The same rules for the movie lists are what we are using here:
Submit your ranked list of twenty-five titles, numbered 1-25 with no ties, to me via a private message with the title "[Your Username] - MoFo ‘TV List".
Series will be awarded points as follows: 25 points for 1st place, 24 points for 2nd place, 23 for 3rd and so on, all the way down to one point for your 25th placed series.
New members can send in a list as soon as they've been a member here for one month. This measure is taken so that the list isn't jerry-rigged by people who have been here for a week, and then disappear.
I am using IMDb for reference points, so anything listed as a TV series or miniseries is eligible
Make sure you are specific about which series you are voting for. For example: Specify between American or British Office. Each of the Blackadder series are listed separately so make sure to use the number. Dr. Who has two IMDb entries, so specify whether it's the older one or the newer one. If you have the titled with the year the show started it would be helpful.
Anyone who reveals their list before the countdown has ended will be disqualified.
The deadline for entries is September 30, 2014. That's two months after the 70s countdown. Plenty of time to review favorites, discover new ones, and order a list.
You have plenty of time to consider and submit your list, so no changing it once you've submitted it to me.
I will add some graphics if somebody wants to help me out here.
**** Even though it's not listed as a miniseries on IMDb, I am considering Fanny & Alexander eligible for this list since it was conceived as a television series. ****

Each Blackadder counts as a separate series? Fantastic!
Sweet. If you have not watched The Shield, get on it folks. Should be top 10 easy.
Are current series required to have a certain number of seasons? I am thinking of Game Of Thrones specifically.

What is Blackadder exactly MV? I noticed you had a few of those characters in the comedy tourney. Could I find it easy? Im wondering if I should watch it before submitting my list. Im also considering Deadwood. I may finish Dexter, the first three seasons of that show is amazing but it lost steam and I didn't finish the final three seasons.Any other suggestions MoFos?
Just made a speculative list, but I'm going to let it breath for a little while so I don't regret it like I do my Comic Book Movies list. The top 15 are pretty secure though.

Not sure where you're located, but it's available on Netflix streaming.
It's a British comedy series from the 80s that lasted four seasons, but each season is different from the rest.
The first series, from 1983, is set in medieval England, where Rowan Atkinson's Edmund is the bumbling, idiotic but scheming Duke of Edinburgh. Unfortunately, they didn't quite get it right with the first of the series and I advise all Blackadder virgins to skip this first season - either entirely or go back to it after watching the rest.
Blackadder II (1986), my favorite, sees a new Edmund Blackadder try to weasel his way into Queen Elizabeth's favor and into as much cash as possible, while making hilariously snide comments about the idiocy of those around him.
Blackadder the Third (1987) sees yet another in the line of Edmund Blackadders serving as butler to the idiotic, foppish Prince George (played by Hugh Laurie of House, M.D. fame). Mr. E. Blackadder spends his time trying to make, steal, or marry into piles of cash, abusing his dogsbody Baldrick, and making fun of everything French.
Blackadder Goes Forth (1989) sees yet another Edmund Blackadder - now a Captain in the British Army stuck in the trenches of the first World War. This Blackadder spends his time avoiding orders, shooting and eating General Melchett's beloved pet pigeon, Speckled Jim (and getting court marshalled for it), identifying German spies, entertaining the masses by producing slug balancing and Gorgeous Georgina acts, making fun of Charlie Chaplin, and basically trying not to die.
There's also a one-off reunion special from 1999 that features a modern day Blackadder who builds a time machine in order to impress his friends and win a bet. Only what was supposed to be trickery turned out to be a working time machine. He drifts through time and visits all of the previous incarnations, plus some pretty hilarious new ones.
Sounds a lot like Monte Python. Dont know why I haven't heard of it. Ill give it a go since its on Netflix. Thanks for the rundown.

Don't roll your eyes :( You need to watch it again, consistently, without many breaks. Last time you watched it you never really got into it or looked forward to the next episode I don't think, and it took you ages just to finish season one (if you did). Watch as many as you can, as quick as you can. Try and watch the first season in a day or two, you have to like it :(
But yeh, hopefully it wins, don't know if it will though, it's loved by those who have seen it but not everyone has. Breaking Bad will probably take the prize.

I'm not really into to binge - watching shows though, I think that's what makes a TV series so special, looking forward to watching the next one in a couple of days (or months waiting for a new season). I watched all of season 1 except the second half of the last episode.

3 seasons before it was cancelled :( . Made from the same guy who made Justified, but i'd say i prefer Deadwood.
Deadwood and Justified were made by different people; David Milch and Graham Yost, respectively. They mainly just have Timothy Olyphant and a Western sensibility in common, I think, though I seem to recall a few other casting overlaps.

Twin Peaks will probably be very high on my list. I am not a David Lynch freak or anything allow I do fancy some of his movies. The acting of Kyle MacLachlan actually is what impressed me the most. His portrayal as Special Agent Dale cooper was terrific and pretty much made the show. If u have ever watched Fire Walk With Me Chris Issac(by the way was a huge casting mistake) could not even come close to the on screen charisma Coop had.

Same here, I don't know if I want to put it on my list or not, considering most of it isn't very good. I only like seasons 1, 2 and 4. But, I was really into it for a while, and watched religiously from season 4 to the end.

I repped it. There was a time in my life when I didnt miss MNF. The Michaels, Gifford, and Dierdorf years. I remember the first time Hank Williams sang the song that would go on to be a parody of itself. Then it seemed cool though, sports casts were not doing that kind of stuff. Three great series indeed. I had those in consideration for my list. Dexter is complicated as well, I watched it's first four seasons and loved it but it's quality declined abruptly indeed. Same thing with Babylon 5, the first four seasons are pure gold and the fifth one is pure filler.

There are two basic types of TV series:
1 - Series that have a beginning a middle and an end. Basically, like a film or novel. A series that has literary quality. Examples? Band of Brothers, Babylon 5, Breaking Bad, most anime series, etc.
2 - Series which consist of a sequence of unconnected episodes and don't require that the viewer has watched the earlier episodes in order to get into the show in the middle. Examples? The Simpsons, Seinfeld, Cowboy Bebop, House, etc.
There are series in the middle ground as well, such as Buffy, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones with are focused on season arcs (Game of Thrones is a series of novels actually).
I prefer the 1st type of the latter. In fact, I have only included 1 mostly episodic series in my top 25 list. I like the idea of a TV series that fully explores the potential of having a longer running time than a movie, in order to create a more complex world and characters.
Instead, most TV fail to explore their potential and become simple repetitive episodic stuff. The best ones are the series that play out like a novel, my favorite English series for instance, is the English series that was written in the most rigorous fashion to play out like a novel.
I have added more anime series than Brazilian or English language series mainly because of that literary factor (also because I know more anime series than English series, since they are short it's easy to watch many: I watched 200 anime series over the past 3 years). In fact, all my favorite anime series are single season long and were either adapted from a novel (or manga) or adapted into a novel.

I haven't kept up with the show for a while but I do hope he gets some consideration. His show is absolutely unique among late night talk shows, and he's the only one who's actually funny, except maybe Conan, who still doesn't come close. He just goes and messes around for an hour each night and 95% of the time it's hilarious. He has some actually chemistry with his guests, too, and doesn't ask those inane questions like the rest of late night hosts. He sits down and has a real conversation with them.

Splitting Blackadder up into four different entries does seem a little unfair, but then again if everyone who wants to vote for the series as a whole just votes for II as a representative then it might even out just fine. I imagine most people would pick II as their favourite anyway.

Not sure if they're quite what you're looking for, but I can't recommend Garth Marenghi's Dark Place highly enough. I'd also put forward Kolchak: The Night Stalker and you might want to take a look at Hammer House Of Horror and The Tales Of The Unexpected.

This. The Wire takes a long time to get into, but it really is the most complex TV series ever made. Its like one massive novel. Season 4 in particular is one of the greatest, most important seasons of TV ever.

I completely forgot about Rizzoli and Isles! I can't believe it! I love that show! See what happens when a show is between seasons! It's like me forgetting to put Man of Steel on my Comic Movie list!
Definitely not run-of-the-mill in any sense.
The first couple of episodes I watched were definitely exactly that. A plain old murder mystery with a police procedural. The stark production might have been groundbreaking at the time, but it certainly isn't now.
I like the comment comparing it to a novel, and it makes me want to watch another couple of episodes, which I might go ahead and do, but when I consider how Breaking Bad just grabbed hold of me and shook me around with its (superior) writing and production, when I didn't even like the premise of the show to begin with, I just didn't see the allure of The Wire after 3 episodes. If it takes a while to get off the ground, I will certainly give a few more episodes a shot. The people touting the show here on MoFo are people I tend to respect. So far though - show isn't that great, IMO.
The thing is, we are in the golden age of the TV drama, and perhaps The Wire was on the vanguard of that movement, but for instance, the first few episodes of True Detective blow away what I saw of The Wire in pretty much every way.
I don't think The Wire was bad! It just didn't seem up to the level of some of the other shows I would consider for the top 10 of this list.
That said, I will do up another few episodes, giving it a bit more time to grab me. :)

the wire is about a sequence of failed social experiments run throughout various portions of a single city. it chooses to be boring and unsatisfying ("realistic") in aesthetic to disguise its fundamental idealism. ultimately, the wire is about introducing new possibilities for addressing societal ills within existing institutions. it is a work of science fiction for social science instead of rocket science.

The Wire is just a staggering work. So many great staring-at-the-screen-just-shaking-your-head moments. Breaking Bad was fun and is probably the best looking non HBO show; but it's too goofy to put it in the same class. Breaking Bad is like The Wire if every character on The Wire was Brother Mouzone.

So are we voting for any TV show here, like non fiction and fiction, game shows, sport shows or anything?
Personally I think there should perhaps be 2 separate top 100's here, one for all fictional shows such as Sopranos, Breaking Bad etc and another top 100 for basically every other TV show, documentaries, game shows, sport etc.
Just a suggestion. It's going to be weird comprising a top 25 of anything that's ever been on TV.

No weirder than doing the same for all films. I think two separate top 100s would be pretty pointless, especially given that television only comprises a small percentage of the discussion that actually takes place on these forums anyway. TV is TV.

I'd love to participate, but I don't feel knowledgeable enough about television shows to do so. I've never seen a single episode of many of the most critically-acclaimed shows, like The Wire, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Game of Thrones, etc. One of my best friends is a big TV junkie. He owns numerous box-sets, some of which I borrow from time to time, but it just takes so damn long for me to watch 5-6 seasons of a TV show. I'd rather spend that time watching movies.
Personally, I'm hoping that The Sopranos comes out on top or at least finishes in the top three. I borrowed the box-set from my friend last year and just finally finished watching the series a couple of months ago. In terms of sheer quality, no other television show I've seen comes close to it. (And it's also forever changed the way I listen to Journey's "Don't Stop Believing.")
If I participated, though, most of my entries would unfortunately have to be sitcoms and cartoons.

Who says anybody needs to be "knowledgeable" about TV to participate? And since when are sitcoms and cartoons somehow lesser than other programs? Fortunately, only 9 of the shows I submitted are "serious," and many of them were towards the end of the list.

Just submit a list, Captain. I'm with MV, it's your favourites. I've seen most of the 'big critical successes' and few of them will be on my 25. Not because I don't like them, I do, and not because they're not good or good enough, but because I don't love them like I do those that'll make my list. I think this 100 will be pretty diverse simply because I don't think it'll take much to make the list. Well, certainly not the bottom third, anyway.
Captain Spaulding
04-24-14, 06:02 PM
The problem is, I don't even think I could list 25 shows that I truly love. I just don't watch all that much television. I mainly stick to movies and sports. I don't want to negatively influence the list by including shows that I'm not even a big fan of in lieu of shows that are more deserving.
But we'll see. There's still a lot of time left to discover more shows before these lists have to be submitted. I've borrowed Twin Peaks from my friend. Considering how much I admire Lynch's films, I'm sure that's a show that will make my list once I've watched it. If I can make a list of 25 shows I truly love, then I'll participate. Otherwise, I'll be happy to just watch from the bleachers.
[EDIT:] Actually, now that I'm reading what all qualifies, it might not be so difficult for me to put together a list after all. I wasn't thinking about including mini-series or things like The Late Show with David Letterman.

I watched the 1st season. It's a good TV show but was nothing magical for me, though I don't love the genre much I loved Breaking Bad far more (and even Dexter, another crime show). Though that also depends on your age, I think that Dexter is made for younger people while The Wire is made for older people in their 40';s.
So out of the 200 anime series and 70 English speaking series I watched over the past 10 years, I would rate the wire 1st season at the median point. Really wasn't that impressed by it, but I can understand why some people might love it, it's just not my type of TV show.

I would be so cool if Lost beat The Wire in this countdown. One of the two was at least entertaining, I liked the mystery of Lost even though the ending was slightly unsatisfying. It's a show aimed at younger audiences that reflected their optimism and the early 21st century globalized zeitgeist better than almost any other shows. Bates Motel is OK, but as with most of these reboots/cash in's, you have to try and divorce it from the source material. Elementary, Dracula, Hannibal and Bates Motel all suffer from this. I find I have to forget it and watch it as it is. The source material is just a platform and, more importantly from their pov, a way of pulling in a ready made audience.
I ended up thinking of season one of Bates Motel as a dark C21st version of Twin Peaks. But that was just my way of watching it. I doubt many Twin Peaks fans would see it that way.

I know people disagree with me here but I honestly think the acting in Bates Motel is not very good and quite unconvincing.

I love Bates Motel. I was a Freddy Highmore fan before the show and I really love how he underplays roles while still being effective. I also think Vera Farmiga is the bees knees and the combination of the two bring the story to life for me.
I was all set to hate it, as I often do with modernizations, but this show would definitely be an exception for me.
I don't think it belongs in a top 25 list, but I think I'd find a place for it in the top 50.
I haven't seen Bates Motel, I'm open to it being good, but I HATE how it's set in modern times.

I found myself underwhelmed by Arrested Development. Rated like 9.5 in the IMDB, it's a good show that works very well but nothing sort of the timeless almost transcendental comedic experience that I was expecting before I watched it (i.e. Seinfeld).
Another show i've just realized is the original Twilight Zone, which would have probably made my top 10. Hopefully i can count on you guys to get it in :) . For anyone who hasn't seen it, there is quite a few episodes on yt, here is the pilot which isn't one of my favourites. -

I just read today on the internet that they're going to make a Friday the 13th TV show. There already was one in the '80s, but Jason Voorhees wasn't a character in it. He will be in the new one, though. Apparently it will be about the residents of Jason's town and how they deal with having Jason around in their lives. Or something like that. It will also explore his family and it may even take place in different time periods.
Pretty excited about this project. I'll definitely be watching.

Yeah, I was going through the top rated IMDB TV shows when I spotted it quite a few pages in. Will probably be on mine, I haven't seen them all but a delightful little (podcast/)show that I always enjoy listening to randomly whenever I see it on, not like other TV shows

I was watching an episode of The Ricky Gervais Show just last night. It's the one when Karl has a kidney stone. I love it and An Idiot Abroad, though I prefer TRGS. Are you watching Derek? Best thing he's done, IMO. Not as funny as TRGS, but a beautiful bittersweet piece of work.

I'd like to shamelessly promote another TV series so good that it may just be my number 1.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Smiley's People from the late 70's/early 80's.

I think you will like Lain more though, even though I personally put PMMM above the other 23 TV shows in my top 25 combined (with the exception of Haibane Renmei which I regard as superior in a few ways). Never heard of this Avatar show, though.
Edit: I see, after some googling, Avatar is an american animated TV series made for teenager boys, hum, I don't know if I would like it though. In terms of anime I guess the stuff most similar to it would be shonen series like DragonBall, Naruto and Bleach.

That brings more diversity. If everybody voted for all these new popular HBO shows and related ones then I will get like 15 singular picks of mine into the top 100 since all other points would be concentrated in the top 20. I actually included these popular HBO shows into my top 25 since they indeed represent the best that English language television has to offer though my favorite English language TV show is from the 1990's.

I would have guessed you would love it. Indeed it's one of the best TV shows of all time, similar shows in terms of tone were directed by the same man, Shinichiro Watanabe, such as Kids on the Slope and Samurai Shamploo are the other ones I watched (Bebop has been more memorable to me though, I first watched it when I was 13 and I still remembered the most episodes when I re-watched it a two of years ago), although he is not as popular in Japan as among Western anime fans (thanks to the very heavy western influence in all works he directed: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shinichir%C5%8D_Watanabe).

I've started watching Twin Peaks. I was worried that it wouldn't feel very Lynchian, since it was a network television show that aired over 20 years ago, but I'm only four episodes into it and there has already been a dream sequence involving a midget--- er, excuse, little person--- speaking cryptically and dancing. So yeah, it definitely feels like David Lynch. I'm really enjoying it so far.

CBS.com streams full episodes of classic shows for free. If I am not mistaken they have full seasons of these shows up: The Twilight Zone, Star Trek (Original, Voyager, Deep Space Nine, Enterprise, and The Next Generation,) I Love Lucy, The Brady Bunch, TWIN PEAKS, Laverne & Shirley, and some others too.
