Since a lot of members are sharing their favourite films I figured I could shared mine as well.
75
Rosemary's Baby
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/ef/Rosemarys_baby_poster.jpg
It's a fantastic movie. The only reason it's not on my top 30 is because I don't like the ending.
74
Se7en
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/6/68/Seven_(movie)_poster.jpg/220px-Seven_(movie)_poster.jpg
The firs time I watched it I thought it was a 7/10 a decent movie. I rewatched it recently and I loved it. Specially the ending.
73
Jaws
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/eb/JAWS_Movie_poster.jpg
I watched it for the first time this year and I wasn't disappointed. The only issue I had with it is that the first part was good, but not fantastic like the boat sequence.
72
Mallrats
http://www.sugarandspikesrocks.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/mall-ratsxart.jpg
I know it's not the greatest movie of all time, but I just love it. The dialogue is extremely funny and Jay and Silent Bob are at their best.
71
Paths of Glory
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51TDZ1EGVPL.jpg
It's a fantastic movie, but not a movie that i'd rewatch over and over again like I do with Mallrats. Nonetheless it's one of the movies that touched me the most.

Good to see Mallrats get some love! An excellent film from one of my favorite directors! And Jay and Silent Bob are hilarious in this film!

Rosemarys Baby is one of my all time favorite films, Mia Darrow is stunning, an it's just all around fascinating. Se7en is another stunning thriller, with a terrific end. Paths of Glory might be the saddest war film ever, well after Brothers. Great set
Really looking forward to this. Great picks so far. Jaws and Se7en are both in my Top 50 films.

Sin City
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/9/9e/Sincitypostercast.jpg/220px-Sincitypostercast.jpg
Directed by Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller
Written by Frank Miller
Starring Mickey Rourke, Clive Owen, Bruce Willis, Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson and many more !
The Story is great, but the style and the way is shot is just something I have never in any other movies. It really as a comic book atmosphere. My favourite part of the movie is the storyline of Marv played by Mickey Rourke.
69
No Country for Old Men
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/8/8b/No_Country_for_Old_Men_poster.jpg/220px-No_Country_for_Old_Men_poster.jpg
Written & Directed by The Coen brothers
Starring Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, Tommy Lee Jones, Woody Harrelson and many more !
My favourite movie from the Coen brothers. It's a great thriller with great acting and great direction. Anton Chigurh is one of the most interesting villains I've seen in movie. The scene in the gas station is so amazing and made me think a lot.
68
Ponyo
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/b/b3/Ponyo.jpg/220px-Ponyo.jpg
Written and Directed by Hayao Miyazaki
It might not be the best movie from Miyazaki, but it's still a fantastic movie and one of the best looking movie I've seen. The visuals are colorfull and it's definitely the kind of movie that when you watch it you can't help, but to smile.
67
Do The Right Thing
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/2/22/DO_THE_RIGHT_THING.jpg/220px-DO_THE_RIGHT_THING.jpg
Written & Directed by Spike Lee
Starring Spike Lee, Danny Aiello, Ossie Davis, John Turturro, Bill Nunn, Ruby Dee and many more !
I se this movie as one of the biggest anti violence movies I've seen. What I mean is when they all start destroying the restaurant it's for nothing. It just shows us how pointless can violence be and that we should ask ourselves questions before doing something stupid. Maybe that wasn't the objective of Spike Lee when he made it, but that's how it affected me.
Nice to see Ponyo make a favourites list. One of the best animated movies I've seen.

Aww man what happened, now you got to crap films Sin City and No Country for Old men, which I'll never get the acclaim to, while Sin City I just personally don't like. Plus a Miyazaki and Spike Lee film :p , both of those look alright actually

Mia Darrow is stunning
She might be, but she ain't in Rosemary's Baby. Mia Farrow is, and she's fugly. :p
Jaws, Se7en, Mallrats, Do The Right Thing and Sin City? Oh, hell yeah.
Keep 'em coming, PG. :)
Pussy Galore
09-08-13, 10:12 PM
Sin City I understand. You either love or hate it because the style is really different.
No Country for Old Men what don't you like about it?
It's not the best Miyazaki, but it's a really visually beautiful movie and for Do The Right Thing you have to watch it it's a masterpiece!

Good stuff. Rosemary's Baby and Jaws are my favorites so far

Jaws, Se7en, Rosemary's Baby, No Country for Old Men, and Sin City are all personal favorites.
Do the Right Thing is great, and is almost a personal favorite.
I'd like to see Paths of Glory and Mallrats.
I was going to say that I'll never see Ponyo. But if I ever see one of those films playing on cable, I'll try it for the hell of it.

I love No Country for Old Men as well! The first time I saw it, I thought Anton and Moss were the main players, and Javier especially was brilliant. But watching it again, I found Tommy Lee Jones's story to be really fascinating. I think he might be the main character after all.

Written & Directed by Hayao Miyazaki
It might be a really simple story, but it's just pure fun. Characters in Miyazaki movies are humans at their purest. And again a very beautiful movie visually
65
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/f/fc/Indiana_Jones_and_the_Last_Crusade_A.jpg/220px-Indiana_Jones_and_the_Last_Crusade_A.jpg

It's just pure fun. Funny, action packed and Indy hates nazies.

Almost Famous

Written & Directed by Cameron Crowe
Starring Billy Crydup, Frances McDormand, Patrick Fugit, Kate Hudson, Zooey Deschanel and many more !
I watched this movie for the first time 2 weeks ago and I was blown away. Being a huge rock fan I can't imagine a movie that depict the spirit of rock n roll more than this one. The scene where they sing Tiny Dancer is fantastic
63
The Birds
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c0/The_Birds_original_poster.jpg/220px-The_Birds_original_poster.jpg
Directed by Alfred Hitchcock
Written by Daphnee Du Maurier (book), Evan Hunter (screenplay)
Starring Tippi Hedren , Rod Taylor, Jessica Tandy and many more !
I'm a HUGE Hitchcock fan. This man as made so many great movies and The Birds is definitely one of them. Many people say that the birds themselves are awfully made and that the special effects doesn't stand the test of time, but I disagree. At least he tried something I have not seen many movies before 1962 that made these kind of special effects efforts. In addition to that Tippi Hedren is one of the most beautiful women I've seen in my life.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/6/69/UmbertoD.jpg/220px-UmbertoD.jpg
Directed by Vittorio De Sica
Written by Cesare Zavattini
Starring Carlo Battisti and many more unknown Italian actors
It's a simple story about a man and his dog trying to survive in italia after the second world war. A beautiful simplistic movie. I like The Bicycle Thief by the same director, but I prefer Umberto D
61
Notorious (1946)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/2/23/Notorious_poster.jpg/220px-Notorious_poster.jpg
Directed by Alfred Hitchcock
Written by Ben Hecht
Starring Ingrid Bergman, Cary Grant, Claude Rains and many more
An other Hitchcock masterpiece. I'm not really into romantic movies, but the chemistry between Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman is really special. I like the suspense and the thrill aspect of it like pretty much every Hitchcock movie. One of the best of the master of suspense !

Really glad you didn't include the third in the original Star Wars "trilogy" - it is very much inferior to the other two and is closer in quality to episodes 1, 2 & 3 IMO :)

The Birds, Seven and Indiana Jones 3 are pretty good to me also but not a masterpieces. Jaws is almost a masterpiece but I think it has suffered a bit from overexposure (given it's influence I have already watched all it's tropes 100 times before watching the original for the 1st time).

Agreed. It still has a lot of explosions, decent performances and epic space battles so it is a good movie.
Haven't seen the first two but I did just watch Bicycle Thieves yesterday (enjoyed it) and Notorious is on my long Hitchcock watchlist.
I was crushed by the ending of Bicycle Thieves. I am now even afraid of watching it again.

I have seen the film Jaws.It is so surprise. And it is style of film i love.
I was crushed by the ending of Bicycle Thieves. I am now even afraid of watching it again.
It definitely built towards the end. I really liked the style - I enjoy movies about everyday people battling to get by. That's why I like Iranian movies so much - and after seeing Bicycle Thieves it's easy to tell where Iranian cinema gets it's influences.
In relation to being afraid to watch it again, I know what you mean. Lars von Trier's Dancer in the Dark was like that for me. A 10/10 movie but I will never watch it again - emotion in movies is great but sometime you only want to subject yourself to it once :).

An underrated Hitchcock in my opinion. I watched it because it was Hitchcock with Grace Kelly and Cary Grant so I thought it could jut be good. It was even better than I imagined another really intriguing well made thriller.

http://i1.ytimg.com/vi/DWNls4vCVNU/movieposter.jpg?v=4e1e0a1c
Directed by Takashi Miike
Starring Koji Yakusho, Takayuki Yamada and many more
It's my favourite samurai movie. It's a little bit like seven samurai, but honestly the fight scenes are way superior so I prefer to watch this one. The last act of the movie is just a brutal fight scene and it's stunningly well made. Any action movie fan should watch this fan for the ending!

Directed by Alfred Hitchcock
Written by Hume Cronyn from the play written by Patrick Hamilton
Starring Farley Granger, John Dall, James Stewart and many more
An other Hitchcock movie! If you hadn't remarked it i'm a huge fan. Rope is fantastic about 2 dudes who wants to made the perfect murder. I've heard that the 2 main characters are gay in an other review and I think it makes sense, but Hitchcock couldn't make it obvious because it's a 1948 movie.

I like Rope, it's a bit of a Sunday afternoon comfort film. I've recently seen 13 Samurai and I liked it, but the huge battle, which is pretty much the second half of the film, goes on for much too long, IMO. It was repetitive and I became a little bored. It'd have worked better for me if it had been about a third less.
Rope is fantastic, does alot with so little. Oldboy I think is a masterpiece. Spike Lee is a fool for attempting a remake.

127 Hours, is a concrete drama, an while simple, always moving, and interesting for anyone. Oldboy is one of the best thrillers of the last decade, and te twist is great. The film also holds some amazing quotes. Rope, I saw a moth ago, and there was a lot I loved, but didn't feel the usual Hitchcock thrills.

this movie made me think a lot. The way the bad guy is a good guy at the same time. To that you add a fantastic sci fi, action movie. It's an instant classic !
The Matrix is an awesome blockbuster with some deep philosophical themes thrown in, and Cinema Paradiso is just amazing. In my top 20 all-time. +1

I have to say the last couple pages have a few movies, that at least for me, do not live up to the hype. Oldboy, Life is Beautiful, Leon, Fight Club, and the Kill Bill movies all were disappointing to me to varying degrees. Although there are things I like about all of them.
I do love Apocalypse Now, Rope, and Cool Hand Luke, and thought The Matrix was pretty cool.

The Matrix is one of the greatest movies of the 1990's given that few other contemporary movies express better than The Matrix the 1990's zeitgeist.

Starring Matthew Broderick, Alan Ruck, Mia Sara  and many more
It's just a lot of fun. Ferris Bueller is the guy we all wish to be, but we can't because humans are rational. '' Life is pretty fast you don't stop and look around once in a while you could miss it ''. This quote really affected me at the time I saw the film. It's a really generic quote, but when you think about it it makes sens.

I love Reservoir Dogs, definitely one of my favorites.
I liked Ferris as a teen when it came out but not so much when I saw it recently. Still, no denying that it's a pretty iconic film.
I like pretty much all Bond movies but not quite as much as I want to.
I haven't seen any Miyazaki films but would like to try one, just for the sake of having an open mind.

Others may disagree but I've found some of Miyazaki's films a bit hard to get into. They have a strong Fantasy element that doesn't quite suit my tastes. If you are going to watch one of his Ponyo may be a good starting point - it targets younger children and I just found it easier to enjoy. Otherwise, another Ghibli director, Isao Takahata (Only Yesterday, Grave of the Fireflies) might be better. Just IMO - if you like Fantasy stuff Miyazaki is probably best.

I don't see miyazaki as a fantasy director. I see him as a purist. He loves the relationship between man and nature. When you see that from that perspective it's not that fantastic imo.

The nature thing is definitely his favourite theme but what he puts on screen is heavily Fantasy based. A castle that walks around the Austrian hills, a pilot who gets turned into a pig, a fish that falls in love and turns into a little girl, that river spirit thing in Spirited Away, etc. The first time I watched one of his, Spirited Away, I liked it but the Fantasy stuff prevented me from really connecting with it. This isn't Miyazaki's fault - it's me. I always feel a bit detached from Fantasy movies.
I think it's better that Cricket knows what he's getting into. If not he may watch something that is just too far outside his tastes and not want to try any other similar movies. Thankfully after watching a couple of Miyazaki films I actually looked for less Fantasy based movies (because I liked the animation style) and now have two in my top 10 favourites. I tend to like the ones that could easily be live action movies - but have the benefit of the added beauty from the animation. If Cricket thinks that's more his style it may be best to leave Miyazaki until later.

The reason why I love it is because I don't even remark those fantastic elements. I'm so impressed by the beautiful mentality of his films that I'm amazed without being bothered
So many lists around just now I've fallen way behind, so just trying to catch up on some.
Anyway pretty nice list you've got going so far Pussy. Films that I either love or at least like so far would include Se7en, Jaws, Sin City, Last Crusade, Notorious, Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, Children of Men, 13 Assassins, Oldboy, Rope, 50 First Dates, Wedding Singer, Fight Club, Matrix, Goldfinger, Reservoir Dogs, Ferris Bueller
I'm a fan of Alfred Hitchcock but you've included perhaps my two least favourite films of his that I've seen so far - To Catch a Thief and The Birds.

I would recommend Princess Mononoke for people with similar tastes as you. For a Miyazaki film, it's pretty toned down on the fantastical stuff. There are talking animals, demons, and gods, but the whole vibe is still very realistic imo.
At the end of the day, he's really just using this stuff as a means of sending a message. If you have the ability to draw anything you can imagine, why not go for it?

This trilogy is the perfect trilogy. What I mean by that is that the 3 of them are kind of as good. For me there's not one that is a lot better than any other. My favourite is Begins, but not by much. Indiana Jones as a really week movie and Temple of Doom is good, but not as good as Raiders and Last Crusade. Star Wars as just 2 great movies. That's without a doubt Miyazaki's masterpiece and for them who didn't know there's a manga (japonese comic) that Miyazaki made and it's even better. Starring Jack Nicholson, Louise Fletcher, Christopher Lloyd, Danny DeVito and many more
Such a fantastic film about how humans can be treated as animals. The way the employees of the institute treats the patients are horrible, but in a sublte way. That makes it even more effective. The producers wanted to have an actress that represents evil as Nurse Ratched. Milos Forman wanted to have a more subtle nurse who actually thinks she's doing something good and that she's helping the patients. The result is Louise Fletcher giving one of the best women performance I've seen in a movie. That's a great exemple of Fletcher's performance.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJDWd91nlI4
Something else that made that movie as good as it is. Is the fact that they actually shot the movie in a mental institute with real patients. So the actors were really in that mood. Apparently they even kept their characters when they weren't shooting. So it's full of great performances and a really touching movie !

It's a really quiet, unique movie. Ryan Gosling is Drive a nameless badass car driver who can drive you anywhere in less than 5 minutes. he doesn't cary a gun, but drives faster tha anyone else. It's a little bit like a film noir. It's a really atmospheric movie and Ryan Gosling gives a stunning performance. The very, very, very quiet realationship between Gosling and Mulligan is really unique and interesting. This is probably my favourite scene from the film.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRa3zyHUCtI
An other interesting thing about the film is the evolution of the scorpion. The Ryan Gosling's character is almost like a superhero. He is a badass and is going through redemption. He begins as a criminal and he finishes as a hero. The song A Real Human Being is used perfectly in the film. If you haven't drive I highly suggest it to everyone of you.

It's the autobiographical story of Truffaut's childhood. His difficult relationship with his parents and his unique way to see the world from the perspective of a kid. What's make the movie interesting is that Truffaut know's how to capture the essence of a difficult childhood. Antoine Doinel really wants to do something great, but he still disappoints everyone. In addition to that the movie is shot in a beautiful black and white. The sequels are great as well, but not as good as this one. It's the more entertaining Hitchcock movie. I heard somewhere that It was his version of a James Bond movie. And it would be the best Bond movie without a doubt. It still has this great Hitchcock style with a lot of suspense, but with that there's almost an action movie so it's really entertaining. Dr Strangelove (1964)

Directed by Stanley Kubrick
Written by Stanley Kubrick, Terry Southern & Peter George
Starring Peter Sellers, Sterling Hayden, George C Scott and many more !
The greatest war movie of all time in my opinion ! It's not violent, just funny. It's a war satire which is the greatest thing that can be done with that stupid thing that is war. Sellers is fantastic playing 3 characters and nailing the 3 of them. Sterling hayden is hilarious specially when he talks about bodily fluids. The discussion between Sellers as the US president and the Russian president on the phone is just hilarious and we almost feel that it's done this way in reality. Kubrick as done a fantastic job in creating this table when they all speek. Fantastic movie !

The Shining (1980)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/2/25/The_Shining_poster.jpg/220px-The_Shining_poster.jpg
Directed by Stanley Kubrick
Written by Kubrick (screenplay), Stephen King (book)
It's simply one of the most iconic movies of all time. Take one of the greatest horror thriller and add to that Stanley Kubrick's beautiful visuals and Nicholson's amazing over acting it can't go wrong!. The whole here's Johnny scene is just a pleasure to watch for me. Nicholson is being charismatic while being very sadistic. We can feel the distance and how secluded of the world the hotel is. Kubrick really created one of the scariest environment ever. When Shelley Duval finds what here husband wrote on the typing machine it's just so fantastic.

Vertigo (1958)

Directed by Alfred Hitchcock
Written by Boileau Narcejad (book), Alec Coppel (screenplay)
It's Hitchcock's most personal work. It's a movie about obsession and love while being a fantastic thriller like only Hitchcock can do. Kim Novak is splendid both in acting and physically. An other great thing is that there's some unanswered questions about the movie. An exemple of that would be how Madelaine/Carlotta when out of the hotel without being seen. Hitchcock doesn't give us any answer he let us make our own conclusions.

One of the most shocking movie of all time. Not being American I didn't have to read the book in high school. So I went into the movie without knowing anything about the story at all. Maybe that it made the movie even better for me because even if the directing is good I think that the story is really what makes it that good. It's a tale of morality. How we can assume that someone is bad because he's recluse and ''weird'' when he's actually like a mockingbird just a really good person. The trial speech from Gregory Peck left me speechless. We're talking about a movie from 1962 it's really impressive.

This trilogy is the perfect trilogy ... My favourite is Begins, but not by much. Indiana Jones (Crystal Skull) is a really weak movie and Temple of Doom is good, but not as good as Raiders and Last Crusade. Star Wars as just 2 great movies. Even the man with no name trilogy as a weaker movie in A Fistfull of Dollar. For me it's the best trilogy I've seen and it's pure fun.
kind of digging up an older post here, but thought it an interesting commentary. trying to decide if i agree or disagree with you
i think i understand what you mean, i found Begins and Knight to be quite good movies. dark knight rises had good moments, i think it was below the previous two, but overall i still think of it favorably. personally i think Knight (2008) is the best of the trio. but it's not far ahead of Begins
based on my ratings below, i suppose i'd disagree that the Dark Knight Trilogy is the best trilogy. although i understand your point and respect it. and it's probably interesting only to me that none of these trilogies escape without a movie being rated under 8.0/10
1. the Man With No Name 8.67/10 avg
2. Star Wars 8.67/10 avg
3. Indiana Jones 8.50/10 avg (Crystal Skull disregarded to make it a trilogy)
4. Lord of the Rings 8.50/10 avg
5. Evil Dead 8.33/10 avg
6. Dark Knight Trilogy 8.33/10 avg
Batman Begins 8.5/10

For a Few Dollars More 10.0/10
the Good, the Bad & the Ugly 8.5/10

*boosted from the excellence of its middle part
Star Wars 9.5/10
the Empire Strikes Back 9.0/10
Return of the Jedi 7.5/10

Directed by Alfred Hitchcock

Starring Janet Leigh, Anthony Perkins, Vera Miles and many more !
As you can see I'm a huge Hitchcock fan. Psycho is my favourite Hitchcock for one reason only and it's Anthony Perkins. It's a great Hitchcock movie with some iconic scenes, but what makes this movie that good is Norman Bates. My favourite scene in the movie is the scene when Norman invites Marion to eat and he take her to this creepy room with a lot of birds and this whole conversation is tense and fantastic. I had the chance to don't know the ending before watching it the first time and I was rarely as shock while watching a film. Specially taking in consideration the fact that it's a movie from 1960.

Starring Charles Bronson, Jason Robards, Henry Fonda, Claudia Cardinale and many more
Sergio Leone is simply a genius. Every time I watch this film I'm really impressed by the universe and the imagerie that it has. Charles Bronson plays one of the biggest badass in movie history (harmonica) and Henry Fonda weirdly plays a immoral villain. Which was really shocking to the American audience because Fonda was like the American hero. The score by Enio Morricone is beautiful and compliment the film very well. Claudia Cardinale is hot.

The story simply touched me. A man who is tired of society and goes for what is really important which is nature. I rarely felt the way I did while watching this film for the first time. People often are depressed by society and what this movie tells us is that society is not everything and that the simple things in life like eating an apple can be one of the most beautiful thing if you want to see it this way (the English in that last sentence is horrible, but I don't know how to explain it well) This movie just really goes back to the essential and the only reason why it's not in my top 5 is the rewatchibility factor. It's one of the hardest movie to watch because of the ending. This scene is simply beautiful

Dr King Schultz is one of the biggest badass I've ever seen, Django is a great western hero and Calvin Candy is one of the best western villain ever so what can't you love about Django Unchained? In addition to that the score and the soundtrack are fantastic. His name was king and Django are 2 of my favourite movie songs and it fits perfectly to the character and it adds to the badass aspect of it.

Directed by Sam Mendez
Written by Allan Ball
Starring Kevin Spacey, Annette Benning, Mena Suvari, Chris Cooper and many more !
Probably the movie that made me think the most. The story is fantastic and deals with a lot of issues. It deals with a midlife crisis (Kevin Spacey and Annette Benning), but the message that made it my number 8 is how the world is beautiful. The sequence where Wes Bentley shot a plastic bag and is amazed by it's beauty is genius. It shows us that beauty is subjective and that the way someone can have a more open mind for life can make his life full of beauty. The last scene when Kevin Spacey says '' And then it flows through me like rain. And I can feel anything but gratitude for every moment of my stupid little life. You have no idea what I'm talking about do you? But don't worry you will someday. ''

There might be some spoilers
I'm usually not a fan of romantic movies, but this one if one hell of an exception. First, the character of Ben is really interesting in the fact that he searches himself. He doesn't know who he really is both emotionally and professionally. The scene at the beginning when everyone is happy for him and you can see that he doesn't really care for this social gathering and that he is a young men with a lot of questions that aren'tanswered. In addition to that Anne Bancroft is the original milf and his stunningly attractive. The ending in the bus with them looking at each other is fantastic as well. You can see on their faces that they realize the impact of the decision they just made. Simon & Garfunkel's soundtrack is my favourite ever. All the musical scene are fantastic. A must see !

It's the best Kubrick's film in my opinion. It's a beautiful film to look at, the visuals impress me every time I watch it. I actually feel sympathy for Alex and it's not normal. I mean when I watched Natural Born Killer I was hating the main characters and I wanted them to be arrested, but in this case even if Alex is a disgusting man who raped and kills women I can't help, but have pity for him. It also asks us a great question. Should we let human nature be by itself even if it's horrible or should we change it and create a robot. I don't have the answer to that question, but I constantly have this question in mind when I see evil.

Dead Poets Society is an OK film, but it's a little too overly dramatic and sentimental for my taste and I think it lacks subtlety in its message. It's too easy to make an argument against something if you portray it in a very negative, almost unrealistic way. The last scene is a classic, though. "Oh captain, my captain!"
A Clockwork Orange is one of my personal favorites (probably top 20 material). Next to its amazing style and visuals, it contains one of the most haunting stories of all time. Repression and freedom are held against each other in this dark, yet still oddly comic tale of a downright evil person who gets turned into an unfree creature because of a governmental experiment against crime. Brilliant film.
EDIT - 08/12/2014:
I was thinking about this post of mine just now (Robin Williams just died). I always thought the suicide bit was over the top and it made me disconnect with the movie, because I didn't think it was realistic or believable.
Somehow, I just started thinking that I, myself, am just unable to understand the inner grief of someone who commits suicide. It's not the movie that's unrealistic. It's me who doesn't want to believe that such grief exists.
Just wanted to add this to the post...
Nobody's mentioning the ACO musical score? My best friend says it's the greatest ever.

I'm not a huge fan of the Beethoven music, but the music played during the opening scene is terrific. One of the most awesome openings that I've seen in all of cinema.

I agree that the score is fantastic, but I just think that the visuals are more remarkable.

The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

Directed by Frank Darabont

Starring Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman & many more !
I know it's cool to dislike this movie, but I really believe it's one of the greatest movie ever made. There's so many great scenes and great characters. My favorite is Brooks. An old man who enters in prison before the industrial revolution so he isn't used to seeing cars everywhere, etc. He actually grew up, became a man and lived his live in prison. So we realize that prison is the place he should be and that revelation really shocked me. To see him returning in the world and being surpassed by the events surrounding him is one of the best movie moment ever. Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins are both giving an outstanding performance as Red and Andy. The ending is cliche, but is an emotional burst nonetheless
"before the industrial revolution..." :rotfl: But I get what you mean. :)

Donnie Darko (2001)

Written & Directed by Richard Kelly
Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Patrick Swayze, Katharine Ross and many more
This film is one of the greatest because of it's rewatchibility value. You can watch this film 5 times and every time you'll get something else out of it. The character of Donnie himself is so interesting. An alienated kid who discovers that he needs to die if he wants the world to continue the way it is. When he meets Gretchen for the first time she told him that his name was like a super hero's name. he answered he might be one. In the end we see that he is one. Mad World at the end is probably my favourite movie scene ever I cry every time and I'm not ashamed to say it haha.

Donnie Darko is one movie(along with Magnolia, Drive, and Blade Runner) that I need to see again, because I feel like I may have missed something the first time.

The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly (1966)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/4/45/Good_the_bad_and_the_ugly_poster.jpg/220px-Good_the_bad_and_the_ugly_poster.jpg
Directed by Sergio Leone
Written by a couple of unknown Italian guys and Sergio Leone
Starring Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, Eli Wallach and some obscure Italian actors
Well I don't think I have to sell this movie to any of you. The imagerie, the universe, the badass, the music, the beautiful cinematography. It's just a pure joy to watch for 2 hours. Ecstasy of Gold with Tuco running in the cemetery is just magical and a fantastic image. A man is in a graveyard, a place where there are the ashes of dead people and he doesn't care about them all he wants is money. The way he runs with a smile on his face is , in my opinion, a great satire on greed and ho money is to important. (maybe I'm overthinking, but everytime I watch it I really do think about that)

Inglourious Basterds (2009)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/c/c3/Inglourious_Basterds_poster.jpg/215px-Inglourious_Basterds_poster.jpg
Written & Directed by Quentin Tarantino
Starring Christoph Waltz, Brad Pitt, Diane Kruger, Melanie Laurent, Eli Roth, Daniel Bruhl, Michael Fassbender and many more
There are two mindsets that I can have while watching a film. The first one is: I want to enjoy myself and have a good time while watching a film. the second one is: I want to be touched, to learn something, to be impressed by a piece of art. The first is the kind of movies that are enjoyable, the second one is the kind of movie that we watch only once or twice, but are really impressed and moved by it. Like Schindler's list, Platoon or Ordinary People. Inglourious Basterds is one of the few movies that are doing both. Non only is it one of the most entertaining movie of all time, but it's only a really impressive social study of war. As i said before in my commentary about Dr Strangelove, the best way to deal with war is by laughing of it and the character of Aldo Raine is a huge joke. The scene where he fails speaking italian is hilarious and makes us realize how dumb is their plan.We also see 2 different ways that human can do evil. The first one is by Hans Landa. He just decides to be a bad person. He doesn't even have any kind of fidelity for the nazis because he just think of his personal benefits. He just is a man bad society doesn't have anything to do about it. The second one is Frederick Zoller. he isn't a bad person, he just is in an horribly bad regime. He lived in a society where what the Nazis do was normal. He doesn't think of himself as evil, but he is because of the society in which he live in and the Nazi regime.
