I like that Warren Zevon song, but I did not like his voice. Too whiny. I did not wanna keep him in my heart.

I love Warren Zevon. Still can't believe he's been gone for 10 years now.
And that particular song is one of a rare few that can bring a tear to my eye. The line "Sometimes when you're doing simple things around the house, maybe you'll think of me and smile" just kills me every time.

Have you lost somebody important to you, Miss Vicky?
No friends or family members yet (thankfully), but - lame though it might sound - there have been some special pets in my life that have passed away where something simple will make me think of them. So I can relate on that level.
But a lot of why it affects me is just in how it relates to Zevon himself. I've been a big fan of his work for a long time. This was his goodbye song and The Wind was his goodbye album. That's why you see people like Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, and Jackson Brown in the video. They were friends who came to say goodbye and also performed on the album. Zevon was diagnosed with mesothelioma, given 6 months to live, and decided he'd spend what time he had left recording one last album. He lived about a year after the diagnosis - just long enough to see the last album get released. He also lived just long enough to see his twin grandsons come into the world (the pregnant woman in the video is his daughter). He was only 56.

Apparently "we're" the musically narrow minded ones ;)
For the record, like most genres, there's plenty of good rap/hip-hop and plenty of bad rap/hip-hop. Everyone raves about Eminem these days, but Public Enemy are the guys.

Wow, I never thought I'll be defending rap, but Kno's Death is Silent is fuggin' dope, man!
Listened to it, hated it. Rap is the sound of a fat black man talking with a simple electronic rhythm under. There are some minor variations though.
If it is music or not is something that depends on the person's opinion but it certainly is not music in the traditional sense of a melody created by a sequence of notes.
Noise is also a genre of music so, dear sir, you failed!
Of course, anything is music. The sound of my typing in the keyboard right now is music.
Not to mention the 'music has instruments' argument, which is totally preposterous. Never heard of electronic music?
What's your definition of music? If standard electronic rhythms with the voice of a man talking over it can said to be music them music definition is:
"Music is any sound that some people like to listen to it."
Because apparently anything can be music. Even the sound of a bus engine can be said to be music if there are people that like to listen to it.
Also, my instrument argument was rather sarcastic.

Apparently "we're" the musically narrow minded ones ;)
Who said that? I never claimed that everybody else that was participating in the song tournament is musically narrow minded.
For the record, like most genres, there's plenty of good rap/hip-hop and plenty of bad rap/hip-hop. Everyone raves about Eminem these days, but Public Enemy are the guys.
I have extremely narrow music tastes. Among popular genres I only love heavy metal (about 95% of all popular music I have listened over the past 10 years has been heavy metal) but I can like a few bands from other genres (such as Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Deep Purple, Scorpions, Ramones). I cannot listen to any rap/hip hop, however, they all sound like pure garbage to me. I just am not attracted to the sound of a man talking fast with a ghetto accent and a simple electronic rhythm underneath.
Also I must say that my film tastes are much broader than my music tastes.
Miss Vicky

Guaporense
08-20-13, 11:23 AM
You can be extremely serious about music and still have extremely narrow music tastes. I actually think that both are correlated: a person that likes everything doesn't love anything. You would expect a person that loves music to dislike many genres. A person that studies classical music, for instance, probably doesn't like most popular music.
Tarkovsky was extremely serious about film (one of the most serious lovers of film ever) and he had extremely narrow film tastes, he considered 95% of all films to be garbage (the only American director he liked was Chaplin!) but he loved film.

In the previous tournament you were upset because heavy metal didn't fare that well, and you claimed we just didn't understand it. Then you generalize the entire hip-hop genre with this:
a man talking fast with a ghetto accent and a simple electronic rhythm underneath.
This kind of reeks of hypocrisy. I understand not liking it, but at least give it the credit it's due. Not every rapper "talks fast," not every beat is as simple as you claim it. Not every beat is even "electronic."

Apparently "we're" the musically narrow minded ones ;)
For the record, like most genres, there's plenty of good rap/hip-hop and plenty of bad rap/hip-hop. Everyone raves about Eminem these days, but Public Enemy are the guys.
Yeah they are. I should nominate them if there is another tournament.
I actually think that both are correlated: a person that likes everything doesn't love anything. You would expect a person that loves music to dislike many genres. A person that studies classical music, for instance, probably doesn't like most popular music..
Oh blerg. Many of the best musical artists are the ones who are influenced by and get excited about many different genres of music. Ray Charles is a big example of this.
Music flows, evolves and intertwines so that you can pick most genres of music and see how it influenced and was influenced by other genres. Rockabilly holds hands with country, bluegrass, punk, surf and other styles of music. Blues has influenced almost everything, country is a virtual melting pot of many genres and so on and so on. The more knowledgable I have become about music the more I have come to appreciate the many different genres of music and I'm fairly certain that's the norm and not the exception.

Those who actually make the music appear to be the least snobbish of all music fans. Cool. I'll have to check it out.
Have you listened to The Traveling Wilburys at all? They were a supergroup composed of George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Jeff Lynne (of Electric Light Orchestra). Orbison only did one album with them (he passed away shortly afterwards) but it's one of my all time favorite records.
Nope, but I'll definitely take a look. I love Orbison, Bob Dylan and ELO, and love some Beatles songs too. Not listened to any Petty really but I know you love him, so yeah I'll definitely check it out :D

Apparently the vocalist for "Pump Up The Lady" is a chick named Ya Kid K -- the lady? on the right.
The black woman dancing in the video is just a lip synching model and not the singer.
I always pictured the singer as a young Hispanic guy. I guess that's what I thought Ya Kid K was (I remember Technotronic when they first came out because I had a VHS tape featuring their music videos).

Is it just these performances specifically or do you hate live performances in general? I think live performances are the true test of an artist's skill.
That said, three of my upcoming nominations are live performances, but they are ones that are either wholly different than the studio recordings ("Go Insane" which was a Buckingham solo tune and the original was very, very 80s) or are live covers ("While My Guitar Gentlys Weeps" and "Where Did You Sleep Last Night").

In general, I don't care for live performances. Going to a concert is alright if you wanna see the performers and just have a good time, but I never expect the music to be great. IT CAN BE, but personally, I would rather hear a song that's been mixed and taken care of professionally in a studio. The original mix.
The live performance of the Garbage song was alright. I had to listen to the real studio version song and it was close to the performance. I couldn't really find a studio version of the Stevie/Ray Charles duet. That one seemed rather ridiculous to me -- it seemed more about seeing these two mega stars together than the music. I almost voted for it, though, because I like Stevie's voice, but Garbage eventually won me over. I had difficulty choosing between those two. I was almost not gonna vote at all.

Personally, I advise against using live performances in this game. I hated that live performance Kermit did for "Rainbow Connection." I voted for it anyway because I love the original song.
I'm not sappy. You can't win me over with a live performance unless you're singing it only for me. Otherwise, I'm cold and clinical and needs the skills and professionalism of a studio mix at hand. They sound much better. That's hard work getting that song to sound really good.

I highly doubt everyone here is voting objectively. Killer Mike songs are being chosen because there's something cool about Killer Mike to people. Michael Jackson's terrific "Wanna Be Startin' Something" song lost to "Pump Up The Jam" -- something that kinda irritates me, even though I nominated both songs and enjoy them, but I feel Jackson's song is much superior and I suspect he may have lost because of the negativity surrounding him.
I'm guilty of this, too, though. I dissed the Die Antwoord (?) song because I hate the female singer in that group.

1. The Who
4. Pink Floyd
5. Roy Orbison
I'll be back to vote for the rest later, or just to be a tie-breaker.
Miss Vicky
08-23-13, 10:03 PM
I voted for Technotronic because I genuinely like "Pump Up the Jam" more than that particular Michael Jackson song. Had it been up against something like "Smooth Criminal," "Leave Me Alone," "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," "The Way You Make Me Feel," "Billie Jean," "Thriller," "Man in the Mirror," "Another Part of Me," "Will You Be There" (yes, the Free Willy song) or any number of other Jackson tunes, it wouldn't have gotten my vote.
I've voted against Killer Mike because I genuinely don't like the nominated tracks. Actually I don't care for rap in general, but occasionally I will hear a rap song I like. "Keep Me In Your Heart" and "Stand By Me" are far superior to the nominated Killer Mike songs, IMO. "Rainbow Connection" I actually don't really care for, but neither do I care for "Ever Fallen In Love." I mostly picked it because I find the thought of a muppet moving on to the next round amusing.

ETA: Oh look, Roy Orbison's winning his match now. Gee, there's a surprise.

Had you voted for Zevon, it would've been a tie and we would've needed another vote. But you voted for the song you liked more, which is what you're supposed to do.

or, again, The Wilburys

I vote for whichever song I like more.
In terms of the Jacko/Technotronic vote, I voted for Pump Up The Jam, because:
1. I quite like Pump Up The Jam.
2. It wasn't my favourite Michael Jackson song. If it had been a different one, then maybe the vote might have swung towards Jacko.
Putting it out there too, that my favourite Travelling Wilbury is Jeff Lynne.

I would hope that no one is voting objectively. It's music, for crying out loud.
I've never heard of Killer Mike, so it's not a cool thing, but I hate Stand By Me and I've hated it since my teens. TBH, there aren't many songs that'd lose against Stand By Me.
Wanna Be Startin' Something is a great song and, by default, I almost voted for it. But then I thought, which would I rather listen to and sing along with atm? And the answer was Pump Up The Jam.
Huh. I always figured him to be the least popular.

That's very similar to what got me into Roy Orbison. Full Moon Fever was the first album I owned by any artist. Crap. I didn't get to vote on the last set. It wouldn't have mattered that much but it would have tied Livin For The City with Only Happy When It Rains so I guess it might have mattered a bit.

ELO basically got me into Tom Petty, and then The Travelling Wilburys yeah. The similar sound never put me off like it does in most artists/bands. Probably because the quality of all Lynne's/Petty's/etc output is so consistently high. I've been on a George Harrison thing recently.

Zero of my nominations in this bracket.
Edit: Dam, I didn't vote in time! I was listening to all the songs and then, bamm!, new set!
All right: let's vote for this one:
5. Kreator - Coma of Souls 5 + (Need to say more? One of the greatest songs ever composed, though I don't think extreme heavy metal is accessible to newcomers so I shouldn't have nominated it) vs Men Without Hats - Safety Dance 3_5
7. Slayer - Show No Mercy 5 vs Kill Me Baby Ending Song 4 (I nominated it but it is certainly not a masterpiece as Show No Mercy is!)
After listening to the 16 other songs multiple times I don't have time to listen to the rest. '_'

3. Susanna Hoffs - Run to Me

4. Temple of the Dog - Hunger Strike
5. Men Without Hats - Safety Dance
I feel guilty about voting for this, but there was no choice.
6. Bob Dylan - Things Have Changed
