The Movie Forums Podcast - 2/3/14 (2014 Oscar Preview)

The Movie Forums PodcastYay, the Oscar podcast is here. Had a lot of fun taping this one; Holden and Mark were funny and insightful, as always, and I might finally be getting the hang of this recording stuff, because this is far and away the cleanest recording we've done yet. And yes, this year we really (really really!) do have a plan to make these things more frequent.

This is a bit longer than last year, but a bit shorter than 2012, and I just decided against splitting it into two parts.

The best way to get it is to subscribe with iTunes (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=306197266). The next best is to plug the podcast feed (http://feeds2.feedburner.com/movieforumspodcast) into your RSS reader. And if you absolutely must do it the old-fashioned way, here's a plain old download link:

Another huh-ooge thanks to Mark and Holden for their time. This is fast becoming one of my favorite MoFo traditions. One more year and I'm pretty sure these guys'll pass even the digital snow.

By the way, if you're subscribed through iTunes and the feed is being weird, hang tight: had to post it twice, and iTunes can be weird about that stuff. If that happens, sorry!

Worst-case scenario, you can just download it directly (http://www.movieforums.com/podcasts.php?podcastid=8) and add it to your library.

Holy! Yoda does have an awesome Radio voice!
I loved 12 years a Slave, I liked it cause it wasn't all romanticized, there wasn't this underlying love story or some other underlying theme that takes away from the content. It was simply telling a story. Oh yes and Gravity was relentless!!!! I hated it!

I just got done with it. Great job, Yoda. You and Holds sound rational, but I sound like a blithering idiot! Huwever, I don't sound "passionless".

They're talking about best actor right now - I still don't think Bale deserved the nomination. He's so freaking wooden I can't stand him, though I know I'm in the minority there.

Miss Vicky
02-04-14, 12:04 AM
mark f talking about people complaining "how can you nominate the movie but not the actor?"

I did that with Her and I still think it's BS that Phoenix didn't get the nomination and not just because he's my favorite actor. He's not just the lead actor in the movie, he basically IS the movie.

Miss Vicky

Were there no picks for Best Supporting Actor snubs? It seems like that was just ignored completely, unless it got edited out.

Best Animated Feature - Frozen sucked. I know it'll probably win, but it was awful. Though I'm really, really apathetic to this category this year. It was a sh*tty year for animation.

Yoda doesn't want to single Guapo out.

spring breakers is amazing and james franco is amazing.

Hanks, Franco and Gandolfini were mentioned as BSA snubs. Spring Breakers sucks way more than Franco does in Miss Vicky's clip. :)

Great job guys. Love putting a voice to your avatars. Of course my esteem for Mark grew even more cause his favorite movie of the year is Gravity. Which he is 100% correct about.

From the other thread:

I say this all the time, I know, but these podcasts are always big yawns I can never stand to listen through all of. It's a couple of grumbling men saying, "Yeah, I think this might win." "Yeah, I think this might win. Yeah. Here's some facts about previous Oscar shows...."

Now:
Did I seriously just hear the word "sh**" get bleeped out? It wasn't a good bleep -- I still heard it.

First you bitch about it, then you listen anyway and then bitch some more. Typical.

I actually listened to it, myself. Yoda does a really good job of making my rambling seem less rambly. Can't do much about my tendency to mumble, so I can only apologize to you all for that. I sing much more clearly than I speak, so I think I will perform my responses next year in song.

I didnt think you mumbled at all Holden. We always sound worse to ourselves then we do to others. Great job.

Listened to the first twenty minutes of it the other day but was forced to turn it off. Will resume a bit later on. From what I heard, though, excellent job. I love film podcasts, especially when knowledgable guys are talking on it like you lot.

Just started listening, plan on getting through a good portion tonight, and already heard my name cited as an "undeniable source of quality for all things cinema." But I don't think I said it was the future of filmmaking but instead an early transition film on what the future holds for film in general. A film on the cusp of the future. Something like that.

Daniel M

Finished listened to it this (yesterday) morning. Great stuff guys, really interesting listening to your thoughts.

"Like witnessing the future of movies before it has arrived." Though it's all the same to me. The idea I took away from it (and was trying to convey) was: not just a great film, but a capital-I Important, capital-I Influential one that it's easy to imagine looking like a turning point in certain technologies a couple of decades from now.

Harry Lime
02-05-14, 12:26 AM
Yeah, you're right, capital-I x2 indeed.

Also, I agree with you on American Hustle. While it was good it did feel like I had seen this before in the 90s in a couple Scorsese films.

And I disagree in general with using the term "oscar bait" to describe 12 Years a Slave. In subject matter perhaps, but in style and approach I look back at the director's previous films (all good films) and the uncompromising method employed to tell these stories are existent in all his features and that doesn't feel like baiting to me.

Anyway, I'm only 30 minutes in so I have some listening to do. How come you started with Best Picture instead of ending with it?

Yoda
02-05-14, 09:31 AM
No real reason; just seemed more interesting that way. One of the main reasons the Oscars go the other way is so you'll watch the whole thing, but you can just skip around on a podcast anyway, so we might as well lead with the bigger stuff.

Harry Lime

I just finished and wanted to say thanks again to you three, I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to next year's podcast and maybe something in between now and then.

I finally finished this today. It was great guys. Lots of great insight. I'm not sure that their is any interest in an 80s countdown podcast giving your guys thoughts but that would be really interesting too.
