Tacitus banned beloved Sexy Celebrity alter ego Database Errol this morning for making a controversial thread that used the same code found in the "I Love You" thread.

I/Errol was merely trying to do a modern, updated, 2014 version of the thread that tricks people into thinking the thread is all about them, when Tacitus ruined everything. Go ahead and laugh about it.

He threatened to ban me!!!!

It was crude, I admit. I made the thread under the "Database Errol" name for fear of the many nasty PM's and death threats I could have received under this name. Really -- Tacitus saved my behind by closing that thread. Now it just needs to disappear completely.

But, I thought... I always get a lot of nasty comments in "I Love You" about me being gay. The sequel thread could be all about calling everyone else gay. You know, to get back at them.

Even in 2014, the subject of homosexuality is still controversial enough to cause this to happen. How sad.

Many other websites don't even allow it as a default setting in the system, let alone allow somebody to make them and get away without a warning.

I'm a member of one forum that prohibits sock puppet accounts, and if you create one, your main account is banned as well. I just figured that was standard on all forums.

One interesting caveat to the rule, though, is that creating a sock puppet account is actually permitted on April Fool's Day. It's usually a fun day. :)

The April Fool's thing is an interesting idea.

Yeah, we technically prohibit such accounts, since it's an obvious way to circumvent banning, but we've made occasional exceptions when the accounts were clearly jokes, not overused, and overt enough that everyone could tell what was going on (we had one mod who had a Santa Clause account, for example). All within reason, of course.

I was a member on one forum that didn't police such things at all, and while it was pretty funny at times (I once replied to a fake Adolf Hitler by arguing as Dwight Eisenhower :D), it definitely engendered a lot of paranoia, and a lot of accusations about even members with thousands of posts actually being other members.

Yep. I don't really frequent that forum anymore, so I'm curious if they still do it. Since it has thousands of active members, though, I suspect it made for a difficult cleanup of dummy accounts for the mods afterward. I think you were supposed to delete your own sock puppets, but probably not everyone did. Or maybe the mods didn't care, I don't know.

The whole thing pretty much operated on the honor system, anyway. But the threat of getting your main account permanently banned kept everyone in line.

I do wonder if the thread -- which I had called "[insert your username here] is Gay" in case you're wondering -- with a post inside from Database Errol explaining that he had learned that [insert your username here] is gay and you just need to deal with it and not be a hater -- I do wonder if such a thread could have worked and grown in size if I had made it years ago, maybe right after "I Love You", before Tacitus joined this site and became a moderator.

Who knew Tacitus was so angry and bossy and domineering? He probably counts real sheep to sleep at night. You have a bunch of accounts, we usually don't allow any, and he banned exactly one--one that started a provocative thread. Downright restrained, if you ask me.
