"What would you do if you were a famous pianist and I cut off one of your arms?"
"I'd be a famous painter!"
This started out good. Bizarre mystical images and a story teller. I thought, dialogue in an Alejandro Jodorowsky flick? And story development?! And this early on?! I loved the whole intro and the love between Fando and Lis. Then... everything went sour. Fando turned out to be a psychotic ****ing *******, apparently they messed up when they supposedly took the madness stone out of his head when he was a child. I don't like hating the main character of a movie. And of course the story just stopped explaining itself and decided to just happen and rely on imagery in a manner that only Jodorowsky can think of. His first feature length film, and his worst, which is expected. His imagery becomes more bizarre and beautiful in his later works.

Fando and Lis is a 4 film to me. I was quite suprised I liked it so much. I only agree with you about later Jodorovsky films being better, except Santa sangre, which I stopped watching after 5 minutes or so, because it looked like a Fellini flick. Yeah, I know, that other Jodorovsky films are also similar to Fellini's works, but in this one the similarity was so strong I didn't want to continue watching it. Maybe I'll watch it in the future, though. The Holy Mountain was a shock to me and I was shocked even more at how much I liked it, considering it's got some sacreligious scenes. Now I don't care about such scenes in cinema at all, but at the time it was quite a shock to me. And yes, it wasn't that long ago. El Topo is my favourite Jodorovsky and in my humble opinion his masterpiece, being an acid western with metaphysical and religious themes to it. Perfect combination.
