The 2014 Trenton Film Festival started with a screening of the Swedish coming of age movie, We Are The Best! This film was an interesting look into the lives of two young girls and their attempts to start a punk rock band.
Bobo (Mira Barkhammar) is 13 years old and is insecure in her looks. Attracted to her best friend, Karla (Mira Grosin)'s brother Linus, Bobo is starting to notice boys and particularly the fact that they do not notice her. She is a little shy and reserved, especially in the company of Karla, who does not shy away from speaking her opinions. When the girls are bullied by members of the band, Iron Fist, and have an argument with their PE teacher, they write a punk song about the triviality of sports in respect to the suffering of kids in 3rd world countries. They plan to play their song during a school talent show but are turned away for applying too late. However, it is during the show they meet and recruit the musically talented, Hedvig (Liv LeMoyne). Hedvig is an outcast due her religious beliefs. Initially, she and Karla clash over those views.
The movie explores the topic of acceptance. Bobo and Karla are not accepted by their peers, which they do not seem to mind. The spend most of their time together, either at Karla’s house (her parents are cooler) or at the local youth center. They gather strength from their friendship; however, that friendship is tested as the girls start forming relationships with boys. Karla can definitely be seen as the leader of the group. Bobo starts to resent Karla deciding and dictating everything that the pair does. Hedvig was an interesting character to help balance out the polar opposites that Bobo and Karla represent and also to challenge some of their own beliefs. While Bobo and Karla fight against their peers’ lack of understanding, the pair actually treat Hedvig in the same manner by forcing her to become more like them. In uncomfortable scene with Hedvig’s mother, the pair realizes the extent of their form of peer pressure.
We Are the Best! is a funny coming of age movie with a great soundtrack. I enjoyed the character development throughout the film as well as the soundtrack. Magnolia Pictures has the US distribution rights for the film and it is scheduled to be released on May 30th in select cities.
