With 12 people everyone gets 10 nominations and 8 people get 11. Just go ahead and do your 10 for now and if one more person pops in and says they want to join they can have the remaining eight nominations. If no one does then we will figure that out later.

I'm not starting this until Sunday (possible Sat.) but I want everyone to get their nominations in and everything ironed out before this weekend so we don't get off to a late start.

If your wondering if a song is Folk or not, these links will help you:

List of Folk Singers (http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_folk_musicians)

Article on Folk Music (http://www.cs.rpi.edu/~haydent/folk/folk.html)

Or you can look it up on Wiki or ask in this thread for our opinion.

You can post your nominations when your ready. :) Try to have them in by Friday.

Miss Vicky

I'll get mine in when I get home. Probably in an hour or so. I'll have to figure out a couple of more since I only picked 8 so far.

Cricket's list is really Rock/Pop or Folk Rock as is a few of gbgoodies' but I think that's going to be par for the course. Once you electrify or have more than 3 or 4 chords to a song you start moving away from what's considered Folk IMHO.

That's why I posted my list before taking the time to find the links. I looked at a whole bunch of lists of folk music, and picked the songs that I like from those lists, so all of my songs came from folk music lists online. But I want to make sure that they're okayed here as well.

Once I know that all the songs are okayed, I'll add the links.

I'm not too familiar with Folk music, so I looked up some songs on some folk web sites. Are these songs okay?
If yes, I'll add the links ASAP.

City of New Orleans - Steve Goodman
Puff The Magic Dragon - Peter, Paul and Mary
Teach Your Children - Crosby, Stills Nash & Young
Can The Circle Be Unbroken - Carter Family
Turn, Turn, Turn - The Byrds (Pete Seeger)
Alice’s Restaurant - Arlo Guthrie
Both Sides Now - Joni Mitchell
Where Have All The Flowers Gone - The Kingston Trio
Blowin’ in the Wind - Bob Dylan
Mr. Bojangles - Jerry Jeff Walker

Most of those are really folksy, so cool. The only one I was iffy on was Mr. BoJangles, but I looked it up and it's classified as folk. Plus the more I think about it the more folksy it becomes to me. Plus I love that song. So yeah, you're good.

It's written by a folk singer and preformed by a band that sometimes preforms folkish type music but that particular song isn't listed as folk.

Everybody knows that song. What is everyone else's opinion about it? It's pretty hard to be folk to me but I'll take everyone's else's opinion into consideration.

It's got folk instruments in it, has an Irish folk quality but it's also performed more as Punk. Punk Folk I'd call it.

here's mine.

Amália Rodrigues Fado Português (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1YriVM8sC7M)
example of Portuguese Fado music - tradtionally melancholic haunting songs of loss, sung by one of the most famous singers

Great Voices of Bulgaria Womens Choir - Pilentze Pee (http://https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5v3piS-mScI)
I heard these women on tv a while back and their voices stopped me in my tracks. I think it's beautiful, not sure what you'll think but gonna give it a chance!

The next two are songs from my home town Liverpool, sung by the sailors a lot in pubs. You always used to get them sung at closing time :)
The Spinners - the Leaving of Liverpool (http://https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tGGAS9lKbLI)

The Spinners - Maggie May (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wc4GITm7PfY)

The Dubliners and the Pogues - Irish Rover (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=au30c9ZMIPg)
Thought I'd put up this live version where you can actually see Shane MacGowan standing up looking relatively normal!

Rapalje - Raggle Taggle Gipsy (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uOoaNi4xvv0)
this one's a real multinational one - a Scottish song sung by a Dutch Celtic band.

Billy Bragg and Kirsty McColl - New England (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-v4a6NaU5Rg)
Billy Bragg wrote this, but I like this version with the much missed Kirsty McColl singing with him.

Suo Gan - Charlotte Church (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=n-F9hKsw-KI)

Traditional Welsh lullaby sung by the young Charlotte Church

The Strawbs - Part of the Union (http://https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KdOCWUgwiWs)
very reminiscent of the 70s folk rock sound

Ewan McColl and Peggy Seeger - Sweet Thames Flow Softly (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zmn5pOxb2iM)
Ewan McColl is the dad of the above Kirsty

I've added a sea shanty

Johnny Collins - Leave Her Johnny (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4fVQwzv5Qfc)

I think Folk Rock can be a fuzzy area and a host of music that can't be defined by other genres gets thrown into it. It's also not really Folk. It's like how Hard Rock, Prog Rock, etc. isn't Rock and Roll. They share a name because because one branched out from another but they're separate genres.

09-11-14, 10:01 PM
I know what you're saying VFN, but I don't know that there's much to do about it. A lot of people who grew up listening to Elvis didn't think The Stones were Rock 'N' Roll. Music just evolves. New country doesn't sound anything like old country either. I don't have a clue personally how to classify it; that's why I looked up all my songs.

No, Moondance isn't Irish folk; it's not even close but it sounds close enough to the 70's type of folk.

There are songs that are probably just the other side of folk being nominated but as long as there not so far off as to be ridiculous, I'm not going to be that hard about it.

I would rather a few iffy songs get in than to suck the fun out of this by nitpicking. As long as the majority is really folksy, I'm happy.

1. Suo Gan - Charlotte Church vs Tom Waits - I Hope That I Don't Fall in Love with You

This was definitely the toughtest match-up in this round. I love both songs, but the Tom Wait song just sounds more like folk music to me.

2. Steeleye Span - All Around My Hat vs Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea

3. Dick Justice - Henry Lee vs Robyn Hitchcock - I Often Dream of Trains

I prefer Robyn Hitchcock's voice, but I like the other song more.

4. The Byrds - Mr.Tambourine Man vs Billy Bragg and Kirsty McColl - New England

5. Fleet Foxes - White Winter Hymnal vs Islaja - Skeleton Walk

6. Arlo Guthrie - City of New Orleans vs John Stewart - Over the Hill

7. The Monkees - As We Go Along vs Woody Guthrie - I Ain't Got No Home In This World Anymore

I love both songs, but song by The Monkees is beautiful.

8. The Folksmen - Old Joe's Place vs Doc Watson - Amazing Grace

Wow. So many good songs. Felt like I just listened to a jam-packed amazing album. A shame I have to make choices.

1. I Hope That I Don't Fall in Love with You -- Really like this song. Suo Gan was a bit too operatic and not my tongue.

2. In the Aeroplane Over the Sea - Really liked this too.

3. I Often Dream of Trains -Unfair fight here ultimately as Trains has vastly better production. A shame.

4. Mr.Tambourine Man - Grudgingly as it removes some great verses from the original.

5. White Winter Hymnal - A dreamy, hypnotic atmosphere.

6. City of New Orleans- A classic, neatly written.

7. I Ain't Got No Home In This World Anymore - The Monkees song was co-written by Carole King btw.

8. Amazing Grace - What is it about this song that resonates so strongly? A version with music may've won this thing.

Thanks for all the great music. Too bad some will not move on.

I don't think she has a good voice (at least not in this song), I felt it was weak lyrically and just generally hard to listen to. Seemed to me that it was experimental and different just for the sake of being different and weird. The entire song and accompanying video was just...uncomfortable. Maybe that's intentional though, I don't know. Maybe I'm just not "hip" anymore haha

I don't consider myself hip at all, I just like the music that I do. Also, I don't think that song/video is a great representation of most of her music. I bought all her albums today and, most of her older stuff is very folky.

good songs all round. Hard choices some of them

1. Suo Gan - Charlotte Church vs Tom Waits- I Hope That I Don't Fall in Love with You

Looks like Tom doesn't need my help so I'll have to vote for my own song. I'm not a huge fan of the operatic quality but the lullaby is just beautiful. Did you remember it was the song the young Christian Bale sang in Empire of the Sun? Maybe I should've used that version! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=yyf059psVew
I'm a big fan of Tom Waits tho so I'm happy with him going through

I avoid looking at who nominated what, and I try not to look at who voted for what until after I vote because I don't want it to subconsciously affect my voting.

And for this tournament, I can't even remember what I nominated. I had to look back at my list when someone, (I think it was Swan), asked who nominated a John Denver song yesterday.

That is definitely reminiscent of her typical stuff. S U U, her recent album featuring Skeleton Walk, is her only English album. Since she is not a native English speaker, that's probably why her voice sounds strange on it.

Big time. My mom loved James Taylor, Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris and all that kind of stuff. This tournament brings back a lot of memories of her. This was her type of music.

Right on.

No problem. This is actually a good time to plug Grooveshark for the upcoming three strikes and your out tournament. That one is going to have to be more obscure stuff and you can find a lot more variety and better versions on Grooveshark than you can youtube. I always go to YouTube out of habit, but Grooveshark is better, I think. I hardly ever have a problem finding anything.

Oh no, I'm forced to make choices again. So many good songs and lyrics some quite cryptic.

1. Bon Iver - Creature Fear

Really tough as Ochs' lyrics are tight but Fear's mystical, captivating, quality got me.

2. Bob Dylan - Blowin’ in the Wind

Not the fake Youtube version. "Yes, how many times must a man turn his head pretending he just doesn't see?" Probably the greatest protest song ever written.

3. Simon & Garkunfel - Mrs.Robinson

Unfair fight. A hit song. Has there ever been a better melody writer than Simon besides McCartney?

4. Bob Dylan - Knockin on Heaven's Door

I respect Baez and like Diamonds and Rust but her voice just turns me off basically. I find it soulless. When I hear it I get a craving for mayonnaise on white bread.

5. Woody Guthrie - This Land Is Your Land

Unfair fight, but I'm going with Woodrow cause he's the man.

http://jeffzittrain.com/This_Machine_Kills_Fascists.gif

6. Grizzly Bear - On a Neck, On a Spit

Fell asleep for a few and this song was still playing! Like the Enoesque quality in parts. Neil Young's song is too long itself and everyone's heard it. Went for the underdog.

7. Leonard Cohen - Suzanne

Not even close. Phranc's song is a nice strummer, but Suzanne is mesmerizing, the lyrics transporting. Wow.

8. Cat Stevens - Oh Very Young

This was a really hard one too, a real toss up. Of Cities really grew on me as I listened and was gritty and spoke a truth, but Cat Steven is a musical genius whose voice I love so....
