My wife was in the mood for a Rom-Com so I consented, but About Time is so much more than that. It seemed like a British Groundhog Day rerun, where gawky guy finds out the family secret that the men can go back in time. This gives him chances at do-overs in failed bar pickups. Things get more complicated when he meets a lady he really likes. One thing leads to another and "Tim" finds out his gift has much larger consequences. He can fix things for other people, but has to be careful because things don't always end up as you expect. In the end, this movie is much more about enjoying the small things in life, understanding just how transient it all really is and finding out what you really value. It sounds saccharine, but it works quite well.

Domhall Gleeson is excellent as Tim and Rachel McAdams is her usual lovable self as his wife Mary. Bill Nighy also excels as Tim's eccentric father and time travel guide. The rest of the British cast is also quite good. This movie could have been groaningly over-sentimental, but It managed to squeak past even my hard shelled cynicism and seemed to leave half of the audience teary. Production is excellent, sets in London and Cornwall take you to Britain for a couple hours and the whole thing really works.
