What If is a film about two friends who try to live their lives with the age old burning question over their heads, can a girl and a boy just be friends without the sexual tension getting in the way? As the story unfolds it becomes clear that Wallace (Daniel Radcliffe) is finding it much harder than Chantry (Zoe Kazan) even if he is un willing to admit it.
What really got me to this film was a review, not even a review but one line of a review stating: "The best rom com since '500 Days of Summer". The problem is this made me go in with MASSIVE expectations, I expected far to much from this film and sadly the film was just unable to deliver on it.
It is not a bad film it is just not that good. I had a few smiles but I didn't laugh and neither did anyone else in the audience - not one. It was simply not witty or clever enough and the gross out moments it put in where they simply for shack value, nothing more. What is worse is that the "oh aren't we so twee and loveable" moments just didn't work, it didn't endear me towards these people and when I am meant to be routing for this couple to finally realise they want to be together but am in fact thinking "just get out of her life and move on" then the film has failed.
The writing style is not good enough, the humour is not there, the music is not good enough, the shots are basic, the script is not good enough and it is so cliched from other films I have seen I wonder if it had to pay royalties to other films makers but what really upsets the most is how it does upset me. I left a little cold inside and wondering why I felt such a way, now that I am sitting down and actually thinking about it I am actually angry I got sucked into it.
My rating: 1/10*
*And it only gets that because Adam Driver was actually quite good in it.
