Ok, I know this idea has probably been done but i want some good albums and tunes now!!

Please suggest any albums or songs that you can't live without. Remember put down the genre so people can browse for their tastes.

Album, genre = heavy rock

White Pony - Deftones

I don't know exactly what genre Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds belong to - perhaps melancholic and poetic alternative rock with religious undertones :D . But I think each and every music lover should own a copy of:

The Boatman's Call

When we're in this area of music about life's darker corners, another "must have" is Bonnie Prince Billy's (a.k.a. Will Oldham):

I See a Darkness

And finally... Might as well finish this off with the masters of melancholy, Red House Painters, and their masterpiece from 1993:

Red House Painters

Ironically, they made two albums in 1993, both called nothing but "Red House Painters". The one you have to get today is the so called "Rollercoaster album". You'll understand why it's called that when you see it. Then you buy "Songs for a Blue Guitar", then you buy "Ocean Beach" and then you buy the other one from 1993. Get it?

End of lesson for today, boys and girls. I will return soon with another genre.

Damn! I've got you in my control! :D

"Directions"? I have all their albums I think but I have never heard that song. Where did you hear it?

You should also definately check out:

"Devotion + Doubt" by Richard Buckner

It's such a beautiful mellow album. It's a bit alternative country/folk/rock. Really really good but not many people know about Richard Buckner.

And I might as well tip you about another hero of mine in this melancholic folk/rock genre, Nick Drake. You could buy the two best albums "Time of No Reply" and "Pink Moon" but you might as well get:

"Fruit Tree"

That's a 4-cd box with all his three original albums plus a cd with previously unreleased material. (He made so few album because he died at a young age in 1974). It really is essential in your collection. Go buy!

I too love Radiohead but mostly their early stuff up to "OK Computer". I haven't bothered to listen very much to the new electronica sound but some of the songs I've heard is really good, like that "Pyramid Song", or what the hell that one was called. I saw them some years ago and they were great.

Industrial Rock isn't really my cup of tea, but I guess some NIN stuff is cool. I loved what Mr Trent did for "Quake", the pc game. :D That game screwed up a whole semester for me. Talk about obsession.

I like this topic!

oops, i meant to say the song "Have you forgotten". It's on the Vanilla Sky soundtrack which you should definatly look at.

Have you heard of a band called Sigur Ros ? They're music is so beautiful. Try and listen to the album Agaetis Byrjun.

Also, Jeff Buckly - Grace

Yeah, I've been a fan from the beginning. I love the electronica stuff. Do you like Joy Division ? They are superb, NIN covered one Dead Souls off them for the crow soundtrack.

This topic is great, i'm addicted to music, so it's cool to know where to get more of what you're into.

Oooh, "Have You Forgotten". Yeah, that's the song that got me hooked. I couldn't believe the beauty of it the first time I heard it. The acoustic guitar, the sad voice and the pedal steel harmonies. *ssssigh*. That one's on "Songs For a Blue Guitar". It was the first Red House Painters cd I bought and I love it. Actually it has the largest number of favourite RHP-tracks of mine on it, but it's a bit uneven. The first three tracks are majestic, then there's a cover of a The Cars song, "All Mixed Up", which is heartbreakingly beautiful. (And has the coolest drumbeat ever...).

Red House Painters have made some very cool covers, not only "All Mixed Up", and sometimes you don't even recognize the song. They do it in a complete different way than the original. On the "Shock Me EP" you have an awsome cover of Kiss' "Shock Me", one of my absolute favourite Kiss songs, that'll knock you off your feet. Also the singer, Mark Kozelek, has made some solo records. Check out:

"Rock'n'Roll Singer"

It has some really cool Ac/Dc covers on it (yup, you heard me... Ac/Dc). Especially the title track is a little gem. There's alos some tracks written by Kozelek on there.

I've seen Kozelek two times and Red House Painters one time. The first time I saw K was a disappointment because he was opening up for The Falming Lips and a lot of people were standing around talking and drinking when he played his acoustic set. So he got pissed off and played real crappy on purpose. Jerk. The other time I saw him he was so great, but then there was a minor problem with the guitar sound and he decided to go completely acoustic. No mic no nothing. I couldn't hear ****. Jerk. The one time I saw Red House Painters they just played boring versions of boring, mostly new, songs. It was looooong and dull. Jerk.

Sigur Ros. They're from Iceland, right? I walked by their cd on the listening stand a couple of times. Maybe I should give them a shot.

About Richard Buckley. Actually, I think someone told me he's better known here in Sweden and Scandinavia than in his home country, USA. But he has made a lot of cds by now. At least five, I think. But the one I told you about is the one that I love.

The only Joy Division song I know about is "Love Will Tear Us Apart", which of course is a underground classic. Otherwise, I don't know. I like a lot of New Order's stuff though. Their latest album has some great tracks on it, especially "Turn My Way" with Billy Corgan on some vocals. Excellent lyrics and wonderful music. They released a "Best of" recently that I think I will have to get. (For those who didn't know: New Order was formed by the three remaining members of Joy Division after the singer, Ian Curtis, hung himself).

There is a song by a band from New Zeeland, The Chills, called "Pink Frost" that I think has what I think of as Joy Division feel over itself. Don't know why I think that since I have just heard a couple of songs with J D. Anyway..... Check it out. It's cool... One of the best intros ever.

Actually, I have been standing back for a while. I could double and triple post any day!

more suggestions

(Electronic/chillout)

Joy Division - Substance 1970-1980 (hits)
Portishead - Dummy

I guess I will have to check out Joy Division one of these day for real. I don't have a downloading program on this pc because it's no point - this pc is so crappy.

Portishead. Haven't heard that much of those trip hop pioneers, but I have a friend who always plays them on our pre-parties. They are really cool.

If you want to hear the ultimate chill out song - download "More Than Ever" - Bedhead. Really cool and the outro is just so amazing.

Smashing Pumpkins- Adore

I kind of lost interest after "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness", but "Siamese Dream" is one of those albums that I listened to every day for a couple of months. Yeah, you could say it was my favourite album for a while.

Other "favourite albums for a while":

The Stone Roses - "S/t"
This album is just so beautiful. It's so complete. You can use it for fall asleep to as well a jumping around to - or make love to someone pretty to. :D

Teenage Fanclub - "Bandwagonesque"
Contains some of the most beautiful pop songs ever written, but because of low self esteem they're hidden in a wonderful distortion and lo-fi camouflage.

Dinosaur Jr - "Where You Been"
I'm telling you - this is one of the most influential albums ever. There is nothing else like this. It's a little bit like the Teenage Fanclub album. Great melodies drenched in mad guitars and powerful bass and drums. And the singing is more like headache moaning. :) I love it! And if you're into guitar playing... Check this guy out...

Archers of Loaf - "Archers of Loaf vs. The Greatest of All Times" (EP), "Vee Vee" & "All the Nation's Airports"
When we're on the melodious noise subject anyway... These guys should be treated as kings. Or should have been.. the band doesn't exist anymore. I think you have to like certain kind of music to like these albums. it's a "love it or hate it" situation. I, naturally, love it.

(soundtrack)

Lost Boys Soundtrack

Yeah, I remember we used to listen a lot to that soundtrack - only I don't remember what songs were on it. Is Echo and the Bunnymen on there??

I would like to recommend the soundtrack of "Dazed and Confused" by Richard Linklater. Superb soundtrack from a superb film.

And now I would like to promote some swedish acts! :D

The Hellacopters - "By the Grace of God"
It's about time they got their break in US. They been trying for long and the audience love them, but they don't seem to cut it with the american music companies. This is rock'n'roll at its best! And they are absolutely one of the greatest rock live acts in the world. I promise you.

Mando Diao - "Bring 'Em In"
Brats. But they sure can play. I love the song "The Band". I saw them live recently and they rock!

Sahara Hotnights
I don't know if they've made another album since "Jennie Bomb". They're not my favourite band perhaps, but I think they are good at what they do. And they kick ass live. Oh... and they are all chicks... and cute chicks too.

The Hives - "Your New Favourite Band"
I'm sure you've heard of this band. They played at the MTV Music Awards or something in New York last year. They're cool.

Christian Kjellvander - "Songs From a Two-Room Chapel"
A little different from the other bands I've mentioned. This is more in the area of Richard Buckner and Will Oldham and those guys if you remember me telling you about them. This is good.

I also have both of those albums they are classic. Adore was the album that really made me take notice of Corgan's writing skills though, every song is so beautiful and creepy, it's endless. I only wish they would've ended with this album instead of machina of god or whatever. I also think the 'zwan' stuff is pretty meaningless, far too upbeat for corgan, gives him a hippy status.

The Stone Roses - "S/t"

I never really got into them, i have a hits compilation but the only songs I really like were I am the Resurrection, Waterfalls, Fools Gold and Made of Stone .

Teenage Fanclub - "Bandwagonesque"

I'll check them out. I think they did a cover of the undertones' Teenage Kicks but I'm not sure.

Dinosaur Jr - "Where You Been"
Archers of Loaf - "Archers of Loaf vs. The Greatest of All Times" (EP), "Vee Vee" & "All the Nation's Airports"

I will check these out asap!! ;)

Yeah, I remember we used to listen a lot to that soundtrack - only I don't remember what songs were on it. Is Echo and the Bunnymen on there??

yeh the bunnymen do a cover of the doors' People are Strange. Also featured are great tunes from INXS, Roger Daltrey and an amazing theme to the film Cry Little Sister by Gerard McMann.

I would like to recommend the soundtrack of "Dazed and Confused" by Richard Linklater. Superb soundtrack from a superb film.

oooh, a lez zep fan? me too. My favourite album is Physical Graffitti. The Rover is my favourite tune. I haven't got round to seeing the film yet though.

I've got the Hives album and it's great. I haven't heard of any of the other acts but I'll find them.

If you like the Hives sort of stuff listen to

The Strokes - This is it
The Vines - Highly Evolved
BRMC - Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
The White Stripes - White Blood Cells

woohoo. mention ust haves here then,

This is a cool thread, and I think it's time that I join in.:yup:

The albums I currently think are worth owning are as follows:

Rock:

Audioslave S/T - "Like a Stone" is my favorite song right now.

Queens of The Stone Age, Songs for the Deaf - The best rock album since 1994!

Metal:

System of a Down, everything they've done.

White Zombie, El Sexorcisto: Devil Music Vol 1. (You can't argue with a classic)

Punk:

The Distillers, Sing Sing Death House

Yeah Yeah Yeahs, S/T EP (This is beyond brilliant if you can find it...)

X, Los Angeles (1980's classic. Possibly better than Never mind the Bollocks Here's The Sex Pistols...)

Rap/Hip Hop:

Public Enemy, All their stuff.

Eminem, The Marshall Mathers LP

Snoop Dogg, Doggystyle

Run DMC, Tougher Than Leather

The Streets, Original Pirate Material

Stuff I can't Catergorize:

Gorillaz, Gorillaz vs. Spacemonkeyz: Laika Come Home (Trippy!)

Bjork, Debut

Yeah, all those bands are cool. The Strokes always make me think of Lou Reed and Velvet Underground but in a poppier way. Have you heard of a band called Smog? Really cool "reedish" stuff. Check out songs like "Hit the Ground Running", "Dress Sexy at My Funeral" and "River Guard". Excellent! I saw a live concert with BRMC on tv and it was awesome. They really sound un-american too me, in a positive way. They're like a british band who figured out how to rock. Get it? And White Sripes, what can I say... So cool.

Well, I guess I can live with any of those albums. I love the song "Heroes". That reminds me of Oasis since they've done a cover version of that one. I think everyone should own a cope of:

"Definately Maybe"
which is the ultimate rock album. Have Iallready mentioned this one? I don't remember and I can't bother to check it out...

 Everytime I hear The Distillers I want to throw the tv out of the window. She sings worse than Courtney Love in her baddest moments. And the two songs I've heard make me wonder what the songs that didn't make it as singles sounds like. A bit too OI OI OI for me.

I have to check X out. I often read about them in articles about Dead Kennedys and stuff. Better than The Bollocks?? Can I take your word on that??

Monkey, you should check out a cd from the 90's with a band called Guns'n'Wankers. It's a british band on the american label Fat Wreck Chords. I think the album is called "For Listening and Dancing" and includes songs like "Skindeep", "Sunstroke" and "Nervous". They later changed name to something I don't remember. But this cd is great.

Rap/Hip Hop:

Public Enemy, All their stuff.

Eminem, The Marshall Mathers LP

Snoop Dogg, Doggystyle

Run DMC, Tougher Than Leather

The Streets, Original Pirate Material

Public Enemy, can't argue with you on that one. The greatest rap group ever?? I wish the hip hop artists of today were more radical and political like PE instead of only rapping about drugs, crime and bitches. I'm not saying that they should stop rapping about that, but they have such an opportunity to influence the youth of America in a good direction. Tupac was great in that sense.

Eminem. Appears to be a real ******* but still a true genius. He actually makes me think about Elvis in a funny way, know what I mean? The industry of course has realized this potential too since the biggest group of buyers of hip hop cds are white middleclass boys. Is Eminem the Messias or what for these guys??? But he is a lot more genuine than Elvis was. As Chuck D and Flavor Flav put it:

"Elvis was a hero of most but he never meant **** to me. Racist the sucker was simple and plain. Mother **** him and John Wayne! Aight!!!"

Snoop Dogg must be the coolest rapper ever. You can't think bad of him no matter how sexist he'll ever get. He will always appear to be a really nice guy. The song that does it to me everytime is: "Gz and Hustlaz". The bassline, man!

Run Dmc. I didn't know what rap was before I heard those guys. That brings me back to when I was 11-12 years old. So much memories from my hometown and my childhood.

The Streets. That guy is really cool. I haven't heard the cd all through, but "Move This Forward" (is it called that?) is so good. It's very unique what The Streets is doing.

By the way... I made an entirely new topic just to talk about Beck's song "Lost Cause" but of course not a single soul replied to it. Has anyone of you guys heard this song and seen the video?? I have only seen it and heard it one time but it is stuck in my mind. The video is so cool and the song is so beautiful. Great stuff!

Firstly, thankyou monkeypunch for joining this thread!! I'll try out some of those bands you're talking about by downloading off kazaa. I don't like hip hop/ garage/rap music at all really. The nearest to it which i like is rage against the machine or Cypress Hill.

Also Pidd, since you mentioned hole (not in a good sense maybe but) I'd like to give an honorable mention to their Celebrity Skin album which is superb. It was mostly co-written with Billy Corgan.

I must urge you to listen to David Bowie!!. Buy a greatest hits album or something because his music is amazing.

Nikk, I'll get that tune, I know you've been saying it for ages!!

As for the Lost Cause thread Pidd, we could use that to try out new songs, if everyone has downloading software, i don't know. nbut if you have say it here!

Yeah, I must admit Courtney shaped up considerably on that one singingwise, and songwritingwise too but that probably thanks to Billy Corgan.

I must urge you to listen to David Bowie!!. Buy a greatest hits album or something because his music is amazing.

I like a lot of his stuff, but some I don't like equally much. But he's a great artist and songwriter. There's a lot of other artists that we wouldn't have if it wasn't for him. (Suede, Marilyn Manson, The Smiths, Boy George)

Oh, 1994 was a banner year for rock, I tell ya. Nirvana's In Utero, Smashing Pumpkins' Siamese Dream and Pices Escariot, Hole's Live through This, Green Day's Dookie....All classics. Or am I just showing my age? I am totally early 1990's boy when it comes to music. 1994 was also the last year rock was any good, if you ask me. Kurt died, and it all fell apart shortly after.

I said possibly. I haven't decided yet. But X's Los Angeles is certainly my favorite album from the original Punk Era (1974 -1981, if you ask me. When Darby Crash killed himself, that's when punk ended...). But yeah, X was really pretty brilliant. They mixed punk with 1960's influences, most notably the Doors.
Dead Kennedys are also a favorite of mine. I love the anarchist politics they put into a lot of their songs.

Dude, both "Siamese Dream" and "In Utero" are from 1993. "Dookie", however, was a favourite album of mine and I still love it. It's one of those albums that you listened to every day for a long period of time. I was 19 and in the military when it was released (not as macho as it sounds, I tell you, and I had to do it though I really didn't wanna) and I remember going to a Bad Religion concert with Green Day as an opening act. Green Day stole the whole ****ing show! It was great! Bad Religion was ok too, a bit of a disappointment since I was a great fan at the time, but still ok. But Green Day rocked the place!

Seriously, I don't mind the song. I just have problems taking it seriously since it's Christina Aguileriaririeriaryia who does it. It's so very different from "Dirrrrty" so I'm having problems feeling any kind of realness in her singing those words. But I guess she's taken a lot of crap for the way she dresses and stuff (she kind of asks for it though) so maybe it's real.

As you might have noticed, I can't take a song for just what it is - a song. I analyze too much, I know, I know...

But I guess it's a nice message in the song so I can't really complain too much about it. I'm sure it helps a lot of people getting through their day.

Yeah, i can't like that cause she doesn't really write her own material so it's hard to take it seriously.

Oh, I'm just getting into reggae recently. I like the obvious Bob Marley, but then I also like Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff, Lee Perry, Buju Banton, and Desmond Dekker. I also like the original Jamaican Ska, like The Skatalites, Toots and the Maytals, and Prince Buster.

Some Ska albums to look for:

Skatalites: Foundation Ska

Hepcat: Right on time

OK, I just got a couple of albums in which I strongly recommend

Cat Power - You Are Free - Folk type music, very mellow, amazing lyrics, this woman has an amazing voice! Wow, stand out tracks are Good Woman and He War, on the latter Foo Fighters/Nirvana's Dave Grohl guests as drummer.

David Bowie - Low, ok so you may know that I am already a bit of a bowie fan but I've never got around to this album and now I have. It's just fantastic! The first half of songs have haunting like lyrics reminiscent of Radiohead's OK Computer, then it just turns instrumetal, wow I've listened to this every day since I got it it. Stand out tracks Sound and Vision - you must know this song already, it's a classic! and Always Crashing in the Same Car good lyrics, great melody.........

Actually, I just saw Cat Power on Letterman last night (they show it one week delayed over here). She has a great voice, yes, and the song was good too. Don't remember what it was called though.

Just got the new White Stripes CD, Elephant, and it is just.....amazing. It's one of those CD's where every track is great, and it makes everything else out there pale in comparison. It's THE album to get right now. Jack White is seriously the best guitar player on the planet at this moment. Best track: Ball and Biscuit. Truly frightening garage blues that kicks the @ss of anything recorded in the past few years.

Also good, but to a slightly lesser degree, is The Flaming Lips, Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots. It's really trippy, almost like Pink Floyd, but the songs have ridiculous lyrics about robots and karate.

"Can You Get to That" - Funkadelic is the best acoustic funk song out there. :)

"Invisible (My Song)" - Laleh. Swedish, multi-ethnical stuff. This girl writes and plays everything herself which makes her really cool. This track makes me think a bit of Kate Bush (for some reason - it's not the voice). It is really good....

her voice resides - bullet for my valentine

great song, grinding guitars and great vocal stylings

No fun in fundamentalism - NOFX

this song made me laugh and think but in an unexpected way with lyrics such as:

'theres no fun in bible study class
theres no fun getting f.ucked in the ass
by a priest
unless you're old and into that'

OK here's some of my suggestions

Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy

Quite possible Led Zeppelin's greatest album and that's saying something. I haven't really heard a song like 'No Quarter' before or since.

The Pixies - Doolittle

The Pixies are constantly underrated yet very rarely bettered. Not just brilliant pop song but brilliant songs, period. 'Monkey Gone To Heaven' is also one of my favourite songs ever.

Pink Floyd - Darkside of the Moon

This is a must have for any music fan. Listen to it from start to finish to truly appreciate.

Nas - Illmatic

Widely regarded as the greatest hip hop album of all time for a very good reason. Superb production and tight rhymes throughout.

Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation

Deserves a mention because noise has never sounded better. Every track is brilliant, Teenage Riot is also a personal favourite of mine.

The Clash - London Calling

The Clash are real musicians who make real punk music not the sneering, juvenile songs of their rivals. The best punk album ever by the best punk band.

I've never quite gotten into Bjork, but once someone sent me an mp3 with vocals from a Bjork song played over something by Merzbow, which was awesome. Wish I could find that song again...

Maybe old news but you might try Cocteau Twins albums. I'm partial to Four Calendar Cafe.

Two albums I can't do without would be:

Hole - Scraping Foetus of the Wheel
Genre - basically rockabilly-punk with cheap synths, heavy sampling, some noise thrown in an a lot of tape-loops, and with some fairly literate - if cryptic - lyrics. The name should give you a general idea of what to expect content-wise, but the styles change a lot from song to song. This is the Foetus album to own (I have them all though).

A Brown Reason to Live PCPPEP - Butthole Surfers
Between this album (which compiles the Buttholes' first ep and an early live album) and 1985's Psychic... Powerless... Another Man's Sac it's a pretty tough choice. Again the sound is pretty eclectic, basically a mix of messy, psychadelic rock, noise and catchy punk (with levels of each varying from track to track, some fairly balanced-sounding, some drowning in it's own excrement).

More later if I feel like it.

Some songs currently in heavy rotation:

1. "Window of My World" - Guided by Voices

The verses contain beautiful arpeggiated guitar playing and some of the most easy-flowing vocals I've heard and the chorus sounds like Tommy era The Who

2. "Heavy Metal Drummer" - Wilco

A masterfully produced sample/rock cut off one of the best indie records of all time.

3. "Jesus Don't Want Me For a Sunbeam" - The Vaselines

Sounds much like Nirvana's cover of it but the tone is even more apathetic, conveying the theme of the song and it is somehow catchier.

4. "Sunset City" - Magnetic Fields

This guy composes brilliantly, his lyrics are great, and he sings kinda like Johnny Cash

5. "New Slang" - The Shins

In Garden State Natalie Portman claimed that this song can change your life. I have to disagree, but it is still amazing.

Gogol Bordello - Gypsy Punk. No words to describe it. I just love this cd. They're a punk/folk music act from the Ukraine. Most of my friends find it horribly annoying, but if you have an open mind and ecclectic music tastes, they are worth checking out.

I'm listening to "Madagascar" right now. The accent of the vocalist seems kinda cartoonish, but the music is great.

The Birthday Party - Hee Haw: Nick Cave's old Australian punk/no wave band. very ideosyncratic, messy punk-rock with an emphasis on overlaying incongruous melodies and noise. (Also see James Chance, for something similar but a bit more out there).

Pere Ubu - The Modern Dance: a bit more rock/old pop oriented than the above, but a nice dose of experimental noise and an interesting use of synths. Weird vocals too.

Einsturzende Neubauten - 1/2 Mensch: These guys are a German "industrial" band which are about as un-rock sounding as a rock-band can sound, in part due to their selection of percussion-heavy instruments which basically consist of found objects and self-made hardware (at a recent live show, I saw them get quite an interesting melody from blasting an air gun into different lengths of pvc pipe). This one is my favorite of their albums, and I think forms a nice middle area between their earlier straight noise and later, more accessible stuff. Also noteable, EN's frontman, Blixa Bargeld, played guitar in Nick Cave's "Bad Seeds".

James Chance & the Contortions - Buy: Chance was a Wisconsin music-school dropout who came to new york to break into the Jazz scene and ended up Joining up with some other disaffected New Yorkers to form the extremely short-lived "No Wave" movement. The bands name is pretty much an accurate discription of their sound: messy, contorted, deliberately-non-melodic mix of pop, jazz and funk influences (and from what I can tell by some of his later albums, Chance is actually a pretty talented Jazz musician).

Various Artists - No New York: Brian Eno produced compilation featuring songs by four interrelated New York punk/noise bands in the late 70s. featuring the Contortions and Lydia Lunch's band, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks

100 Flowers - 100 Years of Pulchritude: out of print compilation of this arty punk [along the lines of early Wire] offshoot of the primitive California punk band, The Urinals.

Controlled Bleeding - Penetration: these guys have been around since the late seventies, released a dozen or more albums (be careful, many actually seem to be the same albums under different titles), and ranged from noise, ideosyncratic synthy goth, dancy industrial (comparable to some Revco and Ministry), and less successfully synthy orchestral, ambient and crappy black-metal. This one is an easy choice for their best, having samples of all the best territories they've annexed and lacking the dullness of their lesser experiments.

The Residents - Duck Stab: I take back what I said about E.N. being the least rock-like rock band I've heard. This is a singular all-purpous performance art/music group. A lot of their early albums have fascinating ideas, but this one is by far their most successful at finding a compromise between experimentation and listenability. Beware, everything they've done since the early 80s sounds like midi-crap.

Severed Heads - Come Visit the Big Biggot (with Dead Eyes Opened): Obscure Australian electropop band that started out dickering around with tapeloops in a member's mother's bedroom and gradually evolved from noise+samples to synthesized melodies+noise+samples to just weird pop music. This is their best listenable album (their best unlistenable one being City Slab Horror), with nice doses of catchy pop, memorable nonsense lyrics, and creepy distorted samples. I believe Tom Ellard collaborated with Skinny Puppy on some of their better stuff.

I've become a CDbaby addict since I can't stand what passes for commercially successful these days.

Three recommendations from there, which will have no appeal at all for the under 25 crowd, are Beth Waters, Annie Burns and Hillary Scott.

Terrific ladies with small success and huge talent.
