Since SEDAI basically wants me out of the '80s Countdown thread, I'm moving into my own separate guest house (of hate) where I can bitch about the '80s Countdown list or talk about myself as much as I want to.

That way I can give people in the '80s Countdown thread some peace and quiet. It's come to this and I just have to do it.

This will also be a place of hibernation come the '70s Countdown list and all future Countdowns and various whatevers.

Come in, sit down, grab a pillow with Hollywood Montrose from Mannequin embroidered on it, and complain with me.

And from now on, because of what happened to Philip Seymour Hoffman, nobody is banned from the guest house.

This guest house is dedicated to the memory and honor of

http://www.movieforums.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=12877&stc=1&d=1391408180
Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Nope. Just the part where we end up talking about you instead of the list.

I find the complaining kind of silly (especially since the list isn't even done yet), but it's perfectly on topic.

I'll post in this thread, instead of the 80s thread. I think a part of his complaining is more of a joke than it is the truth. He is trying to make people laugh. I'll be honest the 90s thread would not have been what it was if SC wasn't joking as much.

Funny, I was under the impression that the purpose of Movie Forums was to discuss movies - particularly those we enjoyed. It's a shame that you're unable to feel as passionately about your favorite films as I do about mine and that you feel the need to lash out in bitterness because of it.

You've said yourself that you think movies in general are overrated. So why the hell do you come here, then?

I confess I've found this whole thing probably funnier than most people, but I mean... it's Philip Seymour Hoffman and I've had a history of not liking him that much on this site. And it's me here - Sexy Celebrity.

I'm trying my best to be more respectful than usual (if that's even showing at all) but I'm not comfortable in ... :bawling: mode. Nor do I really feel all that upset. But I was stunned and felt initially -- and surprisingly -- upset when I first heard about it. When the news broke.

Sexy Celebrity
02-03-14, 01:37 AM
ETA: Okay, I was wrong. It was music that you said was overrated, not movies (despite your continued participation in the song tourneys).

I love music, but the PHENOMENON of music is -- although I can understand why everyone loves music -- incredibly overrated to me. I mean, the way people treat music as if what your favorite kind of music/favorite music artists says so much about you... how it infiltrates culture... it's just unbelievably too much for me. I hate that. The other day, I discovered that when you look me up on Facebook (like if you're searching for me) it said under my name a couple of music artists that I liked. That REALLY pissed me off and I ended up unliking all of my music pages just to keep Facebook from doing that because I don't want to be defined to the outside world by who I listen to!!! Did it bother to list some of my favorite movies? NO. Just music and TV shows. THAT is why I hate music. That is why I belong to a movie forum and not a music forum.

But you still seem to lack a passion for movies and are forever threatening to leave (even banning yourself for three days, during which time you still read the forums), so why do you come here?

I lack the urge to watch a lot of stuff and to seek out all kinds of different stuff just for the hell of it. I absolutely have a very strong passion for movies, but I don't watch movies just to be watching movies. I love the experience of watching a movie that I enjoy for whatever reason. I love finding new things to enjoy. I have a lot more faith in movies than I do for something like music. But all this crap about needing to watch foreign films and all that -- absolutely disgusting to me. It reminds me of one of the biggest reasons why music turned me off so much -- like, when I was in school, growing up, the kids were all into certain types of music, and the music just did nothing for me. And I didn't get it. And there was a push to like certain kinds of music. That's how it almost feels to me with these "serious" foreign films and all that. Sure, many of those movies probably are terrific, but I have to really get intrigued enough to see it. There has to be a very compelling reason for me. It could be something silly such as a certain actor is in the movie, but that drives me to the movie. That gets me hooked. Like with Dallas Buyers Club -- it was seeing Jared Leto in drag that got me hooked.

If I can get "hooked" onto a movie for some reason, and I end up really liking it, it will mean so much more to me. But if I just watch a movie at random and like it, it might not. I can't be forced into things. I feel very strong passions, but I am not addicted to just watching movies just to be watching movies. This is what was bugging me about Mark F -- he looks addicted to just watching movies to be watching movies. He watches like 9,000 movies a day, and he gives them all a rating of 2.5. That is why I said it looked so passionless.

But music is a form of art, and art (in my eyes) is a very reliable way to understand what a person is about. What better way to differentiate yourself from everyone else than by having a particular taste in something over something else?

Of course, it probably won't open up your view of the world to everyone else (human personalities are far too complex), but I can probably get a decent enough picture of what you're about, just by looking at your favourite music, tv shows, art, and/or movies.

Well, you sure couldn't by what Facebook was trying to do to me. That was just outrageous. I happened to like the Alice Cooper Facebook page and there, when you looked me up on Facebook, it said, to the whole world, that I like Alice Cooper. I RARELY listen to Alice Cooper but I just liked the page because Facebook suggested it to me one day and I said, "Why the hell not?"

Sure, you can get an idea of a person from their tastes, but it's still not everything. It's not the total person.

Miss Vicky
02-03-14, 03:38 AM
THAT is why I hate music. That is why I belong to a movie forum and not a music forum.

That really didn't make any sense at all. But okay.

But how can you expect to discover something new and exciting if you don't step outside of your comfort zone? I get watching movies because the subject interests you or because there's an actor in it that you like - anybody who has read any of my posts knows that I do that as well and quite frequently. But if I didn't take the advice of others and experiment, I never would have found some of my current favorite movies.

I never expected to fall in love with a musical about a trans-sexual rock singer. Nor did I expect to fall in love with a silent german movie about a sleepwalker. But I did and it wouldn't have happened if I hadn't listened to people like you, Mark F and honeykid because I never would have watched them at all.

If I can get "hooked" onto a movie for some reason, and I end up really liking it, it will mean so much more to me. But if I just watch a movie at random and like it, it might not. I can't be forced into things. I feel very strong passions, but I am not addicted to just watching movies just to be watching movies.

How is watching a movie at random "forcing things"? You can't make yourself like something by watching it, but you also can't know for sure if you're going to like it unless you give it a try. And you should try it sometime. I watched that-one-movie-that-you're-sick-of-me-talking-about at random and you've seen the result of that.

This is what was bugging me about Mark F -- he looks addicted to just watching movies to be watching movies. He watches like 9,000 movies a day, and he gives them all a rating of 2.5. That is why I said it looked so passionless.

He watches 10 movies a day because his health problems mean he can't do much else. I imagine that if I watched that many movies in a day, my ratings would start to fall quite a bit too. That level of oversaturation would make it more difficult for me to be impressed and I suspect I'd find myself really nitpicking at any faults. But at the same time, if I watched 10 different movies a day, many of which are being shown on television or through a streaming service, rather than being from my own collection, a higher percentage of them would fall in the mediocre to crap range than if I just stuck to what I already love or expect to like.

Sexy Celebrity

That really didn't make any sense at all. But okay.

Well, whatever. That was a bad way to quote me. You made it look like I'm saying I hate music, when I don't. I made sense with what I was saying, which is that there's a thing about music that I hate because people treat it like it's EVERYTHING. Like it defines them. Like they couldn't live without it. And everyone is always treating other people like that, too, I feel -- that music should be universally adored. You should have favorites that you practically worship all the time. I see it as basically another form of religion. What bands/artists/genre you like is like defining yourself as a Catholic, Baptist, Islam, Buddhist, Methodist, whatever. To me, music is overpowering to me in that sense. It's like if someone asks me what kind of music I like, they may as well be inquiring about what brand of religion I follow.

I like music, but I hate this universal "YOU MUST LIKE MUSIC" mentality that is everywhere you go. Movies don't have a power over people like music does. You could get away more often with saying, "I don't like movies. I don't watch them." Some people would think you're a freak for saying that, but TONS MORE would think you're weird if you told them you don't like music. I hate how music is everywhere. I'm annoyed by iPods and things like that. But Song Tournament -- because I do like some music, it's fun to play in that. That's a game and it's about trying to get a song to win -- at least, it is for me. Everyone else says, "Just pick songs you like!" But that's coming from someone with a mentality that music is EVERYTHING. Where I'm coming from, I wanna pick the really good songs that I think will win. That's why I focused on patterns (male bands kept winning) and why I won the game more than anyone else. Song Tournament is just a game to me. A game to win.

I suspect that, on some level, you are being drawn to something, even if you think you're not. Even if it's just being drawn to do something "different."

I can't help what I'm drawn to and neither can you help what you check out. It depends on moods and just where your mind is at. I could conceivably turn into a person who starts watching ALL KINDS OF MOVIES someday. I could turn into an anime lover. I just don't know. It might happen. I don't believe in free will -- we're thrown to the wind. That's what I believe. As I say, I watch whatever "Great Spirit" makes me watch. I'm not in control. It's up to what my brain does next that determines if I'm gonna watch something ordinary or something out of the ordinary. I'm not even in control right now as I write this. This is all being written by the Sexy Celebrity robot to be read by the Miss Vicky robot. Or whoever robot.

I'm glad you did, but I still say you were drawn to those movies for reasons you yourself... you could maybe understand why you were drawn, but I don't think you can totally control how you're drawn to something. Maybe you just liked us and wanted to check out what movies we saw. Maybe there was something appealing about the transsexual rock star. Maybe there's something appealing about the plot to you. Maybe there's something appealing about just looking like you're interested in different movies. Whatever it is, you were drawn to those movies and you had no choice but to watch them.

I find movies fascinating because they DO say something about you. Like, there's reasons why you watch certain things. It's not the same as saying music and movies DEFINE you, but you do watch things for certain reasons. What you watch and if you like it or not says something deep about you. At that particular moment, at least. This is why to me... "crap" movies aren't always crap to a particular person. There can be profound insights, profound things in a simple movie that relate to you. That are necessary to you. That change you. That help you enjoy life better. I know that has been the case for me. You don't necessarily have to go looking far and wide for something exciting and exhilarating. You could watch the same movie everyday of your life and still lead a very fulfilled life, if it happened. You don't even have to be seen as dumb or stupid because of this. It's bullsh!t that you always need new and different things. It's like being a slut. "GO SLEEP WITH A NEW MOVIE EVERY NIGHT!" You know, I joke about Rodent always watching Young Guns, but I've always meant to be kind about it, not mean spirited. I get that Young Guns -- or anything he might watch over and over again -- could be beneficial to him. Which is why it pained me when he said he threw his copy of the movie away. I hope he really didn't.

Well, I just mean that if I did watch something because I was forcing myself to watch it, I might not like it. It's no different really than being forced to read a book for school and not liking it. Of course I COULD like it, but I really don't like to force myself to watch things. I don't want movie watching to feel like a chore. I don't wanna watch everything all at once. Something might be better off watched at a later time. And if I end up not seeing everything I should in my lifetime... oh well.

Plus I tend to watch things alone and I don't always feel comfortable with something strange, something I don't wanna watch, and I'm alone. It's like dating. Who wants to go out with a strange guy or girl? Someone they're really not interested in. Like a blind date. That's what it's like to me -- blind dating. That's why I think the commentaries are nice. I could always watch something new with someone else. I have a chaperone. And if I don't like it, I can bitch -- and bitching is comfortable to me. Whereas if I'm alone, I have no outlet. Hell, even if I'm NOT alone, the outlet can get strained if someone doesn't wanna hear me bitching, like you.

Well, whatever. I didn't mean to talk much about Mark F. I'm just saying I like to watch movies I feel passionate about seeing. Whatever Mark F is doing... that's Mark F. That's his thing. If I couldn't do much else, I don't know if I'd sit around watching any movie all the time. I might. I don't know. It sounds terrible. But maybe not to him. He does love movies.

But really, if you just apologize to me, I'll unban you, Skepsis. You haven't been that bad for the most part.

Yeah, um, I don't think so.

Learn from this, everyone -- Say you're sorry!

If Skepsis had apologized, then maybe in some Back to the Future-like way, the events of time would have been altered and Philip Seymour Hoffman would still be alive.

But don't feel guilty, Skepsis. We don't have free will. You couldn't help it.

But now my Guest House of Hate is also The Philip Seymour Hoffman MoFo Guest House. I've dedicated it to him because of this.

And that's really a lot because if Honeykid opened a guest house, and it killed Whoopi Goldberg, Honeykid wouldn't dedicate his guest house to Whoopi. No way, Jose.

By the way, that all might have been too much for all of you people who are still grieving. I'm sorry.

Depressing day over at the '80s Countdown. More Woody Allen trash.
