As I finished watching 100 animated films in my marathon (I even fell a headache now), I wrote my top 100 animated films list. Now for the sake of organization I also have written a new top 100 live action films list. Of course, since I have watched several times more live action films than animated films I feel that my top 100 live action films list is much stronger: it's hard for a movie that I watch now to take out a spot on that list while many changes occurred in my top 100 animated movies list during the marathon of 100 animated movies that I did.

Why do a separate list excluding animation? Well, here we have 100 movies that I love and that use a visual language that all the people in the forums are interested in. Also, animation is a distinct artform in the same way that photographs and paintings are distinct artforms although it's possible to mix the two (like it's done with live action films that make heavy use of CGI). I classify a film as live action if all or nearly of the characters are filmed actors (i.e. Gollum in the Lord of the Rings doesn't make it an animated film).

Guap says big f word to suspense in list making. He just blasted the full list in front of our eyes!

Even Sexy Celebrity couldn't do it faster! He's embarrassed! (and angry with the number of Asian films here)

It doesn't contain any animation films by definition, so if you are allergic to cute Japanese girls twitching around it's something for you!

A brand new list of Guap's top 100 live action films! New, but contains a lot of films from the previous list, but it's new. Like, you know, by definition, because he just posted it!

I'm just advertising your list, sorry. :D

Well it kills discussion about it, but it's all out there, Guap. :) Lots of stuff to like here. I wonder how many there'd be if you took out the non-English drama and Hollywood action. :D

I do love seeing Enter The Dragon on here, though.

That's an awesome list Guap; a lot of my favorites are in there and also quite a few I plan on seeing. I watched Tokyo Story this morning and loved it btw. I watched the 3 big 70's Tarkovsky movies and struggled with them, but I do have admiration for them. I also don't like 2001, but so what, I'm in the minority. Other than that, I'm not very keen on Shutter Island, Once Upon a Time in America, or Kill Bill, but they obviously have plenty going for them. I think overall it's a phenomenal list packed with great movies.:) It's also great to see that you have a bunch of movies that are just a lot of fun, and that you can give credit for that.

I know, I know... I don't know why I have been putting off Dune for so long :p

But yeah you're right, especially Japanese cinema. I actually plan on watching Tokyo Story tonight, which will be my first Ozu. I also have Sanjuro and Yojimbo recorded, and need to watch more Kurosawa, then get to Mizoguchi. I also have two Mikio Naruse films recorded.

Nice to see some love for Bresson, Dreyer, Tarkovsky, Herzog, Bergman and other stuff i consider great. A lot of the same arthouse films would be on my list if i made one today.

Also great to see that Shoah managed to crack your top 100. Its one of those documentaries everybody should be forced to watch at least once! Its the 1 of 2 documentaries i give a full 5

The one thing i will never get is the love for Lord of the Rings. I saw the first two as a teen in the cinema and even at that time i was bored to death and thought they were horrible. I never got around to the third one. I think its also tyler1 who had it in his top 100...

It's not a thousand hours long like Shoah is, is it?

I'm not a big doco guy but I've watched, and enjoyed, a few over the last year or two and, like everyone here, I'm always on the look out for recomendations.

A little of option A and a little of option B.

I had narrowed it down to Egyptian hieroglyphics or Russian but wasn't prepared to gamble on it. I figured one of you learned folk would point me in the right direction.

I love Ikiru. I thought about nominating for the current Hall of Fame. Your taste in live-action is better than your taste in animation :p

Actually comparing my favorite live action movies with my favorite animation titles the degree of discrepancy between my favorite lists in live action and "the canon" of cinema is greater than between my listing of favorite anime and the canon of anime. (maybe because of the fact that I haven't watched as much animation titles as live action titles, so my knowledge of animation only consists of the most highly ranked stuff among anime fans and mainstream stuff like The Simpsons).

However, my favorite live action list has greater adherence to the average tastes of this forum simply because this is a live action film forum: people here like live action film by definition. People in anime forums wouldn't probably enjoy many of the movies in this top 100. So my live action film tastes have greater adherence among fans of film while my animation tastes have greater adherence among fans of animation (I think that anime and animation fans are almost the same thing because there isn't that much adult animation made outside of Japan so if you watch a substantial amount of animation, such as 100 animated series, it will naturally tend to be dominated by anime) which is perfectly logical and expected.
