MMW Reviews: Warm Bodies
Is Warm Bodies the zombie version of the Twilight films? Lets find out
Warm Bodies (2013)
Cast: Nicholas Hoult, Teresa Palmer, and John Malkovich,
Director: Jonathan Levine
Synopsis: Nicholas Hoult stars as a Zombie named R (Yes a Zombie lead, go figure) in a post apocalyptic world that has one space quarantined off for humans, and R and other zombies, wander aimlessly throughout an airport. While R is able to have inner monologue but not quite put together coherent words or sentences throughout the film. And then as Julie (Teresa Palmer) and other youth of the human colony go to the city for supplies they run into R and another group of zombies, and instead of killing Julie, R saves Julie taking her back with him and as R goes through a number of events with Julie, you find that R is starting to change out of a Zombie. Thus you have, Warm Bodies.
Review
Jonathan Levine takes a movie set in a zombie apocalypse, and tries to bring romance, comedy, and action into the mix, so seamlessly that only Shawn Of The Dead has reached the ultimate precipice with similar components with more focus on the romance aspect inWarm Bodies.
Warm Bodies released on February 1,2013 had many people saying before it was even released, that Warm Bodies is just Twilight with zombies, deservingly so as the trailer seemed to be very romance driven, boy was everyone wrong. You have R a zombie that has an inner monologue showing his thoughts, but he cant put together words or sentences and has a friend named M (Rob Corddrey) who is also a zombie, and let me tell you he is a huge bright spot in this movie he is very funny. Yes the zombie is the funniest role in the movie who could have guessed that honestly. John Malkovich plays Julies hard ass dad and leader of the human survivors. And yes it is the very cliché honest not caring role, however although John Malkovich is perfect for that sort of role and plays it well, I kind of felt it would be awesome if they employed his crazy sense of humor, maybe they could have had him be a smart aleck to his soldiers or something of the sorts not to the extent of “Red” where f bombs are flying across the screen and its hard to not take him as an “old crazy guy” but maybe have him throw in a few smart aleck remarks, but it is just a small gripe I had with the movie.Oh and the “bonies” who were the extra evil zombies, felt thrown in for a common enemy for the Humans and Zombies not too distracting though. You also have Dave Franco as Julies boyfreind and Analeigh Tipton as Nora (Julies smart ass friend) she in my opinion added another good performance being very funny with her quick witt and smart aleck remarks.
In context to the movies plot, the script sort of felt realistic in some cases as for example, when R and Julie start getting along, there is a montage showing them listening to music and playing games on the plane filled with R’s collected items (quite a funny bit) and Julie puts up a movie named “zombie” next to R’s face and kind of shrugs, and not often do you see people in a zombie apocalypse actually recognize that they are obviously zombies and that was a little bit that I liked. The acting seemed good, everyone played their role well and although it was pretty weird and sick if you think about it in its crux, R’s and Julies romance was well done and seemed like they actually fell for each other. And I would be remised if I did not tell you how good of a job the makeup did on this movie, when R had a good day prior he would seem more vibrant and have some color in him, its no Walking Dead but it was good. And I also have to note they took one of my favorite parts from Shaun of the Dead and put it in their to a lowered extent when R sort of “teaches “ Julie how to act like a zombie and made for a good laugh. The soundtrack was also solid mixing 80’s/90’s Rock and jazz, and newer songs such as M83’s Midnight City. One of my personal favorite parts has to do with them realizing a song is playing instead of having the song that the characters are unaware of, smart funny joke with that and a good goofy scene overall.
Now this is not a movie for the hardcore “zombie purists”, if you come into this movie with an open mind towards zombies then this is for you as this is NOT the zombies of old (mindless emotion impaired). Please don’t try to go with a zombie and love him till he becomes a human that will most certainly not end well. This movie does many things well but is not a “masterpiece of zombie films” that I view Shaun of the Dead to be, if you open your mind you will most likely enjoy this movie but its not a movie people will yell at you for not seeing.
My Rating
3/5 Peoples Strudels
In closing, this movie does many things well, has good makeup, good humor almost throughout (an action sequence at end), but is not for Zombie purists.
