View Full Version : Hardware
Have any of you seen the film Hardware. It is a really good film.
It's more like an art project than a horror film. It works on so many levels and the non-stereotipical hollywood edge works very well for it.
There is also alot of cameos by rock singers like Iggy Pop and the lead singer fom Ministry.
To view it at it's best turn down the contrast so it's nearly black and white, now the only colour that comes up is blue. This makes the film seem more of a stand out.
:yup:

Mostly ignored on release and pretty much labelled as a cheap "Terminator" knock off this is infact a very imaginitive and original sci fi.
Littered with deeper meaning and purpose the film is a sensory delight as aggresive camera and lighting descisions are displayed. Director Richard Stanley delivers a bold and daring the movie. Some of the acting is a litte sketchy but who cares when so many ideas are raised and the cinematography and music is constantly grabbing your attention.
Dylan Mcdermont is surprisingly good and all the cast if nothing else create memorable charecters thanks to the script and atmospheric tension.
A really interesting Sci Fi that has that raw student feel of Lucas' THX-1138.
...'scuse my flickering memory but...
is that the one based in an isolated city in/surrounded by desert. A junk collector/renovator finds the head of a recent mechanical-robot-creation etc etc.
Is that the one? If it is i kind of dug the moodiness of it and the different cynical take on things. It attacked the main terminator themes but also touched on a wider spread of "human" issues too, for me as well.
hope that's the right film

That sounds like Battle Angel Alita, the 2-episode anime OAV. Then again, I presume that's not the only one of its sort.

That's the one. Right on another fan....
for sure.... i thought they painted a really "close"/sweaty and claustrophoic feel at times in the building where some of them lived etc. [as well as a weird austerity/detachedness added to their daily lives - i seem to remember feeling] The creature stalking round there was spooky n'all.
It's achilles heel seemed a little silly - but SPOILER:
i guess water was rare/precious in that future-world - yet they had a shower!? isn't that where they finally defeated it?? b4 the announcement of all the other AIs of the same model getting made/soon to be released etc (and making jobs - b4 reducing the unemployement figures further on deployment... v.cynical ;))
Kong works with a fellow who swears up and down that Hardware is the worst film ever made. Kong hasn't seen the film, but he has listened to this guy rant for hours about it.
heheheh, i can imagine someone hating it. The acting was stilted etc as Deckard said, and it has a very different vibe to the average hollywood take on such themes (which also means occasional shoddyness etc - hell, i think it might even have been british. Maybe that's why he hated it? ;))
I remember thinking a certain phallic-ish use of a drill or something was a bit cheesy.
'side from that it's a fun dark slightly-jumpy little tale, as i remember.

Wasn't that Tetsuo ? I mean, two films with phallic drill sequences...this world is not ready :D

Heheheh - this one was only semi-phallic coz it was coming out of his chest, i believe. Erm, you'd have to see it.
