View Full Version : Skepsis' Short Films Tournament
Skepsis93
06-04-13, 07:07 PM
I've been watching quite a few shorts lately and figured it might be fun, with the influx of tournaments around here lately, to start up my own with that theme. So, 32 films, start with 2 each and I'll let you know when you can renominate if things slow down. I don't want to drag this out, so I'll probably leave a day or two for voting for each round.
Remember the theme is Short films. I'll accept whatever IMDb classifies as a short film. As donnie has rightly pointed out there are a lot of these available on YouTube and they don't take much effort to watch, so I'm hoping we'll all be able to see a lot of new stuff and vote on a lot of the brackets!

Is that this (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2316871/?ref_=fn_al_tt_6) one, TokeZa? Do you have a link to somewhere we could watch it?
Nope its this one:
http://youtu.be/XUtm0TIYt3I
Memento Mori (2012) by Dan Browne
"A man sets out to draw the world. As the years go by, he peoples a space with images of provinces, kingdoms, mountains, bays, ships, islands, fishes, rooms, instruments, stars, horses, and individuals. A short time before he dies, he discovers that the patient labyrinth of lines traces the lineaments of his own face." - Jorge Luis Borges
"Canadian filmmaker, photographer and multimedia artist Dan Browne's visually stunning memento mori creates a vast sprawling memory well that uses thousands of images that celebrate and construct life itself. What begins as a rush of visual stimulation rapidly becomes something more complex, unique and personal as rhythms and themes emerge and vanish. These elements are dictated as much by the viewer's unconscious interpretation of the medium as the actual images presented and by their affect on the audience." - Art Cinema OFFoff

3. Harvie Krumpet vs. Presto
Well I guess I have seen Presto before, just forgt the title. And while it's a sweet little film I found Harvie Krumpet to be hilarious when I saw it, while this, just nice. Both are good films.
8. The House is Black vs. The Heart of the World
I watched The House is Black awhile back and don't plan on watching it again. It's powerful though, and lets sights speak for themselves. I just watched The Heart of the World, my reaction is a mix of :bored: &
Edit: One more
9. Bambi Meets Godzilla vs. Envelope
Even if Envelope wasn't my nomination, and BmG was amazingly animated, this vote would be easy. It's effort vs no effort. And I mean Atleast change the title, took away any potential laughs due to shock.

10. Wallace & Gromit in The Wrong Trousers vs. 10/65: Selbstverstümmelung
11. Everything Will Be Ok vs. Meshes of the Afternoon
12. Un Chien Andalou vs. Dimensions of Dialogue
I'll watch the other films but I doubt that any of them will amaze me as much as The House Is Black, the one that seem less like a short film than a transcendental prayer; a howl of despair to reconcile belief and suffering. And this is coming from someone who doesn't subscribe to any particular religion.
2. Charlotte et son Jules (not seen) vs. Memento mori
10. Wallace & Gromit in The Wrong Trousers vs. 10/65: Selbstverstümmelung
11. Everything Will Be OK vs. Meshes of the Afternoon (close)
13. La Jetee vs. King-Size Canary
15. The Red Balloon vs. Wallace & Gromit in A Close Shave - Too close to vote yet, but The Red Balloon is one of the first films I remember and probably the first one which made me cry.

10. Wallace & Gromit in The Wrong Trousers vs. 10/65: Selbstverstümmelung
10/65 was a great nomination by TozeKa! Disturbing and eerie film about bodily mutilation. Wrong Trousers was good, but I prefer A Close Shave.
15. The Red Balloon vs. Wallace & Gromit in A Close Shave
I didn't get the hype of The Red Balloon. Just kind of felt self-entitled to me, as if the protagonist is the center of the universe. Call me heartless but I didn't find it touching at all.

I HAVE FOUND A COPY OF CHARLOTTE ET SON JULES - Don't ask how, involved a lot of searching, some strange French sites etc. etc. it's a 80mb AVI file, not sure about how 'legal' this is but what do you recommend I do guys? Do you want a PM of it or something, should I upload it?
Edit: Will anyone object to me sending you the download link (where I found it) via PM? it is a rar file (you can download WinRar for free to extract it, then it's a singular AVI file) but my virus scanner said it was completely fine, and the video works fine.
I will link it in here if you want, it's on the legal file sharing site: http://depositfiles.com not a specifically made illegal film site, what you guys reckon?

And I like your description of Duck Amuck, the trolling animator :D

Charlotte et son Jules isn't great by any means, but it still has the Godard style of the 60s that made him so refreshing. It is a one joke film, and I saw it coming, but it's still a fun little flick.

1. Bambi Meets Godzilla vs. The Red Balloon
Didn't care for either, but The Red Balloon has effort, so it wins.
2. Dimensions of Dialoguevs. Charlotte et son Jules
My favorite short vs a decent one.
3. Meshes of the Afternoon vs. The Heart of the World
Both are really awful but when it comes to The Heart of The World I actually pondered what was going on, Meshes, I didn't care.
4. Wallace and Gromit in the Wrong Trousers vs. Franz Kafka's It's a Wonderful Life
The Wrong Trousers was ok, not as good as The Close Shave though. It's a Wonderful Life was a funny and sweet short. Not to mention my nomination.
5. Duck Amuck vs. Night and Fog
Night and Fog is a sad documentary but I didn't cry or even feel much sorrow, just irritated and mad. Can't say it opened my eyes up to the holocaust, Duck Amuck I laughed the whole 5 minutes, and like the concept.
6. Presto vs. Paperman
Two Disney shorts and I'd give both the same rating. Presto is more imaginative.
7. Frankenweenie vs. Geri's Game
Still have to see Frankenweenie
8. La Jetee vs. Tale of Tales

1. Wallace and Gromit in The Wrong Trousers vs. Frankenweenie
Well I finally watched Frankenweenie for this tournmanet, and this is a pretty tough choice. I'd give both the same ratings, and they're about equally entertaining. I thing the concept behind the second is smarter so that what I'm voting for.
2. Presto vs. Night and Fog
I enjoyed Presto more, but Night and Fog is the better film. It's the best one left imo.

Which means our final will be contested by two films that I don't think could be more disparate:
Nuit et brouillard (Night and Fog)
Alain Resnais, 1955

Wallace and Gromit in The Wrong Trousers
Gonna have to go with my nomination, Night and Fog is a fantastic and devastating piece of work, but Wallace and Gromit is pure fun that I have enjoyed since I was a child.

Wallace and Gromit in "The Wrong Trousers"
Voting happiness over depression
". . . We pretend to take up hope again as the image recedes into the past,
As if we were cured once and for all of the scourge of the camps.
We pretend it all happened only once at a given time and place,
We turn a blind eye to what surrounds us
And a deaf ear to humanity's never-ending cry."

And we're done here! It's beat out some very stiff competition, prevailing by 5 votes to 2. I think we'd all agree that Alain Resnais' stunningly visceral, poetic, devastating look at the holocaust is a very worthy victor indeed.
The winner is...
Nuit et brouillard (Night and Fog)
"Not a documentary, or an indictment, or a poem, but a meditation
on the most important phenomenon of the twentieth century." - Francois Truffaut
