How long we gotta wait for this?
I'm sensing a film reel.;)
I'd say that's a pretty good guess.
How long we gotta wait for this?
Hard to say. I've had to churn through a handful of graphics designers, and there are still some crucial elements in the works.
I'd hoped to make a big push to get something out before the end of the year. At this point I'm pretty determined to get it up sooner rather than later, even if that means it being only 80% as good as I'd wanted. I can always tweak and polish it up while it's live, if the basic elements are there already. :) And that way I can utilize some feedback, too.

Is this a new design for the whole site? Or just some updated logo's and what not.
The whole thing. New logo, new layout, and alternate versions of the site specifically designed for phones and iPads.
It's also going to mean some new features, but because of the layout delays I'll probably implement those after/while the design is up over a series of months.

Great idea. Making it easy for the smartphone users should help traffic overall.

Finally! A mobile version!
Technically you should be seeing a mobile version already. If you visit on your phone and it doesn't look different, check the top right corner above the banner ad for a link to switch. It's kind of plain and really slapped together, but it'll be better than the full site for now.
That said, yeah, the new mobile version is gonna be wayyyyyy slicker. Really pleasant to use.

Oh, don't worry. It'll be roughly that size on the mobile version (and actually smaller on the iPad version, most likely), but if anything the desktop version's logo might be too big.

Oh, that's just something I threw together months ago, just so we'd have something semi-usable. The new one's going to be sooooo much better. Of the three new layouts being designed (desktop, tablet, smartphones), I think the smartphone one is the coolest.
Speaking of which...

You know the real Yoda wasn't a tease at all.
Except for that part where he let Luke think he was someone else for hours.
Strong point. Damn your good at arguing.
Don't worry, I'm only teasing because we're not too far away from finishing this up. I'm tentatively shooting for sometime next month. By then I at least want it to the point where I can give a few lucky MoFos an advance beta test to iron out any kinks.
I'm sure it will be great. You have the coolest forum on the internet as far as I am concerned.
Ah, thanks man. :) Hopefully you guys'll dig it even more once we get the technology up to date. The new version is gonna be wayyyyyy cleaner from a design standpoint.
Huge amount of work on the mobile style over the last 2-3 days. It's coming along so well that it's probably going to force me to go back and improve the tablet version, even!
Really couldn't be much more excited about the mobile style right now; it's got tons of little details designed to make using the site as easy as possible, which really goes a long way on those smaller screens.

I agree with you completely. One of the main goals with the redesign has actually been simplifying things even further: the new site is going to be even cleaner and put even more emphasis on the posts themselves. So while it is going to be drastic in the sense of looking very different, I think it'll appeal to people for the same kinds of reasons.
A good example of the necessity comes from looking at the individual posts. I'd say the site layout overall is straightforward and clean, but the posts themselves are fairly cluttered, which was probably inevitable given all the features we've added over the years. Just too much information, added piecemeal over the years, to display elegantly without starting fresh.
The new design philosophy, more or less, is: make it easy to find something when you want it, but keep it mostly invisible beforehand.

Hurry up! Unleash this beast!
It'll almost certainly be post-Holidays (though a few of you might get to test drive it pretty soon thereafter). There's still a fair number of decisions to be made about how individual pages will look and a few crucial graphics still being designed. But the whole project took a huge leap forward in the last two weeks or so.
Plus, I want to give you MoFos one more Christmas snow with the old look before retiring it.

Now I know you probably can't design it, but it would be fun if the snow that fell down on Movie Forums was like actual snow and we had a blizzard and the snow blocked the links to certain subforums and threads so that you couldn't click on them -- like actual, obstructive snow that got in the way and made a mess.
Of course people could also just find the links to those places and enter them in the web address bar to get there, but that would be like an alternate route/cleared way to get there. A shortcut.
It won't be anywhere near that elaborate, but there is going to be a slight wrinkle this year.

Had some really great creative breakthroughs these past few days, and things are actually at the point where if we had to launch the desktop version more or less as it looks now, I could live with that. In celebration of that, here's another tiny glimpse:

The Rodent

Does that mean my avatar backgrounds won't match the surrounding graphic?
You should launch the desktop version when the '80s Countdown starts.
Wish I could (and even more, I wish I could launch it to coincide with the Oscar nominations tomorrow), but there's still way too much to do. Even if I locked the basic design right now I'd have a number of specific pages to finish off, and then I'd have to work out the integration with the forum template system and write a number of scripts to handle some of the new functionality.
So there's still a bit to do, but the creative stuff is really close. And that's the slow, difficult part for me because you can't really rush it and it's not always clear what the precise end goal is. Definitely looking forward to getting down to the technical side of things soon.
Does that mean my avatar backgrounds won't match the surrounding graphic?
Yeah, avatars won't be on gray backgrounds any more, if that's what you mean. But you can keep yours on them and it'll still look good on the darker background.
Actually, one of the things I like about the new thread layout is how it really draws the eye to the avatars. They really stand out great on the new background. I think yours'll be really eye catching on it.

Thanks! And you can probably guess what those two icons are for.
One of my favorite things in the new design has to do with the avatars, too; I came up with it near the very beginning, and it's one of the few things that hasn't really changed since then, through all the iterations. It's one of the ways the new thread pages are able to contain all the same basic links and information but look a lot cleaner. Looking forward to showing it to you guys. :)

Swank.
I think you guys are going to go ape for the new profiles, in particular. I could not be happier with how they've come out. I had the structure of the page figured out months ago but I did a lot of polishing over the last week and it really feels like it's become the best possible version of itself.
One of the things I decided really early on is that, while I want the entire site to look nice (eventually; a few of the sections might be a little slapped together at launch), it makes sense to really obsess over the pages people are going to spend the most time on: forums, threads, and profiles. And I think the extra attention those three layouts have gotten has really paid off.

Do you have a launch date set?
Not a firm one, no. I'd really like to get it up before the Oscars, IE: sometime in February. And I've made enough progress over the last 2 weeks to make that at least plausible.
However, if that does happen, it's pretty clear I'll have to just do a bare-bones update on a few sections and pages. IE: new colors and headers and footers and all that, but otherwise laid out the same as they are now, but polished and improved more thoroughly post-launch. Trying to keep that to a minimum, though, and balance it against getting the design up sooner.
Decisions, decisions.
Is it weird that I give these kinds of projects little code names in my head? Because I totally do.

http://s3-ec.buzzfed.com/static/enhanced/web04/2012/7/16/10/anigif_enhanced-buzz-11661-1342447920-9.gif
Then I started to have trouble and got frustrated.
http://s3-ec.buzzfed.com/static/enhanced/web03/2012/7/16/10/anigif_enhanced-buzz-30486-1342447807-4.gif
And I wasn't even sure what to try, or how.
http://s3-ec.buzzfed.com/static/enhanced/terminal05/2012/7/16/10/anigif_enhanced-buzz-21770-1342449890-21.gif
And every time someone would ask me how it was going or if there was an ETA, I'd be all:
http://s3-ec.buzzfed.com/static/enhanced/terminal05/2012/7/16/12/anigif_enhanced-buzz-659-1342456499-13.gif
I realized I'd already spent months on a redesign that was still in the initial concept phase; I hadn't finished the general layout, to say nothing of the specific pages or any of the hard work of technically integrating it. But I was already committed.
http://s3-ec.buzzfed.com/static/enhanced/web04/2012/7/16/10/anigif_enhanced-buzz-11635-1342448084-11.gif
And then I sort of just broke down for awhile.
http://s3-ec.buzzfed.com/static/enhanced/terminal05/2012/7/16/10/anigif_enhanced-buzz-21621-1342448472-2.gif
http://s3-ec.buzzfed.com/static/enhanced/terminal05/2012/7/16/10/anigif_enhanced-buzz-21621-1342448885-6.gif
But I knew from experience that, as slow and frustrating as it was to just collect ideas and try things now and then, it was the only way to produce a layout worth using, so I decided to just keep trying things until enough good ideas fell into place.
http://s3-ec.buzzfed.com/static/enhanced/terminal05/2012/7/16/10/anigif_enhanced-buzz-21396-1342448282-3.gif
Things were getting better, but at the same time I'd been staring at some of this stuff for way too long. I couldn't even tell what was good any more.
http://s3-ec.buzzfed.com/static/enhanced/web03/2012/7/16/10/anigif_enhanced-buzz-30486-1342449343-12.gif
So I got some more opinions, kept trying things, and then it really started to come together.
http://s3-ec.buzzfed.com/static/enhanced/terminal05/2012/7/16/10/anigif_enhanced-buzz-21879-1342449439-17.gif
http://s3-ec.buzzfed.com/static/enhanced/terminal05/2012/7/16/10/anigif_enhanced-buzz-15593-1342447808-12.gif
And now most of the work is done and things are falling into place, and pretty soon I'll be like this:
http://s3-ec.buzzfed.com/static/enhanced/web03/2012/7/16/10/anigif_enhanced-buzz-31235-1342447824-9.gif

Is the fact that the Movie Lists only show the AFI ones and the pagination has changed to only to to previous/next/first/last instead of jumping like 10, because of new design changes?
Also I have noticed recently, reading topics does not mark them as read like it should do all the time, so when I use today's posts option, it is hard to tell what I have already read sometimes. Is this a site thing or a problem from my end?
Is the fact that the Movie Lists only show the AFI ones and the pagination has changed to only to to previous/next/first/last instead of jumping like 10, because of new design changes?
Yes and yes. The former is because the lists shown are going to be capped (probably at 6) with a link to view the rest, so as a result you'll have a tool to decide what order you want them to display in.
The pagination might change back depending on how people respond, though it was done to try to stop it from becoming too wide, since the name of the game on the new layout is to keep things as clean and simple as possible.

Haven't done anything on this front, I don't think. Is this new or something you're maybe just noticing now? It's not supposed to mark them read immediately, I don't think. It's more on a per-visit basis.

Hmmm, yes it's new, been happening for a week now, I'll have to check my browser settings or something see if anything has changed, or google as it might be to do with cookies/caché? It used to mark the threads as read as soon as I'd view them, so I'd click "Today's Posts", open all the threads I'd want to read, read them, click it again and I could easily see what I hadn't read.

If I remember correctly, this thing used to let you skip pages ahead of a thread -- like it might have 3 up there instead of 4, or 2, anything that skips ahead more than just the next page. Lately I've noticed it only shows the page before it or the page ahead, nothing further back or further ahead.

The little white arrow to the right of the page numbers, you can type in the page you want...
The little white arrow, amusingly, isn't currently working on the new style, and I'm having to make some tough decisions about what's absolutely necessary for the launch and what's not, so there might be a period of a couple of weeks post-redesign while I'm still integrating stuff like that.
I figure most of you would rather this thing be 80% done (with all really crucial functionality) and live a lot sooner than wait another month or two for it to be perfect out of the game.

Yeah, I'll remember this month.
So, I've been browsing the forums with the new style (well, mostly--obviously I'm still polishing it) for the last week or two, only now and then switching back to check things. And now I'm using it for more than a few minutes at a time, and I dunno how you guys put up with it.
Seriously, gross. You people are way too easy to please.
And while I'm here, might as well:

So when do you think the new layout will be ready? :)
Got Monday off, so I'm rolling through as many to-do items as possible. Good start so far this afternoon. Fairly optimistic this thing'll be ready for testing early next week. Wish me luck. :)

So when do you think the new layout will be ready? :)
I'm working like mad to have it live by the end of the month, IE: in time for the Oscars. I'm picking a few select people to test it probably as soon as this week.
As it is I'm going to be cutting some corners--a few of the sections are going to be essentially the same, but just sort of shoved into the new layout/colors. But the most-used parts will be new in almost every way, so I figure that'll work fine, and I can update the rest after the launch. Better than waiting another month or two, at least.
Thanks for all your hard work Yods :yup:
