Thoughts on the Stephen King novel turned show?
I really want to like it, but I'm not officially sold on it yet. A show like this feels like it should be a mini series and that's it, so let's see what they end up doing with it.
I can say this right off the bat, I'm not a fan of the mayor's son storyline. Feels completely forced.
I haven't read the book, so I don't know what the dome is as of yet. But from what I hear they have changed the ending.

I agree that this feels like something should just be a mini-series and not try and make a show out of it, I can't see how they would have that much material to work with without taking the story way away from the book.
I did like the pilot but who knows how it will be from here on. The cow part was pretty awesome, reminded me of that scene from The Cell. ;)

I'm a big fan of the book. One of King's best in recent years. Haven't seen the series pilot yet, but I've heard (surprisingly) good things about it. And as the for Mayor's son storyline, it's meant to be like that for reasons I won't spoil.

I was going to watch it, but I thought better of it ;) I really shouldn't comment, as I haven't watched a single episode.

Wasn't blown away by anything in the pilot. Will give it a few more eps.
Midway thru second episode I stopped watching, thinking I should read the book first, many seemed to like it, I don't want the pilot series indenting my mind's eye, the fact that it isn't a proper mini series is also questionable.

Watched the pilot on Amazon. Do not want.
Watched the pilot and subsequent episode...the jury is still out. I'll give it another two episodes to catch my fancy.
I'd ditch it, but TV's sparse at the moment, so I'll probably watch it for now.
Boy, this show has gotten so bad so quick. Very good first episode, bad second one, terrible third.
And I gotta say: I like King as a writer, but the guy's become just insanely predictable in certain ways. Always setting stories in small New England towns is just a style thing; no issues there. But even the beats are following patterns. As soon as I saw a lesbian couple I thought "okay, won't be long before some hick-looking guy says something moderately intolerant or suggestive about that." When Big Jim started showing a little aggression early on, I immediately thought "okay, he'll definitely end up being a full-blown psychopath before long." And I'll bet a billion dollars that bully from the house party carries a grudge around for awhile and pops up again.
And the whole Junior thing is just bungled beyond belief.
I'd be so, so down with this show if there were anything else on. As it is, I might be done with it anyway, since I can always go back and finally watch Friday Night Lights.

You liked the pilot a lot more than I did. They crammed in too much too fast... Nothing was believably developed. It felt like watching a bad soap opera where everything is a predictable set-up for a predictable conflict. The whole thing felt very rushed and formulaic.
Maybe I was bowled over by the awesome images of cows being cut in half and trucks slamming into thin air.

I watched hoping for good execution of the initial... um, "doming" but even that was a big meh for me. I'm calling this one DOA.
More like DOA-M, am I right?

You want a pundown? Punderdome? Two mofos enter, one mofo leaves? There can be only pun?
As long as it's not too serious; it should be all in good pun.

I watched the first episode (I've not read the book), and thought it was pretty interesting, but also a lot like Revolution, which didn't go anywhere.

I liked it. It's not much like the book, so there's at least a few surprises per episode. I'll keep watching, cause I am interested so far. I like the change in some characters, puzzled by others. Big Jim seems to be the best change, he was a seriously evil to the point of silliness character in the novel, but in the show he's more believable.
I bailed on this after the third episode, I think. I'm assuming it hasn't done anything to make me wanna come back, yeah? Sounds like it's enough of a hit that they want to extend the conceit even further.

I've avoided the show like the plague. I truly despised the book. It was less an involving fiction than a treatise by King on his political views. About 80% of the book was him hitting the reader over the head about what he believes (through his characters). If anyone is even a casual King fan, they'll know what moves him politically and it sure was a sludge to read through at over 1000 pages. And the ending, like many of his long books, is disappointing. So, I wasn't looking forward to the series. And from all the negative posts here, I don't feel bad for missing it.
But I am curious...is the series overtly political? Or is more about the dome and the town characters?
Season 2 premieres tonight! Yeah I watch it, no I havent read it, but after reading so many King novels I can see his similarities. My mom likes it so I watch it with her. Sad to read in here that its gonna end badly like most of his books, but Im not surprised.

I gave up on the show, it was nothing like the book. I didn't like how it seems like a sanitized version of the all out chaos of the novel.

Monkeypunch, I totally agree. The fun of the novel was just how disorganizedly BAD everything got. But still, why a series here and not just a one-season miniseries?
I enjoyed the book all right, but I think what hooked me in (aside from being a huge King fan) was the initial concept. He does a good job of going through everything that would happen in a situation like this, but in the show, it all seems too ... tidy or something.
And everyone comes off like a stereotyped cartoon. I know King often dances on the edges of this very problem in many of his large books with "ensemble casts" of characters, but this one felt especially so even in the book. I knew turning it into a series would make that problem even worse. Most good King books involve being in a character's head -- WAY in their head -- and that just never translates well to the screen. This is especially true of this series.
Not even going to bother with the new season. I have Netflix and Amazon Prime to keep me busy and a ton of new books to read, including a few by King. :D
I remain stunned by how quickly this show fell off after an excellent pilot episode.
It's not unusual, of course, for a pilot to be really good and for the show to fall off after. But I think I gave up after the 4th episode. It got so bad so fast.

I watched all of season 1 only because I want answers about where the dome came from and how they get out, but I was kind of hoping that CBS would cancel the show so that I wouldn't get stuck watching season 2.
Unfortunately, season 2 starts tonight, and I'll probably end up watching that too, just to find out some answers.
But I'm still hoping that it gets cancelled soon.
lol! I cant argue on the quality. It was great when it was just the Dome and the townfolk, but when they started introducing all the mumbo-jumbo it got strongly stupid fast. As the season wore on it got worse. If they just kept it as a Dome with no "What does the Dome want us to do?" b.s. , this could have been a top tier show.
Maybe they should make a tv series from The Mist. Now that would rock!
