Alright, what say ye all on Starz's new pirate drama, Black Sails? (The first episode is viewable on their site already).
I've seen the first two episodes already, and I'm definitely interested. There's some unnecessary nudity in it, but I'm okay with that (others might not be). Great storyline, imo. And it has already been renewed for a second season before it even aired.

O to the M to the G. I am so hooked to this show. Last week was a nail-biter. I confess I actually resorted to all kinds of means to try and find the next episode plot breakdown before Saturday. Too bad they dont leak these things!!! These folks are up to all kinds of antics, and while the show does have some serious elements, I dont think it takes itself to serious, which helps tremendously.
Visually STUNNING. They film in South Africa - Capetown, I believe. Beautiful place.

Ive watched the first two episodes and have to say it remids me of Spartacus, but not as good as the first season. Everything and everyone looks authentic except for all the main actors who are too damn good looking. That kills it for me. Especially the supposed deadly and mysterious chick with the cowboy hat and daggers LOL @ that!

That 'be Anne Bonny. A bit fictionalized, maybe, but she was still a right nasty pirate.
I've only seen the first two episodes as well (because I... *cough* ...don't have Starz), but I'm really liking the show. I thought it would be a bit more low budget than it is. Very pleased to see ship battles and a very authentic-looking Nassau.
Narratively, it remains to be seen if the show is any good. I really like the pulse so far: a lot of tension and backstabbing and intrigue. Pretty much everything you'd expect from a pirate show. I'mma keep watching.
Whats sad is I am too lol! Just wished they cast it differently. Im not familiar with historical pirates other than Blackbeard. Was there even a Davy Jones?! (Google - No)
Nope. Done with this show. Got to the 4th episode and stopped due to all the gratuitous rape & torture scenes. Same reason I stopped watching Spartacus. (First season of Spartacus was good though) Now Im watching Low Winter Sun, and its awesome :yup:
That is all
Bumping for a newb who loves this show.
My bro was one of the first DoPs on this. I freaking love it. Totally bummed he wasn't on the final set so I could go and visit, lick some sweaty armpits, and steal the wardrobe...and maybe the man o war for my front garden. Would make a nice ornament.

Thanks Dani. Well, I guess there are not many people who like this. Can't believe no one has commented on here sine 2014? Nudity doesn't bother me - violence does but I just close my eyes unitl it's over, lol!
Yeah I'm going to start a thread on screen nudity because this theme has fascinated me for years. Back soon.
This is on my list to binge watch. I watched it when it first came out and loved it. But I got busy and fell too far behind. I am much better at binge watching than I am at watching a show week to week.
I watched season 1, but it really jumped the shark for me in S2, plus I got busy. And yes - overmuch nudity/violence. But my god the people are beautiful! I havent watched since mid S2, but I do know that:
SPOILER ALERT:
they killed Charles Vane off the show in the last season. Funny because it explains why he suddenly shows up in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and The 100 - the first as a latest season villain, and the 2nd as a regular. I do wish he wasnt so typecast as a "cat" whipped man - (he went from "youthful heartthrob hurt me" in Black Sails to "mama hurt me" in The 100, and "angsty villian" in SHIELD. I like his characters, but I think a man like that would annoy me in real life.
oh yeah. and THANK GOD they killed Miranda. She was a dull, awful and annoying person.
Re your first spoiler - brutal
your second spoiler - I really liked that character and the acting in that scene is amazing.
Worth checking out for those two scenes, and there's a long tracking shot during a heist that is amazing.
I've only seen ep 1 of this final season. Liked it but didn't love it. Too much talky talks with the wiminz which is starting to annoy me a bit. Bring on the pirates and gore.
Re your comment about the nudity - it calms down a lot. I never found it too much, though. Beautifully shot, and as you said, the bodies are jaw dropping. I was telling my oldest brother about this show and said when nood Eleanor gt out of bed and walked across the room I might have squealed a bit because she has such a stunning figure. Her bum is a delight, and usually I only squeal at men's bums.
mmm.... ok, I'll just go there. Even beside the fact that show seems like soft to middling porn written by a horny teenager (sex! violence! story.... SEX! story... sexsexsexsexviolencesexsexviolence, story, sexsexsex, story), I was floored when they made Flint gay in Season 2. I mean... I liked him for a straight guy. And wasnt it enough that Max and Eleanor went at it? Making Flint sexually fluid - to me - changed it from being an somewhat oversexed pirate show about pirates into a gay show specifically written for a gay audience. They lost me with Flint.
And beyond that - I get that you have a beautiful scene, with beautiful people getting busy, but when the show first started I was pumped for an actual legitimately interesting story, with some sexual drama peppered here and there. It felt like what we got, from even S1, was a who's-shagging-who-when soft porn show, with the occasional actual storyline peppered here and there.
The story itself it too thin, and drags. It shouldnt have take until S2 for them to decide to find the Urca gold. To fight. To stand. I spent most of my viewing time waiting for SOMETHING other than sex to happen. Holding an audience with sex is a cheap trick, imo - and a stand-in for good writing.
And that doesnt interest me long term.
That's the thing - for me it didn't seem porny at all, but for others it did. I knew before they even started filming there was going to be nudity so I guess I just wasn't surprised. I was told about the blackbeard merkin and the orgy with silver and the whores so I was fully aware. As for the showrunners, they're lawyers I believe. Probably why it's so talky. I dont mind slow burns but definitely not for everyone. I feel each season has taken a while to gather sp[eed and that loses people. You know, start with a great opening sequence then it lags until about episode 6, so I can see how people were getting bored. I'm just really taken with the sets, wardrobe and cinematography so when it gets to dialogue heavy I'm still engrossed in the screen.
The gay reveal I actually really liked but again, it repelled a lot of people. It was only very brief, though. I dont think they ever touch upon it again. All over red rover unless he gets another bang this season.
Anne Bonny is given more to do as a female pirate in season 3, and Jack Rackham was a standout. Ray Stephenson is still criminally underused. I loved him in Rome.
As an aside, sadly the guy who played Dufresne (Jannes Eiselen) in the first season succumbed to his battle with brain cancer. Apparently he was a lovely guy.
Im all for a slow burn. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is a slow burn. Luther is a slow burn. True Detective is a slow burn. TWD is a slow burn. This one just drags. I literally started reading episode recaps to see whether I wanted to even watch an episode of the show. I found there wasnt one episdode I *had* to watch. Now - seasons later, Im thinking of picking it up again since it seems they've finally made real progress beyond all the "I wanna be a real boy" angst.
re: Dufresne - wow that's too bad. Anne Bonny - they woobified her with Max to me. Nothing says "disregard this girl" like making her gay, and doing nothing but basically gay love scenes for a male-dominated audience. To me - I found Anne Bonny fascinatingly sinister UNTIL they threw her and Max together. Then it was like: "oh. okay. She's the guy eye-candy fantasy girl, complete with lesbian make-out sessions." She became a tired cliche.
Jack Rackham - literally the BEST character of them all. He's hilariously funny, but nothing he does can keep the show afloat. They dont give him enough scenes.
**side note: Ive only watched through 1/2 of S2, tho, so maybe it gets better. :p
Yes that all makes perfect sense to me. There certainly was a lot of male gaze in the show. I didnt mind it because they have beautiful bodies, and I quite like homoerotica, but totally appreciate that it rubbed you up the wrong way when it feels show horned in for the lads. IMO it does get better halfway through season 2.
Jack Rackham I love. My bro said Toby Schmidt was hysterically funny to be around all the time. He loved him. He loved the whole cast to be honest. Had lots of fun for two seasons.
Just on the male gaze aspect, I dont know if that was the decision by the showrunners, starz cr3atives or Michael Bay. I know Bay did have some creative input, I think mostly on colour, but doesnt seem sleazy enough for his input. I thought it was pretty classy, myself. No boobs or bums in hot pants practically touching the lens.
Very different, however, to the nudity in westworld. that doesnt seem the least bit sexualised to me. Just undraped robots. No different to looking at an unclad barbie or ken doll, although I wouldn't mind the camera panning down on rodrigo's fine, taught physique.

Just saw EP.2 Dani. Have you seen it yet?
Not yet, Wp. Soon. Saw a possible spoiler title on imdb the women are bitches, but that just might be the usual...or they might actually be getting bad ass. Looking forward to it.
I saw it last night. Way too dialogue heavy for my liking. I think the writers are going overboard with soliloquies. I didn't dislike it, but I was getting easily distracted. My concentration span is shot in this heat and humidity.
Any punters still around who may have seen 403? I havent seen it yet - probably tonight - but had a peak at the board over yonder with my eyes half closed for spoilers, and saw one thread title that it's brutal. YAY. I do like brutal in my weekly entertainment.
I fell asleep before the brutality pay off *loud crying face*. Too much talkies, more than usual. Will have a rewatch later.
I stopped watching after s1 ep3 when they were gang raping the whore tied up in the middle of the town.
yuck
I thought that was well done in that you cant see anything. I'm not a fan of in your face rape scenes for edginess. First 2 1/2 seasons I really enjoyed but dayum, it's like the writers' room said Rightyo, lads...we're wrapping with season 4 so throw as many words into those scripts as you can think of. dialogue heavy is good; drowning in dialogue is not so good.

What do you think of season 4 overall so far?
For me, it seems like they're squeezing everything in since it's the last season. It's not bad but I wouldn't call it good either. I wish it would go another 2 more seasons
I'm a bit flat with it this season so far, and that's coming from a super fan. Like you I think they're cramming it with everything but the kitchen sink. I'm hanging in there 'til the bitter end for the payoff because I love the look and the actors. Luke, Toby and Toby are great. I don't like myself for saying this because I'm a woman and love tough female characters (thought they were great from the get go but 1. they killed off my favourite female character and she was the best actress on the show and 2. they just got too meddling) but I feel they're giving the wiminz so much scenery chewing just to appease the sjw mob in the fandom. That's fine but it also pisses off the male fandom. I want my piratey action, dayum it.
I'm disappointed because I used to champ at the bit during the week for the next episode. At this point I feel like I'm dragging myself through it. I;m not hate watching; just getting distracted and like last night, nodded off. Not happy they're wrapping this season because I know how much work went into that enormous set, and still sad one of the ships burnt down.
annnnd I just got a spoiler. Pretty rude to put the spoiler in the thread title but it was my own fault for absentmindedly opening the board over there. I don't know if people who do that just have the intelligence of a turnip or they do it on purpose for shts and giggles.

I really like this latest episode. Enough violence even for you, Dani. Kind of heart breaking though...

Lol, you're always complaining there is too much talk so I hope that was enough violence for you? See what I meant about "heart breaking"? Having said that, Teach was a murderer probably a rapist and a pillager. He'd probably done as much to the crews of the ships he plundered.
Good episode though.
I still want to vomit. Couldn't eat dinner last night, and i bought some beaitiful blie swimmer crabs. Nup... i cant even type I'm still so upset. Currently gripping onto my cuppa . Husband was even looking at me in horror saying 'this is very disturbing' and he saw it the night before. I wish I had taken a selfie of the look on my face. I've never reacted that way watching a fave tv show before.
needs a spoiler tag, Wp. Some people in here aren't up to date. TIA.
I told my bro to watch it. He's only seen the first two seasons but he's jumping straight to 403 to see why I'm still unnerved. he knows screen violence doesn't usually bother me.
And just a warning for anyone who is put off by the violence in this which is at time OTT but is still watching, it is a torture scene that is pretty relentless, so just letting you know. I thought it was going to be the usual piratey stuff. Really was not braced for it. I am shocked at my reaction, though. Thought I was pretty much immune to screen violence. Obviously not, and that's a good thing. being desensitised makes me feel inhumane.

Lol, I thought you loved horror and violence? I didn't watch the rest of Hannibal because of all the violence. That girl's body skewered on the antlers....ugh!
This was horrible but really a gripping episode.
(I also think you're so upset because you were a little bit in love with Teach....)[wink]

I love screen violence. As explained on the imdb board, I was thrown by the relentless torture scene, and the sound editing in this show is so good the sound itself made me want to vomit (same happened with the earlier decapitations. I just wasn't braced for it, Wplains. Epic scene, though. torture gore just pushed me out of my comfort zone. And yes to your spoiler. Very much so. I won't get over that scene until you know who gets slowly tortured.

If you click on Go Advanced rather than Quick Reply you will see a red explanation mark. That's all I've managed so far. Destiny said she can't do it either. I'm just used to typing in long hand over at the other place because I got into the habit on a non film board I've been on for years. My advice is if it's a general tv thread like this one, just use coy language eg you know the torture gore in episode 403... and I'll know what you're talking about. Easier that way. *thumbs up*

I like Ray Stevenson (since I first saw him in the incomparable Rome) but jeez the heavy beard did nothing for him. . Not attractive IMO but I don't like facial hair,
But the actor is. I don't care how he looks in the show. That's just his character.
404 - no spoilers, just a rant. Ever notice with the talky talky episodes the actors speak at the speed of light to cram as many of the writers' words onto a scene? We had CC on and the captioning couldn't even keep up.

You think this was a talky episode? Come on, these last two eps have been pretty exciting.
The violence was pretty in your face but there was no conclusion about the you know who, and my comment was about the dialogue heaviness anyway. It was a general question about the speed of the dialogue.

"but there was no conclusion about the you know who"
You've lost me there, lol. Who are we talking about here? Most exciting bit here for me was the tiny glimmer they give that Thomas might actually still be alive. Now wouldn't that be a totally unexpected development? I'd really love it if it happened...
And they get back together and OMG kiss. Too bad we won't see the implosion of heads at the other board again. I think that's what brought down imdb - two men kissing for 3 seconds.
You know who =
Anne. My husband thinks fake out death and they'll bring her back. I think dead death but it was inconclusive so the SJWs on tumblr etc didn't go off their rockers and send death threats to the showrunners

Answering this here to bump the thread, Wp. I just spoke to bro. He said it's a working studio so tourists dont get in like on a universal lot with tours. You need to know someone up the hierarchy to get pass/ The black sails set is now being used for Outlander so you might get to see it from the freeway but hardly worth it.
s for the neighbouring slum, he walked through it with his girlfriend and had no problems - no he wasnt escorted by body guards - he walked through it; found it fascinating, but you've told me you're not interested so that answers your question.
I gave you the phone number for cape town studios and suggested you give them a call - would have been faster than PMing.
Did his kids get on set? Yes, they were extras in black sails.

I wouldnt walk through one either, Wp, and not that I think bro and his girlfriend did this but I kind of feel that this new slum tourism thing that became big after slumdog is pretty distasteful and unethical. Very very distressing (I had to drive through a massive refugee camp in Pakistan and it gave me night terrors) and treats human beings like they're zoo exhibits. Just my personal feels about it.
16 and 15 now so 3 or 4 years younger at the time. I saw stills of them (very cute) but I think it got left on the cutting room floor or they just got swallowed up by the crowd. When my bro isnt working on the weekend I'll ask if I can post the pics for you.

I started a travel thread so when you get home feel free to post a travel diary. Bro said the food in Cape Town is phenomenal. One of the rare shoots where he didnt lose weight. He mentioned a beach you should go to but he had a call come through before I could write it down. Oh and apparently south african wine is very good. Hun, been to SA twice already. This is my third trip. One of our trips was themed Le Cap Gourmet - went with 30 Frenchmen and even they were impressed by the quality of the (fabulous) restaurants while the wine is out of this world (this from someone who comes from a wine every producing country and thefore know a little about wine, lol). Our favorite is Pinotage a SA variety that never goes wrong. The wineries are in incredibly sophisticated and chic. I loved SA - it's up there as one of the best trips I've ever gone on. If you get a chance to go, don't miss it. There is really no similarity with other African countries. It's unique and breathtakingly beautiful.
Where is the travel thread? On this site? Link?

Took me four attempts to get through. I think Michael Bay took over the colour grading. Green has never looked so greennnnn.
Not really spoilery, just a general whinge, but for anyone not up to date
The wiminz have completely taken over, and when the hell did Woodes marry his whore because he keeps referring to her as his wife. I must have missed where he got divorced from his actual wife and married his floozy. I think the show has swan dived over a cliff. They'd better pick it up before the finale. A gratuitous lesbian scene at this point would be more interesting than all this overbloated talky talk.
Blacksails has gone all Buffy S7, yep, just with sand. Exposition, speech, somebody switches sides, speech, fight in the town square, speech, somebody dramatically returns, speech, gimme the treasure chest, speech on the deck of a ship, what treasure chest, speech, throat gets slit, speech, end.
The most emotional I ever got this season was when the dairy goat drowned. At least it can't be molested anymore.
Ohhh poor Mary. She was so sweet. Whatever hppened to her two lovers?
And wth is everyone taking orders from Eleanor. Jaysus. She's not Ching Shih.
I know, I question her as a competent authority figure, this supposed natural leader people would look to. To me she just comes across as unintelligent and annoying.
How long ago did she have her fling with Vane because when that happened she was 17 so I'm thinking maybe she's about 20. Right from the outset I never bought that they'd be pushed around by some little dolly in pretty dresses whose father abandoned her there because she wasnt a boy. I liked the character up until recently, but it just doesnt work for me. The only one I could ever see bossing the thugs around was Miranda.
Anyone up to date? I fell asleep before the end just after a beautiful wide shot from above and just wondering if there's a pay out, you know, like pirates being piratey and killing people. I'm at the point now where the wiminz are driving me insane so I hate to think what the pirates are doing about it.
I forgot to reply to myself. Yes there is a payout. I was very very hppy.
Wp should be home by now. Looking forward to your reaction.
Well, so they killed her so I guess that takes care of the problem. Too bad there's only a few eps left.

Ok, so I just saw EP. 6 and I am NOT happy! 😤☹️
So Eleanor is dead, Madi is dead, Anne is dying and (the gorgeous) Billy is very probably dead too. I hate it! I've spent four years following these characters and now they are dropping like flies.....*sigh*
Loved how Flint showed some humanity at last though. Great scene with Eleanor, made me tear up, *sniff*. Got a bit confused there at the end - were they in different ships? And did they go back to the slave island?
BTW, TS's big bro is nowhere near as attractive as he is, hmm?
Where are you? Come and talk to me....😛
I loved it. They're all going to end up as shark burly so about time they brought it on. Looking forward to tonight's ep.
I don't understand Flint's answer. I would have thrown a big fat yes back at that character. Damn I want to see Woodes flayed alive.

Flint was being kind - he showed some pity for her. After all, they were once friends. I also loved how empathetic he was with Silver. Did you watch EP.7 tonight?
I'm surprised they killed off Madi though, I thought she survived along with Silver.
Can you imagine how gut wrenching it must be for the actors to be killed off one by one after working together for so many years? Must be sad to leave....

Yes I read he needed to get back to his wife and small kids who lived in LA. Wonder why they didn't move with him though if the kids are still small? Must be hard for an actor to leave a job in their competitive, cut throat world. Seriously, I'd move to Capetown tomorrow. It's a great place to live (albeit there are some concerns about crime).
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Maybe he and his wife didn't choose to drag the kids all over the world a la angelina jolie and her swag of nannies.

Well, just musing here. When my husband had a lecturing engagement for one year in the US, we moved there with our (then) two small children. It was actually great for the kids as they learned a new language and they became perfectly fluent in English. They really enjoyed their time in the US and remember it fondly. I do too... :D
That's a bit different to relocating the family every year for 6 months. Maybe the mother of his kids had a say in it.
I havent seen 407 yet but just seeing the title of a review on fb it seems Rackham gets some decent screen time.

They were only there for six months of every year? Do tell because you have more inside info than me and I find the whole process quite fascinating, lol.
Ok so a bit of spoilage here (maybe):

Ok, so that didn't work lol. Let's try it here...
like to read recaps of the episodes I watch and tend to read several. Someone said Billy turns up in the preview of Ep. 7 - gosh I certainly hope so, I'm just not ready for him to die....:D They also suggested Madi might not have bought it yet. It is true we did not really see her die - just Eleanor trying to get her to wake up"
There are other mofos here watching it but they're probably not up to date yet so don't want to see possible spoilers.
Shows like this generally take 6-7 months a year to shoot, nd they're very long hours so he wouldn't have seen his kids much anyway except for the xmas break which I think was two weeks. I seem to recall his wife has a career in US so it was no doubt a joint decision not to uproot, and for him to ask to be written out. It was a spectacular exit so I have no problems with that. It's just a pity the recent exits (406) werent as brutal. One in particular got off lightly IMO.

Well, I am putting spoilers on anything that might spoil it for someone else. Re shooting schedules: I get that it must be difficult for actors' families especially in the wife also has a career,. After all, someone has to take care of the kids eh? I wonder if that's why these marriages last about two minutes?
Re the deaths: it's just too many all at once. I mean, I'm invested in the characters, yeah even Blackbeard. Bad enough watching Miranda and Thomas disappear but all of these one on top of the other is just too much. It just feels rushed. Re Anne, well frankly, it didn't occur to me she was dead - I thought she'd survive somehow because I can't see Jack making it without her. They're kind of joined at the hip. Speaking of Jack, I love him. How come i've never seen the actor who plays him? He's marvelous! 💖
I dont think I've seen Toby Schwartz before either, and he's an aussie. Brilliant actor. My brother said he constantly had everyone in fits of laughter.
Yep no doubt why marriages fall apart. It's a long time away from the family and not like they can just commute home every weekend. Possibly why these showrunners have quite a few real life couples on set.
I'll be seeing 407 soon so will let you know.

Ha, beat you to it! Just saw it after searching high and low for it online. My damn cable network carries it but apparently they don't show it concurrently with the rest of the world. I'll bet it will turn up in July or something - I just can't wait that long.
So I'll be interested to hear your opinion. I have several questions which I am confused about, the plot is certainly thickening....:D
Toby Schwartz is Australian? Jeez, thought he was a Brit from his accent. He is seriously good and absolutely shines in this episode. How confusing it must have been to have two lead actors with the same name, lol. When the series ends, I am going to binge watch all four seasons to get a better sense of continuity. The plots are so complicated sometimes, it's hard to appreciate everything. One thing is for sure, these actors are stellar!
I think they probably call them by either their last names or character names. Or just point and say 'hey you'. LOL no I don't think they do that.
Yeh Toby is aussie.
Toby Schmitz
Did I say Schwartz? See? I cant even get his un-aussie name right.
I still havent seen so leaving your spoiler for a bit.
As for the complication of plot, I think that's because, and back to my earlier comment, it;s dialogue turgid. Never bothered me initially but it was a complaint right from the beginning. Really started bothering me this season.

No I think I was the one who got his name wrong.
I don't mind the dialogue (and I just adore listening to Jack speak :D) and the plots are complicated so I think we need them. Unlike most of the viewers, I am bored to tears by battle scenes and fights so I could very well do without them, lol.
Oh and you can safely read my spoiler as it won't really spoil anything, it just gushes about the character.

I thought it was a good episode. Eleanor's Grandmother is great and she interacted with Jack in the best way. Also Jack copying Max's mode of speech was totally hilarious. I think they are setting the stage for Silver to fall out with Flint and most probably betray and kill him which I will hate. I'm glad Billy is back but would have been fine with Madi staying dead. I find her totally irritating. I wish they'd killed her off and not Eleanor.

Ok, I'm sure instruments and score were chosen for a reason - I just don't like the score, that's all. Not criticising the composer - we all have different tastes and the discordant, jangly music gives me a headache.
Bear uses authentic instruments from the era. It;s not meant to be dinner party music, but to unnerve the viewer and get them ready for 'battle'.

Ok lol, since I am not a "battle" type of person, I do find the music unnerving. Maybe that's why, lol. Hate battle and fights scenes as I've mentioned before. I'm not into violence and close my eyes whenever anyone gets graphically hurt. Would much rather watch James kiss Thomas. :D:p
PS-Come to think of it, that's why I gave up on your fave Hannibal. I just couldn't stomach the violence and the way they "artistically" arranged those murdered girls. The one with the body stuck in the antlers almost made me lose my lunch. Never watched again after that.
It's very jarring. I skip the opening credits which I absolutely love, or mute the tv.
I remember you telling me you didnt like the violence in Hannibal, and the NBC creatives let Bryan get away with a hell of a lot. It was incredibly gory (but that's ok because no evil nipples, butt cracks or peens, but that's NBC for you. Actually, Bryan did manage to get one sly scene of Will's nude bum. That was just after the announcement it wouldnt be renewed so I think he was giving them the bird).

I close my eyes when the zombies are re-killed on TWD, lol! Just hate to watch that junk with the squishy sound effects.
I always wonder why Americans get so upset over sex scenes and nudity but seem to adore watching something as violent as possible. We now get splattered blood, bullets entering and exiting a body, slit throats all in slow motion and with huge close-ups just in case we miss something. Ugh..... I find it disgusting and repelling.

Gosh Dani, we all have different opinions. How can it be "disrespect" that we don't all like the same things? Imagine what a boring place the world would be if we did? As my grandfather used to say: "if it it weren't for bad taste, the colour yellow would never be seen...." Used to crack me up no end as yellow was my Mum's favorite color. [laugh]

Well unfortunately, that tendency is far from being the sole preserve of IMDb. I find that ridiculous attitude all over the place nowadays starting with mainstream media. I seem to find they (and many others) have taken to calling anyone who doesn't vote the way they like "fascists" and "Nazis". Seems to me that is the beginning of the end of democracy as we know it. Scary - very scary indeed.

Black Sails 4.7: Jack Rackham and Fake News
Another really excellent Black Sails last night - 4.7 - with my favorite part being Jack Rackham giving a little exposition on fake news in newspapers versus truth in books, in Philadelphia.
It was great to see the Caribbean pirate in Philadelphia anyway, coping with the cold and snow on the ground, on a mission to see Eleanor's grandfather. But his denunciation of false stories about his friend Charles Vane to a wide-eyed young woman, and her response that the truth is less captivating, was just perfect.
Also in Philadelphia, the revelation that Eleanor's grandmother wields the power was a good twist, and consistent with the ease of power exercised by her granddaughter. And it also sets one of the powerful pieces against Flint, with Rackham off to kill him against all odds. History says Rackham won't survive and Stevenson says Flint will, but you never know.
And Rackham is just one of the big players now suddenly arising in an alliance against Flynt. Billy and Rogers are now working to together towards this end, and even Long John could (but likely won't) pivot away from Flynt. Madi surviving has changed Long John again (a reader pointed out to me that in Treasure Island, Long John is said to be married to a woman of "color," so it looks like Stevenson's story holds sway again as a postscript to Black Sails). As we see in coming attractions, if Flynt's plan to rescue Madi doesn''t succeed, then Billy's plan to use Madi to divide Flynt and Long John may well pay off. (But there was something thrilling in hearing Flynt talk about "sacking Boston," wasn't there? Or maybe that's just me as a New York Yankee fan talking.)
But back to Jack - that kiss he gave Ann sure looked final, didn't it? I hope not, but ...

Maybe we are meant to remember who he is. I have a terrible memory for faces so I have no idea if he has turned up before. I wonder if he is the guy Toby Stephens said turns up in the last episodes and is very loyal to Flint? Some people were speculating this could be Thomas but I think that is just a lot of wishful thinking. I don't think they want to remind people Flint is gay. The fanboys don't like it.

Black Sails: Penultimate
The high point of the next-to-last ever episode of Black Sails last night was when Flint shoots the guy who was about to shoot Long John, who was in the process of demanding that Flint give him the treasure, or fight with Flint to the death over it.
As in many decisive acts in this rich, multi-layered tapestry of a story, there is more than one interpretation or explanation for what Flint did.
Maybe it was out of love and admiration for Long John, which certainly had to have been a part of it.
And/or maybe it was Flint, ever quick and incisive in his calculation, knowing that Long John was of much greater value in the fight that loomed ahead, against the British and the Spanish, in Flint's attempt to create a new civilization of freedom.
In any case, it's the British attack on the pirate ship that causes Flint and Long John to halt in their duel, with an eye towards the common enemy. This creates the right backdrop for the final episode next week.
Of course, as I've been saying all season and earlier, history and Robert Louis Stevenson dictate who will survive and not survive this last battle we'll see in Black Sails. But I'm very much looking forward to seeing it, anyway.

I'm not interested in eavesdropping on them on twitter, or tumblr, or instagram or nywhere else. I also dont care if he got into an argument about brexit. I'm only interested in their acting, or if they do good things to bring awareness to charities or causes.
There were other people discussing Black Sails. The thread was started by one. I already said to you that maybe they arent up to date and dont want to see spoilers. One even said she isnt up to date. If there are a lot! of people talking about it on your other forum, that's great...until the finale tonight. Then what?
Never mind.

The finale was okay. Pretty emotional. It would be cool if we can get a new show based on Treasure Island.
They're not interested in during a show about Treasure Island. This was always a prequel. They moved on well before the show even finished. Terrible face plant of a good show.

Great, great, great. I was prepared for tragedy and death. Best of all is the Flint ending. :D Everything I could have hoped for and it almost reconciles me to the end of the show. Perfect!
I give them a 10 out 10. One of the best shows I've ever seen! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Black Sails: Farewell
Well, I can't say I was overjoyed about the Black Sails finale, and not just because I didn't want to see this vivid, vibrant series end.
I would have liked to see a little more connection between this ending, and what we know of our heroes based on Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island - of which Black Sails was explicitly presented as a prequel.
Black Sails ends with not even a hint of Flint becoming a pirate again. I have no problem with his giving it up for the man he loves, but I wanted to see at least a hint, a suggestion, of how he got back on the high seas again.
Otherwise, the ending was strong. Long John being turned away by his love is a good entree to his subsequent life with the skull and crossbones. Billy Bones surviving was necessary, as he, too, is spoken of by Stevenson.
Rackham was a real person in our history, and he did not have a happy ending. There was no indication of that in the Black Sails finale, other than a life of piracy cannot have a happy ending, but that was ok.
But back to Flint. Long John's strategy of giving Flint what he most wanted, so he would give up his quest to change the world didn't work as an ending even if we didn't know what Stevenson had in store for him. Finding Thomas could well have invigorated Flint, made him even stronger in his resolve, to right what he saw as wrongs in the world.
Still, if the finale was not as good as it could have been, the overall series was memorable and I'd highly recommend it. May piracy on the seas live forever as a form of fiction in print and on the screen.

Another review which gives a shout out to the actors and sets who certainly deserve praise:
It's full of spoilers so beware if you haven't seen the finale.
