The Usual Suspects

The Usual Suspects is a film directed by Bryan Singer and written by Christopher Mcquarrie. A story based around 5 criminals who all meet unexpected in a memorable police line up for something that none of them had done. Starring Stephen Baldwin, Kevin Spacey, Benicio Del Toro, Chazz Palminteri, Kevin Pollak, Pete Postlethwaite and Gabriel Byrne. The film is set in a police station where the only survivor of the five, explains what happened on that very night that they all died and does this by going back in time to how it all started, using flashbacks and narration. The usual suspects is a well scripted thriller that keeps you guessing throughout till the end when the story surprises everyone with what actually happened on that winters night on the dock. Contains violence and disturbing language. The film does though keep to the modern crime thriller of ’who done it’ which what many audiences enjoy as they try to work out “Who is Keyser Soze” and what he is?’

Kevin Spacey in particular performs outstanding and deserves his nomination for a Oscar for his role of the Roger Kint, a dodgy skinny man who struggles to walk with a limp that narrates the events of the night at the dock. As he does in American beauty narrating in such a way that gets the audience to feel and see exactly what he says in such a way that makes the audience intrigued and to sit forward and watch, the same kind of role that he plays in LA Confidential that gets the critics trying to find holes to pick out of his performances that they cant. Stephen Bladwin had the luck of getting a role that would go down as the greatest film that he would star in, with accolades to him, as he played the role really well and with his stylish beard gave of the thuggish look Mcquarrie would have been looking for when he wrote the script. Gabriel Byrne playing the ‘leader role’ in the team of five that the others looked up to, played his role perfectly with his no nonsense impression. Byrne would also go on to do Ghost ship and Assault on prescient 13 because of how well usual suspects went. The other two of the five had a less important role out of the five with Chazz and Kevin bowing out the film the earliest where we didn’t really get to see much background on these two and gave the impression they were only there to make the team.

Bryan Singer’s masterpiece was the making of his career, as he would then go on to direct the first two x men films and keep with the superhero genre of superman returns which he surprisingly chose over the third X-Men film. Singer gets a lot of credit for the film but Mcquarrie must not be forgotten as the way the script was written and the cast assembled by him was real brilliance as I wouldn’t like to say anyone in film ever does anything perfect his selection to the cast was near to brilliance. Chris also went on to do screenplay for the first X-Men and Valkarie because is accolades he received from the usual suspects. With a five and a half time period for the film to have been done by this gives the impression at the hard work that would have been put in by everyone involved by especially to Singer to make sure it was as good as the script had been addressed.

To conclude this film wont be for everyone as I believe its for a real certain taste in film but for anyone that enjoys a well written and directed film then The Usual Suspects is the one for you because it has what all thrillers have but more by going past the boundaries that its previous thrillers had put in place. A film that even after the film has you trying to piece together all the pieces in your head as you still cant get your head around what happened, but when you do gets you talking as the pride you get in understanding what had happened. Coming up to its 20th year since coming out it wouldn’t be a lie to say this film will still be shown to people in the next twenty years. Lastly if you want to see a film that has five great actors all bouning there acting off each other in such a well written way this film does this as the film compliments the actors and there careers they would go onto to enjoy afterwards.
