What's up, people?

My username is jal90, which is basically formed by my initials + birth year. I am currently 22 and my birthday comes in three months.

I come from Spain (Europe). Which means that you will need to tolerate some very blatant expression and spelling flaws, because it's not my mother language and that will be specially noticeable in my use of phrasal verbs and synonyms. I hope it's not a big deal though, because I have an experience in other English language forums.

On the other hand, being Spanish means having a set of differences in terms of the cinema I am more exposed to. As much as I respected late Roger Ebert, his influence on film taste in Spain is relatively low, which means that many of his choices are way more well-known in the US than here (I'll take easy examples with Do the right thing, Kind hearts and coronets or Stand by me). I've also noticed certain patterns, for example the acknowledgement of Guy Maddin's work (who is almost unknown here), or the praise for Aguirre, the wrath of God (it's praised here too, but to a much lower level, I myself don't like it)... On the other hand, there are some Spanish directors who'll probably be quite unheard of (Berlanga, for example, who is my favorite).

These little cultural differences aside, it happens that my tastes are a strange mix of canon and oddities. Maybe due to my heavy exposition to classics in a very short amount of time, there's a quite varying range in my opinion of critically acclaimed films; I tend to agree though.

I tend to like everything or at least try to find its merit. I wouldn't be able to name a favorite genre, but what I can say is that I am very heavily into animation. Ghibli and Pixar are always there in my top lists, and I've watched a lot of stuff, movies, series (anime mostly, but I've always been a hardcore fan of The Simpsons and Futurama), short films... On the contrary, my live action experience is quite poor, but I'm trying to balance it.

So what am I doing here? Well, I don't have a solid reason. I found out about this site yesterday, during a random search. It looked interesting and here I am. Of course, I joined to talk about movies, but if there's any other thread that looks interesting, I'll be there.

That's all I think. I am still exploring the forums and the user features, but it seems like a very nice and friendly place :)

Thanks, gandalf26 and The Gunslinger45, for your very kind welcome :). About my lacks in English expression, I guess they will be more noticeable when I talk about specific issues... like reviewing movies and such. But anyway, thanks for your words.

I just want to ask something about the structure... is there something about the top100 lists that some users bring? is it a forum tradition or something like that? If so, I'll probably join it soon, sounds like a lot of fun.

Welcome to Movie Forums, jal. :)

Yeah, posting a Top 100 is a bit of a tradition. Lots of people don't, of course (I haven't, yet, but I still plan to), but it's a great way to discuss your favorite films and let people get to know you. But it's also a bit of an undertaking!

If you do decide to go for it, I'd recommend obviously counting down to your favorites, and posting no more than a handful a day, so people can stop and react to each group. :) And the best lists, of course, always contain the occasional comment about why you chose the ones you did.

Again, thanks for your warm welcome, Yoda and honeykid. And thanks for explaining the issue of the top100, it was more or less what I thought, but didn't know if there was a previous step to make or something.

I am preparing a top 50. Anything more then that and I feel I am throwing movies onto the list at random.
