These are the films that age by age, have shaped my personal tastes in my movie going life...
Year by year, I have combed what I saw and when, and have compiled what make the Cinephile I am and why, and gives me the tastes I have In films...
All of the following are made up of the films that made a mark on me, in one way or another and shaped me into the Fan I am today.

50. Superman II
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/36/Superman_II.jpg
Age Seen: 1-2 maybe 3 on VHS, recorded off the TV
Possibly the first film I ever saw, in fact… I clearly remember having a boyhood crush on Margot Kidder as the damsel in distress and thought Reeve as the invincible Hero was the most magnificent thing I’d ever seen.
49. Superman: The Movie
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/6d/Superman_ver1.jpg
Age Seen: 1-2 maybe 3 on VHS, recorded off the TV
Along with Superman II, this is probably the second film I ever saw. I remember seeing this after Superman II, but not long afterward.

48. Ghostbusters
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/c7/Ghostbusters_cover.png
Age Seen: 3 on hired VHS
I remember my Dad coming home with the brand new video from the shop when he got back from work… and we all watched it as a family after we’d had dinner.
Completely engrossed at the Proton Packs and the Ghosts that flew around and then, a great big Marshmallow Man. Everything a 3 year old would want.
47. Gremlins
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/3d/Gremlins1.jpg
Age Seen: 3 on hired VHS
Another my Dad got on video when it was released… I can remember my Mum not being too happy but I was allowed to watch regardless. Loved Gizmo but found the Gremlins hilarious and scary at the same time. Probably the first horror I ever saw as well. Loved it though.

Cheers, Slob! As you can guess these are my first to modern day movies :)
46. The Karate Kid (1984)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a9/Karate_kid.jpg
Age Seen: 3 on VHS at a friend’s house
Thought Wax On Wax Off was the funniest thing I’d ever seen. My friend and I then went outside and kicked 7 bells of sh*t out of each other quoting lines from the film.
45. Poltergeist
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/43/Poltergeistposter.jpg
Age Seen: 3 on TV
Was allowed to stay up late one night, probably a weekend… remember being scared out of my socks but had a crush on Heather O’Rourke, she was older than me at that age after all
Remember it opening my eyes to a more serious side of Ghosts after Ghostbusters had made me laugh so much.

Two more classics there. This list is gonna be good, as long as Young Guns appears soon. ;)

44. Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/10/Indiana_Jones_and_the_Temple_of_Doom_PosterB.jpg
Age Seen: 3 on VHS recorded off the TV
Remember my Dad and I watching this one night. Bit of a boys’ night in and we sat and had ice-cream while watching. Very clear memories of watching this one for the first time. Loved it.
43. Jaws
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/eb/JAWS_Movie_poster.jpg
Age Seen: 3 on VHS, not sure if hired or recorded
A family movie night again for this one. My Mum has recently told me that I wouldn’t go in the bath afterward though.
I remember the film, just can’t remember refusing to get in the bath though.

42. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/3c/SW_-_Empire_Strikes_Back.jpg
Age Seen: 3 on VHS
Watched this with my 3 older Brothers. They borrowed it from a friend of theirs… I hadn’t seen the original film as I was so young, but they obviously had, and I clearly remember the 3 of them freaking out when Vader delivers his bombshell. I was more interested in the Lightsabers and R2D2.
41. TRON
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/17/Tron_poster.jpg
Age Seen: 4 on TV
Had absolutely no idea what was going on, but I was fixed to the screen hoping for more of those funny motorbikes, which never came. Loved the effects though, colourful enough to keep me watching.
That's it now till tomorrow :D...

40. Howard The Duck
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/7f/Howard_the_Duck_%281986%29.jpg
Age Seen: 4 at the Cinema
My first ever Cinema experience.
Went to see it with my Sister and our two Friends, the same friend in fact that I saw The Karate Kid with whom I ended up kicking the crap out of.
Lea Thompson made confusing things (for a 4 year old) happen in my underwear and I loved the fact that the Hero was a talking Duck and there was a scary monster in it as well.
39. The Thing
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/c1/ThingPoster.jpg
Age Seen: 4 on VHS, not sure if recorded or hired
Scared the socks off me again. My Dad was weary about it but gave in eventually. Loved the weird creatures even though I didn’t really know what was going on.

Age Seen: 4 on hired VHS
Hired from the shop by my Dad again. Absolutely loved the adventure with kids from start to end and the truffle shuffle and Sloth were definitely the best things I’d ever seen. I wanted to be in that gang.
37. Back To The Future
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d2/Back_to_the_Future.jpg
Age Seen: 5 on hired VHS
Another I fell in love with from the start. Flashy effects on a cool looking car with weird doors and a skateboard riding cool kid…

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VWdrdDtWMBY/TdgZng58Y9I/AAAAAAAAGk0/BSL2bb39Ypk/s320/Ghoulies+2.jpg
Age Seen: 6 on hired VHS
Wasn’t allowed to see this on the night as it was way past bedtime when the family sat to watch it.
But I remember my Mum letting me sit in the living room at about 7am while I was eating my breakfast at the coffee table and I watched it before I went to school.
Didn’t quite know what it was all about but still, monsters in a fairground that pull a Clown’s arm off stayed with me for a while.
35. RoboCop
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/50/Robocop_film.jpg
Age Seen: 7 on VHS at my Brother’s house
Wanted to see this when I saw trailers for it but was too young.
So during a visit to my Brother’s place when he was on leave from the RAF, it was just him and me as Mum had gone out shopping with my Sister and my Brother’s Wife… and he put it on and the two of us sat with a load of junkfood, crisps, biscuits and fizzy drinks.
Best time ever. Greatest film ever.

34. Honey, I Shrunk The Kids
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/4b/Honey_I_Shrunk_the_kids.jpg
Age Seen: 7 at the Cinema
My second ever Cinema experience.
Wanted to watch Ghostbusters 2 as it was also on at the cinema… but my Mum and Stepdad had already bought tickets for this one. Was seriously taken back by it too.
Was an olde Cinema experience too where at the halfway point, there was an intermission and great big maroon coloured curtains dropped down over the screen so people can get more popcorn and go to the toilet. Magical night out with my folks.
33. The Lost Boys
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/b6/Lost_boys.jpg
Age Seen: 7 on VHS recorded off the TV
My first Vampire film. My Dad was worried about this one and actually told me to leave the room when the Bonfire Scene was about to start. Which added more mystery to the film for me… still loved it though, and thought Corey Feldman and Corey Haim were the coolest kids in the world.
The Rodent

32. Aliens
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/fb/Aliens_poster.jpg
Age Seen: 7 on VHS recorded off the TV
One of many that my Dad had in his video cupboard. Nothing was on TV so we put this on.
Blew me away and made me fall in love with Sigourney Weaver. Guns, Soldiers, Aliens, space and explosions. Everything a 7 year old boy needs.
31. The Fly (1986)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/aa/Fly_poster.jpg
Age Seen: 8 on TV
I remember hearing lots about this one, and one night it was on TV. So I stayed up in bed making sure I didn’t fall asleep. Watched it with headphones on too with a load of snacks.
Best midnight feast ever.

You should just list every movie you've ever seen, in order, since you were born.
The Rodent
05-06-14, 07:13 PM
I tried that a few weeks back... too much hassle listing every film I've ever seen. I got to about 1000 or so I think, but there were so many that kept cropping up that I'd forgotten about, I just gave up writing the list :D

Well, then just loosen up and don't try to be so orderly. Create a thread about remembering all the movies you've seen, when you saw them, etc. -- whenever it comes to you. Whenever you remember. Jot it down.

30. Critters
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/2d/Crittersposter.jpg
Age Seen: 8 on VHS recorded off the TV
My Dad had this for ages in his video cabinet and one night we had fish and chips and he told me to pick a film to watch.
This was the one.
After that, fish and chips while watching Critters became a once monthly thing for the two of us.
29. Lethal Weapon
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d9/Lethal_weapon1.jpg
Age Seen: 8 on TV
Saw this one weekend when it was on and my folks weren’t about. They were part of a boating club so every now and then I was left to my own devices and would watch nonstop films. This was one that stuck with me.

28. The Shining
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/25/The_Shining_poster.jpg
Age Seen: 8 on TV
The one thing that stuck out was the maze chase at the end. That sequence stayed with me for a long time but the film as a whole made me realise that there are some very serious horrors out there and made me a fan of Nicholson.
27. Little Shop Of Horrors (1986)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/5b/Little_shop_of_horrors.jpg
Age Seen: 8 on VHS recorded off the TV
Tons of fun and I loved the talking plant. In later years I’ve come to respect the puppetry work but back when I was 8, I thought this was the best animatronic film I’d ever seen.
Used to sing along with it as well and showed me that Musicals aren't all a load of rubbish.

05-07-14, 08:25 AM
26. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/e2/TMNTMoviePoster.jpg
Age Seen: 8 on hired VHS
Huge Turtles fan from day one, had all the toys and games, even wallpaper… but I was never allowed to see the live action film at the cinema. Not sure why but Mum kept saying no. So when it was released on VHS I hired it.
Blew me away and cemented me as a Turtles Fan forever.
25. Willow
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/7b/Willow_movie.jpg
Age Seen: 8 on VHS recorded off the TV
After becoming a fan of fantasy world style films through Star Wars and TRON, Willow blew my socks off.
The swords and sorcery aspect of the film was, I think, the first time I’d ever actually seen that sort of thing outside of a Dungeons And Dragons board.
The Rodent

24. Terminator 2: Judgment Day
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/85/Terminator2poster.jpg
Age Seen: 9 on hired VHS
I hadn’t seen the first Terminator film, but when T2 came out, I heard loads of good stuff and watched it at a friend’s house. Absolutely loved it and the effects used showed me what was possible in films now… definitely the most exciting prospect of my movie going life so far: The endless possibilities that lay ahead because of CGI.
23. Total Recall
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/f9/Total_recall.jpg
Age Seen: 9 on VHS borrowed from a friend
My Dad and I watched this for the first time together. We both thought it was great and became, along with Critters, a favourite of ours to sit and watch together while eating junk food.
The Rodent

22. Tremors
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/33/Tremorsposter.jpg
Age Seen: 9 on TV
The TV kept playing trailers for this on BBC1 with a “coming soon” voiceover. So I begged my Mum to let me sit up and watch it. She allowed it and having a late night on a school night while watching a damned funny and scary film made it even better.
Kevin Bacon as “Valentine” became like a role model for me too. He was just super cool. I’ve ended up more like Fred Ward’s “Earl” though.
21. Big Trouble In Little China
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/76/Big_Trouble_in_Little_China_Film_Poster.jpg
Age Seen: 9 on TV and on borrowed VHS
I got in so much trouble for this one. I wanted to see it when it was shown on TV but it was after bedtime, so I did the same as I did with The Fly and stayed awake. But I got caught and ended up with my Stepdad removing the aerial sock from my TV :D
Managed to get the VHS from a friend a couple days later and fell in love with it.

Tbh, my parents made their own choices regardless of what was on the box. Most of mine as you can see are recorded VHS tapes... so most of the time my Mum was pretty blind to what the films were rated.
My parents always had the mindset of "let them make their own mistakes" so basically I had a free reign on certain things :D
I think my Mum always knew that there are worse things than a few movies out there so she wasn't too bothered about enforcing films. My Dad always spoiled me anyway so basically I could watch whatever I liked when I was at his house :D
Glad my list is working out though :)

Age Seen: 10 on VHS recorded off the TV
About 3 months after Young Guns II had been on, the same channel showed this. Being a fan of the second film and never really having seen this one, I immediately set the VHS Player to record.
Definitely the most influential film as it got me into the Western genre and got me studying history too.
Since then, studying history, YG 2 grew out of favour with me but it’s still the film that made me a fan of the original and changed me into a Lincoln County War Historian… the original which took up a big part of my life and I have seen over 2,500 times since.
17. The Dark Crystal

Caught this one by accident.
I think the more mature movie-goer in me that was developing, was touched upon by the talkative nature of the film and also I was a fan of Estevez after seeing Young Guns and Young Guns 2 plus a few others of his.
Took me back though with how good it really is and opened my eyes to the more independent films that aren’t just all action and explosions but could still be great in terms of the fantasy side of things.
11. Saving Private Ryan

Disturbed me and also entertained me at the same time. I was always a fan of Spielberg but SPR let me see how great this guy really could be and the film itself made me a fan of War Films. Before SPR, I hadn’t seen a great many WWII films, or even any War Films for that matter.

Yeah, Alien 3 is heavily underrated. It's in my Top 10 along with Predator... and probably always will be.

Saw Jurassic Park at the movies and was bored. Or, I dunno, maybe at the time I walked away liking it, but the film never stuck with me. Never saw the sequels. Probably won't even see Jurassic World.
And Alien 3 is not as good as Aliens. I think you guys just like it because it's got lots of British people in it.

13. Independence Day

Age Seen: 14 at the cinema
Yet again, watching a special effects Blockbuster on the big screen cemented me as a fan of Sci-Fi and epic action. The film has never been the same since though as th4e big screen experience was simply breath-taking.
I remember thinking this was the best movie ever made after I saw it at the movies. I was 12, going on 13.

Yeah, ID4 on the big screen is immense.
I watched it not long ago on the laptop... the forced perspective makes the screen look 7ft wide... with headphones as well makes it even better.

I can still remember seeing it at the movies. It was something.
The '90s had a lot of great movies, almost like the '80s.
WHICH IS WHY THE MOVIE FORUMS '90s LIST IS A SHAM. AN ABSOLUTE SHAM. DISGUSTING! INAUTHENTIC!

I may put up my Top 10 a bit earlier than tomorrow.
I'll leave it till later though rather than having tons of info in a short space.
That last one at #11 being age 16...
10 is age 17, with #1 being age 30.
I like this list. It's been fun for me to work it all out and is pretty nostalgic to read over it now it's completed and I can see how my tastes have been shaped over the years into the Sci-Fi and Fantasy lover I've become.

In a few hours :)
I'll let people read over 20-11.
Put a lot of thought into this list.
Took me a few hours to think about my viewing experiences as I've aged.
I've mostly gotten the ages right through remembering where I was when I saw them. I was up and down the Country when I was a kid and have been able to gauge when I saw these films depending on the company I had or the surroundings I was in.
The cinema ones were easy though.
The original list I made had about 100... but I whittled it down to the ones I remember most and did the write-ups.
There's a few I've missed and forgotten and deleted, but that was the point... these are the 50 that have stayed with me since I first ever started watching movies... in order of viewing too rather than order of favourites or preferences.

Alien 3 was my favourite of the series. Not sure if that'd be the case now simply because I liked Alien a lot more than I used to, though it's still only at the OK level. I'd have to watch the third one again to decide.
BTW, SC, Alien 3 is better than Aliens because Aliens is ****. It's quite simple really and has nothing to do with patriotism.

14. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/fa/Star_Trek_VI-poster.png
Age Seen: 13 on VHS
I’d seen the other Treks that came before this one, but had never been a huge fan as I was more Star Wars than Trek. My Dad’s video of Trek VI though showed me how much “mental” fun a Trek film could be and turned me into a fan of the franchise.
oh wait, i still haven't seen this movie
seen Wrath of Khan, Search for Spock (yegh), the Voyage Home (loved it),
& been busy watching the Original Series for the first time, getting towards the end of season 2
you've mentioned a lot of awesome movies Rodent, including Big Trouble in Little China, one of my favorite movies to quote!

10. Starship Troopers
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/df/Starship_Troopers_-_movie_poster.jpg
Age Seen: 17 on hired VHS
The shop had a few posters of this one in the window and I saw it was directed by Verhoeven.
Being a lover of RoboCop and Total Recall I gave it a go.
Yet again, a film that showed me what was possible with CGI and cemented me as a Verhoeven Fanboy. After this film, I made sure I saw every film from his back-catalogue.
09. Signs
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/08/The_Signs_movie.jpg
Age Seen: 20 at the cinema
The first film I saw in the cinema that utilises bump-in-the-night style scares mixed with Sci-Fi. On the big screen though it gave me an unforgettable experience and made me a fan of more psychological films. The Sci-Fi side of it appealed to me as well.

08. The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/ad/Lord_of_the_Rings_-_The_Two_Towers.jpg
Age Seen: 20 at the cinema
I hadn’t had the chance to see Fellowship at the cinema but caught it on DVD and loved it. So I made the effort to see Towers at the cinema.
Needless to say, the experience was awesome and I became a huge fan of Tolkien… even going out the day after seeing the film and buying the entire catalogue of his works. Cost a fortune though :D
The thing with this one though, is that after the Swords And Sorcery and olde worlde fantasy of Willow and The Dark Crystal, LOTR is the original and best and couldn’t have been put to screen better than this… which is why it blew me away so much.
07. Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/0e/Pirates_of_the_Caribbean_movie.jpg
Age Seen: 23 at the cinema
Had been hearing loads about this from my Girlfriend at the time as she’d already seen it, so we went to see it together.
Soo much fun, and brought me back into being a fan of more humorous action films after becoming quite wrapped up in darker films like Alien 3 and the likes of Se7en, 12 Monkeys, even Blade Runner and so on… and it made me a fan of Depp too.

06. Batman Begins
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/af/Batman_Begins_Poster.jpg
Age Seen: 24 on DVD
Didn’t see this at the cinema but after hearing a load of good things about it, I bought the DVD without seeing it first.
Fell in love immediately and was pretty much the first film I saw that combined fantasy with real-life logic… which was something I didn’t think I’d ever see until it happened.
05. The Mist
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a1/The_Mist_poster.jpg
Age Seen: 27 on DVD
Mainly through being a fan of King andseeingthat it was a King-Darabont collaboration (Shawshank was excellent), I bought this on DVD without knowing much about it but it showed me that films, even after all these years, can still surprise me in shocking ways. Definitely a favourite as well these days.

04. The Dark Knight
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/8a/Dark_Knight.jpg
Age Seen: 27 at the cinema
After Batman Begins made its impression, I made a point of seeing this and wasn’t disappointed. Like with The Mist, it showed me that I could actually get shocked by a film and Heath Ledger’s Joker did just that. By this point, I was becoming a Batfan too and TDK started to really hammer home my interest in other Superhero films other than just Reeve as Superman.
03. TRON Legacy
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/c2/Tron_Legacy_poster.jpg
Age Seen: 28 on DVD
One of the few sequels that is on a par with the original and let me see that genuine cinematic experiences weren’t dead after all.
I’d been becoming disillusioned with films of late with exception to Nolan’s Batfilms… but Legacy brought back my enthusiasm for movies that had started to die off over the past 2 or 3 years.
02. The Dark Knight Rises
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/83/Dark_knight_rises_poster.jpg
Age Seen: 30 at the cinema
By this point, I had become a MoFo, and had been a MoFo for about 6 months, broadening my horizons on the site and becoming a more solid and rounded Cinephile too (thanks guys!).
Nolan showed me one thing though… that a film series could end strongly. Cemented me as a Batfan too and gave me a new selection of films to look out for with Nolan’s back-catalogue.

01. Dredd
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/16/Dredd2012Poster.jpg
Age Seen: 30 on DVD
I didn’t see this at the cinema due to the poor marketing and being shown only in the scam that is 3D at my local crappy cinema… but the film was revered by audiences and spurned me into blindly buying the DVD.
Immediately it became my #2 film of all time, second only to RoboCop, basically giving me a new favourite, a yet another new lease of life in my mentality toward movies after TRON Legacy did the same thing, brought back my interest in simply written action flicks after The Dark Knight Trilogy gave me action with relatively complex writing.
Dredd also showed me that the 18 rated spectacular wasn’t dead after all.
So that’s it. Birth-30… the films that make me the Cinephile I am today at the age of 32.

So you're thirty-two and your taste in movies is still the same as when you were three. :D
The Rodent
05-08-14, 11:44 PM
It's close, but I wouldn't say my actual tastes are the same. I loved Superman and still do, but was into a lot of cartoons like Disney etc when I was young. Dumbo was a favourite.
These films are really the ones that made a mark on me and shaped my tastes into something better than just watching kid-friendly cartoons all my life or rubbish like a lot of the crap that people are into these days.
I think a better term for these films is "influential".
I wouldn't say that Ghostbusters and The Karate Kid are the same as Dredd though :D

I still love a lot of films I saw as a kid. I saw a lot of insane, very R rated stuff, horror movies, stuff like Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the Hellraiser films.
The Rodent
05-09-14, 12:20 AM
I think I was about 8 or 9 when I saw Chainsaw, about the same age with Hellraiser too... they never really made much of an impression on me until later life though.
Another was Elm Street. I saw that when I was 7, yet it didn't do anything for me. It was only in later life, late teens, that I saw it again and liked it.
