I like the new reputation page design. Only thing that would make it better is if I can see the username without having to hover over the avatar. Either way, good work.

Not really a design question, but I didn't see a thread for questions about the site...

Is there an easy way to see who has a certain movie in their top 10 movies other than clicking the * by their name and clicking the movie?

Not if I'm looking for a movie in particular.

Like lets say Se7en (because someone just had it in their top 10 post). Is there a way to just search like "Se7en" in a search to see who has it in their top 10's?

And  Yoda for putting up that feature in the near future... It should come to be very useful!

It's very easy to add, the only reason it's not up yet is because it's going to be part of a larger addition.

This isn't the easiest way to do it, but if you really want to know who has a specific movie as a favorite, you can put the movie into your own favorites, and then click on it in your own favorites page. That should show you a list of anyone else who has that movie as a favorite movie. (I think that will work.)

Yeah, it works that way if you're interested in doing specific movie searches.

Another suggestion... On someone's profile page it'd be cool if you can see the last time they signed in.

You should be able to: it's above the profile banner, on the far right.

I've had an idea... with these spammers becoming frequent again, how easy or difficult would it be to have a Report User button as well as the Report Post button?

Like, the user is temporarily stopped from posting if two or three members have clicked Report User on their profile... then a Mod can look at the situation and decide whether or not to ban.

If a person is frequently spamming crap and non English nonsense, why would a Mod think about whether or not to ban? Just ban.

The only two problems I see with this, is one, the grey area we already have with deciding if some can stay or not, depending on their other activity on the board. For instance, when I moved Le Movie Critic's thread the other night, and altered it into a welcome thread. Just in case the wrong decision is made, and someone is blocked, when maybe they shouldn't be, then they are stopped from posting for however long. Then there's number two . . . the however long. What if by chance, a mod doesn't get here for a bit, and that would-be new member has sat and stewed, not knowing why he was put on a temp ban. Not to mention, would he see that? Would he see a temp ban message, that will pop up out of no where. What else will he be told about what's going on, and how? What about the three members who decide? Will it become a topic online, every time it's a grey area decision? OK, that's more than two problems. :p

The Rodent
06-02-15, 07:33 AM
Well, when two members click report on a spam post, and the post is gone until a Mod comes along and judges.

My thinking was that when a genuine spamdog is on MoFo, and is hammering out spam after spam after spam like that guy earlier, if two members click Report User, it temporarily stops him from spamming, say like 24 hours or something (just spitballing timescales here)... members can then go at a leisurely pace and click the report button on his spammy posts/threads and get rid of them too, instead of chasing a Bot who is churning out hundreds of threads.

I dunno! I suppose I don't truly see a problem here. We are normally here, or close to it. It can't truly be that bothersome, having that stuff around for a bit, can it? How does it truly effect you all negatively? How does it mess up the flow of the board?

The Rodent
06-02-15, 08:05 AM
Well, it's not that big a burden etc, was just an idea as to get the spam stopped in its tracks before it takes over.

Like I said in the Shoutbox, a while back we had a massive influx which near took over the entire site.

06-02-15, 08:12 AM
OK, but that was while my spot was open. If I have to leave like that again, I will for sure say . . . unless it's for reasons I can't.

You know, maybe there is another way this could be addressed, that won't take anything more than a settings change. The change of a number, instead of some bigger message board add on. Not that I know how tough your idea may be, Rodent.

So anyway, let me ask you guys . . . On average, how many posts and/or threads did you all make on your first day here? Fifty? One hundred? One thousand? Getting my point? I say we limit new members to a simple amount of threads, as well as posts, for their first whatever amount of days here. What better way for any of us, mods included, to slow them down, until we can stop them permanently.

Opinions?!?

The Rodent
06-02-15, 08:55 AM
That might work... a limit of x threads per day while you're still new.

需st铖y
06-02-15, 09:22 AM
Maybe I'm just tired, but it seems like it would work! :)

Yoda
06-02-15, 10:04 AM
They're both excellent ideas in the sense that I think they would work. But thinking about the mechanics, I'm pretty sure both would be a pretty substantial amount of work, and the spam responses here are pretty darn good already (and it doesn't take much longer to clean up 20 spam threads than it does 2).

There are a couple of big features I reallllyyyyy wanna get in before the end of the year that probably wouldn't happen if I implemented either solution beforehand, so I think they'll have to be the victims of triage for the moment. But they're both very clever notions.

Quick update: I've finally gotten around to making most of the content areas (IE: non-forum stuff) usable on mobile. It's mostly basic stuff: viewing reviews, lists, essays, and box office stats. But you can also update your lists on mobile; should be pretty easy, too. The more interactive stuff, like searching lists, taking quizzes, or filtering reviews might be a bit longer.
FYI, and per the quote above, I just added list searching on mobile. Sorry it took so long!

Yoda
06-13-15, 04:45 PM
Oh, quiz taking, too (which I think came out really well on mobile), though I think I mentioned that already somewhere.

I'm still trying to decide whether or not it's worth the effort to add filtering to the reviews on mobile. I can't imagine people are clamoring to sift through thousands of reviews with their phones, but if I'm wrong, let me know. :)

Hey Yoda, as I am new I didn't see the forum on christmas, so do you like turn on some xmas decoration? I love one that makes the backround snow, it's pretty cool and you can turn it off if it bothers you. Despite that, I can't think ins something the forum needs something else. Although its a little stupid to think in xmas on June ;(. The other thing I thought was like having the snake minigame somewhere :p

Yoda
06-13-15, 05:09 PM
Yup, we add a snow effect. It's been a tradition for over a decade, and people seem to really like it. :) They usually get on my case if I wait too long to put it up.

Cole416

Another idea i'd like to pitch is when you go to lists that you are able to enter your popcorn rating for the movie beside it so people can see what you thought of it. It's cool to see all of what people have seen, but I think it'd make people look at it more if you added that.

Gatsby
07-27-15, 11:28 AM
Not a bad idea, but wouldn't it decrease activity on members' lists? Half the fun of making lists is finding out how other members think of your favorites. Buckets of popcorn don't do much.

I guess that's true. Maybe a thumbs up or down thing a la Siskel/Ebert? I really don't know just trying to throw things up there :)

Yoda
07-27-15, 12:17 PM
It's a solid idea, and it's related to something I've been thinking of doing. I'll add it to the list, for sure.

It's always a little sensitive doing stuff like this, because on one hand, this is a cool idea and really helps organize things. On the other hand, it largely renders threads like Movie Tab superfluous. Is that good or bad? Hard to say. I'm always trying to take the chaos of the forums and pull order out of it, with things like tagged reviews, but if you do that too much, why use the forums? Etc.

This has probably been suggested before and my apologies if it has, but is there any way to make it so that a member will get (at least temporarily) banned after a certain number of spam reports?

Not that the mods aren't doing a great job, they are, but spammers have a knack for striking when there's nobody to police them and when the forum is in the midst of a spam attack it can be virtually unusable. I diligently report every spam thread I see, but they seem to make new ones faster than I can report the existing ones.

Yoda
07-28-15, 09:13 AM
It'd have to be a bit more advanced than that, to make sure it didn't accidentally ban longtime users or something. But yeah, the recent attacks have convinced me to sit down and write in some new functionality. Hopefully won't be more than a couple of days.

I've said it a few times, they seem to be timing themselves to when Mods aren't about.

Loner started using invisible mode after I told him.

But yeah, if Yods can put in a function that deletes after two reports, and temporarily bans at the same time, it'll certainly cut back on the hundreds of threads that appear. It'd also make it easier for us lot who help out with that report button to halt the spam when we can, and save the Mods the hard work of removing them afterwards.

The Mods are all doing a sterling job though, I mean that... it's just a bit of a pain when they aren't about and we get 4 or 5 bots, plus the occasional real person with an agenda, working in tandem.

Well what I had in mind was maybe like a 12 hour or even 6 hour ban after like 10 spam reports (from at least two different members). That would stop the spammer and give time for a mod to come online and review it to make sure that it was a legitimate spammer. Then the mod could either make the ban permanent or lift it.

Yoda
07-28-15, 03:50 PM
Posted elsewhere, but relevant to the last few posts here, I've made a few tweaks to the spam reporting system:

User is banned if three people report one of their posts within an hour.
All mods are notified of the banning to make sure it's legitimate.
All mods and users with at least 500 posts are exempt.
Note that it takes three users, not three spam reports. This is to make sure one person can't ban anyone by themselves, even though this would probably help more often than it would hurt.

I might be adding a few more rules on top of this. Specifically, having a user's threads wiped out if they meet some (very narrow) criteria. But for now, this should at least give you guys the ability to stop the spam from piling up if a mod isn't around. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions, and for your patience. :)

Exempt from what anything specific? Or just that they can't post ? What if they have roughly 500 or 500 exactly, per say, and then don't come on for a day because they are busy and then come on and they are 'exempt'? Do they need to rush and create their 501st post? Just curious.

It just means they can't report spam..

He said at least 500 so i'm assuming 500 exactly should do the trick

I think it means that if you have at least 500 posts, you can't get banned by MoFos using the report button. It's a failsafe that keeps regular contributors to the site from getting banned by accident.

Like, a conglomerate list based on the movies MoFos have put in their profile's top 10?
