There's some gems in both 1970 and 1978.

Since it's fashionable, here's how my films break down by year. Just noticed 1978 is unrepresented. :( It does seem as though 1970 and 1978 are the two years most people have the fewest films from.

1970 - 1
1971 - 5
1972 - 2
1973 - 2
1974 - 5
1975 - 1
1976 - 4
1977 - 1
1978 - 0
1979 - 4
1970 - 0
1971 - 0
1972 - 0
1973 - 0
1974 - 25
1975 - 0
1976 - 0
1977 - 0
1978 - 0
1979 - 0

I'm a big 1974 fan

Just sorted out my list so far, not too difficult to narrow down to 25 as some of other people's favourites that will make the list already are more 7/10 films for me that I am happy to leave off. A few I'm unsure off and that I hope my decision doesn't affec too much, and then I plan on watching a few more films before the deadline too.

1972 - 3
1973 - 2

1975 - 5
1976 - 3
1977 - 4
1978 - 0!!!!!!!!!!!! (to be fair, I didn't get around to seeing Days of Heaven. It's the one I wanted to see the most that I didn't.)

If it were not for the very early 80's this would be my favorite decade. It was a time that technologically induced cinematic awe, as well as emotional need.

Wish there was a 1975 to 1985 decade... ;)

OK, done ordering. What does it matter. All 25 are masterpieces!

Just sent my list! Choosing 25 films is easy peasy piece of cake, but ordering is much harder. I didn't pay much attention to it, to be honest. Just made sure one certain film is first. :) Also this decade was dominated by one certain director (three films of his on my list). In case you wonder, yes, there are English language films on my list! I could pick only foreign obscurities, but decided to once again complete a list of my true favourites, not just foreign films for the sake of it. Just the same thing I did with the 80s and 90s. If I counted correctly it's five English-speaking films out of 25 for me! One of them is pretty high leaving behind some true foreign masterpieces. I think that my list is pretty diverse as it contains a documentary, arthouse films, well-known films loved by general audience and an animation! It also has two Polish movies I'm pretty sure nobody else voted for!

There was a lot of cheesey, not so great, more light hearted kind of movies I felt at the bottom end of the Eighties list. Whilst most of you will tell me I'm in the minority in my complaints here (I know a lot of people loved this), I really hope and think that for the Seventies we can get 100 proper great films, I would love for films I love to appear from the very start to the very end :D Such a fantastic decade, Sixties will be great too.

Finishing up now.

Geez--figuring out what actually goes on the list hasn't been too bad, but ordering the top 15 is incredibly hard. I'm looking at possible #1s as low as my current #8, and pretty much everything from 9-14 could go in any order.

Holden Pike
07-15-14, 10:27 AM
Sitting at eighty-four participants. There are now four hundred and nine different titles that have received at least one vote. Sixty-seven of them have at least a hundred points, and unless I get a lot more ballots at the end here than I anticipate, that means that all of them will make the list. Order to be determined. The bottom threshold now for making the cut and being part of the top one hundred is at sixty points. That means a film could have two first place votes, but if that's all it earns, it won't be enough to make our list. It's going to take three to five people supporting a title, at minimum, for it to make the cut. And wait until you see how many votes the films in the top tier are getting!

Let's finish strong, MoFo. Bring me your ballots.

That is why I'm confident that the list will be great, but it also concerns me about great films that not many have seen. I'm wondering how many Roeg and Altman films make it. Walkabout probably will but I'm not sure how many others love The Man Who Fell to Earth or Don't Look Now. Then with Altman, McCabe & Mrs. Miller, Nashville and The Long Goodbye should make it easily, you'd think MASH would even though it divides opinion around here, but then I don't know about a handful of his lesser works that I've recently watched: 3 Women (quite likely to make it), Images, California Split and Brewster McCloud, I want to watch Thieves Like Us today too.

Holden Pike

Have faith, dear readers. I'm not going to look up which titles you guys are speculating about, but I will say I think there are going to be lots of happy surprises and a very, very strong list.

Though it isn't done, yet! But from what I see, and the trends in voting....yeah, I think with this many precincts reporting, at this point I can call this one as going to be "pretty fu*kin' good".

But I do recommend running one of these lists, sometime. The fun of watching you all squirm and willdly speculate is a hoot. And we've haven't even really begun, yet!

Not picking on you, Daniel M, but this is a curious sort of thing which seems to happen around here that people focus on directors, rather than on films. It really does seem like some people see the decade, think 'what directors do I like who made films' and vote for their films rather than thinking about which their favourite films are. The best film of the decade could have been made by someone who otherwise made a load of rubbish films (*cough*George Lucas*cough*).

I know everyone has their own criteria for choosing their list, and that's cool. I'm not sure I even know who directed all the films I picked. I'm hoping to see a diverse list rather than a tour through the works of certain favoured directors.

Out of the ones mentioned above, I would have thought Don't Look Now has the strongest chance of making it, but you never know. (I may or may not have voted for one Roeg film but if so I'm not saying which one ;) ). I wouldn't have thought any of Altman's 'lesser works' stand a chance against Rocky, Grease and Jaws, but you never know.

Fassbinder completely ruled the 70s, much more significantly for me than Altman and Roeg, but few people here have seen more than two or three of his films. And none of his films made my list.

Daniel M
07-15-14, 02:22 PM
More the opposite, they're my favourite directors of the decade because of the films they've made. Even your example George Lucas made Star Wars and American Graffiti (which I thought was great), so is one of the best directors of the decade. All the Roeg films I've ever seen are from the decade and I liked them all, same with majority of Altman. I won't be voting for his lesser films because of him, but I wish I could, they're the type of films that would be in my 25-50 range if I did a top 100. My list is diverse and has loads of directors - in fact right now I have 18 different directors.

I watched Fear Eats The Soul earlier today actually (I was meant to watch it a week or two ago but forgot), I liked it a lot. I kind of regret not exploring more from him, but there's so much more other directors I could say the same which I think is testament to how great the decade was.

Make sure that a) you actually have twenty-five films and haven't skipped a number, b) make sure you don't have the same film more than once. This has already come up three times, believe it or not. I am sure it is from last minute juggling of the order, not realizing you didn't delete the line....but it will make it quicker (and less embarrassing) if you catch it before you send in the list.

Thank you. :)

I didn't get to watch nearly as many 70s films as I had hoped/planned to, but I didn't pay much attention to who directed what. I will say though that one director ended up with three entries on my list, with two of them scoring quite high.

1. My top 25 of the 1970's (In no particular order)

#1 In order to qualify for the countdown, you have to PM your list to Holden.

#2 Lists submitted for the countdown have to be ordered

#3 You only listed 24 films. You don't have to submit a full 25, but you only listed 24 in your now deleted post.

Fassbinder completely ruled the 70s, much more significantly for me than Altman and Roeg, but few people here have seen more than two or three of his films. And none of his films made my list.

I've only seen three, and two of them are on my list. One of them has no chance, but I've seen the other one mentioned here a few times so I have tentative hopes it will make it.

Yeah, Lucas was a bad example, he's made quite a few films I really like, some of which are either on my list or just missed off. But I had to suffer through Attack of the Clones again the other day, and that's what sprang to mind.

Just had a quick count up and I have four directors with more than one film in my top 25. But I wouldn't say I was a particular fan of any of them, as they all have plenty of other films which I don't like or haven't seen.

cricket
07-15-14, 05:23 PM
I ended up with 23 different directors and I could see anywhere from 14 to 20 of my movies making it. I believe 3 of my movies will not get any other votes.

There's no real answer to that. Especially given that your definition of "junk" doesn't exactly fit with that of other people.

Though of course everybody's definition of those terms varies to some degree.

Asian cinema was in crisis during the 1970's: Japanese cinema was in a depression with the lowest number of movies made and lowest studio revenues during that decade (because TV destroyed film ticket sales). While the cinema of China, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, etc, was still rather embryonic.

I would expect a ton of Japanese movies in the 1950's and 1960's countdowns though.

In the 1970's the most critically aclaimed Japanese film was Battles Without Honor and Humanity (1973) about the Yakuza:

You can always find great movies in every decade of Japanese cinema from the 1930's onwards but the economic size of the film industry was at it's lowest point in the 1970's in Japan over the last 60 years. Hence less talent and thus less great stuff produced over the decade compared to the other decades.

Don't let these ravenous jackals pressure you, Holds. They always want things immediately. Do it whenever you want.

Yup, and he hasn't tortured Daniel nearly enough to start the countdown just yet.

If you voted for Pumping Iron and you're not the person I'm thinking of, you're safe.

Sorry, I mistyped. It was Daniel's #1. He loves those ripped manly bodies.

Duddy Kravitz was mine. Richard Dreyfuss is great and auteur Denholm Elliott's bar mitzvah film is a hoot. Holds isn't much of a fan, but I recommend you check it out for yourself. It's on YouTube (with closed captioning, although they occasionally get the dialogue wrong). It's one of several of the excellent films on my list which is criminally underseen and won't make The 100. Then again, I left off dozens which are equally good and in the same boat. Happy viewing.

I should have submitted a top 20 but not to worry 60's list will be interesting. A lot of classics I have in mind. Also I don't really watch many foreign films until recent times so I could not think of many in the 70's that I have seen.

Really? How? Will there be 70's movies included? :D

Sorry that was referring to a reply from Mr Minio about no foreign films in my list.
