I love Justified. Timothy Olyphant plays Raylan Givens a U.S. Marshall stationed out of Louisville, KY but frequently travels to his birthplace in Harlan County. Olyphant has brought in so many Deadwood alumni onto the series, its as hardcore as it needs to be, has a great sense of humor, a hero you arent ashamed to like, and a villain thats a hillbilly Al Capone who also happens to be Raylans best friend, Boyd Crowder played by Walter Goggins. I really like Nick Searcy who plays Raylans boss Art Mullen. For me, Searcy steals every scene hes in.
I think it compares to the storylines, character development, and dialogue to hang with the big 3 - The Walking Dead, Game Of Thrones, and Breaking Bad. Anyone else have a show they like as good as them? I would be sooo all ears to hear of it. :)

Yeah, I haven 't tried that one yet. I might as well since I can't find anything else I like. I may not have given Breaking Bad a fair chance, but I could never get into it. I watch The Walking Dead mainly because I can't find anything better and it keeps almost getting good. It's tricky that way. :)
I think The Wire is better than either TWD or BB, but I think I might actually like GoT better, which is saying a lot, because The Wire is phenomenal.
Ive heard that before about The Wire. Im gonna check that one out from the beginning cause Ive only seen one episode, and I didnt know who was who or what the hell was going on

Yeah, you have to watch it from the beginning. Watch the entire first season before you make up your mind. I couldn't understand all the fuss was about at first, but by the last episode of the first season I was hooked. Now I don't understand what I didn't like about it.
By the way, I just finished the first episode of Justified. I'll let you know after a few more episodes, but I think I might finally have found a show I like. Raylan's character was set up nicely and it seems like it might actually have a good mix of story and character.

These are three shows I've always been interested in due to hearing great things:
The Sopranos
Deadwood

Yeah, I've now watched a few episodes of Justified and I'm going to stick with it. I really like the characters and I like the humor. What I'm most happy with so far is the pacing. It has a slow and easy feel to it that makes for a nice contrast to a lot of what I've been watching.

Lots have been mentioned already, but I'd say Luther, Treme, Six Feet Under, I, Claudius, Rome, and Luck are on par with Game of Thrones.
Drama series that are better would be Generation Kill, Deadwood and The Sopranos.
In a league of its own is The Wire.
The Wire is incredibly. One of the greatest TV drams ever. The Sopranos is one of the all-time greats as well.
If your asking for shows on now, I'd recommend House of Cards,The Killing,Hannibal,American Horror Story and Mad Men. All incredible dark TV dramas.

I'm in the second season of The Sopranos and I'm getting bored with it if I'm to be honest. It's gotten very redundant. Is it going to break out of that or is this the way it goes from now on? I really liked the first season, but I feel like it's spinning its wheels now.

It picks up strong in season 3 & 4. The last season 5 was broke up into two parts, and it fell off some.

If you like zombies/horror types(The Walking Dead) I really really recommend the French series Les Revenants/The Returned.
But be warned, it's not zombies in the sense of The Walking Dead - there is hardly any 'zombie gore' and most of the gore actually comes from a serial killer instead.
It's a mellow series and takes its time(eight episodes in the series) with lots of characters to follow, more of a supernatural/'ghost' story with people coming back from the dead than the 'zombie series' it was advertised as.
I recommend it though, to me it's one of the best series out in a long time and now one of my all time favourites.

It's ok, I'm still not really 'there' with it and I don't get excited about the next episodes, but that's probably just me atm. Everyone else who sees it seems to really enjoy it. I would say that the word zombie shouldn't be anywhere near this, though. It's much more in the mould of a supernatural/ghost story.
I wouldnt say this is as good as Thrones, B Bad, or Dead, but Ive really enjoyed the first season of this Showtime series, and the finales next sunday. I'd say its at least as good as Hell On Wheels.

I've never seen the Walking Dead, but Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad are awesome. There are not a lot aof shows I've seen that are better.
If sitcoms counts I'd say Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, Community, The IT Crowd and Arrested Developpment
Other than that Prison Break is better than these 2 imo, Lie to me was fantastic, but it got cancel and I'm watching Hell on Wheels right now and I prefer it to Breaking Bad and GOT.

The Simpsons and Arrested Development are the only shows I prefer to Breaking Bad, although The Office (US) and 24 both give it a run for its money. I really, really like The Walking Dead, but it's too flawed for me to put it in the very top tier of shows, unless it really impresses with season 4.

Mad Men is an excellent TV show. Almost flawless in how subtle and well written it is.

As much as I love Breaking Bad and GOT, Mad Men is the best thing on television. My third fave show ever behind The Sopranos and The Shield.
Well I didnt think the day would come. Theres a show thats EASILY as good as the big three.
HBO's True Detective with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. This is without doubt the most gripping and terrifying show on television. Theres only 8 episodes total though, and the 5th one just aired sunday.
This is the story of two men that worked as homicide detectives in who the hell knows where, Louisiana 17 years ago. There was an exceptionally grissly murder case they supposedly solved. Now the killings are occurring again, and theyre brought in seperately and questioned on the case and surrounding events. Thats such a bare bones description, enjoy :)

Dexter 1-4 is amazing, but the last 4 are horrible imo. I'd also say that i hated AHS Coven.

I watched the first 6 episodes of season 1 and wondered what all the fuss was about. Guys that used to drink at work and screw around whoopedidoo! Does anything really evolve from first half of season 1 or do I pretty much know the highs and lows of watching the show?
The Walking Dead is terrible, and doesn't belong in a list with any good shows, let alone great. Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones are both amazing, though.
Meanwhile - you MUST watch Orphan Black, which is my favorite show on TV right now.

I'd like to know that too, as I felt the same way you did. Sometimes it takes multiple tries before a show clicks with me, but there was nothing about Mad Men that makes me want to give it another chance.

If your an action junkie maybe t is not for you. If you love character driven shows you have to continue on. Don is one of the great characters ever. The show is also consistently more funny than most sitcoms. Very similar to The Sopranos in pacing and structure.

Funny how different series have such varying appeal to people!
It took a couple of episodes to get me liking Mad Men then I watched all the series back to back I was so hooked. It's the era that appeals to me and the social comparisons with how we are now - the attitude to women and womens ambition, racial prejudice, class snobbery etc. I love the way that as the series progresses, the news and advancements in technology are built into the scripts and often the adverts they're working on too. Also the characters, whether you love them or hate them they're very well rounded
All that and besides, but the clothes! wow I love the costumes! I'm always one to love looking at any period dramas costumes. Those backstage people in the costume dept do such great jobs in series :)

Yeah, I thought I'd really like it because it is set in the 60s and that has always been my favorite time in history to read about, but something about Mad Men just didn't grab my attention except for maybe Peggy's character.
I'm a huge fan of Ripper Street. Only the first season is on Netflix currently and the third season was just cancelled, but wow is this a fun, intense show. Featuring a slew of Game of Thrones alum.

I've been bingewatching Walking Dead. I feel like a crack addict-- it is so ******* good, and I can't stop, and I feel so bad afterwards but it doesn't matter and I've got to see the next one no matter what and my kids are eating chili out of old cans off the floor but I don't care...

I gotta echo just about every series that's come out of HBO, especially Deadwood (one of my top five all-time series), Six Feet Under (probably also on my top five), True Detective (omigosh, perfection!), and even a few that were, sadly, either cancelled or cut short for various reasons: Carnivale, Rome... Boardwalk Empire is gorgeous to watch (we have a restored Victorian home, so I love seeing the period homes and furniture), but it hasn't held me quite like some other HBO series have. I think I've never quite bought Steve Buscemi in the lead on this one (though the other casting has been spot-on).
And you already have Game of Thrones on your title, so...
No one's mentioned the strangely up-and-down Showtime show, Shameless (the American version with William H. Macy). Its portrayal of a poverty-stricken family (due to Dad's alcoholism and an absent mom) is both hilarious and overwhelmingly sad -- probably because it's so gritty and honest and genuine. The details on this show are what grab me (having been poor like that in my twenties): everything from the way they "decorate" the set of the main house to the way the kids all manage to pull their own weight (or drag others down).
It's hitting a critical mass in the current season -- unsure where they are going to go to keep some of the main characters on the show much longer. But so far it's been well worth watching.
My husband likes Cinemax's Banshee, but I'm not stuck on it. I'll watch it with him and follow along, but it's been far-fetched from the beginning, and the MC has had several opportunities to get himself out of this perpetual bind he's in and hasn't taken them, and it's always seemed difficult to believe.
I'd echo cheers for Justified (amazingly great humor that doesn't flag after a few seasons) -- the banter between Art and Raylan is worth watching, as is the performance by Walter Goggins.
BTW, I really hate that, of the handful of current shows I watch faithfully (which is about four or five), four of them are all on at 9:00 on Sunday nights. Even with a dual-tuner DVR, I end up having to watch at least two on On Demand later... and worry about spoilers until I can get around to them. :D

The phrase "this feels like it should be on cable" gets overused, when people usually just mean it as a way to say "this is on network TV, but it's good." But Bryan Fuller's latest creation, Hannibal, really does feel like it shouldn't be on a network channel, let alone one that's as clueless and disastrous as NBC. Nevertheless, it exists and the world is better for it. Fuller has always been obsessed with the macabre, and particularly death, but he usually filters it through a very precious, quirky lens. There's nothing precious or quirky about Hannibal, which boldly puts its gore right in front of you. But in an ever-increasing landscape of lurid violence, it seems to be the only show that truly has any idea what its violence means. Although the imagery will make you queasy, it's not taken lightly, and the whole point of the first season was the psychological toll that's taken out of these people who are beleaguered by death. As an audience, we feel just as helpless to Hannibal's manipulation as Will is, but what makes it more frightening is that we're aware of what's going on. - Antonio Whitehead
Regarding the best tv series of 2013, this series has been listed in the top 20 of every list Ive found. Please give it a watch as its truly the scariest thing on television (sorry American Horror Story, not on your best day). I could goosh on and on but have done so quite excessively in the Hannibal thread already.

Having just finished the first season of Orange is the New Black in two days, I have to say I think it's up there. It's quietly revolutionary in the depth and breadth of its mosaic of characters and quickly shakes off a somewhat rocky first hour or so to build to a terrific finale. And it's often hilarious and deeply moving to boot. Can't wait for season 2 now.

You can't even imagine. I've never seen a television series that explores its themes with such depth and class as Mad Men does. I personally think season 4 is the best and most accomplished season.
Mad Men is the only contemporary show that's considered one of the top 10, if not top 5 best written TV shows of all time for good reason!
Mad Men is elite-tier TV. Its ripe with gorgeous period-detail, fantastic acting, rich dialogue, and immaculate writing. Plus it has an insane amount of depth, in the vein of The Wire or The Sopranos. Its one of those rare shows that is able to reach the quality of good cinema. I definitely see how many people might find it boring, because it is not nearly as accessible as say Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones.
I Love Mad Men. One of the 5 greatest TV shows ever.

Would the subject matter be too disturbing for an elderly woman to watch? Didnt know if they handled it tastefully or its "right in your face" like most shows now. Is it harder than Under The Dome or House Of Cards? If its as dark as HOC then I know she wont want to watch it.
It depends on the temperament of the elderly woman, but in a vacuum, not knowing anything about the woman in question, I'd say it's probably not a great fit.
And just in terms of overall quality, I was a bit less enamored with it than most of the critics. Pretty good, but I'm on the fence about whether or not I'll watch a second season.

Being one of the highest acclaimed BBC shows I would of figure someone would of mentioned it by now, but sadly everyone overlooks Sherlock and goes straight to a generic British choice like Doctor Who(Which I find very mediocre at best the last few seasons).
Halt and Catch Fire is a pretty cool show.

Best TV series I've ever watched is Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Smiley's people. Both on you tube, if a slow burn Spy drama is your kind of thing.
You could try True Blood (even if the last season is sort of dissapointing) or The Tudors (no Sci-Fi)
True blood wasn't bad if you stopped after the second season.
It took a long damn time for me to find something as good as Game of Thrones and the first four seasons of Justified, but I definitely found one. The only minus is it's already off the air, it used to be on Showtime.
PENNY DREADFUL is freakinfantabulous! Puts all horror series ever made to shame, and that includes the Camelot seasons of Walking Dead even.

True Detective(Season 1)
The Wire
Excluding the extremely obvious ones, Lost, Battlestar Galactica Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Sopranos, etc..those are the top 20 shows you should check out.
Funny thought just came to me cuz I've seen a lot of these, but I think that if I had to pick the number one series out of all the ones you listed there, I surprised myself, honestly I'd have to say it would be Friday Night Lights. It truly was strong start to finish if I had to make any criticism is that they had too much shaky-cam in the first season.
Made a correction in Penny Dreadful post, it used to be on Showtime. I don't know if you can find it on Netflix now or not, I think maybe.
Thank you to both Gandalf and Siddon. Of all mentioned there are 7 I haven't watched, and now will.
Mr. Mercedes (I've never heard of this one before).

Not surprised this was on the AT&T Network, but it is definitely worth seeking out. I liked this more than Castle Rock, it's a Stephen King adaptation about a cat and mouse game between a retired detective and a psychotic hacker. It's sort of a mix of Luther and Breaking Bad

I would skip Doctor Who, Westwing, Broadchurch.
It's not that they are necessarily bad but they aren't anywhere near the level of some of the stuff on your list.

Doctor Who initially ran for twenty-two seasons uninterrupted, with many changes in front of and behind the camera. Variations in quality were inevitable really.
I just finished binge-watching all 6 seasons of Wentworth and it was a lot of fun. I've now decided to start venturing into Australian and British Productions. I'm watching Peaky Blinders and Jack Irish consecutively. After that I'm gonna watch The Crown.

I finished the first two seasons of Mr. Mercedes and I have to say it's good. The first season was better but I'm very curious what the third season going to be like. Stephen King has a bad track record when it comes to the endings to his stories

Mindhunter really got me. I didn't see it happening, but there was a lot of nostalgic cigarette smoking involved.
Dark is the show that you need to drop everything else and watch. Literally nothing else like it and it's fascinating. I've stopped watching tv for the most part, but I will make time to watch Thrones, Stranger Things (probably shouldn't after S2) and Dark. I would trade GoT for the second season of Dark

Now that's a bold statement........and it worked. I'll watch Dark next. ;)
