don't often swear on MoFo, but Europe can f*ck right off.

I've never been to Canada. So, I can't speak from experience. I heard once, though, that it is better to have a passport because it makes the crossing easier. At least I think that is what was said. But you do need proof of your citizenship, right? Say, an ID or something like that?

I've added myself, by the way. :)

The only thing that I had with me was normal stuff like my driver's license and credit cards, but they never asked for anything. They basically just stopped us at the border and asked a few questions like why we were going to Canada, how long we were planning to stay, etc.

I guess they just know how to read people, and if they don't like your answers, or if they think that you're lying, they probably pull you over and ask for your ID.

You may want to double-check and make sure that nothing's changed in recent years. I think I was there before 9/11, so they may have changed the requirements for obvious reasons. I know that they've changed all kinds of requirements for airline travel, but I don't know what they've done about people who drive their own vehicles across the border.

I just did a quick Google search, and it looks like the laws changed in 2009.

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g153339-s602/Canada:Crossing.The.Border.html

"US citizens can no longer cross the border, back into the US, from Canada, using only a driver's licence and birth certificate. Due to changes in U.S. law that took effect June 1, 2009, there are more strict requirements for what identification is required; see the table below for a list of acceptable documents."
