Hi, I've never joined a movie forum before which is odd because it's probably my primary interest.
I enjoy a lot of older movies. My favourite filmmakers are probably Alfred Hitchcock, Fritz Lang, Nicholas Ray and Orson Welles, but I also like some newer directors like Paul Thomas Anderson and Ye Lou.
This site looks like a really nice place to be, hopefully I'll enjoy posting on here! :)

Very interesting! The only Sixth Generation Chinese filmmaker I've seen so far is Jia Zhang-ke, but I'm definitely interested in more. Welcome to the forums

I've only seen Platform and 24 City so I wouldn't say I've seen enough of Zhangke's films to make a judgement, but from what I have seen he's a very gifted filmmaker! I've just bought The World on DVD so I'll check that out soon also.
Suzhou River is by far my favourite Lou Ye film. I couldn't recommend it more :)

Thanks for the warm welcomes everyone!
T_L_P has been banned.
Background: this was ThomasP, a member who was caught plagiarizing reviews awhile ago (he was doing the same on his blog). We were very lenient about it at the time, and he admitted fault and asked to be banned, but eventually reconsidered and asked for another chance. We agreed...and then he inexplicably did it again almost immediately.
Same kind of thing with this name: when we noticed who he was, we said he could have yet another chance if he simply explained who he was in this thread. I told him that lots of highly respected members had made similar mistakes early on, and it's easily forgotten and forgiven. He agreed, and then proceeded to simply not do it, even after I both reminded and warned him.
I can't fathom what his thought process was through most of this; all I know is that he's wasted a lot of our time.
The Gunslinger45

Oh snap!
Other bannings have been way more dramatic and interesting, but this one's just weird: I can't even wrap my head around why someone would admit fault and then immediately do it again, as if we wouldn't notice. Or why they would promise to come clean publicly and then just sort of sit on their hands for a few days, like we're going to just forget we asked. Total moderation timesink.

I remember the guy who was banned for being a prick and was so stuck up about insisting on calling movies "films," got banned, started another account posing as someone else all so he could say he was not being pretentious.
What a douche.
If we're thinking about the same guy, then I'm pretty sure holds the record (by a wide margin) for most times banned. And he kept coming back every so often even months later. Incredibly stubborn, even though he was caught easily each time.
On the plus side, that guy burned through so many disposable email address services that he was inadvertently a really useful research assistant in tracking them all down for us, so we could ban each in turn. Dude was the most unintentionally useful pretentious ass ever.

So that bullsh!t ultimately had a point?
http://cdn.meme.li/i/jjk0a.jpg
Only when breaking their promise would be completely irrational. In this case he was promising to do something to avoid banning, and not doing it would get him banned, so his behavior was pretty much inexplicable.

That's just silly, though. You wouldn't have banned him if he had just come out and told everyone who he really was?
Correct. AM I NOT MERCIFUL?!
But seriously, plagiarizing is usually done by newer members, and usually it's just out of insecurity and not maliciousness. They worry that their opinions won't be up to snuff. And since some of our oldest, most respected members made that kind of mistake when they started out, I think it makes sense to be really understanding about it. And it usually works out: most people don't indulge that forgiveness the way this guy did.

I just think this guy probably went, "Screw you, I'm not gonna confess" while going, "Ummhmm! Yup! I'll do that. Sure."
There's something about your cheery, optimistic attitude that is very "Mommy On Ignore" -- meaning your threats are too lenient and don't seem serious and it makes them behave in the bad manner anyway because, who cares? Mommy is willing to forgive. She'll just accept a stupid apology and be done with it. But then when they're bad, Mommy comes in and rages hellfire and throws out the punishments and the groundings and suddenly Mommy is the not-so-serious bitch from Hell.
You have to just lay down the law -- AND BAN. Or say, "One more chance and if you blow it, you're gone for good." None of this, "Now say you're sorry. Now go apologize. Go tell them what you did!"
No, other stuff. Mostly from professional reviewers, I think it was. It wasn't very well hidden, either; it sounded totally different from some of his other posts.
I can't figure out why he thought anything he did would work, or not be noticed, or whatever, other than the initial plagiarism of course.

He constantly does. This is the problem.

It's only over-representing if I deliberately go out of my way to find a word I don't already know, or would not otherwise use, simply to impress people. And I do that almost exactly 0% of the time.
As you say, outlier is not an unusual word. And when I read someone else who uses the occasional word I don't know (as opposed to a barrage of them, which is usually a sign of insecurity), I take it as a reason to learn more words, not to demand that they stop showing me new ones.
So, to each their own. But this is how I actually talk, and I do it because it best conveys what I want to say. I don't dress it up or talk all that differently online than I do in real life. How you guys react to it is your business.

"Outlier" isn't a particularly uncommon word. It's often used in things to do with statistics - a statistical outlier is a data point that doesn't seem to fit the trend shown by the rest of the data. Thus, metaphorically, it can also be used to describe a person like that.

It's your general attitude. Every time I turn around now, you say a word I've never used before. You're like an intellectual Conky the Robot from Pee Wee's Playhouse, ready to spit out some big word everyday. It's bound to get on the nerves of people.
I'm not sure why you decided to launch into a completely unsolicited (and off-topic) personality audit, but it kinda sounds like you're just describing your own reaction and phrasing it as a warning about "people."
But if there are actually people out there who get annoyed at hearing a word they don't know from time to time, my response to them would be to get over it. If something like that gets on their nerves, then I suspect their nerves already lead a very difficult life.
It's only over-representing if I deliberately go out of my way to find a word I don't already know, or would not otherwise use, simply to impress people. And I do that almost exactly 0% of the time.

I think people get annoyed because they have to refer to a dictionary or Google when they don't know a word. I personally have no problem with this. Learning a new word is a satisfying experience, really. Everyone should strive to expand their vocabulary.

As I said earlier, Yoda's treatment of this guy who got banned wasn't correct because he shouldn't have asked the person to confess who he was with everybody, or else he'd get banned. You are just asking for someone to NOT confess that way. I am not surprised by the way this guy acted, although Yoda is.
Add to that Yoda and his outlier words and you've got yourself a bomb. I am merely saying that I think Yoda should change his approach with people. No asking others to do embarrassing things. No speaking to them with words they may not know. Then, I believe, there will be less problems.

You should read William Styron's Sophie's Choice and keep a dictionary handy. It's the only time I've seen the word catholic used to mean universal instead of referring to the religion.
