Same rules as other tournament threads. Anything that can be considered Noirish is eligible whether it be traditional film-noir, proto-noir, neo-noir, tech-noir.
Start with two nominations. Go.

It's not my nomination, but it's number two on my all-time best list, and I will say right now: it's going to be tough to beat Polanski's Chinatown, which is pretty much a perfect movie.

Judging by reputation, my nominations are going to have a tough round. Blue Velvet has a chance over The Third Man, but it seems slim. I don't think The Killing has much of a chance against Double Indemnity. eXistenZ has no chance against Sunset Blvd. The only film of mine that seems like it has a chance is Breathless, but it will depend on who has seen both D.O.A. and my film.

I liked Sin City, but it's not something I was over the moon for. Not a favorite of mine, but I felt the avatar represented me fairly well as far as my approach to Movie Forums at the time I chose the avatar back in '05.
Blade Runner, which is playing yet again on my mini player on my PC right now, is the best film of all time.

2. In a Lonely Place (1950) vs Taxi Driver (1976)
3. Blue Velvet (1986) vs The Third Man (1949) The Third Man is the superior film, but I like Blue Velvet more.

WTF is this bullsh!t? L.A. Confidential wiping its ass with another bonafide masterpiece? Sweet Smell of Success deserves more credit. Also, Mulholland Drive is a brilliant film, but Out of the Past can trade blows with it, and probably come out on top in my book.
Sin City is a POS and can't beat any film on here.

I hate that D.O.A. is paired with Taxi Driver. Taxi Driver will most likely win, but D.O.A is a fantastic movie and I would love for it to win the entire tournament.

I agree that The Night of the Hunter isn't a noir, not sure why some people include it as one apart from its fantastic cinematography. I don't think Blue Velvet is really one either, although I think it at least has some important elements and I generally prefer it anyway. I'm hoping for a Chinatown or Touch of Evil win :p

Yeah I don't really see how The Night of the Hunter is a noir either. Blue Velvet certainly has noir elements but I think, like most of Lynch's films, it resists categorization under one genre.

The more I think about it, the more I think Blue Velvet is a neo-noir actually. Visually it has a dark, eerie, mysterious feel, it deals with the dark depressing side of humans (Hopper and the dark underworld), MacLachlan takes on the private detective role who finds himself in the centre of a mystery that gets thicker the deeper he goes, Rossellini is kind of like the femme fatale, who has secrets and it more than what she originally seems, although she is not really devious, she just wants to protect herself/family, and then you've got the dark and dangerous relationships between the characters, sexual chemistry right from the off with MacLachlan and Rosselini, and the strange sexual relationship between her and Hopper too.
