View Full Version : How often do you change you avatar and/or your profile picture?

I don't post on a bunch of other forums, so I don't know what's "normal" for most forums, and what's not.

I noticed that a lot of you guys seem to change your avatar every day or two. Is that normal on most Internet forums, or is that just here?

What about your profile picture? Do most of you change that every few days too? I rarely look at profiles, so I don't really notice if the picture changes often. How often do you look at other members profiles?

How often do you change you avatar and/or your profile picture?
What makes you decide to change it, and how do you decide on the new ones?
Do you change your favorite movies listed in your profile a lot too, or do those usually stay the same?

I tend to keep to the Superman Shield with an R...

I change the design around but am usually using the R Diamond. Not sure really why... I've used the design since I joined MoFo even though Superman isn't even in my Top 50 favourites.
I think it's just cool to have my own Superman Diamond, and it's a movie themed avatar too, which is fitting for the forum.

My profile banner though, I've kept as the original RoboCop VHS cover and poster since Yoda introduced profile banners. I occasionally change the effects I put on it, but it's always RoboCop.

Other forums tend not to change as much as some of the guys on here. I think it's just down to the medium of the forum.
Movies and movie tastes change a lot, which I guess is why MoFos change their avatars a few times.
I mean, some MoFos might use their Top 100 Favourites, meaning they'll change their avi daily depending on their mood.

I change mine about every 2 weeks.. it stays Mads but it changes....I think only 3 or 4 times it was something else and only for a short time.. less than a few days....

I change my avatar whenever the mood strikes me, or whenever I get tired of Sexy's bitching. I think I'll hang on to this one for awhile. I like it a lot.

I've had the same banner pretty much since the feature was introduced. I tried out a few animated Joaquin banners, but it just seemed like the images got too grainy when converted for use as a banner. I think the combo of the Joaquin avatar and the Ratatouille banner is more representative of me anyway.

I too go with my mood. it also depends if I am part of a "game" sometimes my avie corresponds with that. 9 times outta 10 though mine has something to do with Flash Gordon and or Max Von Sydow.

I didn't have an avatar for the first 5 or 6 years here and only picked one when Destiny talked me into playing the Movie Theme game. Had one since. I didn't change too often, but then SC would start bitching about having the same one and make me a new one, so I'd use that until it happened again. :D Lately, SFS has been making gif avatars for me and I've used those. I like to keep them in rotation and so change every week or so.

Not too often. I've been here a year and three quarters and this Ice Truck KIller one is my third, after My Solozzo one and my Pazazu one. I think i've kept that Walter White Banner from the start.

Users fall into three types on this front:

1) Never change, never surrender. This happens when someone has an unusually appropriate/awesome avatar, and after awhile they become so associated with it that it gets harder to change, anyway.

2) Change constantly. Whatever strikes them, whatever they've been watching or thinking about recently or just thought was cool.

3) Change, but within a common theme. IE: I usually just change to another Yoda avatar, honeykid to another Drew Barrymore avatar, Miss Vicky to another Joaquin avatar, etc.

No right way to do it. :) But I do think it changes how people interact with each other more than they realize.

But I do think it changes how people interact with each other more than they realize.

It totally does. I hardly ever actually look at a person's username. I know them by their avatars. So if a person keeps the same avatar for a long time and suddenly changes it to something completely different, it almost feels like they're a stranger. Unless, of course, it's Sexy. I always know when it's Sexy.

And that recent day when a bunch of people took Swan's Fantastic Planet avatar was just all kinds of confusing.

Yeah it's the Ice Truck Killer, noone seems to notice. I have a friend who is a much bigger Dexter fan than me, and because he has very similar hair he actually thought i'd used him as an avatar :rotfl:.

I was thinking more in terms if regarding them as friendly, hostile, goofy, etc. But what you're saying is totall true, as well. Which is why everyone switching avatars for April Fool's was so effective!

I've more or less kept the same Profile image from the start, i tried a few to test it out then just stuck with the Walter White one, i will probably change it soon though. I only really look at profile pages to see their banner or leave them a comment.

Out of interest are you going to fill in your favourite movies? I'm curious to know what some of your favourites are.

I've thought about it several times, but my favorite movies seem to change day to day depending on my mood. I'm having a hard time choosing only 10 movies to list there.

But in answer to your question, yes, I am planning to fill them in, as soon as I can figure out which 10 movies to list there. I'll try to get some of my faves listed there soon.

I recognize posters by their avatars, not by their names. Unless they have a distinctive name that stands out. So when avatars change I often don't remember who the person was for awhile.

What Yoda and Miss Vicky said about viewing the personality of a poster based on their avatar pic is true for me. I tend to think of you guys as being your avatar.

I chose that exact pic of Orson because it suits who I am. To me it looks to be friendly, a little silly, but still Orson. Compare it to this one I almost used.

I put 10 of my favorite movies in there for now, but they're not necessarily my # 1-10 top favorite movies. They're just 10 movies that I absolutely love, and can watch over and over again.

I have a small handful of movies that I would consider my absolute favorites. If I had to pick my #1 favorite movie, it would probably be Close Encounters of the Third Kind, followed closely by Wall-E, and Steven Spielberg's Always.

Good stuff . Hope i didn't pressure you there :p. I've only watched three of those but i enjoyed them all. Close Encounters was on my 70s list and is one of my fav Spielbergs, Dial M For Murder was on my top 50 list. And while i'm not the biggest fan of Arsenic and Old Lace i did like it, and it's one of my mums all time favourites. Despite my Scotishness i doubt i'd like Brigadoon as i'm not really a fan of musicals. The rest i'm interested in though.

No, you didn't pressure me. Like I said, I've tried to fill that section in a few times, but I can't seem to decide on only 10 movies. Even now, while I was filling it in, I changed some of the slots several times before I saved it.

I love Cary Grant, and I'll watch anything that he's in, so that slot could be just about any Cary Grant movie, but Arsenic and Old Lace is one of my favorites of his movies.

The same thing with Brigadoon. I love Gene Kelly, and that could be just about any of his movies, but Brigadoon is one of my favorites of his movies.

I flipped through several musicals as well while filling in the slots, including West Side Story, Damn Yankees!, Singin' in the Rain, My Fair Lady, The Music Man, etc.

I don't know how you guys come up with your top 100 lists. I have walls and walls of DVDs, and many of them are favorites, so I don't think it would be any easier for me if that section was a top 100 instead of just a top 10.

The moving gif of the shark I posted was different than the one Im using now. The original was compressed to fit the sites dimension criteria. He kinda looks like a fat shark. Does he still look like a shark, or more like a minnow? Yes I'm seriously asking :)

I've lost track of how long I've held onto my current avatar, which is about a decade old by this point (a relic of another forum where the size restrictions were 80x80), plus it's got some synergy with my username (both of which were taken from Metal Gear Solid 2).

As of writing, I have not changed my profile banner and probably don't care enough to do it again anytime soon.
