I can't believe this but while working today at Cinemark Legacy, a shipment came in.
No, posters or standees but a machine that sells DVDs. Yes that's right....Digital Video Discs. All new releases and others.
(Oh, by the way, CDs too! :yup: )

I couldn't believe it, though I am not quite sure how much they will be. The machine will be stocked this weekend - I'll find out then.

Cool eh? :D

I'd be scared to pay a machine to give me a DVD. Does it spit them to the bottom like a candy bar machine? Oh, I'd be scared.

I'd just hate having to put in all those quarters.;)

I wonder if the machines are privately owned, or owned by the theater. Interesting.

Yeah it does..... . When dropped, it lands on a cushiony bottom. :D

There is no money insertion. The theater offers a card to insert with money put on it. The card is itself is inserted, and the DVD/CD is purchased.

I'm seeing Just Married tomorrow so I'll tell ya how much when I get home.

That's downright hilarious. What a weird idea. Next thing you know, they'll be one of those games with the mechanical claw that will give you two tries to pick up a DVD.

What's pretty interesting is the fact these machines are expanding all over.

Yeah. I saw photos of a full on convinience store vending machine in Washington, I think it was. Just a line of people waiting so they could insert their credit card, type in their selections, and walk off with baked beans and loafs of bread. All sort. Really bizarre.

Hmm… interesting… so are the DVD/CD’s any cheaper?

I think he knows what you're talking about.

No, Jason, my friend. It just so happens that Jrs is right: I am retarded.

I knew it!
Since my arrival to this site I've been sending PM's about that very topic, Matt, and now that you've come clean, my existance is validated.

HEH...HEH... :indifferent:

It would be so cool if you could kick the machine in some way and DVDs wouldn't stop coming out. That happened to me once with a Coke machine -- that thing gave me FOUR free Cokes! The 20 oz kind.

On the downside, what if it spits out the wrong movie? Say in a few months, you buy "Lord of the Rings: Two Towers" using the weird DVD vending machine, and it spits out "The Hot Chick" or "Weekend at Bernie's 2"? Or what if after paying $20, sticking the card into the machine, and pressing a button to select your DVD -- nothing comes out because IT'S OUT OF THAT SELECTION. What do you then?

These vending machines are a freaky concept. They should have vending machines with prostitutes inside! Prostitute CLONES. Do you want Veronica, Ilsa, Babette, Rachel, or Tijuana?

You know Jason I'm beginning to think you could get work as a certified genius at one of these vending machine companies. I'm sure your ideas would be embraced warmly and with open arms.

:yup:

When choosing a DVD/CD, inserting the card, and making the choice the product will come out followed by your receipt. If the previous two mentionings occur, the theater will place the money back onto the card.

What exactly does this machine look like? You know how the soda machines have a hard covering over it with either a poster for COKE or PEPSI on the front? What kind of poster does this thing have? What do the buttons look like? Are they big or small? Do they have pictures of the DVDs on them or just the names? How many selections are there? Is it really tall or wide? Or, is it kinda like candy vending machines where you can see what's stocked up inside through the glass? And how big is this cushiony bottom (you know, that sounds kinda sexy)?

Also, could they be themed? Such as, during the month of October, the machines only sell scary movies? Christmas movies during December? Dumbass romantic comedies during February?

Oh, and I have another question for ya....

Do you have big feet?

I would imagine it is the sort of machine that has the little red light display and you click in the corresponding number.

"Titanic, eh...? C...7... C7."
Ka-chunk!
"Ah!"

With the machine already to be used, and everything set, a change has occured. The CDs were taken out to make room for all DVDs.
1. The machine is about 7' tall.
2. Wide enough to hold what it needs to hold.
3. You can see through the front - the DVDs are visible.
4. The cushiony bottom covers the entire surface below.
5. The buttons are kinda like what SB said... except its not A2
or D6, but its something like DVD 6 or DVD 21 etc..
6. 23 selections.
7. There are posters on the sides with pics and words of whats inside the machine.
8. It is non-themed.

PLUS - What's cool is that there is a mini monitor that plays movie trailers of all the movies that are there.

These are the titles :

Lord of the Rings : Fellowship of the Ring
Goldmember
Scooby Doo
Harry Potter and the Sorcer's Stone
Pluto Nash
Sum of all Fears
Grease
Goldeneye
Tomorrow Never Dies
Barbershop
Producers
Spiderman
Stuart Little 2
Signs
XXX
Barbie (for kids obviously)
It's a Wonderful Life
Hey Arnold!
K19
Footloose
Ice Age
Like Mike
Shallow Hal

New releases will be stocked when come out.

Oh, and the answer to the last question is no.
