That ended too early. I was starting to go around pretending to be other MoFo's under the "Chris" name.
Advanced chat doesn't work on mobile site. Just opens a bigger text box and can't attach pics to show you. Also text overlaps boxes ect
I assume by "Advanced chat" you mean the text editor options. If so, that's deliberate: WYSIWYG editors work very poorly and inconsistently on mobile (I recently found a promising alternative, so we'll see how that goes). And the mobile site in general is intentionally scaled down to be fast-loading, simple, and easy to use.
Re: text overlapping. That, however, may be a bug. Definitely PM me the URL on that, if you would.

I think Yoda would've matched your IP and have foiled your plans. ;)

All my reviews in my review thread are showing only 2 popcorn ratings, even tho I rated them higher.
Yeah, I'm changing the way popcorn rating images are displayed. Won't be long.
Masterman
03-28-14, 12:23 PM
Oh okay Chris :).
Okay, all done. What's funny is that it actually wasn't displaying them all as 2s--it was just displaying 5s as 2s. If it looked like all, it must be because you give a lot of movies 5s. :D
Anyway, the rating images are coded differently now so that we can display slightly different versions in The Shoutbox (and elsewhere), so they look smooth on dark backgrounds, in case anyone was curious.
Sometimes even after I check the thread, the thread will still be highlighted as having new posts in the New Posts section.

Pretty hard to guess as to why this is without hurling a lot of different questions at you, but I find it works awfully well if you actually hit the New Post/Last Post arrow icons, rather than just clicking into the thread. It also might help to hit New Posts again, rather than reloading the page.

For some reason the comics list does not show up in my list drop down or in the top five on my profile.

How am I able to "Friend" someone now? I cant find the feature no matter where I look?
We don't use a friends system any more. The old one really didn't have any purpose--the creators of the forum software seem to have thrown it in as an afterthought to potentially build on later. It was basically just symbolic. Also, I hate friendship.
I am, however, considering a feature that lets people pick users to follow so they can see all their combined activity in one place. I'll have to revisit that down the line. :)
Oh! Ok thanks for the answer.
Hey Yoda, Bicycle Thieves is listed as a 2013 film in the Sight & Sounds list.
Thanks for catching that--there are going to be a few of these in the immediate future, since I've linked all the list films to the new database and just the other day switched them to display the years from that source. It won't affect them being checked off or anything like that, but by all means keep letting me know if you guys find any others.
Yods! everytime I go to the front page the categories are only half there  is it my computer or a bug? :goof:
Daniel M actually found this one, but Fright Night is listed as 2011 on the horror list.
Thanks, Swan. :)

There are a few movies on the Best Picture Oscars list with the wrong years (easy to spot because it should be in chronological order!)
I was bored so I looked through the horror list and found wrong dates.
Dawn of the Dead is listed as 2004.
Frankenstein is listed as 2007.
Dracula is listed as 2007.
The Wicker Man is listed as 2006.
The Haunting is listed as 1999.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is listed as 2003.
Carrie is listed as 2013.
The Phantom of the Opera is listed as 2004.
Friday the 13th is listed as 2009.
Fright Night is listed as 2011.
Black Christmas is listed as 2006.
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is listed as 2005.
House on Haunted Hill is listed as 1999.
Day of the Dead is listed as 2008.
The Hitcher is listed as 2007.
House of Wax is listed as 2005.
The Amityville Horror is listed as 2005.
The Pit and the Pendulum is listed as 1991.
The Mummy is listed as 1999.
Thanks. Yeah, it's almost all remakes that muck it up. I'll try to plow through these soon.
Okay, both the Horror list and the Best Picture list should be good, I think. Let me know if you guys notice any others. :)

By the way, with reviews, and I have always though this: could you not make it so that users can submit their own reviews, or at least certain 'trusted' members. I never even noticed the new review section until today, but it looks really nice, I think if people knew they could get their content up on the new system easily/quickly, there would be quite a few people who would use it and give it a nice consistent amount of content, and we'd end up with a good 'database' I guess. Maybe combine this with the ratings thing that was talked about in another thread.
Thanks guys, I'll update those year mismatches. Please do keep pointing out any others you come across.

Once again, you guys eerily predict the things on my To-Do list! :) I definitely want to give reviewers more control over the review flagging process. This might mean letting trusted reviewers flag their own, as you say. But it might mean instead (or also!) letting anyone "suggest" their post as a review, with the suggestion going into a mod queue that we can then approve. I'm leaning towards the latter, but either way I definitely want to streamline that process and make it easier for reviewers to bring new reviews to our attention.
So yeah, great call. :) Very cool how often you guys are thinking along the same lines.
When I click on more reviews from the main reviews page it takes me to page with the most recent ten reviews. At the bottom it tells me how many pages of reviews there are. When I try to navigate to the next page of reviews it instead takes me back to the main review page. Hope this makes sense.
Can you try it again now?
Working now. Your a wizard.
Or a dumb guy who forgot to update that template after I was done testing it. Thanks for catching that. ;)

The main page shows my post for the 2014 MoFo Prom!!! as being the latest post.
That's not correct, though. There's been lots of other posts since then. So this shouldn't be showing there.

Probably just bad HTTP requests. It can happen semi-randomly on any site, especially if the connection is a little wonky.
Let me know if it persists, though if I'm right about the cause there probably isn't a ton I can do other than maybe make the caching headers more aggressive or something.

This isnt a problem with the new design im just wondering am I missing something as I cant tell the difference between threads I have and havent posted in, I know before there was a way of telling but I cant see it at the moment.
PS Yoda I love the new design, I did say in the shoutbox when I come back.
Thanks n3wt. :)
On the old design, there was a very subtle way to tell you'd posted in a thread (you're probably one of the few who noticed), in that the largely useless thread icon to the left of the titles would have a dot on it, but as you've noticed we've scrapped those (because of the aforementioned largely uselessness). So you can't tell at a glance, unfortunately. But you can click on the number of replies to get a list of everyone who's posted in it, and it will automatically highlight your name so you can find it quickly. Hope that helps. :)
Awesome man I didnt even think of that :laugh:

Are the adverts supposed to be at the top of the page?
I'm getting them underneath the first post on each page.
Yeah, I mentioned this in the New Design thread (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?p=1098006#post1098006) and Shoutbox, but they're going to move around a bit so I can see what works best. This morning I moved them under the first post on each page, rather than above.
They'll certainly change a few more times. There might be one that kind of resembles a post, too, for example. Gonna try a lot of different things to find the best balance between ad performance and aesthetics.
This isnt a new design problem but does any one else get this problem. When I post a picture from google images, I get the pictures URL and paste it, then there are just millions of characters going all down the page. But 99% of the time it is just normal, the link is there. :suspicious:
Assuming I'm understanding right, you need to actually click the image URL (rather than right-click and copy it), because the link itself has a ton of characters, like you mention, but if you click on it it quickly redirects to the actual/shorter URL.

I've found a quick fix for URL problems if they ever arise.
Instead of copying the URL of the image, opening the box in MoFo and pasting it... just right click on the image instead and hit "copy"... then, right click and paste directly into the box where you type.
I do that all the time with my Photobucket as the URL links are usually broken in Photobucket. Right click the image, copy, paste directly into the text box.

I've been noticing recently that the Now Playing box is off with its timing.
It says "Just Now" and "Less Than A Minute Ago" on the newest posts... but they were actually 2 or 3 minutes ago.
It's been getting gradually later and later... I've seen some that were made anywhere up to 4 and 5 minutes ago and the box still says "Just Now"
The Rodent
08-21-14, 12:19 PM
To prove it...
MoFo 70s Countdown as an example as it's just this second done it.
I refreshed the page to be sure.
Hmmm. What's odd is, you posted that image 18 minutes ago, and on my end, the post says it was posted 18 minutes ago in the thread, too.
Two quick things worth noting, though: the first is that the times update "live" without the page reloading, based off the clock on your computer. I don't know if that changes or illuminates anything. The second is that it's pretty much a given that the server clock is going to be a minute or two different from whatever a local computer clock says sometimes..
Per usual, if you wanna try to nail this down I'd have to whip up a test script and we'd end up trading a bunch of PMs. There are a lot of possible variables, though, including stuff I'd never be able to confirm, like if your computer's having trouble running the JavaScript smoothly or something like that. I'd be inclined to see if the times ever get beyond a normal margin of error of a few minutes before diving into that, but I'm certainly willing either way. :)
The Rodent
08-21-14, 12:41 PM
Been watching the past few minutes, managed to catch another before someone else posted... Camos Top films...
Now Playing seems to be 3 minutes behind on the timing.
That's actually a lot more helpful. I'm still like 80% sure this is something tiny and probably explained by boring, normal variation. But I'll see if I can whip something up and send you a link later to specifically compare the two.
The Rodent
08-21-14, 12:46 PM
I'll check the clock on my computer.
It may just be my internet. I passed my fair use policy a while back and TMobile tend to screw about with the connection speed and for some reason my dongle will actually disconnect completely too when I pass the fair use.
More than likely my connection then with the live updates tbh.
The Rodent
08-21-14, 12:52 PM
Sorry for all the pictures... this is my current stats of TMobile "Broadband"
Yikes, yeah, that complicates things. The numbers on the left/on the forum display are server time, they load when the page does and stay that way. The ones under Now Playing update in real time without the page load, so it's possible that the computer running the JavaScript slowly might contribute to something like this.
Based on that I think I should make a simple pass at a test script and just use that to decide how much to track it down. If it doesn't yield anything, assume it's just one of these random variables, but if it produces something useful, go from there.

Was just trying to reply to SaidLuisa's thread just a few minutes ago. When I clicked the post reply button, it totally froze up and then said the website was unavailable." I refreshed several times and got the same result. I couldn't get back in until I closed my browser (google chrome) completely and reopened it and try again before I was able to load it
Did the browser itself freeze/crash? If so, did it do that when you clicked on the button, hovered over it, or were the two events very close together so that it would be difficult to say?
I ask because if the browser actually locked up then the only real explanation, apart from non-site-specific computer problems, would be it having a little trouble rendering the spinning reel image.

I don't think it was the browser. I had Facebook open in another tab and had no problems with it when I posted there at around the same time. I think it froze when I clicked the button, but I only hovered over it for a second so it's hard to say.

I hope it's not the computer. I just bought this one like two months ago.
Chrome keeps different tabs in different process, so that one tab can crash or freeze without the others ceasing to work. Whether or not it froze would basically just depend on whether or not you could do anything in it. IE: did you have a normal cursor, could you click on other links, etc.

I always thought it was automatically updated to keep time and have been putting the clocks in the flat with the computer.
Just now when the radio show started, all my clocks said 16:57.
This isn't exactly a bug, and you'll only notice it if you use Chrome, and only if you have it set to upgrade automatically and have the most recent version, and you might not have noticed anyway, and I'm posting this preemptively before anyone has mentioned it, but...
...Chrome has been messing with the way their fonts are rendered lately. This is probably good news in a long-term sense because a lot of developers had issues with it. But it's been bad news in the short-term because it's mucking with the margins and sizes I'm using for the site's primary font. I changed the alignment of some of the headers and buttons to account for this, only for Chrome to mess with it again shortly after. Ugh.
That's a minor inconvenience, though: the real problem is that at some of the sizes we're using, the text can look suddenly too thick, and kind of squished or jagged at certain sizes. So just a heads-up that I'm aware of this, and it's lame, and I'm going to try to find a fix for it, assuming another version of Chrome doesn't come along and undo the fix for the fix, or whatever.

Think I have a problem with animated avis.
Tried to upload an animated avatar, and it just shows the solid picture.
Should be this http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q552/The-Rodent/Star-Wars-Weekend-Animated-_zps5ev6cdsh.gif (http://s1163.photobucket.com/user/The-Rodent/media/Star-Wars-Weekend-Animated-_zps5ev6cdsh.gif.html) but it's not taking.
Tried to link directly from Photobucket too (http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q552/The-Rodent/Star-Wars-Weekend-Animated-_zps5ev6cdsh.gif) and that's also just putting up the solid image with no animation.
Tried one of my other avatars, one I know works on the site because I've used it before, but it's also just a solid image instead of being animated.
I'm on a tablet so I can't check, but my guess is the dimensions exceed the maximum and the server is resizing it, which would break the animation. Could be dimensions or file size. But if you use a third party to resize or scale down first, and the upload it, that should work.

Not a bug report but will multi-quoting be added? It'd help me tremendously :)
Tsk tsk, wrong use of future tense. :p
We already have multi-quoting. :yup:
Aye; it's under the More Options cog on the far right. Clicking on Multi-quote will subtly highlight it in yellow, and you'll find the text of each post once you hit Post Reply (it won't show up in the Quick Reply box, though).
This is on the desktop site only (not mobile), if that explains anything.
One thing I thought about was being able to comment back to others when they leave post comments without having to message them or whatever. Like maybe add a feature where we can leave a post comment comment. If that makes sense.
Also I've been noticing, I don't know if it's a bug or just on my side, but I get notifications of my rep way after I'm given it. Not extremely a long time but as soon as I'm given it as usual.

It makes sense, and it'd definitely be ideal; only issue is that system is piggybacking off of the forum's archaic reputation system and needs to attach to a post, so it'd take a lot of reworking to allow sub-comments. Awhile back, at someone's suggestion (I can't remember who), I added the PM link to each to sorta split the difference.

Yeah, sorry, that's definitely the CDN (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=41199). Please let me know if it happens again. If it happens with any regularity then it won't be worth the performance upgrade we get from it, though if it comes to that I'll have to really get into the weeds about debugging the problem.

Death is a Caress from the noirs list says 1950; I believe it should be 1949.
Thanks; it looks like it was released late in the year, and when that happens the system sometimes end up using another release date. Since this is a bit lesser known, my guess is the original release date probably wasn't even in the database at first (but is now). I'll update it manually and hopefully that'll stick.

Very minor because I can simply grab my iPad, but did we ever figure out why lists can't be checked off on a droid phone?
It should work fine on the mobile style, but if you're trying trying to use the desktop style on your phone, that would probably be why. More specifically, it'd probably be because on the desktop side there's a hover effect prior to the click.
I might look into removing it, but if I start trying to change things on the desktop style for non-desktop devices, I'm not sure where it would end.

At first blush this sounds like malware. One way to help determine this would be to try using another browser on your phone to see if it happens with that one, too.

If a second person is having the same problem, that significantly increases the likelihood that the ads are the issue. I'll remove them from mobile until we can sort this out. If this is on their end, apologies for the inconvenience.

I waited a while with this one, since I'm not sure if it's on my part...
But after clearing browser/cookies etc, loggin in/out etc. I still have the following problem:
On mobile, when I enter a new thread and want to view the first unread post (whether clicking the little red icon before entering the thread, or clicking the dedicated botton inside the thread) I keep getting redirected to an older post - one that was once new of course when I clicked the icon - but now it just doesn't update and won't redirect me to the correct new post. I keep being sent back to the same post over and over again.
It's not matter what I do.
I'm actually having something kind of related the last couple days. I'm on a phone but in desktop. I click on a post in now playing and it takes me to last read post instead. Not a big deal but certainly new.
For both of you: can you explain what you mean by "click on a post"? What specifically; link or icon, and in which location?
I tweaked the server time not too long ago, but that was still weeks, so I'm not sure why it would manifest now...

For instance this morning when a new post would come up in now playing for the gender tbread. I would click on it, normally that takes me to that specific post. Instead it would take me to the previous page in the thread, which is the first post I went to when signing on this morning.
Hope that makes sense.
It makes sense in that I understand, but it's borderline impossible to explain. The problem I've been having lately has to do with the "New Post" buttons (last post links by each forum, arrows on New Posts, etc), so I'd understand that, but the links in Now Playing are all to specific posts; it doesn't calculate anything with those based on your last visit or anything.
You're 100% positive that this is what you're clicking on, and not some similar link? Because that alternative fits perfectly with what I've been saying, and I'm at a total loss for the other.

Let me see and get back to you. Now that I am back on and have been in a couple threads.
One reason I ask is that clicking on desktop links with a mobile device is pretty wonky; I'm constantly clicking on things I didn't mean to, especially if I'm zooming in and out.
Also, it would probably be really useful, after we figure this part out, to switch to mobile and see what the links do then. That would rule out a lot of possibilities.
I'm having the exact same problem i actually mentioned it in the Survivor thread the other day, i'm not on mobile though and it is only happening with a few different threads. It happens whether i click on a thread in now playing or the title next to the subforum.
Ok, it doesn't seem to be doing it now. However, when I clicked on Gunslingers post for the fifties thread, in the actual at movie section, ot took me to the previous page and not that post.
It is just weird because it has never done that till the last couple days. It is not bothering me but it seemed similar to what MM was mentioning.
The Now Playing thing makes no sense to me whatsoever; those links don't calculate visit times or try to figure out what you've seen. They also point directly to the last post, whatever it is, so this is pretty freaky, unless you guys are all using different terminology than I am.
Re: "I'm not on mobile." Meaning you're not using a mobile device, you're not using the mobile style, or both? I know I sound pedantic with this stuff, but I need specifics to figure these things out, and a lot of the explanations end up being (unintentionally, I'm sure) ambiguous.
Also, not a big deal, but if you're having a problem like this, please always report it: if you mention it offhand in some huge game thread, the odds that I'll see it are very small. I'd rather be hassled by things that turn out not to be a problem sometimes than have people not report actual problems.

Okay, Yodes, this should be readable, understandable and simple... I hope. :)
Here's what the problem is... On my iPhone, in mobile version, say I click to view "new posts" and then the following screen comes up, as per usual, nothing strange here:
https://s3.postimg.org/hupa2aqkz/IMG_4890.png
I can see there's a new post in the "gender thread", so, say, I click the little red icon as I usually do, which usually takes me to the new post in the thread. But then I get taken to here (which is 17 hours ago aka not exactly new):
https://s3.postimg.org/y6zbs14wj/IMG_4891.png
uh, so then, in hope of temporary taking a cheat route around the problem, I just go up and click the big button on top of the page, which in this case says "first unread post". I forgot to link to a picture with that, but you should know what I mean. But yeah, when I click that it takes me here:
https://s3.postimg.org/ve64804k3/IMG_4892.png
that post by Rodent is just below the post of mine you see in the second photo I linked to... so yeah, no matter what I do I still isn't being taken to the first unread post/or the last post of the thread, which is what it should do.
- Again, I have no idea if this is me or the forum, but nevertheless this is what I'm experiencing...

I'm probably not going to be able to delve into this today, but thank you for the details. I'll see what I can do.

Thanks, it's cool. Do it whenever. I mean, I've lived with it for a while now, so I can do a couple more days or whatever. :)
But it is annoying, so if it ain't fixable, one way or the other, I'm gonna kill myself. :p Having to manually click into the thread, scroll down, click page number and scroll down to the relevant post EVERY TIME is sure A DAMN LOT of effort just to see the newest post.
In the meantime, you may find it easier to click on the Last Post icon (the arrow next to the Last Post info on New Posts, rather than the one next to the thread title). Or the ones in Now Playing. That'll take you to the very last post, which is (at least for me) usually closer to the newest than whatever weirdness it's doing now.

The problem is when I open the thread from the "New Posts" results page, (using the down arrow at the beginning of the thread's title), it brings me to a post that I've already read, usually a page or two back from where it should open the thread. But the "Now Playing" box still brings up the last post of the thread.

I thought about trying to browse the forum on my iPhone using desktop mode, but no matter what I do I can't change it.
If I recall correctly, you asked me to switch this manually awhile back. If you want, I can force it to the desktop version for now. But I don't think that should make a difference; this is all happening server-side, I believe.
That might be right. But yeah, try forcing it if you could. Don't know if it's a feature I wanna keep, but I have a 6S Plus and thought about using the screen size better.
Okay, just switched you to Desktop. Let me know if that illuminates anything, though I'm pretty sure the issue is with the underlying system rather than how it's displayed.

Working. Thanks Yodes
Don't know why I haven't done this earlier. Bought this phone almost a year ago and the bigger screen makes the desktop version totally usable on phone.

Whenever I look at the main forums page without logging in, everything in the "Now Playing" box shows as having been posted 17 hours ago, regardless of how long ago those posts were actually posted.

"Working" as in you're seeing it, and not that it fixed all your New Post issues, right?
Anyway, let me know how you fare on desktop. Even if it's usable (and has a handful of features the mobile site doesn't yet), obviously the advantage of mobile is it loads much faster, has easier to use links, etc.

Your profile has your time zone as GMT +1200. Is this where you actually are in the world, and is this also what the time on your system (computer) clock says?

Yes, I'm in New Zealand.
How about the ol' system clock? I'm pretty sure the script on the home page is using that, so it's ultimately at the mercy of its accuracy.
Related to this: do you have JavaScript turned off?

Yeah, I'll try it for a while and see how I like it.
And well, don't know if it fixed the new post issues. But lately there have been some betterment on that department appearently. The Read first new post button began working but i haven't followed it all closely enough to really see how good/bad it is now.

The error appears on both an Apple computer with Safari and a Windows computer with Edge. Also, in case I didn't say it clearly enough before, it only shows the "17 hours ago" before I log in (or after I log out) - after I log in it shows the correct times. I do not think JavaScript is turned off.

I doubt that the "17 hours ago" is a "bug". It's probably just a "UAF", (an "unadvertised feature"), of the server's software. It probably shows "17 hours ago" because your time zone probably has a 17 hour time difference from where the server is located. When you're not signed in, the system doesn't know where you are, so it just sees you as 17 hours off from the server's clock. Once you sign in, the server can see where you are, so it can correct itself to "match up" the time zones.
I'm in New York, and when I'm not signed in, everything in the "Now Playing" box shows as having been posted "1 hour ago" because New York probably has a 1 hour time difference from the server.
This is just a guess, but maybe Yoda can verify this theory.
Haven't touched the login system in forever, so I'm inclined to think it was just a few typos (or it was mixed up with another password, CAPS LOCK was on, etc). Still happens to me from time to time, even when I'm nearly sure I have it right.
I made a tweak to the server that may have fixed that annoying thing where the New Post links weren't always taking you to the newest posts. Let me know if you guys notice an improvement.

I have. I tested it with a few different threads that it usually happens with just to make sure and it seems to be back to normal for me at least.
Thanks
