I was persuaded to see this. When I saw the trailer, my impression was:

1) Robert Redford at a fairly good looking 77, is way too old to be challenging the open ocean in a small sailboat. He should be on a Carnival cruise.

2) As scary as it looks, the fact that we se this story makes me expect that he will get back alive.

In All is Lost, Redford plays a guy who is crossing the Indian Ocean in a small sailboat. His boat collides with a abandoned shipping container and has a big hole in its hull. Things go downhill from there, extreme weather, a sinking boat, a huge ocean, no communications, in short, this guy is f**ked and nobody will ever know what happened to him unless help arrives deus ex machina.

This is almost a wordless movie since there is nobody to talk to. The isolation and fear from a huge storm and a damaged boat is visceral. It has a cast of one; there is NOBODY to help. Redford seems still vigorous in spite of his age, makes no attempt to look younger (aside from the obvious hair coloring, but he does still HAVE hair), is very convincing as a guy who is very resourceful, but facing a seemingly hopeless situation. Even though I thought I knew how it would come out, it was a nail biter. If you can't get into the latest Thor retread, it's worth seeing.

SPOILER ALERT:

Did anyone see this movie and wants to give their thoughts concerning the ending of it ? Supposedly it can have three scenarios . 1. He was actually rescued. 2. He imagined it. 3. He went over to the afterlife .

I personally believe in number 2, that he imagined the rescue. My reason is that what would a small life boat be doing out in the middle of the Ocean that picked him up ?

Skizzzerflake, so which ending do you think is correct for the film.

Also I was surprised that his end came so quickly when others have claimed to have survived for months out there, supposedly living on Sea Turtles ,if it is true ?

Yeh 2/3 in my eyes too, not actually being saved but it's more symbolic of him dying and passing over into whatever, notice the editing and the flash of white.

I have no idea if that's true or not but I'd guess that it would be unlikely and difficult depending on circumstances such as equipment and location. Anyway I think he kind of accepted it was all or nothing, and risked it all started the fire, when he fails, he accepts his fate and peacefully passes over.

Yes, but he would have been better off starting the fire when one of those big cargo ships went by and not when he imagined seeing a small lifeboat.

I'll stick with the unimaginative ending...he was rescued at the last moment. I hate to think that he went on so long and was resourceful enough to last as long as he did, just to bite the dust.

I wish someone had rescued me from this movie.

Actually it wasn't " so long " because it was only eight days wasn't it ? I would believe in the rescue except for the fact that what would a small life raft be doing in the middle of the Ocean ?

As a fisherman, I am a little perturbed that he gave up after 1 try. Good movie though.
