View Full Version : New Reviews Area

Quick announcement: I've reworked the Reviews area (http://www.movieforums.com/reviews), so now it runs completely off of the forums. You can also now see the most prolific reviewers and filter by author, movie, and rating, with the author and movie fields using autocomplete. And virtually all reviews will automatically feature artwork from the film.

This change has been necessary for awhile, given my sporadic review writing, and the tremendous growth in both quantity and quality in the reviews you guys have been posting.

A couple quick things to note:

1) We've got a backlog of reviews to tag, so don't worry if we haven't gotten to one (or even most) of yours yet. So a few of you with very few reviews tagged will probably end up on the Top Reviewers list before long. So give us a few weeks before bringing any to our attention, because we'll probably get quite a few of them by then.

2) Right now the featured review is based on the film's release date (with some minor thumb-scaling), rather than the time the review was posted, as I think this will generally be what visitors are looking for. But to make sure we get a good mix, there are a handful of reviews of Pre-2000 films off to the right. I'm open to changing this around a bit, but I think this makes for a decent mix that both keeps the page up-to-date without burying all the reviews of older films so many MoFos like to do.
Oh, and I've added a corresponding Reviews tab (http://www.movieforums.com/community/member.php?u=1&tab=reviews#tabs) to user profiles, as well. :)

Short-term priorities are for the Mods and I to start tagging reviews like mad, and adding some moderate styling to any posts that are tagged as a review.

Long-term, I have plenty of other ideas for this section, but I think it's already a significant improvement. And I really want to see how people use it over time before deciding which things to emphasize.

Enjoy. :)

Looks erotic!
Oh good. I was really hoping the latent eroticism of the review filter would come through.

Cool! It makes me feel like I should make the effort to actually write some reviews again.

Quick update: because we get a rush of reviews of the same film when a major release comes out, I'm gonna see if I can fiddle with elegant ways to consolidate them, so others don't get pushed out. This'll definitely be an ongoing process, so we can all just sort of see what feels right over time. :) Until then, you guys may see some occasional changes in what shows up on the main page.

Absolutely! :) You totally should.

Quick update: when we relaunched this area, we had about 1,800 reviews tagged from all the years prior since we started tagging posts. In the weeks that followed this relaunch, that more than doubled! We now have over 4,200 reviews!

Huge thanks to the mods for helping me tag these, with a special nod to Dave for going completely nuts.

Pretty shortly I'll be making it so that posts tagged as reviews are styled a little differently, which will help you guys to see them easily. It should both draw more attention to them, and allow the community as a whole to help us track down stray unmarked reviews.
