View Full Version : The Classical Music Thread
I've been studying music for the past 15 years and opera singing for the past 5, I'm finishing my bachelor now, so classical music is a huge part of my life...
Do you MoFo's like classical music?
Have any favourite composer/work/period?
Here goes some of my personal favourites:

I always wanted to explore classical music more but still haven't gotten to it as much as I'd like.
I don't know if he counts because he's modern, but my absolute favorite composer and one of my favorite musicians in general is Krzysztof Penderecki. I think he's incredible.

My mom has Classic FM on all the time, so when I'm home I'm exposed to it quite a lot. I used to be quite resistant to it but I've come to enjoy a bunch of classical music. It's an acquired taste for lots of people, I guess. I wouldn't consider myself an aficionado by any means, but I have a few favourites:

I have a varied taste from Chopin to Wagner. Chopin is my probably favorite.

My favourites seem cliche by comparison, but I love Strauss and Tchaikovsky. I haven't listened to nearly enough classical music though, so that could change in time. :D

I'm not really knowledgeable when it comes to music (I don't even have a favorite band, artist, or genre), but lately I've found myself appreciating classical music more and more.
Generally I tend to prefer music that doesn't rely on a voice or lyrics, so you could say classical music is right up my alley. The best thing I find about classical is that it has the ability and power to make me truly feel the real emotion that was put into the work.

Well, classical music refers not only to the classic period but to modern and contemporary periods aswell and of course Penderecki is one of the most interesting composers in the XX century... I love his choral work specially!

Strauss and Tchaikovsky are hardly cliche... :) They are both amazing and are both among my absolute favourite composers!
Well, if you already have some knowledge about it, it will definitely change in time... It's a kind of art that needs time to grow in ourselves but once it's there it's garanteed! :)
To all classical music fans, have some Debussy!

I love Beethoven, the only classical musician I put into my top 100 albums list.
Debussy's piano works are very good as well. Vivaldi is another one that I like. Though I still need to listen to a lot more before I can claim to be familiar with classical music.
I've been discovering some work by Brahms recently and I have to say I'm amazed... So much strength!

Translation:
For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts;
even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other;
yea, they have all one breath;
So that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity.
All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again.
Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth?
Wherefore I perceive that there is nothing better, than that a man should rejoice in his own works;
for that is his portion: for who shall bring him to see what shall be after him?

I've not experienced that much classical music which is a shame. There's pieces I like but sometimes I have no idea what they're called. The power of classical music is pretty amazing tho. I went to see a film called The Deep Blue Sea by Terence Davies, the film wasn't all that special but the music moved me to tears and it still can, it was Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, Op. 14, 2nd movement 'Andante'

another one that makes me cry is Un Bel di Vedremo from Madame Butterfly . I know you hear it everywhere but it was my mum's favourite so it always reminds me of her :)

There's something special about this specific recording of the New World Symphony. The production is peak and it allows for the full extent of emotion.
